Xavier vs UConn Game Preview

Why Xavier Will Win

It’s been a rough few weeks for the Musketeers, but they were able to get by UConn as the one win in the last four games.

How?

They were excellent from the field, they held the Huskies to just 38% from the field, and they got fouled over and over and over again.

Even in the losses lately, the team is doing a great job at getting to the free throw line and it’s been strong from the field. No, there aren’t going to be any threes, but the inside scoring presence is strong and …

Why UConn Will Win

Xavier is getting KILLED on the defensive glass.

Seton Hall and UConn were able to get way too many second chances, St. John’s was able to move the ball around for a whole lot of easy shots, and DePaul was able to win the rebounding battle in its tight win.

UConn has been fine defensively lately – the Xavier game was a bit of an outlier – and it just needs to not screw this up. There can’t be the 23 fouls like there were in the first meeting and it’s got to do its part to get to the free throw line, too.

More than anything else in this, though …

What’s Going To Happen

Offensive rebounds. UConn will get them, and Xavier won’t. Considering the Musketeers aren’t going to do anything big from three, that’s going to matter.

The Huskies will overcome a whole lot of misfires from outside to win the battle in the interior and get revenge for that earlier loss.

Xavier vs Seton Hall Game Preview

Why Xavier Will Win

Really, Xavier? DePaul? At home?

The Musketeers came up with a dud against the Blue Demons on Saturday in a 69-65 loss, but if they can get the scoring game going for a big spurt at some point – and if they can be better on the line – that might be enough.

The Pirates don’t move the ball around well and don’t take or more enough threes. They’re more efficient than anything else, and that should fit the Xavier style just fine.

The Musketeers are better at forcing mistakes, better at keeping the fouls to a minimum, and …

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Seton Hall is better on the free throw line.

Xavier just isn’t shooting well enough. Outside of a hot performance against Creighton, it’s been struggling way too much from three, it’s not hitting enough free throws – only making 70% once in the last seven games – and it hit a scoring wall lately.

Getting to 70 points has been a struggle for the Musketeers, getting there just once since mid-January.

Seton Hall leads the Big East in made free throws, it’s better on the boards than Xavier, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Xavier find its groove again?

Being on the road hasn’t mattered much, and it’s got the ability to crank up more of a scoring punch, but it just can’t seem to score lately.

The first one to 70 wins, and neither one is guaranteed to get there.

Xavier vs DePaul Game Preview

Why DePaul Will Win

DePaul might have a whole slew of problems, but it’s terrific at keeping games low scoring and within range.

There are plenty of blocked shots, and it needs to get to the line a whole lot to  come up with wins.

It only got there eight times in the first meeting, but it was able to keep the came close in a 68-67 loss. It also nailed 11 threes, was strong on the boards, and it moved the ball around better than it had all season long, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Xavier Will Win

DePaul played about as well as it could’ve in the first meeting and still lost.

There’s no consistency to the offensive sets, the team is painful lately from the field – it hasn’t hit 40% in any of its last four games – and if the three aren’t falling, forget it.

As long as Xavier is able to go on a few scoring bursts and keep the Blue Demons from going lights out on the outside, everything should be okay.

DePaul is 1-8 this season when it scores fewer than 70 points, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Xavier is 2-12 when it keeps teams under 70 points, and DePaul isn’t Providence or Villanova – the two that came up with wins.

Coming off two tough wins and a whole lot of battles over the last few weeks, the Musketeers aren’t going to make this too tough. Get off to a decent start, don’t give DePaul a slew of transition points, and get out with a business-like home win.

Xavier vs Butler Game Preview

Why Butler Will Win

The Bulldogs were able to hit enough from the field to make the first meeting interesting.

They lost to Xavier 87-72 in early January, but they weren’t able o connect from the outside like they occasionally do. Over the last two weeks the defense has clamped down lately, especially on the outside shooters, and they did enough to slip by Georgetown and rip Creighton.

Xavier crushed Creighton on the outside in a big win a few days ago, but it’s been way off over the last few games before that. However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Xavier Will Win

The Musketeers are far, far better on the boards.

Butler isn’t a big scoring machine and it doesn’t do enough inside and out. More than anything, it doesn’t help itself with rebounds, and Xavier is great at hitting the boards.

There’s no need to do anything crazy here. The Musketeers don’t foul – they won’t put Butler on the line enough – and it should be able to make up for mistakes by being a +7 or so on the boards.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Is the three dropping for Butler?

