Game Details: LSU set to host Mississippi State on Saturday night

LSU set to host Mississippi State on Saturday night at the PMAC.

The LSU Tigers were able to stop the skid once again as they swept Texas A&M on Tuesday night in College Station.

Will Wade and LSU look to make it two in a row. They haven’t won back-to-back games since beating Tennessee and Florida in early January. They have won just two games since that point, both coming against the Aggies with a pair of three-game losing streaks sandwiched in between.

The team looked much better offensively with Xavier Pinson on the floor for a good amount of the game. They built up a 20-point lead in the first half and hung on for the win. Following the matchup with Mississippi State on Saturday the team hosts Georgia.

Over the final seven games, LSU will play No. 5 Kentucky, Arkansas who is coming off a win over No. 1 Auburn, and Alabama to close out the season on Mar. 5.

Five reasons LSU escaped Starkville with a win on Saturday

Breaking down five reasons the LSU Tigers left Starkville with a win.

The Tigers narrowly escaped Starkville with a 28-25 win over Mississippi State Saturday afternoon and although it wasn’t always pretty, the defense made enough stops early in the game and the offense was able to take advantage of miscues from the Bulldogs over the course of 60 minutes. Here are five reasons why the Tigers came out on top and are 1-0 in SEC play.

1. The LSU defense kept the Bulldogs (mostly) in check

The LSU coaching staff and Tiger fans don’t need to be reminded again how the defense fared last time it played Mike Leach’s offense. After giving up over 600 passing yards in last season’s opener, LSU defensive coordinator Daronte Jones decided to stick with a three man rush and played a lot of dime coverage, using six defensive backs and put an emphasis on stopping explosive plays from Mississippi State. The game plan proved effective, especially in the first half when LSU went to the locker room with a 7-3 lead. Two late touchdowns from Mississippi State might have spoiled an otherwise solid effort from the Tiger defense, but the coaching staff had a plan, stuck with it and it worked.

Saturday Standouts: Which LSU players stood out on Saturday

A look at the players who stood out for LSU on Saturday in the 28-25 victory.

On Saturday afternoon in Starkville, Mississippi, the LSU Tigers came out victorious with the 28-25 victory. The game got close late as the Bulldogs tried to make a late run at a win. The illegal touching on the onside kick attempt sealed their fate.

After a slow start to this game that saw LSU lead 7-3 at the half, the offense really got rolling in the second half. Max Johnson found nine different receivers in this game. His four touchdowns all came on passes of 10+yards.

The defense stepped up in this game, after last year’s embarrassing loss at home. They forced a couple of turnovers and kept everything in front of them for the most part. A missed field goal in the first half by MSU was the difference in a win for LSU and sending the game to overtime.

We look at the five players who stood out for the Bayou Bengals as they improved to 3-1 on the season.

Instant Analysis: Takeaways from the LSU Tigers 28-25 victory over Mississippi State

Five takeaways from the win. Is Kayshon Boutte the west WR in the SEC?

It was a slow start for the LSU offense against Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon, but they were able to get the job done in the end. The defense, on the other hand, started out hot but finished the game slow after giving up a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Even though Will Rogers completed 23 of his 28 passes in the first half, Mississippi State only mustered three points. It was 7-3 LSU at halftime. Kayshon Boutte caught two of Max Johnson’s four touchdown passes on a day where Mississippi State’s secondary could not catch a break.

Here are our five instant takeaways from LSU’s 28-25 win over Mississippi State.

WATCH: Kayshon Boutte makes his second house call of the game

Kayshon Boutte catches another one from Max Johnson.

As he did to open the first half, Max Johnson found his favorite weapon in Kayshon Boutte. The offense hadn’t shown any explosion in the first half following their opening drive that resulted in a touchdown pass to No. 1. The offense went four drives averaging just 19 yards per drive.

As they opened the second half, the offense looked to strike once again. They started it off with a run by Tyrion Davis-Price for 11 yards. That put him at seven carries for 43 yards in the game. On the very next play Johnson found Boutte for a 64-yard catch and run for the touchdown. It looked very reminiscent of his success against the UCLA defense.

Johnson was able to put the ball right on Boutte that allowed the long catch and run to go up 14-3. The Tigers need more of this offense to close out the game with a lot of time left in this one.

