Last-minute fantasy football thoughts for Week 12

Touchdown Wire’s Pat Yasinskas shares 11 last-minute fantasy football thoughts of Week 12.

As you get ready to finalize your lineups for Week 12 of the NFL season, here are 11 random and last-minute fantasy football thoughts:

11. Eddy Pineiro will bounce back

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago kicker is under a lot of heat after missing five kicks in his last four games. Things hit a low point last week against the Rams. Pineiro missed two field-goal attempts and the Bears elected to pass on him trying another one and went for it on fourth down. But the Bears have been uncommonly patient and supportive of their kicker. He’ll reward them with a big day against the Giants.

Dallas Goedert named Eagles’ most underrated player

Dallas Goedert is one of the top-25 players under the age of 25 in the NFL, but according to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles star still isn’t getting the total recognition he deserves.

During a recent ranking of all 32 NFL teams most underrated player, Goedert was the Eagles player of interest.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: TE DALLAS GOEDERT
Zach Ertz is Philly’s number one tight end, but Dallas Goedert has been just as good, earning an 81.4 PFF grade that ranks seventh at the position. He isn’t a deep threat, but he is dangerous after the catch and has enhanced a short-passing offense. On targets of less than 10 yards downfield, Goedert is PFF’s third-highest-graded tight end, and he is second in yards after the catch per reception at 8.6. Not to mention, he has earned a run-blocking grade of 83.5, the best mark among all tight ends.

Goedert has already established himself as one of the NFL’s best blocking tight ends and he’s vastly improved as a route runner.

QUARTERBACKS

MATT RYAN- $6700 DRAFTKINGS, $7900 FANDUEL

Matt Ryan strolls into Week 12 with a dream matchup vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ryan has been super consistent and is averaging 22.7 DraftKings points per game. Tampa Bay is allowing 290 passing yards per game and ranks 30th against opposing quarterbacks. There are not many favorable matchups this week so Ryan comes in as one of your safest plays in both cash games and tournaments. The ideal pairing would be with either Julio Jones or Calvin Ridley for your stack.

DREW BREES- $6600 DRAFTKINGS, $8500 FANDUEL

Drew Brees has been a little up and down due to injuries this season but a matchup with the Carolina Panther at home in the dome should change things. It looks like this offense is coming around and Alvin Kamara will be a prime receiving target to bolster this passing offense. Brees is averaging 17 points per game and should provide a safe floor for all your daily fantasy needs. For cash games, a lot of my builds will start with a Brees and Thomas stack.

RUNNING BACKS

ALVIN KAMARA-  $8200 DRAFTKINGS, $8300 FANDUEL

Alvin Kamara is coming off a 22 point DraftKings showing in Week 11 where he didn’t find the endzone. He hauled in 10 receptions which is a great sign for him moving forward. Like I stated above I like attacking this Panther defense and even more so from the running back position. Carolina ranks 29th against opposing running backs and they are allowing 128 yards rushing per game. Combine that with the dual-threat presence Kamara provides and we should see him as the top-scoring running back in Week 12.

DERRICK HENRY- $6900 DRAFTKINGS, $7100 FANDUEL

Derrick Henry doesn’t get the respect he should as a fantasy player if you ask me. He is averaging 17 points per game and is coming off a 36 and 24 point performance in back to back weeks. He is now well-rested coming off a bye week and has a home matchup vs the Jaguars. Jacksonville ranks 25th against opposing running backs and allowing almost a league worse 134 yards per game on the ground. Lock in Henry as a low owned tournament play that can separate you from the pack in Week 12.

WIDE RECEIVERS

CALVIN RIDLEY- $6500 DRAFTKINGS, $6700 FANDUEL

Calvin Ridley could be called a boom or bust play due to his inconsistency but he will still be on my roster in Week 12. Ridley is averaging 14 points per game and is coming off 31 point game versus the Panthers. The Panthers are a middle-tier defense against the pass and now he gets a bump to one of the worst secondaries in the league. A matchup versus Tampa Bay is as good as it gets. Tampa Bay ranks 32nd against opposing wide receivers and is allowing 290 yards through the air. Both Calvin Ridley and Julio Jones are in line for monster games so an approach I will be taking is making lineups with each of them in one.

