Former Eagles TE Zach Ertz to sign with Lions ahead of NFC Championship game

Former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz to sign with Detroit Lions ahead of NFC Championship game matchup vs. San Francisco 49ers

The Detroit Lions already have Sam LaPorta on the roster.

Still, with a historic NFC Championship matchup against the 49ers looming, Dan Campbell added a future Hall of Famer.

Tom Pelissero reports that former Eagles tight end Zach Ertz is joining the Lions for the rest of the postseason.

The Cardinals and tight end Zach Ertz mutually parted ways. Arizona decided to move forward with Trey McBride as the feature tight end while allowing Ertz to finish the season elsewhere.

Ertz went unclaimed, and he’s now a free agent and can sign with any team.

Ertz exited Philadelphia with 579 receptions, 6,267 yards, and 38 touchdowns, the most catches by a tight end in a single season. He’ll go down as one of the best players in franchise history, making a significant impact in the city.

He’ll now have an opportunity to win another Super Bowl, this time with Detroit.

5 NFL free agents who could help your playoff-bound team, including Ndamukong Suh

Which NFL free agents could help your playoff-bound team? There are some good names out there.

The NFL playoffs are right around the corner, and postseason-bound teams are looking over the state of their rosters for a January push.

The Baltimore Ravens bolstered their offense by signing running back Dalvin Cook to the practice squad on Thursday, hinting that more signings like it could be on the way for playoff football.

While some of the players on this list haven’t played all that much this season (if at all), they’re all proven veterans who could factor in for a couple of games to help a team compete for a Super Bowl.

Let’s run down five of these names and try to identify how they could help and which teams make the most sense at this point.

John Harbaugh addresses Zach Ertz rumors: ‘We like our tight ends’

Following the team’s bye week, Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh spoke with the media on Monday. One of the questions Harbaugh was asked was about the level of interest from the Ravens in acquiring veteran free-agent tight end Zach Ertz. …

Following the team’s bye week, Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh spoke with the media on Monday.

One of the questions Harbaugh was asked was about the level of interest from the Ravens in acquiring veteran free-agent tight end Zach Ertz.

“Any time a great player is out there, you sure look at it,” Harbaugh said. “But I would say this about that right now: We like our tight ends. We really like our guys. Like I said, I’m not ruling out Mark Andrews for the down-the-road future at all. Mark is so darn tough. Mark is one of those guys that really and truly … You say a guy eats, sleeps and breathes football; that’s Mark Andrews. So, he’s going to do everything he can to get back down the road. But the guys that we have right now – our young guys – they’re real guys, they’re real players, and I think, right now, we’ll just roll with those guys.”

Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz named Baltimore as one of four teams most interested in signing Ertz following his requested release from the Arizona Cardinals.

Without Andrews in the lineup, the Ravens will primarily rely on second-year tight end Isaiah Likely to step up in the passing game — which he did against the Los Angeles Chargers last week with 40 yards on four catches. Fellow second-year tight end Charlie Kolar has a chance to prove himself over the season’s final stretch as well. Baltimore also has a pair of tight ends on the practice squad in Scotty Washington and undrafted free agent Travis Vokolek.

Report: Bills expressed interest in TE Zach Ertz

Report: #Bills expressed interest in TE Zach Ertz:

The Buffalo Bills have been linked with a name the team has been connected to in the past: Tight end Zach Ertz.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bills are one of at least four teams to have expressed interest in him:

Ertz to Buffalo is an idea we’ve heard before.

Last week, the Arizona Cardinals released Ertz. He was subject to waivers but he was not claimed.  Ertz is free to sign with any team.

Ertz, 33, has played 12 seasons in the NFL. A bulk of that was with the Philadelphia Eagles, another team interested in re-signing him now, from 2013-2021.

In October 2021, Ertz was traded to the Cardinals and at that time the Bills had expressed interest in him at that time but the deal was nixed by the Eagles–according to Ertz himself.

“There were a couple teams extremely interested, Buffalo being one of them,” Ertz said in May 2023. “It was almost a done deal, but it just didn’t get over the finish line.”

Ertz to the Bills now seems much less likely with the emergence of first-round rookie Dalton Kincaid combined with Dawson Knox already being at the position. However, Knox is currently on injured reserve due to a wrist injury. That could potentially be more serious if Buffalo does truly have interest in adding Ertz.

Bills Wire will provide updates as information is made available.

Ravens among four teams ‘most interested’ in Zach Ertz

Ravens among four teams ‘most interested’ in Zach Ertz

The Baltimore Ravens are adjusting to life without Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews as they gear up for a difficult final five-game stretch of the season.

The Ravens may be looking to make an addition at the tight end position, as according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, Baltimore is among four teams most interested in signing veteran free agent tight end Zach Ertz.

The two-win Arizona Cardinals released the 33-year-old tight end per his request earlier in the week. After clearing waivers, Ertz can sign with any team of his choosing.

While Ertz is not the same player he once was in his prime with the Philadelphia Eagles, he can still contribute to a contending team with a need at the tight end position.

