Texas has over a handful of highly rated 2024 NFL draft prospects, but defensive tackle Byron Murphy has recently separated himself from the pack.
Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, T’Vondre Sweat and Ja’Tavion Sanders will all likely be taken off of the board within the first three rounds. Jaylan Ford, Christian Jones and Jordan Whittington could be Day 3 picks. Needless to say, Texas will be well represented throughout the draft.
However, Murphy now appears to be Texas’ sure bet for a first-round pick in April.
In recent NFL mock drafts, Murphy has climbed the board to as high as No. 5 overall. NFL’s lead draft writer Eric Edholm now projects Murphy to be taken off the board No. 12 overall to the Denver Broncos.
I know many will pine for a quarterback, but I think the Broncos will be hard-pressed to land a worthy talent at the position in this lofty draft slot. Instead, they could pivot to upgrading the interior D-line with an explosive penetrator such as Murphy, even if this feels a tad high for him.
Murphy is widely considered the No. 1 defensive tackle in this draft class.
