Saints invite a couple of undrafted locals to try out at rookie minicamp

A couple of former undrafted locals will be trying out at New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp in a few weeks:

You can’t say the New Orleans Saints are overlooking NFL talent in their  own backyard. A couple of undrafted players have been invited to participate in the Saints’ upcoming rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill: Tulane offensive lineman Cameron Wire and Mississippi State safety Shawn Preston.

Rookie minicamp has been scheduled for May 10-12. Wire’s Tulane teammate Sincere Haynesworth, the Green Wave’s longtime starting center, will be in the mix after signing an undrafted free agent contract with the Saints on Saturday. Preston is taking the same path to the NFL that Saints All-Pro special teams ace J.T. Gray did coming out of Mississippi State.

Wire mostly played left tackle in college (1,537 snaps), having spent the first four years of his career at LSU before transferring to Tulane in 2023. He’s also taken snaps at right tackle (139), right guard (133), and left guard (11), per Pro Football Focus charting. He’s from Gonzales, La.

As for Preston: he was a regular face in the Bulldogs’ defense over the last six years, lining up most often at free safety or in the box with occasional looks in the slot. The Vacherie, La. native also played special teams at Mississippi State and a strong performance in kicking drills could go a long way to help his case.

While this minicamp is mostly aimed at first-year players, NFL teams often invite veteran free agents to try out as well, and after the weekend they’ll typically sign some players who caught their eye.

LSU starting left tackle Will Campbell hospitalized, out for game against Tennessee

It’s unclear at this time exactly why Campbell was hospitalized.

LSU’s offensive line took a major hit ahead of a crucial contest against No. 8 Tennessee on Saturday morning.

Starting left tackle [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] was hospitalized Friday night, for reasons that remain unclear. What is clear is that the true freshman will miss the contest against the Volunteers, according to multiple reports.

Campbell posted a picture on his Instagram story that showed him in a hospital bed with the caption, “Appreciate all the prayers I’ll be back.”

With Campbell out, [autotag]Cam Wire[/autotag] could move into the left tackle spot against UT. Wire started much of last year but has been a rotational player so far this season.

The offensive line was by far the team’s biggest question entering the season. Four of five starters from a year ago left, resulting in some up-and-down play. But Campbell and fellow true freshman [autotag]Emery Jones[/autotag], now the starting right tackle, have helped immensely and are developing nicely in their first seasons.

Tennessee’s defensive front isn’t exactly its strength, but Campbell’s absence could help give the Volunteers an edge.

Jontre Kirklin, Jack Bech lead list of key players in the Texas Bowl

Who are key players for LSU in the bowl game? We have a few nominees

The Texas Bowl between the LSU Tigers and Kansas State Wildcats is less than a week away. At this point, it is unclear who exactly will be available for either team given opt-outs, injuries, and the dreaded COVID-19. Despite all of that interim head coach Brad Davis is looking forward to the opportunity of leading his team out onto the field at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

We are still awaiting any confirmation on whether or not Garrett Nussmeier will be able to start this game and maintain his redshirt status. If the waiver is denied there are a couple of contingencies on the table for Davis and the Tigers.

Will it be one of the walk-on quarterbacks in Matt O’Dowd or Savion Faulk? Will it be a wildcat quarterback in Jontre Kirklin? The veteran wide receiver hasn’t played quarterback since high school but he might be the best option for the team given who is available.

As we look towards the bowl game, we are highlighting five players who are keys to the game.

Final word on LSU-ULM: Tigers injury update

A look at the injury report for LSU

One final look at the LSU Tigers ahead of their primetime game against the ULM Warhawks.

The good news for LSU is that Ed Ingram and Sage Ryan return to the field for the team. Sage Ryan allows Dwight McGlothern and Cordale Flott to man the outside cornerback spots. Ryan will handle all of the nickelback role. Ingram returns to the offensive line at guard. That will help them protect their lone scholarship quarterback.

