Texas climbs into top five of CBS Sports’ College Football Power Rankings

Texas climbed into the top five of CBS Sports’ College Football Power Rankings this week.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger accounted for six total touchdowns to complete a thriller comeback over Texas Tech on Sept. 26.

Unfortunately for the Big 12 as a whole, the outcomes weren’t favorable in terms of the reputation for the conference moving forward. The highest-ranked team, Oklahoma, was upset at home by Kansas State.

The Longhorns were well on their way to joining the Sooners with a shocking loss, but Texas miraculously managed to score 15 points within the final three minutes of the game. This included a successful onside kick and two-point conversion.

It wasn’t an attractive win by any means, but at the end of the day a win is what matters most. Ehlinger put the team on his back and played his best ball when the stakes were highest. According to CBS Sports analyst Dennis Dodd, it was enough to have Texas rise into the top five of their College Football Power Rankings.

Teams from the Power Five conferences that are not yet playing in the 2020 college football season are not included in CBS Sports’ Power Rankings until Monday, Oct. 19.

Listed at No. 3 overall behind Clemson and Alabama, Texas moved up two spots from last week.

“With 3:13 left at Texas Tech, the Longhorns were down by 15. Well, of course Sam Ehlinger told coach Tom Herman, “They left us too much time. We’re going to tie it up and win in overtime.” Ehlinger gets a Heisman for the seeing the future. The Horns won 63-56 in OT. Herman is 2-0 for the first time at Texas. Oklahoma looms in two weeks.”

Oklahoma dropped nine spots to No. 11 overall, while Oklahoma State and Kansas State were the only other Big 12 programs listed within the top 25. Texas must scrape by with a win against TCU on Oct. 3 before meeting the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 10.