It’s not really a volume shooting team, and again, it can’t rebound, so it has to take advantage of its opportunities. When Butler make 35% or better from three, it usually wins, but it can’t make up for the problems when it’s way off.

Xavier will get out to a hot start and should be able to stay ahead, but Butler has to take a few chances from the outside. It won’t do enough.

Providence vs Xavier Game Preview

Why Providence Will Win

The offense has stepped it up.

The Friars have been red-hot from the field over the three-game winning streak following the loss to Marquette. The threes were dropping in wins over Georgetown and Butler, the rebounding has been good enough, and overall, team has been able to keep up.

The Friars have to keep the turnovers to a minimum and they have to keep generating easy points. They’ve been able to hit 40% or better from the field in seven of the last nine games and 50% or better in the last three.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Xavier Will Win

Can get the extra pass?

Providence might be shooting well lately, but the defense isn’t forcing mistakes, it’s not generating pressure, and if the Musketeers can keep things moving around they should be just fine inside.

They haven’t been good enough from three over the last several games – they’ve lost the last three times they’ve hit 26% or worse from three – and Providence has been decent at defending from the outside.

Pound it inside to Jack Nunge, use the size, and find the open man.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be tough on the road, and the Friars aren’t going to crank up a ton from three, but they’ll keep their hot shooting going and pull this out on the free throw line.

They’ll get at least six more attempts and should be +5 in made free throws. That will be just enough.

Ohio State basketball vs. Xavier: How to watch and listen to the game Thursday

Ohio State heads to Cincinnati for an in-state battle with the Xavier Musketeers. Here’s how to find the game.

Ohio State finally looked like a top 25 team earlier in the week taking care of Bowling Green in convincing fashion. Now comes the Buckeyes first real test as they head down the road to Cincinnati to face a pretty good Xavier squad in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

Xavier is 2-0 on the season and one of those wins came over a common opponent in Niagara. The Musketeers held on to beat the Purple Eagles by three and the Bucks won by 10 pulling away late in the second half.

Xavier returns almost everyone from a team that started 8-0 last season before falling victim to a COVID outbreak. We should be in for a good one Buckeye fans.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 99-77 loss against Xavier in Cincinnati

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s blowout loss to Xavier in Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night as they were hammered on the road by Xavier 99-77.

Early on the game had the makings of another high-scoring shootout similar to the Sooners’ win over TCU on Sunday. But, this time, Oklahoma was simply unable to keep up as the Musketeers knocked down a staggering 19 three-pointers on their way to the easy home win.

The Sooners were incapable of chasing Xavier off the three-point in this game and didn’t have huge performances from their stars to be able to keep up. This was a pretty ugly game for the team in crimson.

Here are three takeaways from Oklahoma’s blowout loss in Cincinnati:

When, where, how to watch Oklahoma take on Xavier

Everything you need to know ahead of Oklahoma’s trip to Cincinnati to do battle with Xavier out of the Big East.

Oklahoma basketball is off to a 2-0 start after a big time road win against TCU on Sunday down in Fort Worth.

After a couple of days back in Norman, the Sooners now will head east to take on a red hot Xavier team that has opened up their season 6-0.

The Musketeers certainly have the advantage in terms of time to work out the kinks having played triple the number of games Oklahoma has gotten in so far. They are yet to beat a ranked team or a conference foe, but did get an impressive road win against rival Cincinnati on Sunday.

The Sooners meanwhile have put together two good performances highlighted by stellar outings from Brady Manek in the season opener and Austin Reaves in the conference opener. They’ll need at least one them, or even both, to put together another big outing in order to try and get this win over a very solid opponent out of the Big East.

The road to the Final Four is heating up and both Georgetown and Xavier are fighting for a bid into the NCAA tournament. A win today would go a long way towards helping one of these teams. You can watch Xavier vs. Georgetown CBB streams only on CBS All Access.

Xavier is fresh off a win over DePaul and have won five of their last seven games, including a 74-62 win over then-No. 10 Seton Hall. But with just three games remaining, the Musketeers’ time is running out to build up a March Madness resume and make a serious bid. Though Georgetown has had its troubles this season, a win over them would go a long way to finding them in the NCAA tournament.

Georgetown has seen a ton of injuries hurt them to start 2020. Heading into this one guard Mac McClung and center Omer Yurtseven are questionable. If either player can suit up and play meaningful minutes, it’ll greatly help the Hoyas chances.