The Ravens turned to second-year tight end Isaiah Likely in Week 12 against the Los Angeles Chargers — the first full game without Andrews in the lineup. Likely responded with 40 yards on four catches, demonstrating his elusive after-the-catch ability.

While Likely should remain the team’s top option at the position in the passing game, Ertz is a potential upgrade over fellow second-year tight end Charlie Kolar. It would provide quarterback Lamar Jackson with another safety blanket in the short-to-intermediate passing game.

In seven games played this season with the Cardinals, Ertz caught 27 passes on 43 targets for 187 yards and one touchdown.

Former Cardinals TE Zach Ertz could return to Eagles

Adam Schefter reports the Eagles have interest Ertz, who played for Philly from 2013-2021 before he was traded to the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals announced the release of tight end Zach Ertz on Thursday. With the emergence of second-year tight end Trye McBride and the team sitting at 2-10 on the season, Ertz requested his release to be able to sign with a contender.

He has since cleared waivers and is now free to sign with any team.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there might be a return to Philadelphia.

Schefter reports the 10-1 Eagles, Ertz’s previous team, have interest in Ertz.

Ertz played for the Eagles from 2012-2021, when he was traded to the Cardinals.

He needs 11 catches to become the Eagles’ all-time leading receiver.

Ertz caught 579 passes as a member of the Eagles. Harold Carmichael, who played between 1971-1983, had 589 total catches for Philly.

Eagles expected to have interest in signing free agent TE Zach Ertz

The Cardinals are waiving veteran tight end Zach Ertz, who requested his release and Adam Schefter reports the Eagles have interest in signing the free agent

The Eagles are always looking to add talent to the roster, and with Dallas Goedert injured, the team could look to bring back a future Ring of Honor nominee.

The Cardinals and tight end Zach Ertz mutually parted ways, with Arizona deciding to move forward with Trey McBride as the feature tight end while allowing Ertz to finish the season somewhere else.

Ertz went unclaimed, and he’s now a free agent, and can sign with any team. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Philadelphia does in fact have interest in adding Ertz to the roster.

Goedert is listed as doubtful for Week 13 against the 49ers.

Still, production at the position has been limited when he’s out of the lineup, and Ertz could provide Jalen Hurts with a trusted security blanket if needed.

Ertz exited Philadelphia with 579 receptions, 6,267 yards, and 38 touchdowns, the most catches by a tight end in a single season. He’ll go down as one of the best players in franchise history, making a significant impact in the city.

A Wisconsin legend is working to supplant Adam Schefter

A Wisconsin legend is working to supplant Adam Schefter

Former Wisconsin defensive end and NFL legend J.J. Watt has a new angle in retirement. First, he’s part of the CBS NFL gameday crew as an analyst. Second, he is a cheerleader for his brother T.J. and tweets whenever he makes a big play. Third, he might now be entering the breaking news business.

Yesterday, the Wisconsin legend broke the news that Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz requested, and was granted, his release from the Arizona Cardinals. The long-time star tight end is now looking for a contender to join for the rest of the 2023 season.

There were follow-up reports that the Ravens and Eagles both make sense as destinations. But move over Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, there might be some company in your world.

Zach Ertz gave up a game check to get released

The Cardinals save more than $486,000 with the concession by Ertz.

The Arizona Cardinals announced the release of veteran tight end Zach Ertz on Thursday. He requested a release to be able to play for a contender.

It came with a concession.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Ertz agreed to give up this week’s game check to facilitate the move.

The Cardinals are on the hook for the roughly $2.92 million in salary remaining this season unless a team claims him off waivers.

The agreement saves the Cardinals about $486,000. Those savings should roll over to next year.

Why did the Cardinals make that request? That’s a different story. The organization has long had the reputation of being cheap. This won’t help things.

However, as Rapoport notes, if Ertz lands with a team that ends up in the postseason, he might end up more than making what he is giving up.

Cardinals release TE Zach Ertz after his request

Ertz requested a release to go play for a contender. He caught 27 passes in seven games before getting hurt.

Former Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman J.J. Watt broke some team news on Thursday that tight end Zach Ertz requested to be released and that the Cardinals would agree to it.

The team announced it later that Ertz was released from injured reserve.

Watt and Ertz are close friends, which is why Watt was able to break the news.

The 11-year veteran played in seven games this season after coming back from a torn ACL. He caught 27 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown before suffering a quad injury that landed him on IR.

Since Ertz got hurt, second-year tight end Trey McBride has emerged as the team’s No. 1 tight end. If and when Ertz returned from his quad injury, he was likely going to see a reduced role on offense.

Ertz wishes to join a team in playoff contention. He wants to win another Super Bowl.

Because it is after the trade deadline, he is subject waivers.

If he goes unclaimed, the Cardinals are on the hook for the remainder of his $8.755 million salary, or about $2.92 million. Any team claiming him would pay him that and have him under contract in 2024 for $7.95 million with a $1.5 million roster bonus due in March.

In another move, the Cardinals re-signed defensive lineman Ben Stille, whom they released from the active roster earlier in the week, to the practice squad.
