Falcons DL Zach Harrison injured in fourth quarter vs. Broncos

Falcons defensive lineman Zach Harrison was ruled out on Sunday’s contest against the Denver Broncos with a knee injury.

Falcons defensive lineman Zach Harrison was ruled out of Sunday’s contest against the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter with a knee injury.

This marked the third injury of the game for an Atlanta team that came into the contest already banged up. Before Harrison went down, cornerback Kevin King was ruled out with a head injury early on and wide receiver Darnell Mooney was listed as questionable late in the second half with a hamstring injury.

Harrison, who was considered a potential breakout candidate ahead of the season, came into this game with 11 combined tackles, two of which were solo. He totaled one solo tackle and one assist before he was sidelined Sunday.

The Falcons will drop their second consecutive game at the end of this one, trailing 38-6 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Falcons list new starting defensive lineman on depth chart

The Falcons no longer list defensive lineman Zach Harrison as a starter on their depth chart…

The Atlanta Falcons are 1-2 but the fan base hasn’t completely given up on them yet. Since the Falcons lost to two undefeated teams and upset the 2-1 Eagles on the road, things may not be as bad as they appear. With that said, there are still some problematic areas that the team needs to clean up.

The pass rush has been among the least effective in the NFL this season. While you never want to put too much stock into sack numbers, Atlanta’s three sacks rank 31st in the entire league. For context, there are currently 10 teams with at least 10 sacks this season.

The Falcons are still tinkering with things along their front seven under defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake. On Tuesday, the team released a new depth chart with a few changes up front. Defensive lineman Zach Harrison is no longer listed as a starter.

The Falcons moved defensive tackle Eddie Goldman into the starting lineup, listing Harrison as a backup to Grady Jarrett. Goldman is one of the few defensive linemen on the roster who can play that nose tackle spot, so it’s not a shock to see this reflected on the depth chart.

Harrison, a former third-round pick out of Ohio State, racked up 33 tackles (18 solo), five QB hits and three sacks in 16 games last season. He was listed as a starting defensive end for the first three weeks. However, Harrison’s playing time hasn’t reflected that of a starter this season.

In three games, the former Buckeye has played just 18 percent percent of the team’s defensive snaps (39 total) and has two total tackles. Goldman has played close to 40 percent of the defensive snaps this season, which is close to his career average.

Regardless of what the depth chart says, the team has a deep group of defensive linemen and will continue to rotate them. The Falcons haven’t played second-round pick Ruke Orhorhoro or fourth-rounder Brandon Dorlous.

Both rookie defensive linemen have been healthy scratches through the first three weeks of the season. Perhaps that will change in Week 4.

Falcons DL Zach Harrison, two others miss Wednesday’s practice

Falcons defensive lineman Zach Harrison and two others missed Wednesday’s practice

After getting Tuesday off, the Atlanta Falcons returned to the practice field on Wednesday but weren’t at full strength. Safety DeMarcco Hellams, who suffered an ankle injury during Friday’s preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins, was one of three players absent.

Fellow safety Dane Cruikshank and defensive lineman Zach Harrison were also missing from Wednesday’s practice. Rookie running back Jace McClellan, who led the team in rushing yards against the Dolphins, continues to wear the yellow non-contact jersey, per to team reporter Terrin Waack:

The Falcons made a handful of roster moves over the past week as injuries have started piling up. First, wide receiver Rondale Moore went down during joint practices in Miami. Three more players went down in Friday’s preseason opener.

Rookie linebacker Bralen Trice, cornerback Harrison Hand and safety DeMarcco Hellams all appeared to suffer serious injuries. While Trice and Harrison were placed on the injured reserve list, Hellams remains on the active roster.

Atlanta worked out safety Justin Simmons on Tuesday but left without a contract. The team did sign former Pro Bowl receiver Jakeem Grant along with defensive backs William Hooper and Josh Thompson.

Zach Harrison off to good start in Falcons training camp

Looks like Harrison is impressing early on in Falcons’ camp. #GoBucks

With training camp getting underway for NFL teams reports are starting to circulate about which young players are leaving a good first impression. Former Ohio State, and now Falcons edge rusher, Zach Harrison, is amongst those.

