5 Raiders players to watch vs. Chargers

There are a few Raiders players that the Chargers will need to keep an eye on if they want to start 1-0.

The Chargers and Raiders will start their respective seasons with a divisional tilt in Los Angeles.

There are a few Raiders players that the Chargers will need to keep an eye on if they want to start 1-0.

Gardner Minshew

Minshew was recently named the Raiders’ Week 1 starter over Aiden O’Connell. The sixth-year veteran has 37 career starts under his belt, and his level of play will be the main difference-maker in this opener. He has the weapons to succeed, and this contest against the Chargers defense will be his first test of the season.

Brock Bowers

Bowers was the consensus top tight end in this year’s draft, and rightfully so. In three collegiate seasons, the No. 13 overall pick had 2,538 receiving yards and 31 total touchdowns.  He’s been nursing a foot injury, which has forced him to be limited in practice throughout the week. Assuming he’s active in Week 1, the Chargers must account for him at all times, particularly in the red zone.

Zamir White

With Josh Jacobs gone, the Raiders’ No. 1 running back job now belongs to White. In his start against the Chargers last season, he tallied 69 rushing yards and a touchdown. Los Angeles’ defense allowed the second-most receiving yards to tailbacks in 2023, which will be something to watch in this Week 1 matchup.

Christian Wilkins

The former Dolphins star landed in Las Vegas back in March. His presence in the middle should only make things easier for edge rusher Maxx Crosby, which should cause concerns for the Chargers in Week 1. In 2022, Wilkins wreaked havoc against the Bolts with six tackles and a sack.

Jack Jones

Jones is the Raiders’ top cornerback and had an interception in the late-season blowout in 2023. Without a true No. 1 wideout for Los Angeles, Jones could be in for a big day.

Raiders OC talks about workload he expects from RB Zamir White

Luke Getsy says he wants new starting RB Zamir White to ‘take the lead’ but what does that mean for his overall workload?

The way Zamir White finished last season was impressive. But there’s a big difference between coming in with fresh legs late in the season than being the starter to begin the season and keeping that same energy throughout.

White averaged 21 carries per game over his four starts to end last season and had 25 carries in the season finale.

Those are 2022 Josh Jacobs NFL rushing title kind of numbers. And that season Jacobs was the ultimate workhorse back, carrying the rock 340 times. The only back that season who had more was perennial workhorse Derrick Henry (349). And no one else in the league even came close to those numbers.

The question is whether we can expect that kind of workload to continue for White this season. From the sounds of it, probably not.

“I think you’re looking for someone to just take the lead,” Raiders OC Luke Getsy said of White. “You get those critical moments in games and situational football that they’re able to respond. And I don’t think that always necessarily means it has to just be one guy. I think that can be two, can be three. But I think it’s always important to have someone in that room that, you know, is the lead of the room. Not necessarily like the years of the bell cow, 25 carries, 30 carries a game. It’s 17 games. I don’t think anybody’s surviving that anymore. But to be the lead guy when it’s crunch time and you know where you’re going with the football, that guy’s gonna get it done and that’s more important than anything else.”

It’s important to remember that when White came in late last season, he was replacing Jacobs and his role in the Raiders’ offense. That role of as a workhorse back. Just as Jacobs had been for his entire career. It’s the reason White had just 30 career carries prior to coming in for the injured Jacobs.

White is in a different offense now. One that portends to take more of a committee approach to the backfield. If that holds true, Alexander Mattison should get a fair share of the carries as well.

But make no mistake, White is the lead back for this offense.

“Zamir’s a special guy,” Getsy added. “The work ethic, the focus, determination. You put the pads on and you see the pad level go down and how that doesn’t affect his game and he’s able to play at a full speed. I think all that stuff’s been fun. We put a lot of eyes on him when the pads got on and he just got better every single day, so I’m excited to see him truly go at it on a regular season Sunday.”

The first regular season Sunday is just a few days away.

Which Raiders are draftable in fantasy football and their Average Draft Position

Which Raiders are draftable in fantasy football and their Average Draft Position

If you haven’t drafted your fantasy team yet, you better get on it. Or even if you have drafted already and hope to put together another team. You have two more days to get that done.

