Former Youngstown State LB Alex Howard has committed to Texas A&M

It’s official: Former Youngstown State LB Alex Howard has committed to Texas A&M

Texas A&M and new head coach Mike Elko have added a third player from the transfer portal in the form of former Youngstown State linebacker Alex Howard, as Elko continues to add quality veteran depth to a defense that has dealt with recent attrition.

While other positions, such as cornerback, deserve the most attention, the Aggies will lose two of their top three linebackers, as star junior Edgerrin Cooper has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, while senior Chris Russell Jr. is out of collegiate eligibility, placing incoming stud sophomore Taurean York as the lone linebacker with proven experience. Immediate help is coming, as Howard announced via X that he has officially committed to Texas A&M for the 2024 season.

Knowing the importance of the position in SEC play, Alex Howard’s three seasons at Youngstown State showed a player who improved year after year, accumulating 142 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, five sacks, one interception, five pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 38 total games

This season, Howard, who stands at 6’2″and weighs 230 pounds, recorded 76 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and three pass deflections during the 2023 season, earning an All-Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention recognition in the process.

Ohio State football great on Youngstown State sideline

Ohio State football great on Youngstown State sideline #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team will kick off its 2023 season opener against the Youngstown State Penguins at noon today. Although most people are commenting or laughing at the fact Ohio State is playing a lower-level, FCS opponent, there are some pretty cool connections between the two Ohio universities.

Youngstown State has been a frequent transfer destination for some former Ohio State Buckeyes including [autotag]Marcus Hooker[/autotag], who is the starting safety for the Penguins this season. Hooker transferred to Youngstown State last spring along with former walk-on receiver, [autotag]Blaize Exline[/autotag].

Another fun connection that Ohio State has with Youngstown State is that a former Buckeye great roams their sidelines in former quarterback, [autotag]Mike Tomczak[/autotag].

Now most people remember Tomczak for his cameo in the CBS hit comedy, “Yes, Dear”, but he actually played for Ohio State from 1981 through 1984 and had an extremely long NFL career from 1985 through 2000 and has been coaching for the Penguins since 2017. Tomczak is the current advisor to the head coach and we wish him good luck!

Ohio State football issues availability report for Youngstown State Penguins

Ohio State football issues availability report for Youngstown State Penguins #GoBucks

The fine folks with the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team have issued the availability report for the game against the Youngstown State Penguins and as expected some new names have popped up after the first game against the Indiana Hoosiers. The report is still fairly positive as no one surprising is listed as out, but a starter is listed as questionable in [autotag]Josh Proctor[/autotag].

With the Buckeyes taking on an FCS opponent, there is a high likely hood that we won’t see Proctor play in this game, but it appears they have every intention of running him through pre-game warm-ups. We touched on Malik Hartford possibly seeing an increase in opportunities and the Proctor injury makes Hartford’s appearance on the field a guarantee. Incoming Syracuse transfer, [autotag]Ja’Had Carter[/autotag] will also likely see an increase in snaps. The report is as follows:

QUESTIONABLE

  • SAF Josh Proctor
OUT
  • WR Kyion Grayes
  • TE Zak Herbstreit
  • DL Will Smith Jr.
  • WR Reis Stocksdale
  • SAF Kourt Williams II

North Dakota State unleashed 4 fullbacks in lineup for amazing touchdown run

North Dakota State unleashed four fullbacks on this awesome touchdown run.

Fullbacks are people, too!

Long football’s most underappreciated position, the North Dakota State Bison showed the love to the big boys Saturday by unleashing a four-fullback set in its game against the Youngstown State Penguins.

The lead fullback on the play, senior Hunter Luepke, joined his fullback brethren on the gridiron on a fourth-and-one red zone chance for the Bison. The play call called for Luepke to get the handoff, and his fellow fullbacks and offensive linemen to bulldoze the way forward.

The football gods smiled on North Dakota State’s respect for the fullback, granting Luepke a clear lane to scamper in for a touchdown.

The score got the Bison up on the Penguins 14-0 to close out the first quarter.

North Dakota State instantly shouted out the four-fullback touchdown play. Even the Bison’s merch shows great respect for the fullbacks on the team.

A Walter Payton Award candidate, Luepke has already had a phenomenal start to the season at fullback for the Bison. He’s rushed for 333 yards and six touchdowns and hauled in an additional 87 yards and two scores in the air through four games. Saturday’s fullback-friendly touchdown only adds to his possible candidacy for the top award in FCS for an offensive player.

The 3-1 Bison will try to hold on to their lead over the Penguins heading into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game.

A win puts them at 4-1, and adds further proof to the power of the fullback.

Why Southern Illinois Will Win

You don’t just dropkick North Dakota State 38-14 without being able to do something right.

Southern Illinois lost the opener to North Dakota when the defense struggled against the run, but it all came together with a brilliant performance against the Bison. And how did it work?

Time of possession.

The Saluki defense wasn’t anything special, but the offense seemingly converted every third down try as the team held on to the ball for 41 minutes and never let the Bison get into a groove.

Youngstown State couldn’t stop Northern Iowa on third downs in the 21-0 loss and only had the ball for 26 minutes.

Why Youngstown State Will Win

The defense hasn’t been bad.

The offense has struggled, but to be fair, it went against North Dakota State and Northern Iowa – SIU loss for the Bison aside, the two stars of the MVC. The D, though, allowed just six points to the Panthers before a late run that put it away, and it has just enough to keep SIU’s offense from going off.

The Salukis were great throwing the ball against the Bison, but the running game stalled in the blowout loss to North Dakota. If Youngstown State can just keep the chains moving even a little bit, it has a shot to keep the score low and pull this off.

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Illinois rolls North Dakota State and comes back and clunks against a punchless Youngstown State? It’s not likely.

The Salukis will have issues against the Penguin pass rush, and the game won’t get out of hand, but they’ll bring enough of a passing attack to build on the epic win of last Saturday.

Northern Iowa (0-1) vs Youngstown State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Northern Iowa Will Win

The Panthers played well against South Dakota State, owned the game after a big second quarter, and then collapsed late giving up a touchdown with 19 seconds to play and doing nothing on a last gasp drive.

On the plus side, the team was able to get into a position to win even though the offense struggled, there weren’t a slew of mistakes, and QB Will McElvain wasn’t awful as he spread the ball around a bit.

Yeah, Youngstown State had to play North Dakota State in the opener, but the offense struggled with just 171 yards and no running game to count on, but …

Why Youngstown State Will Win

The Penguin defense did a decent job agains the defending national champs.

New head coach Doug Phillips had his D working, giving up yards in a bend-not-break sort of way. The secondary allowed just 74 passing yards, but that’s because the defensive front was hit hard by the Bison rushing attack.

On the other side, the UNI offense struggled. There wasn’t much for the running game with just 28 yards and no big dashes, and it was a struggle to keep things moving.

What’s Going To Happen

Which team will overcome the disappointing start? Youngstown State wasn’t all that bad considering who it was playing, while Northern Iowa needs this win to avoid a disastrous start.

Which offense will work? Neither one – at least not all that well – but after the late collapse, the UNI defense will make amends and hold up to stuff the YSU ground attack.