JAMISON CROWDER- $6200 DRAFTKINGS, $6500 FANDUEL

Jamison Crowder has been shocking the fantasy world week after week.
Crowder has scored touchdowns in 3 straight games and has been a focal point of this Jet offense. He is averaging 12 points per game over the season but those numbers are low due to injuries to his starting quarterback. Since Darnold has been back he has a 22, 19, and 18 point game in his last 3. Pair that with a matchup against Oakland who ranks 30th against opposing wide receivers and we have a nice mid-tier low owned play at wide receiver.

TIGHT ENDS

ZACH ERTZ- $6000 DRAFTKINGS, $6100 FANDUEL

Zach Ertz is one of the only receivers left for the Eagles who can actually catch the ball. The Eagles receivers are all hobbled and Ertz is the safe play to target in this matchup versus the Seahawks. Ertz gets a home game versus a Seattle secondary who ranks 26th against opposing tight ends. The Seahawks are giving up 271 passing yards through the air and have been picked on all year. Ertz should be the safest play for both cash games and tournaments and will be my highest owned tight end this week.

JARED COOK- $4500 DRAFTKINGS, $6000 FANDUEL

Similar to all the stats I placed above for Brees and Kamara, Cook comes in as a solid play due to his matchup versus Carolina. The Saints have a weak receiving core outside of Michael Thomas so Cook has been a focal point of this offense from the tight end slot. I’m not in love with Cook, so I would look to mix in some other plays or pay up for Ertz. Cook will be a low owned tournament play who can find the endzone. Darren Waller, Ryan Griffin and Vance McDonald will also be sprinkled into my tournament mix at tight end.

DEFENSES

BILLS- $3400 DRAFTKINGS, $4700 FANDUEL

The Denver Broncos surprised a bunch of people by putting up points versus the Vikings in Week 11, but I think that was more of a fluke game. Now they travel to Buffalo and have to face the Bills Mafia in Week 12. The Bills come in as one of the top plays on Defense and I will target them in my cash games as long as I have the salary to get there. I like targeting home defenses and the fact we can combine that with the fact the Broncos will traveling through time zones for a 1pm Eastern game and we have a solid play in Week 12.

STEELERS- $4000 DRAFTKINGS, $5000 FANDUEL

The defense who is in a matchup versus the Bengals has been a prime target for me if you have been reading my column week after week. The Bengals are bad and the Steelers have a top 10 defense that is getting better week to week. The Steelers have averaged 12 fantasy points per game and have been forcing turnovers and accumulating sacks. Play it safe at the defense position and either lock up the Bills or Steelers in Week 12.

Seeing Zach Ertz cry to refs on film gave Stephon Gilmore added confidence

Stephon Gilmore throws a little shade at Zach Ertz after the game.

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore saw something on game film that gave him supreme confidence in his matchup against Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz.

Gilmore spotted Ertz “crying” to referees in a previous game, according to NESN’s Doug Kyed. Gilmore said after the Patriots’ 17-10 win on Sunday that emotional outburst was reason enough for the cornerback to believe he could get the tight end rattled. While Gilmore handled coverage duties on a number of different Eagles’ pass-catchers on Sunday, he moved to coverage on Ertz on third downs to take away quarterback Carson Wentz’s go-to target in those situations.

The results were good: the Patriots held the Eagles to just 10 points. The Eagles were just 3 of 13 on third downs. Ertz, meanwhile, enjoyed a nice night (9 catches, 94 yards), though his successes came mostly without Gilmore in coverage.

Gilmore, of course, saw more than just emotional appeals to offcials during his film study — the cornerback is a film junkie, and is extremely thorough. He explained what his plans were for his matchups with Ertz, who is an unusual matchup for Gilmore, a cornerback that has spent the entire season on top receivers.

“He’s a tight end. He’s not as fast as some of the guys I cover. If he has a step on me, I can recover real fast. I’ve got to slow myself down a little bit to play him tighter, because I’ve been playing faster guys. So that’s what I did,” Gilmore told reporters, adding that he tried to avoid a physical battle with Ertz, via CLNS’s Evan Lazar. “You’ve got to let him run, because if you fight too physical with him, he’s going to push off. That’s what he’s good at, so you’ve got to be smart.”