And if you’re wondering if you should have any Raiders on your team, here are a few who are deemed draftable as well as where they are being selected on their Average Draft Position (ADP) as detailed on FantasyPros.com.

1. WR Davante Adams — 22

2. RB Zamir White — 71

3. TE Brock Bowers — 90

4. WR Jakobi Meyers — 137

5. RB Alexander Mattison — 207

6. QB Gardner Minshew — 223

7. K Daniel Carlson — 232

8. DST Las Vegas Raiders — 239

Getting the Raiders defense in the 200s of the draft would be a steal. They finished last season as the best defense in football and there’s no reason to think they won’t continue that this season. Though if the offense can’t carry their part of it, they could get a bit worn down.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Las Vegas Raiders RB Zamir White

Analyzing Las Vegas Raiders RB Zamir White’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Raiders selected RB Zamir White in the 4th round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia. His usage spiked from 17 carries his rookie season to 104 carries in his sophomore season. Now, with the departure of RB Josh Jacobs this offseason, White will be thrust into the leading role. Below, we look at Zamir White’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, White finished the 2023 NFL season strong, ranking as the RB9 in full-PPR formats from Weeks 15-18. During that stretch, he logged 84 carries for 397 yards and a touchdown, showcasing his potential as a fantasy RB2. While his limited involvement in the passing game may cap his upside, White’s role as the lead rusher in a run-focused offense provides a solid fantasy floor, especially in non-PPR leagues.

White’s 63.13 ADP puts him in the range of the 6th to 8th round depending on the size of the league. The Las Vegas player with the best ADP is WR Davante Adams (22.50).

Among running backs, White’s ADP puts him 22nd at the position, behind Chicago’s D’Andre Swift (62.22) and New England’s Rhamondre Stevenson (57.02 and ahead of Minnesota’s Aaron Jones (63.16) and Miami’s Raheem Mostert (64.74).

Where should you draft White?

White enters the upcoming fantasy football season with intriguing potential after a strong finish in 2023. As the Raiders’ lead back over the final 4 games, White posted impressive numbers, ranking as the RB9 overall in full-PPR formats. His 84 carries during that span tied for the most in the league, and his 4.7 yards per carry (YPC) suggests he could carry a solid fantasy floor into the upcoming season.

However, White’s limited involvement in the passing game, with just 9 receptions for 60 yards in the final stretch, does cap his upside in full-PPR formats. Despite this, new coach Antonio Pierce’s preference for a ground-heavy offense should work in White’s favor. The presence of star WRs Adams and Jakobi Meyers (108.71 ADP) will likely prevent defenses from stacking the box, further boosting White’s chances for success.

While rookie Dylan Laube (134.43 ADP) could cut into White’s workload on passing downs, White’s projected role in short-yardage and goal-line situations strengthens his fantasy value. Currently being drafted as the RB22, White offers solid value as a low-end RB2 or strong flex option, especially for fantasy managers who prioritize receivers or early picks at QB or TE. Given his volume-driven production, White is a worthwhile pick in the 7th round.

Grading four Georgia running backs in the NFL: Preseason Week One

Four UGA running backs took a lot snaps in the preseason. We grade their respective performances

There were four former Georgia Bulldogs that had significant carries this past week of preseason football: Daijun Edwards, Kendall Milton, Kenny McIntosh, and Zamir White. Today, I’ll give a grade on their performance from what I saw.

Daijun Edwards, Pittsburgh Steelers

Opponent & Result: Houston Texans, L 12-20

Statline: 3 carries, 28 yards, 1 rushing touchdown, 1 reception, 9 yards, 1 kick return, 27 yards

Edwards was used in several instances today: as a kick returner for the Steelers (which has become less physically taxing under the new kickoff rules), and as the lead running back during the 4th quarter. His biggest run was a 24-yard gain that almost saw him punch it into the end zone early in the 4th, and he would on the next play.

The Steelers offensive line was effective at blocking for him, but he showed some legitimate agility, especially on his reception, where he juked a defender and almost moved the chains on a check down from Kyle Allen. Time will tell if he makes the 53-man roster, but the undrafted pickup for the Steelers definitely improved his case.

