Clemson continues to show interest in a versatile in-state athlete who was on campus this spring and is planning to compete at the Dabo Swinney Camp this summer.

Sumter (S.C.) High School’s Zyeir Gamble – a 5-foot-10, 175-pound junior in the 2023 class – has remained in contact with members of the Tigers’ staff since his visit to Clemson for the program’s second junior day of the year on March 5.

Gamble has been communicating with senior defensive assistant DeAndre McDaniel, as well as safeties coach/co-defensive coordinator Mickey Conn, and Clemson assistant coach Thomas Austin stopped by Gamble’s school last week.

“Coach Austin was just at the school (on Thursday, April 28), talking, looking around and watching us work out a little bit,” Gamble told The Clemson Insider. “Coach McDaniel, me and him text a lot. And Coach Conn, we talked a little while about a couple weeks ago.”

What has Gamble been hearing from the coaches overall?

“They were just like they want me to come to camp,” he said.

“Just stay humble and keep working,” Gamble added of their message to him. “And then Coach McDaniel, he was just texting me about checking up on me and all, asking how the fam was, just having a family conversation.”

The fact that the Tigers have stayed in touch with Gamble and kept showing interest in him since he was on campus “means a lot,” he said.

“I’ve just got to keep working, and showing that they’re still interested in me, they could be interested in a lot of other juniors around the world, and they’re still interested in me… I’ve just got to keep working,” he added.

When Gamble looks back on his junior day visit to Clemson in March, he said it’s the “family atmosphere” that sticks out to him more than anything from his time in Tiger Town.

“When you walk on their campus, it’s just different,” he said. “Everybody’s like family around there.”

Gamble is eager to showcase his skills and ability for Clemson’s staff when he returns to campus to work out at the Swinney Camp in June.

“I hope they know I’m a ballplayer,” he said. “But I just want to show them that I’m a real ballplayer in front of their eyes.”

Gamble is being looked at by Clemson as a safety but sees action in all three phases of the game for Sumter, lining up at running back and wide receiver on offense, safety, cornerback and nickel on defense, and kick returner and punt returner on special teams.

Last season, he totaled 1,065 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns on offense/special teams to go with 40 total tackles, nine interceptions, six pass breakups and two defensive scores.

“It doesn’t matter what position, I’m a ballplayer,” he said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in that, and I can play on either side of the ball, offense or defense. So, I can bring a team anything – both sides of the ball, even special teams.”

Charlotte, Furman and Elon have offered Gamble, who has his fingers crossed in hopes of getting a future offer from Clemson.

“That would be big,” he said. “That would be very, very big. A school like that, a national championship school… That’s like the dream school every football player wants to go to. They’re a national championship school, and you know they put that hard work in. Especially the education side of it, they’ve got a lot of things to offer you with education, too. So, that’d be very big.”

Versatile in-state athlete details ‘amazing’ Clemson visit

A versatile in-state prospect drawing interest from Clemson made his first visit to campus last weekend and did not leave disappointed at all after his experience in Tiger Town.

Sumter (S.C.) High School 2023 athlete Zyeir Gamble attended the Tigers’ second junior day of the year – their “spring elite day” – last Saturday and came away from the visit very impressed, especially by the family vibe he felt from the coaching staff.

“Clemson was amazing, like the staff, all that,” he told The Clemson Insider. “I loved how they were big on family. Every coach that got up there and introduced themselves, they talked about their family. I’m a big family guy.”

One of Dabo Swinney’s mantras for the vision of his program – “to serve a player’s heart, not his talent” – also made a big impression on Gamble.

“They don’t just love your talent, they love your heart and they’re reaching out to your heart. That really got to me,” he said. “Dabo, he cares about the football thing, but first he wants to get you out there and you know you’re going to graduate once you go to Clemson.”

“I just loved how he’s going to get his players to graduate, he sees a life after football, and he just really cares about his players,” Gamble added.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound junior enjoyed taking in the Tigers’ spring practice Saturday as well and saw similarities between it and his team’s practices at Sumter.

“Their practice kind of reminds me of ours a little bit,” he said. “Like everything, they’re moving fast, getting from station to station and field to field. I loved the practice.”

Clemson is looking at Gamble as a safety, and safeties coach/co-defensive coordinator Mickey Conn – Gamble’s primary recruiter – extended his invitation to the junior day.

“He’s a great man,” Gamble said. “I loved how he was coaching yesterday. He was the energized person up there in coaching the safeties, and how he wants you to come there and work, I love that.”

Gamble and Conn had been in contact prior to Saturday’s visit, but it marked their first time getting to meet each other in person.

What was Conn’s overall message to Gamble when they spoke while he was on campus?

“He was just telling me to keep working, we’re building a relationship and Clemson’s all about relationships, and we’re going to get our bond tighter,” Gamble said.

For Sumter, Gambles sees action in all three phases of the game, lining up at running back and wide receiver on offense, safety, cornerback and nickel on defense, and kick returner and punt returner on special teams. Last season, he totaled 1,065 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns on offense/special teams to go with 40 total tackles, nine interceptions, six pass breakups and two defensive scores.

Gamble holds an offer from Charlotte. Along with Clemson, schools such as South Carolina, East Carolina and Elon are showing interest in Gamble, who is primarily being recruited as a defensive back.

“I’m versatile,” Gamble said, describing himself as a DB. “I love to come downhill and hit you, and once they put the ball in the air, I’m going to get the ball, too.”

Gamble, of course, would love to get an offer from Clemson and have the chance to suit up for the Tigers.

“It would mean a lot,” he said. “Clemson plays on a big stage. They play the best of the best, and for me to get there and play the best of the best, man, I would love it.”

