Providence vs DePaul Game Preview

Why DePaul Will Win

Can the Blue Demons stay hot?

It was a stunner when the finally started scoring in a 96-92 win over Seton Hall in mid-January, but that was an aberration with a four game losing streak to follow.

But all of a sudden, DePaul popped a ranked Xavier team on the road and followed it up with one of its best performances of 2022 in a win over Georgetown.

What’s it doing right? It’s making its shots.

Duh, basketball teams are better when they shoot well, but DePaul really, really can’t overcome poor shooting. It’s 10-0 when it makes 45% or more of its shots, and it’s 2-10 when it doesn’t.

It made close to half of its shots from the field in the two wins, and that’s without being lights-out from three.

However …

Why Providence Will Win

DePaul couldn’t do anything the first time around against Providence – a 70-53 Friar win back in early January.

How many teams have hit more than 45% from the field on the Providence D? Six, and four of those games were away from Dunkin Donuts.

The Friars are on a strong seven game winning streak because they’re nailing their threes, they’ve been shooting great with a ton of assists and a whole lot of extra passes, and the defense is getting the job done.

Yeah, DePaul is playing well, but it’s just not consistent enough.

What’s Going To Happen

The Providence defense will clamp down enough to pull away in the second half.

13-0 at home, the Friars will get off to a quick start and force DePaul to start hitting from the outside. It has to hit at least 40% from three to make this a battle, and that’s not happening.

Xavier vs DePaul Game Preview

Why DePaul Will Win

DePaul might have a whole slew of problems, but it’s terrific at keeping games low scoring and within range.

There are plenty of blocked shots, and it needs to get to the line a whole lot to  come up with wins.

It only got there eight times in the first meeting, but it was able to keep the came close in a 68-67 loss. It also nailed 11 threes, was strong on the boards, and it moved the ball around better than it had all season long, and …

Why Xavier Will Win

DePaul played about as well as it could’ve in the first meeting and still lost.

There’s no consistency to the offensive sets, the team is painful lately from the field – it hasn’t hit 40% in any of its last four games – and if the three aren’t falling, forget it.

As long as Xavier is able to go on a few scoring bursts and keep the Blue Demons from going lights out on the outside, everything should be okay.

DePaul is 1-8 this season when it scores fewer than 70 points, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Xavier is 2-12 when it keeps teams under 70 points, and DePaul isn’t Providence or Villanova – the two that came up with wins.

Coming off two tough wins and a whole lot of battles over the last few weeks, the Musketeers aren’t going to make this too tough. Get off to a decent start, don’t give DePaul a slew of transition points, and get out with a business-like home win.

UConn vs DePaul Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies are dominating in the interior.

The combination of Adama Sang and Isaiah Whaley are fantastic at coming up with blocks – UConn is second in the nation in blocked shots – the team is a bear on the boards, and they’re great overall at forcing offenses to struggle.

The D has allowed more than 70 points just four times all season, and now it gets a DePaul offense that doesn’t score.

The Blue Demons have lost eight of their last nine games and didn’t hit 48 points in either of their last two games. They don’t have the offense to move the ball around well enough to get easy shots, but …

Why DePaul Will Win

The Blue Demons will hit the boards.

They might not do a whole lot from the outside, the don’t generate enough easy points in transition, but they get a whole lot of rebounds and can hold their own on the offensive glass.

To make this a fight, they have to get to the free throw line over and over and over again like they did in the 96-92 win over Seton Hall, and UConn is more than good for at least 15 fouls to help the cause.

What’s Going To Happen

Can DePaul do anything from the outside?

The three point shooting has gone bye-bye, and there’s no consistency whatsoever to the offense as a whole, but it’s been a bit better at home lately.

UConn will send the Blue Demons to the line a bit too often, but the offense will be too good inside for the upset to be a possibility after a tight first half.

What we learned in Rutgers’ loss to DePaul

Back and forth is an understatement in this one. There were 16 lead changes and 11 ties for the national audience to enjoy. Let’s take a look at keys from the game.

The Rutgers basketball squad represented the Big Ten in the finale of the Gavitt Games on Thursday Night against DePaul. Rutgers suffered their first loss of the season in this back and forth contest – 73-70 was the final.

After Xavier upset No. 19 Ohio State in the game prior, the Big East already took the Games with four victories, but the Scarlet Knights came up flat in their first loss of the year at the Blue Demons.

“They made some big shots down the stretch, and we made some big ones too,” Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell said. “I liked the looks we got. They made some big plays.”

Rutgers had recently received votes in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll. We will have to wit to see how the loss impacted their standings.

Undisciplined play is ultimately what did Rutgers in – they turned the ball over 12 times. “It’s disappointing. we didn’t block out better and we fouled too much in a one-possession game” Pikiell said. “Give them credit, they worked hard and made it tough for us. They were very aggressive. They were averaging 99 points coming into the game. Give them a tip of the hat.”
