2021 Power Rankings Roundup, Week 8: Where Chargers stand after bye week

Your one-stop Week 8 power rankings for the Chargers.

Even though the Chargers did not play this past weekend, that doesn’t mean it won’t reflect on national power rankings.

After Week 7, let’s see what the nation thinks of the Bolts.

USA Today: 10 (Last Week: 9)

“Last time they hosted Patriots in Los Angeles, New England won 45-0. We’ll assume a better outcome this Sunday at SoFi.”

Touchdown Wire: 10 (Last Week: 10)

“Bye week.”

NFL: 9 (Last Week: 8)

“OK, so Justin Herbert stunk up the joint two Sundays ago in Baltimore, as did the rest of his Chargers teammates in a game to forget. The question becomes this: Was it simply a bad week — or do teams now have a playbook on how to stop the Bolts? The Chargers’ offense could use improvement in early-down situations. More work is needed on the defensive side, which is surprising, considering Brandon Staley’s pedigree upon taking this head-coaching job. Los Angeles ranked 19th in defensive DVOA heading into Monday Night Football and is one of the worst teams in football against the run. The Chargers are good — potentially great — but they remain under construction.”

CBS Sports: 10 (Last Week: 8)

“The Chargers had two weeks to stew over their poor showing against the Ravens. Now they get the Patriots at home, which will be fun seeing Justin Herbert against Bill Belichick.”

Yahoo Sports: 10 (Last Week: 9)

“The Chiefs’ loss was a victory for the Chargers over their bye week. The upcoming schedule isn’t too tough either (vs. Patriots, at Eagles, vs. Vikings, vs. Steelers, at Broncos), so they have a chance to solidify their place in the division along with the Raiders.”

Sports Illustrated: 9

“The loss to the Ravens lingers, but I wouldn’t bet against Brandon Staley after a week of self scouting. This is especially true given the Chargers’ soft schedule from here on out, which features just two teams—the Raiders and the Bengals—with winning records. Even if you toss the Chiefs into the mix, this isn’t anything to flinch at.”

Who are the experts taking in Chargers vs. Washington?

How NFL experts around the league are viewing the matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Washington Football Team.

The Los Angeles Chargers are considered 1.5-point underdogs to the Washington Football Team in Week 1 of the 2021 season. The over/under is set to 44.5 points, per Tipico Sportsbook.

That means oddsmakers are taking bets on whether the two teams will combine to score more than or fewer than 44.5 points.

Our unofficial score prediction for the game is a 27-21 win for the Bolts, with a combined total of 48 points. So if we were putting money behind our prediction, we’d bet the over.

Report: Big Ten has ‘little to no interest’ in expanding conference

The Big Ten is reportedly expressing “little to no interest” in conference expansion

The Big Ten isn’t looking to expand at this time, according to Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports.

Conference expansion and realignment has been a huge topic in the past week, with Texas and Oklahoma expected to leave the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference. This move has sparked a bunch of chatter on what other moves could occur — including numerous teams expressing interest in the joining the Big Ten. However, that is reportedly something the league isn’t interested in at this time.

Wetzel tweeted on Monday night that he’s hearing “little to no interest in expansion” from his Big Ten sources. He added that the league is in talks with the Pac 12 on a potential non-conference rotating schedule agreement.

Here’s the full tweet from Wetzel below:

Wetzel also debunked the wild rumor that Ohio State and Michigan were in “serious contact” with the SEC on joining the conference. That was something I personally was always skeptical about — but it was at least an interesting rumor.

We will have to wait and see if things change from what Wetzel is hearing, and if the league does in fact look to add a few teams. I wouldn’t be shocked either way at this point.

Five Big 12 players grace Yahoo Sports’ rankings of impactful transfers

The Big 12 as a whole is inheriting an abundance of talent via the transfer portal.

The Big 12 as a whole is inheriting an abundance of talent throughout the conference via the transfer portal.

With the rule of having to sit out after transferring now abolished, along with the extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19, teams throughout the nation are seeking transfers that can come in and make an immediate impact for their program.

Texas, under a new coaching staff, is one of those schools that has relied heavily on the portal to address team needs. The Longhorns have taken in a total of seven transfers, and are in the mix for another in King Mwikuta, who announced a little over a week ago that he plans to transfer from Alabama.

