Another LSU offensive lineman departs for the transfer portal

Xavier Hill becomes the third LSU offensive lineman to enter the transfer portal.

LSU’s starting offensive line should look essentially the same in 2023, barring a major surprise. But the Tigers’ depth up front is sure to look a bit different after losing yet another depth player in [autotag]Xavier Hill[/autotag], who entered the transfer portal on Wednesday.

The sophomore and former three-star recruit from Olive Branch, Mississippi, played in seven games during his three seasons with the Tigers. He started twice at left tackle in 2021, but he lost that job to [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] this offseason and only appeared in three games this fall with no starts.

Seeing as Campbell won’t be eligible for the draft for two more seasons, Hill’s decision to move elsewhere made sense.

Hill becomes the third Tigers’ offensive lineman to enter the portal since the conclusion of the regular season, joining Marcus Dumervil and Cameron Wire. He’ll have several years of eligibility at his next stop.

Seven LSU offensive linemen sign NIL deals with Hooters

That’s certainly one way to do NIL.

The restaurant chain Hooters is dipping its toe in the NIL game, as it has reportedly signed a number of college football players to name, image and likeness deals.

And they’re all offensive linemen.

Among the list of players to sign, seven of them play for the Tigers: [autotag]Kimo Makane’ole[/autotag], [autotag]Lanson Smith[/autotag], [autotag]Fitzgerald West Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Miles Frazier[/autotag], [autotag]Marcus Dumervil[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Hill[/autotag] and [autotag]Kardell Thomas[/autotag]. Two of them — Frazier and Dumervil — are in the mix for starting jobs as fall camp winds down.

Frazier is a transfer from Florida International expected to win one of the starting guard jobs, while Dumervil is a sophomore who was a rotational piece last season but could expand his role this fall. Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that he has missed part of fall camp with an ankle injury.

This may not be the most conventional NIL deal, but the bag is the bag, and LSU’s linemen won’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 71 Xavier Hill

Xavier Hill is one of several players who will compete for a starting job at one of the guard spots.

Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] this season.

We continue our look at this team’s offensive linemen with a player who has seen limited action in his first two seasons with the team but could be asked to provide some major depth up front this fall. [autotag]Xavier Hill[/autotag], a Mississippi native, looks to be one of the beneficiaries of the Tigers’ offensive line turnover this offseason.

LSU injury notes: A new name at left tackle, Jay Ward to return

A couple of injury notes for the LSU Tigers, more movement at left tackle?

[mm-video type=video id=01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv playlist_id=01eqbz5s7cf4w69e0n player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv/01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv-4a12c89865ca4e45b4b5ec1142780e62.jpg]

The LSU Tigers have been hit hard by the injury bug to start out the year. Even before Fall camp was underway the team lost senior quarterback Myles Brennan. The latest injury to hit the team was senior defensive end Andre Anthony. The mental toughness and their ability to overcome adversity will be tested in the coming weeks.

Coming up will be their first SEC test in Mississippi State. Who will line up at left tackle? On Wednesday, Ed Orgeron stated that he was unsure if Cam Wire would be able to play on Saturday. The team went with Xavier Hill at left tackle against Central Michigan, but now it looks as though another name will be inserted into the starting lineup.

At practice, Anthony Bradford has been running with the first team at left tackle. He could get his first start there as Orgeron and the staff is looking for answers at left tackle. Bradford is a guard by trade, but the 365-pound sophomore will look to man the edge on the left.

On the defensive side of the ball, the team expects to have Jay Ward back in the lineup after missing the last two games. Ward moved over from cornerback to play safety in Daronte Jones’ defense. With a more prolific passing team coming to town, Ward’s return couldn’t come at a better time.

The five most important LSU Tigers against Mississippi State

Which LSU Tigers are the most important for a win on Saturday?

The last time these two teams met, it was a stunner for the ages.

Last September, Mississippi State came into Baton Rouge to open the season and pulled off a massive 44-34 upset over the then No. 6 LSU Tigers.

This season, it’s a little different. LSU started the season out slow with a tough loss at UCLA but has since bounced back with strong wins over a pair of cupcake opponents. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, started the season off 2-0 but lost this past weekend to Memphis after some bewildering officiating. Momentum seems to side with the Tigers heading into this game.

Here are the five most important players for LSU as they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs this Saturday.