WATCH: Max Johnson avoids the rush and finds Kayshon Boutte for the touchdown

LSU strikes quickly with the touchdown pass from Max Johnson to Kayshon Boutte.

The LSU Tigers looked to strike first despite going on defense first to kick off the game. The defense was able to force a turnover when Cordale Flott popped the ball loose for Damone Clark to scoop it up and get into Mississippi State territory. The Tigers looking to start quickly in this matchup on the road.

On the ninth play of the drive facing a third and nine from the Bulldogs 11-yard line, Mississippi State sent the house on a blitz. Max Johnson was able to make the free rusher miss and found a sliding Kayshon Boutte for his FBS-leading seventh touchdown of the season. On his first drive, Johnson was four of five for 35 yards and a touchdown.

The Tigers got the quick start they were looking for. They need to keep applying pressure as the game continues in Starkville, Mississippi.

Staff predictions for the LSU Tigers matchup with Mississippi State

The staff makes their predictions for the game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The opening of SEC play is finally upon us for the LSU Tigers. Thus far the Alabama Crimson Tide is the only team out of the West to get into conference play. All but Tennessee and Vanderbilt have played a conference in the East.

The staff has made their predictions for the LSU Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs for Saturday. Yours truly will kick it off with predictions.

We know the history of the series and we know what happened last year. Throw that all out the window as two different quarterbacks are set to start this one and two new coordinators on the LSU side of things.

One key for me will be the ability to run the football with Ty Davis-Price and Corey Kiner. The latter leads the team in rushing through three games. If they can run the ball and keep it away from the Bulldogs offense, you have to figure that it will benefit LSU.

Defensively the team needs to find a way to disrupt Will Rogers and the passing game. So much of the Air Raid offense is built on rhthym and timing, if BJ Ojulari, Ali Gaye, and Maason Smith can create chaos in the pocket, it bodes well for a defense who will be missing Andre Anthony and Derek Stingley Jr.

Final Prediction: LSU 31, Mississippi State 27

Five reasons why LSU will beat Mississippi State

Breaking down five reasons why the LSU Tigers come out victorious on Saturday.

LSU’s SEC opener is finally here.

The Tigers go on the road up to Starkville, Mississippi to take on Mississippi State, who has had a rocky start to the season. A one-point win over Louisiana Tech was followed up with a 21-point win over a solid NC State team. Then, this past week the Bulldogs lost 31-29 at Memphis.

Mississippi State has been a difficult team to figure out this season. Now, with games against Auburn, Kentucky, and Florida approaching, the Tigers can’t afford to take their eyes off of this game if they want to make a push at the SEC West title.

Here are five reasons why LSU beats Mississippi State on Saturday.

One major storyline to observe against Mississippi State

Plenty of storylines for the game on Saturday, one stands out above the rest.

There are plenty of notable storylines to observe in the game between the LSU Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The road team is looking to return the favor to an embarrassment from a season ago. The Bulldogs came into Death Valley and racked up 44 points and over 600 yards of offense. Can Ed Orgeron and company return the favor?

The major storyline to observe is how can the LSU football team build on the last two victories at home as they try for the first road win of the season. They opened out in Los Angeles but fell to UCLA 38-27. Following that loss, the team outscored their opposition at Tiger Stadium 83-28. With a bevy of top opponents on the schedule, can the team get a much-needed win on Saturday?

LSU’s resounding 49-21 win over a tricky Central Michigan team was a good step forward. But with games against Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss and Alabama on the near horizon, a loss to Mississippi State could trigger quite a slide for the Tigers. – Bill Connelly, ESPN

To do so the Tigers will have to do it without two of their better defenders in all likelihood. The team lost Andre Anthony for the season due to a knee injury suffered against Central Michigan. This week in practice top cornerback Derek Stingley Jr re-injured his “camp” injury and is very questionable against Mississippi State.

[listicle id=25745]

The does get Jay Ward back and he will likely slide over to cornerback along with Dwight McGlothern who just returned to the team last week. They will be tested along with Eli Rick in slowing down the SEC’s top passing attack. To neutralize the offense the nation’s top pass-rushing unit will need to continue their dominance against an offensive line that allows two sacks per game.

[listicle id=25680]

BJ Ojulari and the defense will have a challenge in getting to Will Rogers but this unit has shown to be an attacking unit in three games.