In an article written on SBNation’s Falcoholic, Adnan Ikic and Kevin Knight praised the rookie and had this to say about his second day of training camp.

“Third round pick DE Zach Harrison had a standout day as well,” wrote the pair. “He came away with what would have been sacks against both Heinicke and Desmond Ridder on nearly consecutive plays during the red zone portion at the end of practice. He was the among the most impressive defensive linemen.”

Harrison has always had all the tools to be a star edge rusher. Coming in as a five-star in the 2019 class he had a very good blend of size, length, power, and athleticism.

He never quite reached superstar level for the Buckeyes but was still a very good player who had a productive career at Ohio State. Harrison made either a media or coaches-selected all-conference team in each of the last three seasons.

We wish Harrison the best moving forward as his NFL career gets underway in Atlanta.

Former Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison signs rookie deal with Falcons

In case you missed it – one more contract signed! #GoBucks

We continue to follow all of the NFL rookie signings for Ohio State football players that heard their names called in the draft three weeks ago and have another one to report to you.

Former 5-star prospect and four-year starting defensive end, Zach Harrison, has inked his entry contract with the Atlanta Falcons according to a team announcement last Tuesday. As we’ve mentioned multiple times, these contracts aren’t usually public knowledge, but we like to lean on the website Spotrac and its sliding scale of estimated NFL contracts to get a ballpark of what the value of the contract might be.

In this case, it’s estimated that Harrison’s contract has a total worth of around $5,568,448 over four years, with $1,049,780 of that being guaranteed as a signing bonus.

Harrison makes four of the six Ohio State players drafted that have gotten their rookie deals done joining, Paris Johnson Jr, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Luke Wypler.

We’ll continue to update our Ohio State NFL draft rookie contract tracker when the other two former Buckeyes (C.J. Stroud and Dawand Jones) finish their deals.

Five out of the six members of Atlanta’s 2023 NFL draft class are now under contract after the team signed third-round pick Zach Harrison on Tuesday. The former Ohio State edge rusher is one of several additions the Falcons made to their pass rush this season.

In 2022, Harrison racked up 24 QB hurries and six sacks for the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 86.1 last season — his third straight year with an overall PFF grade above 80.

Now that Harrison has signed his contract, second-round pick Matthew Bergeron is the last remaining member of Atlanta’s rookie class without a deal.

Jersey numbers for all Ohio State NFL rookies

A look at all the jersey numbers new Ohio State rookies will be wearing in the various minicamps. #GoBucks

NFL rookie camps have begun in earnest for many teams in the league, and that means the six drafted former Ohio State players, as well as some undrafted free agents, have begun the next step of their football journey.

To do that, each of those players had to be assigned a jersey number by their new team. Some may not change from what they wore in the colors of Scarlet and Gray. Others will change because of the NFL’s numbering system or because a current player on the team already has the number spoken for.

Regardless, we know all of those jersey numbers for former Buckeyes newly minted as NFL players, so here’s a rundown of what C.J. Stroud, Paris Johnson, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba will wearing during rookie minicamps and perhaps beyond.

Here’s where things stand today.

2023 NFL draft grades: Falcons pick DL Zach Harrison at No. 75 overall

2023 NFL draft grades: Falcons pick Ohio State DL Zach Harrison at No. 75 overall, via @DillySanders

The Atlanta Falcons address the defensive side of the ball after going offense with first two selections, taking Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison. The Falcons needed some more depth for the edge after making a ton of moves in free agency in the front seven. Harrison wasn’t the same type of dominant that we’ve seen come out of that school in the past, but still has real pro potential.

Harrison has got a big frame with some great physical traits that would get any fan excited, but his lack of production will be a cause of worry. It’s a boom-or-bust type of Day 2 pick, because it has great potential to work out, but he also has a higher than average chance to just be a guy that sticks around the bottom of the roster while getting by with his physical tools.

Grade: C+