Eagles’ TE’s could have huge day vs. Patriots with Patrick Chung ruled out

Patriots rule out safety Patrick Chung vs. Eagles

[jwplayer A3qs8Nwq]

The Philadelphia Eagles were already starting to become tight end dominant in the passing game, and with Patriots star safety Patrick Chung being ruled out for Sunday, 12 personnel could be the formation of choice.

New England ruled out Chung for Sunday’s road game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries to his heel and chest.

Veteran safety Duron Harmon will get the start in his place.

With the Eagles having the best tight end tandem in the NFL, Bill Belichick and company can expect to see a ton of Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on the field together.

During the last meeting between these two teams, Ertz had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles thrilling Super Bowl LII victory against New England.

With Alshon Jeffery also out of this game, it’ll be pertinent for Carson Wentz to develop a rhythm with both guys early on, helping to open up things for JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Miles Sanders.

Expect New England to dabble with a different scheme on Sunday, entrusting All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore with the job of slowing down Zach Ertz. Until Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews or Arcega-Whiteside can prove themselves as viable threats on the outside, Gilmore will likely be best served to shadow Ertz on Sunday and forcing someone else on the Eagles offense to beat New England.

That man could end up being Goedert, who has the skill level to take advantage of any mismatch presented to him.

3 keys for Patriots to beat Eagles in Week 11

Three keys for the New England Patriots to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11 of the 2019 season.

The New England Patriots (8-1) will look to rebound after their pre-bye loss, in a Super Bowl LII rematch in Philadelphia versus the Eagles (5-4) on Sunday. Here are three keys for New England, in hopes for a victory.

1. Shore up run defense

After appearing to have no weaknesses during the first half of their season, the Patriots defense has allowed 184.5 rushing yards per game over their last two contests.

The Eagles have one of the NFL’s better offensive lines, and their two-back attack of Jordan Howard and rookie Miles Sanders poses problems for a defense that sometimes struggles against offenses that efficiently run the inside zone out of the shotgun and spread-shotgun formations.

Stopping the run is a top priority here, even if that means New England has to go back to tinkering to four-man defensive lines consistently for the first time this season. Can this year’s personnel play well in that?

2. Limit passing game out of two-tight end personnel

With DeSean Jackson out, the Eagles have relied heavily on 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR) with both tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on the field at the same time.

In this formation, the Eagles not only have a beefier lineup the can block for the running game, they also have the personnel to run RPOs and find mismatches with their athletic pass catching tight ends.

“The RPOs – there’s a couple different versions of them – they use both and they have,” Bill Belichick said recently. They incorporated it into their offense several years ago and continue to use them.”

In Ertz, the Eagles have what is basically a very effective big inside receiver. It’s worth wondering if New England will either double cover him on third down, or place Stephon Gilmore on him, with the injuries and play of the Philadelphia’s depleted wide receiving core.

“Yeah he’s pretty good. He’s really good at everything,” Belichick says of Ertz.

“In the passing game, man routes, he can get open against a variety of defenders. He’s a tough guy to match up against. Until they come out of the huddle, it’s hard to really know where he’s going to be. He lines up in the tight end traditional location, but not a high, high percentage of the time. He’s in different spots.”

Ertz — seven catches, 67 yards, game-winning touchdown — was a handful in Super Bowl LII, and Goedert, their second-round pick following their Super Bowl win, poses a whole new set of problems.

“I think they play two tight ends more than any other team in the league,”  Belichick says.

“Those two guys combined play a lot. “It’s usually Ertz in 11-personnel but not always. Goedert plays in there a decent amount too, and obviously they’re both on the field when they go to 12. They’re, I would say, interchangeable. They’re able to move guys around to different spots. I’d say he plays probably a little more tight end than Ertz does, but they both play it and they can both extend outside and in slot, play off each other as well as.”

3. Switch up approach on offense (if needed)

The Patriots had gotten buy with less-than-stellar play from their offense as of late, but with their schedule heating up, that’s not longer viable.

The team showed some success versus the Ravens with a hurry-up approach, and that may be something the Patriots need to revisit on Sunday, if necessary.

Then again, Philadelphia has been so poor in stopping the pass, that this may be the turning of the tide for Tom Brady, who is due for a 45-plus pass attempt game in which he meticulously picks apart a defense with supreme pre-snap reads.

With rookie first-round pick N’Keal Harry probably making his debut, he could also be a factor.

Regardless, the Patriots may need to veer a bit from what they’ve done so far this season on offense.