Grade: A

Kendall Milton, Philadelphia Eagles

Opponent & Result: Baltimore Ravens, W 16-13

Statline: 9 carries, 39 yards, 1 target

Milton looked less impressive than Edwards, although he had more yards and carries. He did use his trademark downhill running style from UGA to run out several minutes of the clock and help the Eagles get into range to kick the game-winning field goal. He had a target, but QB Tanner McKee threw it too far right.

He showed patience until he could find a hole from the offensive line, especially on some eight and nine yard gains when he was running up the middle. The Eagles running back room is crowded, with five running backs got 20+ yards on the day (not including Saquon Barkley) but with more showings like this, he can also make the 53-man roster as a depth back behind Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell for the Eagles.

Grade: B

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Kenny McIntosh, Seattle Seahawks

Opponent & Result: Los Angeles Chargers, W 16-3

Statline: 8 carries, 40 yards, 2 receptions, 1 yard

McIntosh, who’s more experienced than Edwards and Milton, had a stellar game in the preseason. He came in during the 2nd drive of the game for Seattle and immediately had two impressive runs for five and 14 yards. He would have had another four-yard run if not for a holding penalty. Then, on a broken screen play, he juked through one defender, but couldn’t shake his jersey off the Charger’s defender’s hands, losing three yards.

On the next drive, he went back to work, converting two first downs in two drives with a four yard run and reception. Both those plays helped extend two touchdown drives for the Seahawks. Right now, he’s slated as the third back behind Zach Charbonnet and Kenneth Walker III, but if one of the two are out for a while, he could potentially see an extended workload. Regardless, he looks in good shape to get his first carries in his career (in the regular season).

Grade: A

Zamir White, Las Vegas Raiders

Opponent and Result: Minnesota Vikings, L 23-24

Statline: 6 carries, 23 yards, 1 touchdown

No doubt, 1st-round pick Brock Bowers was the most notable former Bulldog on the Raiders, but former Bulldog Zamir White also started for the Raiders today. He mostly got tough, physical four-five yard runs. White showed his strength on the run where he found paydirt, bulldozing through a couple Minnesota defenders to add on to the Raiders lead.

Other than that, White wasn’t asked to do much. The Raiders are looking to solve a quarterback competition between Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O’Connell, so the game script relied on mostly passes from both. He is also the favorite to be the lead back for the Raiders in the regular season, so his roster spot is all but secure.

Grade: C

Raiders training camp Day 5 report: Offense fails to step up first day in pads

It may have been a change of play style for the Raiders camp, but who controlled things remained the same. The defense continued to dominate.

I asked Antonio Pierce prior to practice who he expects will benefit the most from pads going on, and he said the offense without question. And he brought in a special guest last night to try and get them pumped up for it.

“If I had to predict today, I think the offensive line is going to get after it,” said Pierce. “Richie Incognito talked to the team last night. It was pretty intense. Whatever you think he said, he said.”

The offensive line certainly came out with intensity. In the early going, Andrus Peat pancake blocked Tyree Wilson to the turf. And midway through practice Thayer Munford injured his hand on a play, only to get it wrapped up and return to the field a bit later.

As far as how the rest of the offense performed, it was…not great.

The talk the offense had been doing prior to today was that of ‘just wait until pads go on.’ Well pads were on and thus far they have not backed up their words.

No question the Raiders have a very good defense. It shows for sure. But the issues with the offense go well beyond the quality of defense they’re facing.

Mostly it continues to be the quarterback play that plagues the offensive play for the Raiders in camp. The passes are just not getting to the receivers consistently.

I could count on one hand how many solid completions there were on the day. O’Connell had one good connection on a deep corner route to Jakobi Meyers.

Other than that it was a whole lotta bad for the offense.

The defense was flying around, swarming, and jawing all day long.

The closest Davante Adams came to making a play was a pass that looked like it might get there, but he had his jersey tugged on, drawing a pass interference call. And Tre Tucker simply could not get open.

Play after play, Tucker had a defender on his hip. Sometimes it was Jakorian Bennett, sometimes it was Nate Hobbs, and once it was Jack Jones. But it didn’t matter. The result was the same. Incomplete.

It wasn’t until the final drive of the day that the offense got anything going at all. It was Gardner Minshew running the offense. Kristian Fulton had a leaping grab over the middle, then DJ Turner caught one on a cross, and finally Minshew found Alex Bachman on an out to put the team at the 18 for a field goal. It was a relative positive in a day without much before that.