The offense will be without a handful of impactful players. Cam Wire went down with an injury against Arkansas last week and is done for the year. The team will also be without three of their five running backs. Against ULM the team should be just fine with just Ty Davis-Price and Corey Kiner. Next week they will likely need more than just two.

  • Cam Wire, Left Tackle (done for the season)
  • Josh Williams, Running Back (out)
  • Tre Bradford, Running Back (out)
  • Armoni Goodwin, Running Back (out)

LSU starting left tackle Cam Wire likely done for the year

Head coach Ed Orgeron gave an update on left tackle Cam Wire.

The hits just keep on coming for the LSU Tigers and their offensive line. After playing in the game against Arkansas without starting guard Ed Ingram and Chasen Hines, they now have another injury to the starting five.

This season left tackle Cam Wire has been in and out of the lineup with various injuries. On Monday when speaking to the local media, head coach Ed Orgeron was asked about Cam Wire’s status.

“I don’t think he is going to play the rest of the season”, Orgeron said. “It doesn’t look like it.”

Wire left the game against Arkansas and was replaced by freshman Garrett Dellenger. He will likely be the starter moving forward unless the team wants to use Marcus Dumervil. Dumervil was used primarily as an inline tight end in jumbo packages to help the run game.

It remains to be seen if either Ingram and/or Hines will be back in the lineup against UL Monroe. Given the level of competition, there is no sense in rushing either back before the season finale.

LSU loses another player in Anthony Bradford

LSU is down yet another player for the season.

At this point, it feels like the list of players healthy is shorter than the injured list. On Monday, head coach Ed Orgeron announced that Anthony Bradford is unavailable for the rest of the season.

Bradford has played most of the season at left tackle filling in for Cam Wire. In six games he played a total of 212 snaps at left tackle, 45 at right guard, and two at right tackle. The sophomore appeared in six games this season, seven games in 2020, and three in 2019.

The 6’5″ 365-pound offensive lineman will look to work his way back to the field next season. Cam Wire is expected to be back against Alabama to resume his role as the left tackle for the LSU Tigers. It is just another massive hit on the injury front, as LSU has lost six starters on defense and one more on offense with Kayshon Boutte.

LSU injury notes: A new name at left tackle, Jay Ward to return

A couple of injury notes for the LSU Tigers, more movement at left tackle?

[mm-video type=video id=01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv playlist_id=01eqbz5s7cf4w69e0n player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv/01fga5kdrnm93w5bg1bv-4a12c89865ca4e45b4b5ec1142780e62.jpg]

The LSU Tigers have been hit hard by the injury bug to start out the year. Even before Fall camp was underway the team lost senior quarterback Myles Brennan. The latest injury to hit the team was senior defensive end Andre Anthony. The mental toughness and their ability to overcome adversity will be tested in the coming weeks.

Coming up will be their first SEC test in Mississippi State. Who will line up at left tackle? On Wednesday, Ed Orgeron stated that he was unsure if Cam Wire would be able to play on Saturday. The team went with Xavier Hill at left tackle against Central Michigan, but now it looks as though another name will be inserted into the starting lineup.

At practice, Anthony Bradford has been running with the first team at left tackle. He could get his first start there as Orgeron and the staff is looking for answers at left tackle. Bradford is a guard by trade, but the 365-pound sophomore will look to man the edge on the left.

On the defensive side of the ball, the team expects to have Jay Ward back in the lineup after missing the last two games. Ward moved over from cornerback to play safety in Daronte Jones’ defense. With a more prolific passing team coming to town, Ward’s return couldn’t come at a better time.

LSU vs Central Michigan Injuries: Ali Gaye and Jay Ward out Saturday

The LSU Tigers could be without a total of four starters for the game against Central Michigan.

For the second straight week the LSU Tigers defense will be without two key starters. Ali Gaye and Jay Ward are out for the game according to head coach Ed Orgeron. Gaye and Ward are both listed as having “undisclosed” injuries.

It is likely that Gaye would play in this game if it were an SEC game, no reason to rush him or Ward back against Central Michigan, a team that the Tigers shouldn’t struggle with. We will put an emphasis on shouldn’t.

