Peg a sliver of a lean toward to the host Cardinals here. Up until scoring a slew of runs at Oakland Wednesday and Thursday, New York had been slumping, logging a minuscule .602 OPS over 14 games prior.

Montgomery was effective (5 scoreless innings) in a start against his old mates last Aug. 6 and he fronts a relief corps with perhaps more bullets in the chamber. That St. Louis bullpen also figures as one to get better than what shows in surface ERA (4.31). The opposite holds true for a Yankee ‘pen with favorable rates around the margins.

ST. LOUIS (-104) is worth some partial-unit action.

Over/Under

The Yankees have scored 6-plus runs in 3 of their last 4 games. The Cards have filed 7-plus in 3 of the their last 6.

Peg both starters as being a bit HR-fortunate so far this season. They allow enough hard contact that favorable home runs-to-fly ball ratios can mask some surface ERA bloat. Cole has also managed an 81.5% left-on-base rate, which when higher than 70% can signal some luck on the timing of batted balls.

Both clubs (the Yanks more so) have played schedules dialed to a higher-than-average degree of difficulty for batters (facing tougher pitching). No interest in either side here. The Yankees are on a bit of a roll. The offensive explosion in Oakland (21 runs over Wednesday-Thursday) was impressive, but New York had been slumping, logging a minuscule .602 OPS over 14 games prior.

Flaherty’s layoff and the Cards’ overall level of play of late leave a lot to be desired if looking to bet the home 9. And St. Louis is just 2-8 over its last 10 games at home.

AVOID.

Run line/Against the spread

Based on price more than prediction, the New York -1.5 play is the most interesting side. Weather conditions, the pitching and, likely, the doubleheader scenario play into a higher-scoring, more-probably loose game in this opener. The Yanks at +160 on the run line would be some nice leverage. If the tag got to +155, a New York -1.5 wager would be worth some partial-unit action. Otherwise, PASS.

The Cards have had a tendency to play well against better teams, but they should not be even money against the Yankees. New York pulverized the Oakland Athletics 21-4 over its last 2 games, and St. Louis looked like a Little League team Thursday outside of a couple of web gems from 3B Tommy Edman. The Cards are just 15-24 at home and 11-15 in interleague play. This really should be Yankees -150.

Take the YANKEES (-110).

Run line/Against the spread

Severino has struggled much of the year, but he really took it to a good Texas Rangers team in his last start. Walks are a concern, but his stuff will play in the big ballpark at Busch. Five of the last 6 Yankees victories were by multiple runs, and that’s the feel for Friday.