For the defense’s part, they were fired up and stopping everything, including the ground game. Adam Butler had a couple stops and he was sure to let the offense know on each of them, barking at them and running into the backfield to taunt them. Christian Wilkins did some dancing and talking as well.

The one thing you didn’t see much of were turnovers. There were two fumbled handoffs, one between O’Connell and Zamir White and the other between Anthony Brown and Brittain Brown. Jack Jones nearly had a pick on an ugly O’Connell pass after he was basically sacked by Maxx Crosby.

Raiders RB Zamir White named breakout candidate ahead of 2024 season

Raiders RB Zamir White named breakout candidate ahead of 2024 season

The Raiders couldn’t be more excited about Zamir White going into the 2024 season. The former fourth-round pick from Georgia was fantastic in the final month of the season and now he’ll get the first chance to replace Josh Jacobs as the team’s featured back.

In a recent article by Aaron Schatz of ESPN, he wrote about 20 young breakout candidates ahead of the 2024 season. That list included White, who was one of two running backs to make the list. Here is a snippet of what the site had to say about White going into his third season:

White had 5.4 yards per carry for the Georgia in 2021 with 11 touchdowns on 160 carries. He’s a naturally powerful runner, very physical with a strong bottom half. He also has above-average vision coming through the hole, can jump-cut to avoid tackles or run right through them.

So far, White’s NFL performance hasn’t matched what we saw in college, but the sample size is still small. He started the last four games of the 2023 season and totaled 451 yards on 104 carries with a single touchdown.

He had an mid-tier VOA (value over average) but takes a big hit in DVOA and DYAR for opponent adjustments because he faced a lot of easy run defenses. Those four starts all came against teams ranked 21st or lower in run defense DVOA.

Schatz is right that the sample size is very small for White and it’s unclear what the expectations should be for him in 2024. But there is certainly a lot of optimism and hype surrounding him going into the year. If that comes to fruition, the Raiders could be much better on offense this season than anyone anticipates.

Raiders RB Zamir White named fantasy sleeper ahead of 2024 season

Raiders RB Zamir White named fantasy sleeper ahead of 2024 season

Believe it or not, your fantasy football draft is just around the corner. Most drafts occur sometime in August and we are just two weeks away from the first preseason game of the year.

That means it’s time to start discussing potential sleepers going into the 2024 season and of course, that means that Zamir White needs to be mentioned. He is expected to be the starting running back for Las Vegas and that means he should see a ton of action.

In a recent article by The Athletic, they named one fantasy breakout player for all 32 teams. For the Raiders, that player was, of course, Zamir White. Here is what Vic Tafur had to say about the third-year running back from Georgia going into the season:

If Jerome Bettis was “The Bus,” then White is “The Tank” after this offseason’s workout regimen. There is no guarantee White will be the Raiders’ bell cow after Josh Jacobs left for Green Bay but he has four things going for him:

1) He did well in his four-start audition at the end of last season, running for 397 yards on 84 carries;

2) Coach Antonio Pierce wants to run the ball, never mind all the cool gadgets in Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers and Brock Bowers;

3) new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has spoken very highly of White, even praising his receiving skills (he only had nine catches for 60 yards in those last four games);

4) the Raiders haven’t signed another RB yet, so White’s competition is Alexander Mattison, Ameer Abdullah and rookie Dylan Laube. He could probably bench press all three at the same time.

The starting running back for the Raiders during the nine games Antonio Pierce coached in 2023 recorded 189 carries. It’s clear that Pierce wants to lean on the rushing attack and White is expected to see a majority of that work.

White is currently being drafted around pick No. 90 in most fantasy leagues, making him a massive value. Take him a few rounds earlier than that as you are going to want to make sure that he is on your team in 2024.

Raiders Top 25 players ranked

Ranking Raiders Top 25 players

It’s the heart of the big break before training camp. So, let’s do some rankings! In this case we rank the players on the roster and we count it down from 25-1. For these rankings we’re going to try to stick with what we know about the players so far and not go too much on projections, so these rankings should not considered in terms of where they might be after this season. That will be for next year’s rankings.
