Kirk Ferentz describes Zach Ortwerth, how he ended up at Iowa

Zach Ortwerth was thrust into action and shouldered the load admirably. Kirk Ferentz described the Iowa Hawkeyes tight end’s demeanor.

Everyone says the “next man up” mantra all the time. The reality is, that situation and the ability to do so are much more difficult when push comes to shove and it is time to step up.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are extremely fortunate to have Zach Ortwerth on their roster as someone who can shoulder that ask and take it on while exceeding expectations.

With the injury to Luke Lachey, Ortwerth was thrust into starting action and has taken it on while making big plays. Kirk Ferentz described who Zach Ortwerth is and how he ended up at Iowa in his weekly press conference.

“I can’t say what prepared him for it, but his recruitment is kind of interesting. Gary Kornfeld was the coach down there, has since retired, but Gary was an assistant when I used to recruit down there in the ’80s, so I’ve known him a long time.

He called, I don’t know what year it would have been, maybe 10th grade, 11th grade for Zach and just said here’s a guy you ought to keep an eye on, and he doesn’t call very often, so we appreciated that. We were able to get in early with Zach and our message resonated with he and his family.

I can’t say enough about him, the way he’s stepped in. He just plays. He’s not a 4.4 guy or a 270-pound guy, but he’s a good football player, and he’s mentally tough. He has to be because he played last year as a freshman.

This year he’s all of a sudden now carrying a heavy load and it doesn’t seem to faze him at all. He’s been the same guy since he’s been here, which I think is impressive.

I have to throw in Johnny Pascuzzi and Hayden Large, too, because we’ve got a couple pretty good players out right now, and nobody has talked about it. We’re not making it a big deal, but those guys have really done a good job. That’s what you look for. That’s what you hope you have on a team, when guys are ready to go in there and take advantage of opportunity.

All those guys are doing a good job, but Zach has been really impressive with what he’s done so far,” Ferentz said about Ortwerth, his recruitment, and other tight ends.

Ortwerth was a three-star recruit out of St. Louis, Missouri in the class of 2023 when he committed to Iowa, per 247Sports.

Coming to Iowa, Ortwerth was listed as 220 pounds. Iowa now lists him as 240 pounds after getting in the weight room and developing.

With Lachey potentially sidelined once again this week, the duties will go to Ortwerth who has taken his chance and ran with it this year as he reeled in three receptions for 66 yards last week in his first start.

Wisconsin TE target Zach Ortwerth commits to Big Ten rival

Wisconsin misses on their top remaining TE target in the 2023 recruiting class:

Wisconsin’s top remaining tight end target was 2023 three-star Zach Ortwerth, who officially committed to the University of Iowa on Monday.

Last season, the Saint Louis University High School standout caught 20 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns. He also registered 76 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble while playing outside linebacker.

Ortwerth, a Saint Louis, Missouri native, also held offers from Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Memphis, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Purdue, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The Badgers will need to head back to the drawing board if they’re going to add a TE in the 2023 recruiting class, considering they don’t appear to have any substantial leads at the moment.

3-star tight end Zach Ortwerth commits to the Iowa Hawkeyes, becomes 14th 2023 pledge

Zach Ortwerth, a three-star tight end out of Missouri, committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, becoming the 14th pledge in the 2023 class.

America’s birthday just got a little bit sweeter for Iowa Hawkeyes fans. Tight end Zach Ortwerth announced his commitment to Iowa, becoming the 14th pledge in the 2023 class for the Hawkeyes.

The 6-foot-5, 220 pound tight end out of St. Louis University in Missouri is a consensus three-star commit across 247Sports, On3 and Rivals. According to 247Sports, Ortwerth is the nation’s No. 36 tight end and the No. 15 player from Missouri.

Rivals rates Ortwerth as the No. 22 player from the Show Me State, while On3 ranks Ortwerth as the No. 27 tight end and the 14th-best player from Missouri.

In the 247Sports composite rankings, Ortwerth is regarded as the nation’s No. 737 player overall, the No. 37 tight end and the No. 16 player from Missouri. Meanwhile, in the On3 consensus rankings, Ortwerth checks in as the No. 771 player nationally, the No. 41 tight end and the No. 18 player from Missouri.

Ortwerth committed to the Hawkeyes over offers from schools such as Illinois, Indiana, Memphis, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Purdue, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The commitment from the 6-foot-5 tight end will no doubt delight Marco Lainez III, the Hawkeyes’ three-star quarterback commit in the 2023 class.

Watching Ortwerth’s junior season film, he displays soft hands, moves well in space for a bigger-bodied pass catcher, can high-point the football and has an understanding of route concepts and runs those routes smoothly. He’s a big-time addition to the Hawkeyes’ 2023 class and represents new Iowa tight ends coach Abdul Hodge’s first commitment since taking over.

Here’s a look at Ortwerth’s junior season Hudl film from St. Louis University, a peek into his full recruiting profile and a glance at Iowa’s complete list of 2023 commits.