The LSU defense has plenty of depth at defensive end/edge rusher with BJ Ojulari and Andre Anthony. Both players recorded sacks against McNeese last Saturday.

[listicle id=24465]

As for the safety spot, expect another heavy dose of Jordan Toles and Cam Lewis. “I think Cam Lewis has done a good job and so has Jordan Toles.” Orgeron continued, “both of those guys got to play and do a good job, they’ve had a good week of practice. They’re gonna be challenged but I think they’re up for the challenge.”

The team will once again be without starting left tackle Cam Wire and right tackle Austin Deculus is questionable for Saturday. Offensive guard Chasen Hines is probable after missing the McNeese game. Charles Turner will likely be back at right tackle against Central Michigan, while Xavier Hill mans the left tackle spot.

LSU vs McNeese: Which Tigers will likely miss Saturday’s home opener

The injury report and which LSU Tigers are likely to miss the home opener on Saturday.

One of the worst parts of the loss to UCLA last Saturday was not just the game itself. The LSU Tigers lost several key players due to injury. The team will be without both starting tackles on the offensive line. On defense, they lose one of their key defenders for the upcoming game.

If there is a silver lining to this story, it is that it comes against an FCS opponent rather than in the thick of conference play. Who is out for Saturday’s game against the Cowboys? We break down the injury report and players are likely to miss due to non-football situations.

Injuries: Who is on the injury report

(Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Quarterback, Myles Brennan: Out indefinitely (arm)

Offensive Tackle, Austin Deculus: Out Saturday (shoulder)

Defensive End, Ali Gaye: Out Saturday (undisclosed)

Running Back, Armoni Goodwin: Questionable Saturday (undisclosed)

Defensive Tackle. Glen Logan: Out indefinitely (foot)

Wide Receiver, Malik Nabors: Questionable Saturday (shoulder)

Safety, Jay Ward: Doubtful Saturday (undisclosed)

Offensive Tackle, Cam Wire: Out Saturday (undisclosed)

The LSU Tigers will also be without three players, two on offense due to academic issues. John Emery Jr is the only player that is still listed as questionable for Saturday’s home opener.

LSU need an added emphasis on the offensive line and the run game

During his weekly press conference, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron discussed the offensive line and the running game.

If there were two huge storylines from the UCLA-LSU game on Saturday, it was in the trenches on both sides of the ball and the running game. The Tigers got no push upfront and it made everything on the offensive side of the ball that much more difficult. Head coach Ed Orgeron addressed these issues in his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Orgeron opened up the press conference discussing the players that will be out for this upcoming game.

Being without the starting left and right tackles could be huge for the LSU Tigers. While they will be expected to win this game against McNeese that is troublesome for an offensive line that struggled in the opener.

While they are still intact in the middle of the line, group play is so important with continuity. Wire was rotating with Charles Turner, who also saw time at right tackle when Deculus went down with an injury. Ali Gaye will also be missed but the team has BJ Ojulari and Andre Anthony that can get to the quarterback.

On the topic of the team being predictable, Orgeron admitted they were outschemed by the UCLA staff. “There were a lot of things we could have eliminated as coaches and we didn’t do it.” He has been adamant since the loss on Saturday that he takes the blame for it.

On the run game, Orgeron discussed an emphasis at the beginning of the second half, “we felt like we had to come out and run the football. We found a couple of cracks in their defense. I felt our guys made a couple of adjustments at halftime that worked. Still, it was nowhere near the variety of runs, nowhere near the style of runs in which we need to run at LSU.”

The run game managed to accumulate just 32 yards rushing between Josh Williams and Tyrion Davis-Price. The loss of John Emery Jr before the game hurt them, but the offensive line wasn’t getting any push upfront for the backs to find creases. Orgeron knows that the run game is key for the LSU offense, and they need better than what they showed on Saturday.

No updates have been made available on the availability of Emery. The hope is that Armoni Goodwin will be available for the game Saturday along with Williams behind Davis-Price.
