Penn State vs. Ohio State injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 10

All the latest updates and news on Penn State’s injury report ahead of a Week 10 game vs. Ohio State.

Penn State hosts Ohio State in one of the games of the year in the Big Ten. But the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes each are coming into the week with some notable injury concerns after last week. Penn State lost key players in the first half of last week’s win at Wisconsin when quarterback [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] and defensive end [autotag]Dani Dennis-Sutton[/autotag] each left in the second half of the game. Ohio State is battling some offensive line concerns after getting a little banged up last week in a win against Nebraska.

Penn State and Ohio State kick off today’s game at noon Eastern on Fox. Penn State is a slight underdog at home and does not have history on its side in this series. If Penn State is going to pick up a win, then it will need to be as close to full strength as possible.

Here is a look at the player availability reports for both teams for today’s big game in Happy Valley. (Player availability reports are released two hours prior to kickoff, so this post will be updated accordingly once that information is available).

Drew Allar injury update

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar left last week’s game at Wisconsin at the end of the first half with an apparent knee injury. After warming up for the second half, Allar did not play after halftime, giving way to backup quarterback Beau Pribula. Allar was seen practicing with the team this week and is expected to play and start for the Nittany Lions on Saturday.

Dani Dennis-Sutton injury update

Penn State defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton left last week’s game early in the second half with a reported groin injury. Dennis-Sutotn was taken out of the game late in the first half and did try playing at the start of the second half, but he was removed quickly in the second half as a caution. Head coach James Franklin said this week he would be a game-time decision.

Penn State player availability report for Kent State updated

Penn State has posted its player availability report for today’s game against Kent State.

Penn State will be without one of its top defensive players on the roster this weekend when the Nittany Lions host Kent State for a mid-Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup. Head coach James Franklin announced this week that the team will be without safety, Kevin Winston Jr., for an extended period of time due to a long-term injury. This week’s player availability confirmed that for this week with Winston Jr. being among the players officially ruled out on the Penn State player availability report.

Big Ten teams are required to provide a player availability report prior to their respective games each week as part of a new conference policy put into place for the 2023 season.

The following players were listed as out for Penn State for the Kent State game.

  • [autotag]Kevin Winston Jr.[/autotag]

Penn State player availability report for Week 1 at West Virginia

Penn State’s updated player availability reports confirms a couple of players expected to be out of action.

Penn State’s first road trip to open the season will see the roster without a number of players available. Penn State’s player availability report was released two hours before kicking off at West Virginia, and a total of 14 players have officially been ruled out of action.

Some of the names appearing on the list were not surprising to see. Linebacker Keon Wylie has previously been reported to be out of action for a significant period of time since the spring. Backup quarterback Jaxon Smolik was also banged up with an undisclosed injury during camp.

One of the notable players to miss the West Virginia game includes tight end Khalil Dinkins, who is expected to be a key alternative to star Tyler Warren at the position. James Franklin did note this week that Dinkins had been getting banged up leading up to the game, however.

The following players have been ruled out for Penn State in Week 1:

  • [autotag]Jaxon Smolik[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Khalil Dinkins[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Kari Jackson[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Keon Wylie[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Mason Robinson[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Xavier Gilliam[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Peter Gonzalez[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Jerry Cross[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Sam Siafa[/autotag]
  • [autotag]Liam Andrews[/autotag]
  • [autotag]De’Andre Cook[/autotag]
  • [autotag]T.A. Cunningham[/autotag]

Big Ten schools are required to provide a player availability report no later than two hours prior to a scheduled kickoff. The policy was put into effect in 2023 and has seen a few conferences follow that idea in 2024.

West Virginia has not had any reported injuries this week. The Big 12 does not have the same kind of rules requiring player availability reports for its members. The SEC and MAC each enacted a similar policy beginning this season following the Big Ten’s lead.

Penn State’s veteran defensive lineman out indefinitely with injury

Penn State defensive lineman Zuriah Fisher reportedly out indefinitely due to spring injury.

As Penn State gets through the summer months heading into preseason before things get truly underway in the fall, there are some questions about how these offensive and defensive units will look.

On the offensive line, they will have to replace three NFL draftees.

Defensively, two of their edge rushers were drafted, prompting [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] to move down from his linebacker spot. As roles shift, there are opportunities for others who have been waiting their turn to step up and carve out a job for themselves.

It seemed like [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag] was poised to be that player on the defensive line.

Entering this season as a fourth-year player, the veteran was coming off a 17 tackle, 3.5 sack performance in 2023 across 13 games where he also had a fumble recovery. He seemed like someone who could emerge as a real contributor for this unit.

Unfortunately, it was reported by Nate Bauer of On3 that Fisher is going to be out for an indefinite time with a “significant injury setback” that was suffered during spring practice sessions in April.

That’s all the information that was released, but it seems like he could miss extensive time this season that might even include the entire year.

This would be the second injury that has caused him to miss a significant portion of the season. In 2022, he was limited to only the final two games of the year.