Gamble also went to Charlotte for its junior day in January and is looking to visit South Carolina and Elon later this month. Last season, he made game-day visits to Charlotte, East Carolina, Virginia Tech and NC State.

Clemson is set to host a slew of top prospects today for its second junior day of the year, which the Tigers are dubbing their “spring elite day” for recruits in the class of 2023.

Among the headliners expected to be in attendance is Central (Phenix City, Ala.) five-star A.J. Harris, the nation’s No. 2 cornerback and No. 17 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder has made multiple trips to Tiger Town and is a priority target for the Tigers. Last September, he released a top seven comprised of Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio State.

Harris will be joined on campus by a host of other talented defensive backs, including Harris’ teammate at Central, cornerback Quintavious Billingsley; Lake Mary (Fla.) four-star cornerback Braedan Marshall; Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) three-star cornerback Colton Hood; Daniel (Central, S.C.) cornerback Misun Kelley; North Oconee (Bogart, Ga.) cornerback Khalil Barnes; Loachapoka (Auburn, Ala.) cornerback Jacorious Hart; Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) three-star safety Robert Billings; and A.C. Reynolds (Asheville, N.C.) safety Dashawn Stone.

Another headliner slated to be on hand for the spring elite day is Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) four-star offensive lineman Monroe Freeling.

It will mark his first visit to Clemson since attending the Florida State game in late October of last year. He was also on campus last June to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, after which he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

Freeling said during a recent interview with The Clemson Insider that the Tigers “stand highly” in his recruitment heading into today’s visit.

“I really loved the culture there when I first went up and I’ve been maintaining a good relationship with (offensive line) coach (Thomas) Austin,” he said, “and I’m just looking forward to growing it some more when I get out there.”

Along with Clemson, which is heavily pursuing Freeling, he named Miami and Notre Dame as a couple of schools that have been recruiting him the hardest.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Freeling is the No. 1 prospect in South Carolina, No. 9 offensive tackle nationally and No. 82 overall prospect for the 2023 class.

South Point (Belmont, N.C.) four-star offensive lineman Sullivan Absher will also return to Clemson after picking up an offer from the Tigers in February – an offer that he told TCI he “had been working for, for a very long time.”  He previously traveled to Clemson twice during this past season – first for the Boston College game in October and then for the Wake Forest game in November.

Another big-time offensive lineman will be on campus today as well in Eagles Landing Christian Academy (McDonough, Ga.) four-star tackle Zechariah Owens.

As for the defensive linemen expected to be among the junior day visitors, there are several prominent prospects, namely St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star David Ojiegbe, Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.) four-star Hunter Osborne, Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green, Upson-Lee (Thomaston, Ga.) four-star T.J. Searcy and Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star A.J. Hoffler.

A bunch of other standout class of 2023 prospects are on the expected guest list for the spring elite day, as well, including Hickory Ridge (Harrisburg, N.C.) four-star wide receiver Christian Hamilton; Bridgeland (Cypress, Texas) four-star tight end Reid Mikeska; Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star linebacker Dee Crayton; Fairfax (Va.) four-star linebacker Tony Rojas; F.W. Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) three-star wide receiver Creed Whittemore; Maiden (N.C.) High School three-star wide receiver Chris Culliver; Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) three-star athlete Jordan Bass; Sumter (S.C.) athlete Zyeir Gamble; and Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) running back Jarvis Green.

A few notable 2024 prospects are planning to visit Clemson today, too, in Carrollwood Day (Tampa, Fla.) four-star defensive back Tavoy Feagin, Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) tight end Brooks Mauk and Towers (Decatur, Ga.) wide receiver/cornerback Keshawn Weathers.

In-state athlete will be at Clemson this weekend

The Clemson Insider caught up with an in-state athlete, prior to his visit to Clemson this weekend.

Zyeir Gamble — a 5-foot-10, 175-pound athlete out of Sumter High School — shared what he’s been hearing from the Tigers ahead of this weekend’s visit and what he’s looking forward to seeing while he’s on campus.

“I’m excited about it, man,” Gamble said of his upcoming visit to Clemson this weekend. “Growing up, you hear a lot about Clemson, with them winning National Championships and stuff like that. I already know it’s gonna be fun.”

According to Gamble, Mickey Conn wanted him to come camp at Clemson this past summer. Gamble was supposed to participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, but he ended up injuring his groin. Since then, the Tigers hadn’t really been talking to him, but they were sending him graphics and mail.

Following Gamble’s junior season, a Clemson coach came by Sumter High School, presumably to see four-star defensive end Monteque Rhames.

Gamble was able to introduce himself to Nick Eason and not long after that, Conn reached out to him about his film. Conn gave him a call about two weeks ago and invited him to Clemson’s Elite Visit Day on March 5.

“It felt good,” Gamble said. “I did a lot of work in the offseason after my injury, so it’s good to see it paying off a little bit, but I still got a lot of work to do, though.”

Clemson is looking at Gamble as safety. On his visit, he’s not only looking to see how Conn coaches his position group, but he also wants to see the National Championship trophies that the Tigers have won.

Gamble currently only holds one scholarship offer, which is from UNC Charlotte. In addition to Clemson, he’s been receiving interest from Louisville, App State, Elon, South Carolina and Furman.

He believes that it’s a testament to the hard work he’s put in but estimates that next season will be an even better show. This past season, Gamble recorded 1,065 all-purpose yards with 16 total touchdowns. On defense, he had 29 solo tackles, nine interceptions and six pass breakups.

As far as Gamble and his game are concerned, he described himself as being “a versatile ballhawk,” because not only can he hit you, but he can also come down and guard the opposing team’s No. 1 wideout.
