Ohio State football great on Youngstown State sideline

Ohio State football great on Youngstown State sideline #GoBucks

The [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] team will kick off its 2023 season opener against the Youngstown State Penguins at noon today. Although most people are commenting or laughing at the fact Ohio State is playing a lower-level, FCS opponent, there are some pretty cool connections between the two Ohio universities.

Youngstown State has been a frequent transfer destination for some former Ohio State Buckeyes including [autotag]Marcus Hooker[/autotag], who is the starting safety for the Penguins this season. Hooker transferred to Youngstown State last spring along with former walk-on receiver, [autotag]Blaize Exline[/autotag].

Another fun connection that Ohio State has with Youngstown State is that a former Buckeye great roams their sidelines in former quarterback, [autotag]Mike Tomczak[/autotag].

Now most people remember Tomczak for his cameo in the CBS hit comedy, “Yes, Dear”, but he actually played for Ohio State from 1981 through 1984 and had an extremely long NFL career from 1985 through 2000 and has been coaching for the Penguins since 2017. Tomczak is the current advisor to the head coach and we wish him good luck!

Former Ohio State DB Marcus Hooker announces transfer destination

Marcus Hooker announces transfer decision and will stay in the state of Ohio.

Former Ohio State defensive back, Marcus Hooker entered his name in the transfer portal not too long ago and we now know where he’ll land. Hooker made the announcement on Twitter that he will be traveling upstate a bit and will play at Youngstown State University.

Hooker was part of 14 football players who recently received a degree from The Ohio State University. Hooker received his degree in human development and family sciences. He may now come away with a post-graduate degree with former Buckeye head coach Jim Tressel’s signature.

Marcus Hooker is the brother of former OSU All-American safety Malik Hooker and had played a big role in the 2020 secondary before being replaced by Josh Proctor. The younger Hooker also ran into some legal issues when he pled guilty to an OVI charge in April of 2021.

Hooker will have a fresh start with the Penguins starting this summer as he takes advantage of the NCAA’s extra year of eligibility from COVID.

Good luck to Marcus Hooker… once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.

Another Ohio State defensive back hits the transfer portal

Another defensive back has hit the transfer portal for Ohio State. #GoBucks

Just when you thought the transfer portal shenanigans might be over for the Ohio State football program this offseason, we get word on one more defection out of the secondary.

Safety Marcus Hooker, the brother of former OSU All-American safety Malik Hooker, has entered his name in the transfer portal confirmed an OSU spokesman (subscription may be required) This coming season would have been his fifth in the scarlet and gray.

The younger Hooker came to OSU as a three-star prospect and had a bumpy ride. He began the 2020 season as the starting safety but struggled with injuries and showing enough for the coaching staff to have confidence in him being a consistent player on the back-end of the defense. He then ran into off-the-field issues when he pled guilty to an OVI charge in April of 2021.

Hooker figured to be in a part of the competition to nail down some of the playing time at the safety position, but it now appears as though he will try to carve out a more significant role with another program.

We wish him luck.

The Big Ten’s top five safeties heading into 2021

A surprise #Buckeye makes this list of our top safeties in the Big Ten heading into 2021.

Ohio State football kicks off in less than a month, and we have been rolling through the best of the best of the Big Ten at each position. We have already completed our list of top five quarterbacks, running backs, wide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguards, centers, defensive ends, defensive tackles, inside linebackers, and outside linebackers.

I firmly believe that this Ohio State defense will be improved greatly, and I think that the defensive backs will be a huge part of that. This list may be shocking and a little different than others you’ll see, but hey, I’m always down for some hot takes. Let’s take a look at the top safeties in the Big Ten.

Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker has been reinstated to the team

Ryan Day confirmed that Ohio State got some much-needed depth and talent back in the secondary at Big Ten media days Friday.

Big Ten media days is in full swing, and Friday was Ohio State’s turn to enjoy all the fun. That of course means that Ryan Day stepped to the podium to provide updates on the team and field questions from reporters. There was a lot of questions fired his way, including inquiring minds asking about the status of players.

In fact, Day told media members that safety Marcus Hooker has been reinstated to the team after being suspended because of an OVI charge earlier this year.

“He’s back with the team,” Ryan Day said Friday told the media. “He’s going through a tough time, but he’s learned a lot from it and paid his dues and went through a bunch of different programs and so, we’re supporting Marcus and he’s back on the team.”

Hooker was suspended indefinitely after being charged with an OVI on March 13. According to police reports, he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car in McDonald’s. It was the second off-the-field incident in his short time at Ohio State. He was also suspended for the 2018 season opener due to a charge of driving under the influence in Pennsylvania.

Getting Hooker back is a positive on-the-field development for the Buckeyes. He is one of the most experienced defensive backs and will be counted on to help improve a unit that was one of the worst statistically in all of the FBS. Hopefully, he’s turned things around, learned some lessons, and can be a major contributor to the team in 2021.

Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker suspended from football team after OVI charge

Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker has reportedly been suspended from the team because of an OVI charge over the weekend.

Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker has been suspended from the football team according to news that was first broken by local Columbus news CBS affiliate WBNS 10TV.

According to court records, Hooker was cited for Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) at Delasmut Avenue and West 5th Avenue near Grandview at 1:40 a.m. He is set to be arraigned at Franklin County Municipal Court on Friday. Records also show that Hooker refused a blood-alcohol test at the scene.

A team spokesman said there is no timetable for the suspension. However, Ohio State is likely to come down harder on Hooker since this is the second time he’s run into a similar infraction. He was suspended in 2018 for the season opener because of a DUI.

We’ll have more on this news as it becomes available.