Fisher was reportedly a player who was standing out during the offseason as [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] talked about the lineman’s continued ability to improve in his new position after beginning his career as a linebacker. Penn State’s strength coordinator Chuck Losey said he was impressed with how the veteran embraced the competition and was “really happy with the way he’s responded.”

Where the Nittany Lions go from here will be seen, but this is a major loss for a team who is looking to get into their first-ever College Football Playoff.

2023 Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 36 Zuriah Fisher

Zuriah Fisher’s 2022 season was lost almost entirely due to a knee injury. How do things look for 2023?

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Next up is a look at a player many are hoping takes another step forward in becoming a dominant force on the defensive line, redshirt junior [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag]. Fisher missed nearly the entire 2022 season due to a knee injury suffered in the spring, so hopes are high for a healthy Fisher being able to contribute more on defense in 2023. Here is a snapshot look at Fisher going into the 2023 season.

Snapshot profile: Where Zuriah Fisher looks to improve in 2022 for Penn State’s defensive line

Going into the 2022 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] this season.

The next player is Penn State defensive end [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag]. The Nittany Lions will have an intriguing room full of defensive ends and some quite big shoes to fill.

Their biggest losses there are [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag] and [autotag]Jesse Luketa[/autotag]. Now, Penn State will look to fill those shoes next season, with Fisher hopefully being one of them.

Blue-White Game Report Card: Grading Penn State’s spring football game

The grades are in for Penn State’s performance in the Blue-White Game.

Penn State’s spring game wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard, even in a modified scoring system. And fans wanting to see drastic improvement from the program that has gone .500 over the past two seasons may be left wondering if Penn State is set up for another mediocre season in Happy Valley after watching the Blue-White Game. But Penn State’s final spring practice of the year had some positive developments and some reminders that help is on the way over the summer.

And now the grades are in for Penn State’s performance during the Blue-White Game. Here’s how each position group was graded for the spring game in Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

Quarterback: C

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

A recurring theme when it comes to the offensive grades following Penn State’s game is probably chalked up to a simple “Eh, it could have been better.” That was the basic takeaway from the performance of the quarterbacks overall, but any expectation of any passer just lighting up the spring game may have been unreasonable.

We were never likely to see a whole lot out of [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag], the sixth-year senior who really has little more to prove at this point. We know pretty much exactly what Clifford is, and if given time to process the field, he can make plays. But he had some overthrown passes at times. He did, however, throw the game’s only touchdown of the game.

The backup competition behind Clifford is the real storyline here, and the future of [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] is what fans are eager to witness. But a rough spring debut for the true freshman shows there is still work to be done in the big picture. If based solely on one afternoon, [autotag]Christian Veilleux[/autotag] proved he should be the team’s primary backup option heading into the season, although Allar should improve quickly.

Zuriah Fisher set to miss 2022 with knee injury

Reports have confirmed a knee injury to a promising Penn State defensive lineman is a season-ending injury.

Penn State has been churning out defensive end prospects for the NFL like Willy Wonka does with candy bars. After sending another two to the NFL this year in [autotag]Jesse Luketa[/autotag] and [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag] it was expected that [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag] would earn meaningful reps this fall, but fate had other plans.

It was first reported by Lions 247 that Fisher injured his knee during spring practices. It was followed up with a report from Blue White Illustrated stating it is feared to be a serious knee injury.  While the exact injury has yet to be revealed it is feared that he will miss most if not all of the year. Audrey Snyder of The Athletic later confirmed the injury is a season-ending injury.

Knee injuries are very hit and miss in terms of how long recovery can take. We have seen even the worst type like ACL tears have much quicker turnarounds than was ever thought before.

Fisher was entering his third year on campus after committing to Penn State back in 2020, and he was expected to compete for a meaningful, maybe even a starting role. He was an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2021 and earned significant playing time against a talented Arkansas squad in the Outback Bowl. He would have two tackles and be a part of a defense that was attempting to keep the Razorback offense in check.

This injury will result in more players stepping up, some young ones at that, but this further amplifies how big it was for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff to grab Demeioun Robinson from Maryland out of the transfer portal. Robinson was already expected to have a big role on the defensive line, amplifying that even more so now.

This also will have a big impact on next week’s Blue-White Game. [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] will be sure to have a big rotation of guys on the defensive front, so look for someone to separate themselves then.

Everything James Franklin said in his spring press conference

Here is everything James Franklin had to say in his spring football press conference.

As Penn State hit the football practice fields for the first spring practice of the year, head coach James Franklin spent some time in front of a microphone to answer questions from reporters about the current state of the program for the 2022 season. After two mediocre seasons, a number of departures to the NFL, and some notable changes on the staff and roster, there was no shortage of topics to discuss with the head coach of the Nittany Lions on Monday afternoon.

Franklin covered a lot of ground, including key position battles and concerns, the future of the program under a new athletics director, and how the confidence level is for a program that has struggled the past two years. Franklin also discussed the impact some of the newest additions to the program are having in workouts, whether as an early enrollee or via the transfer portal.

The following quotes from Franklin were provided by Penn State.
