How are scouts seeing the NBA future of stashed Boston Celtics guards Yam Madar and Yuhan Begarin?

Do they have a future in the NBA?

The Boston Celtics are among the more liberal users of the so-called “draft-and-stash” strategy to developing players overseas, and currently have a pair of guard prospects stashed overseas in European leagues.

Such players have had mixed results in working out as NBA prospects in the past, though occasionally teams find a diamond in the rough through stashing prospects they do not have the roster or cap space to develop in their own team. Boston’s stashed guards — Yam Madar and Juhann Begarin — were recently evaluated by a European scout who spoke with Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith about how likely they were to make it at the next level.

Let’s take a look at some of Smith’s reporting on the scout’s analysis.

Yam Madar highlights: 13 points, 4 assists, 3 steals on 5-of-6 shooting vs. Buducnost Voli

Get up to speed with what the stashed Celtics point guard has been doing overseas with Partizan.

Fans of the Boston Celtics have rightfully had their attention occupied by the success of their favorite team and the jersey retirement ceremony of one of the greatest big men to play for the storied franchise in Kevin Garnett.

But they might be happy to know that one of their stashed players — Israeli floor general Yam Madar — has been honing his craft overseas playing for Serbian basketball club Partizan NIS of Belgrade. The Beit Dagan native had a solid game while playing in a smaller role than he had playing in his native Israel in an 80 – 72 win over Montegran club Buducnost Voli.

The former No. 47 pick for the Celtics put up 13 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals in 22 minutes of floor time while shooting a sizzling 5-of-6 from the field, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Check out how Madar has been playing in this highlight clip from that game put together by YouTuber Tomasz Kordylewski.

WATCH: Stashed Celtics guard Yam Madar’s best play overseas with Partizan NIS in 2021-22 so far

Could the Israeli floor general be a sneaky candidate for one of the Celtics’ open roster slots?

The Boston Celtics have two open roster spots — a regular roster slot and a two way one — it may want to fill before the March 1 deadline for playoff eligibility passes us by. And if the Celtics want a player who has some familiarity with their team and system, they could reach out to 2020 NBA draft pick and 2021 Las Vegas Summer League participant Yam Madar.

The two way slot might not be enough to entice Madar to leave Europe where he plays for Partizan NIS, but his ability to scale down his game at a higher level of competition without losing much in the way of efficiency.

And if you have not been keeping up on what the Israeli floor general has been up to overseas, fan YouTuber Tomasz Kordylewski put together a 2021-22 season highlight clip of Madar with Partizan this season.

Check out the clip embedded above to see how Boston’s No. 45 pick in 2020 is showing out abroad.

Who are the best overseas players the Boston Celtics could sign to their roster?

These are some of the better overseas options the Celtics could consider.

The Boston Celtics have signed two players to get their roster to the league-required 14-man minimum, but both are on 10-day contracts and may not stick. Add in that the Celtics have an additional regular and also a two way roster slot open, and it is quite likely Boston will be looking to add another player if not several.

There are plenty of potential targets for the Celtics to sign who still need to be bought out before the March 1 deadline, but if Boston isn’t up to wait that process out, they can look to domestically available players who aren’t on a contract, or snap up one of the better players overseas.

Overseas players may of course need to get permission (or be bought out) if under contract with their current club, but there are several the Celtics ought to be considering should they be able to find their way to the NBA — let’s take a look at seven such players.

WATCH: Soaring Alley-oop from stashed Celtics guard Yam Madar to former Golden State Warrior Alain Smailagic

The stashed Celtics floor general connected with Warrior alumnus Alain Smailagic on this sexy play for Partizan Belgrade.

While the Boston Celtics might not be doing so great right now, their stashed Israeli floor general Yam Madar has been busy honing his craft overseas in Europe with Partizan Belgrade of the ABA, where he has been playing fewer minutes as he works his way into a higher level of competition.

Averaging 7.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting a sizzling 51.4% from the field and 48% from beyond the arc, he’s even had some especially flashy plays with NBA-level talents. One such play is a recent alley-oop to former Golden State Warriors big man and current teammate Alain Smailagic in a 93 – 90 loss to Serbia’s Košarkaški Klub Mega Basket on Jan. 20.

Watch the video embedded below to check out the flashy play from Madar to Smailagic for a quick check-in with Boston’s No. 47 pick of the 2020 NBA draft.

Celtics president Brad Stevens spotted in Europe checking up on Yam Madar

The Israeli point guard is stashed in the European ABA league with Partizan NIS.

Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations recently made a trip to Europe to check in on stashed Israeli point guard Yam Madar, according to a recent article by EuroHoops.

The Celtics president and a number of other NBA executives reportedly made the trip to see Madar play for his team in the ABA League — Partizan NIS — as they faced Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana in that league’s Round 11 Derby. Madar had made a string effort to sign on with Boston with his participation in this year’s Celtics summer league squad, but the unexpected signing of Dennis Schroder put those hopes to bed.

So far in 10 ABA League games played, the Beit Dagan native averages 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, and 7.4 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per contest when Partizan NIS plays EuroCup games.

As a young player, he has a chance to play for Partizan, under Zeljko Obradovic, which is a really big thing for him. I believe he’s using it the best way,” Stevens told Mozzart Sport.