The Longhorns are not the only school in the Big 12 to take advantage of the portal, as Oklahoma took in a quarter of Tennessee’s roster, and Texas Tech more than made up for the loss of quarterback Alan Bowman by getting Oregon transfer Tyler Shough. Yahoo Sports ranked 21 key instant impact transfers, which is full of players that they view have the best chance of coming in and immediately being difference makers for their new team.

Five out of the 21 players found a new home at a Big 12 school, and two of them are ranked in the top five. Let’s take a look at the transfers that made the list and where they rank.

Report: College Football Playoffs likely to expand to 12 teams

According to a report from Yahoo Sports Pete Thamel, the CFP committee is looking into the logistics of expanding to 12 teams.

[mm-video type=video id=01f79wef2wcxpep5ysjr playlist_id=none player_id=01f1jz1vgtfhzk6ner image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f79wef2wcxpep5ysjr/01f79wef2wcxpep5ysjr-f3c3d988e81053c63ec29fa14d25c0f8.jpg]

Ever since the BCS system was abolished and replaced with a four-team playoff to decide the national champion starting in 2014, there has been much speculation about the playoff expanding. It’s been deemed an inevitability by many, and expansion gained traction this past offseason with nonconference games being largely eliminated due to COVID-19.

Now, according to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, it seems expansion is imminent. But it likely will not be to eight teams as many predicted. Rather, it seems the College Football Playoff is likely to expand to 12 teams.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

A working group of four within the CFP committee have been tasked for two years with looking into the logistics of expansion, and that group will report its findings to the committee on July 17 and 18 in Chicago. According to Thamel, expanding the playoff to 12 teams has broad support (or at the very least, openness) from university officials, athletic directors and media executives.

One reason these stakeholders seem to prefer the idea of a 12-team playoff to an eight-team one is concerns about implementing an automatic bid system. As things currently stand, the four CFP teams are chosen on an at-large basis. Any expansion would likely result in conference champions receiving automatic bids, and there are worries that there would be too few at-large spots using an eight-team model.

There is some precedent for using a larger playoff in college football, as the FCS has decided its national champion using a 16-team playoff since 1986. However, expanding to 16 teams doesn’t seem to be on the table (at least for now).

One notable aspect of an expanded playoff model (whether it is 12 teams or even 10 teams, which Thamel suggests as a possibility for a compromise decision) is that it would provide an automatic bid to the best Group of Five team. Under the current system, the best team among those leagues automatically qualifies for a New Year’s Six Bowl, but none have made the CFP as an at-large.

Under a 12-team system, the top four seeds would likely receive a bye, with seeds Nos. 5-12 facing off at the home stadium of the higher seed. The rest of the bowl system would likely remain unchanged, with bowls filling in from there. Although Thamel doesn’t mention it, it’s possible these playoff games could be incorporated into the bowl structure as was done with the CFP semifinals.

One thing certain is this change isn’t coming in the near future. According to Thamel, there will be no change in format until at least after the 2021 and 2022 seasons. But we could have more clarity as discussions progress over the next several weeks.

An expanded College Football Playoff would provide more teams in non-premier leagues with access and guarantee that every Power Five league has at least one representative in the playoff. Further, it would increase the revenue generated for the sport, which understandably has the support of athletic directors and television executives.

Playoff expansion feels inevitable at this point. The only question remaining is when and by how much?

Breaking: Griffith has change of heart, will stay at Notre Dame

A veteran in the Notre Dame program, defensive back Houston Griffith, has changed his mind and won’t transfer after all.

It was big surprise when defensive back Houston Griffith put his name into the transfer portal and was looking to finish his career somewhere other than South Bend. According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Griffith had a change of heart and will finish his career with Notre Dame.

Recruiting isn’t just about the high school athletes, often coaching staffs have to convince players to stay in the programs when the NFL or other opportunities arise. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side and it seems like Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman did a great job at rerecruiting Griffith.

The transfer portal doesn’t always yield great results for every prospect who enters. By getting Griffith to return to South Bend, it makes Freeman’s job that much easier. He will have a player who has plenty of experience and should be able to quickly grasp the new defensive scheme. Griffith was surely welcomed back with open arms.
