Dolphins have decisions to make on defense in free agency

Re-signing Nik Needham should be a priority.

The Miami Dolphins have had a fine week since the Super Bowl has come and gone. The announcement of Zach Thomas into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last week, followed this week by the finality to the Vic Fangio contract signing saga.

Ladies and gentlemen, they officially got him. Again. Officially.

Fangio will be ushered into Hard Rock Stadium on Monday, and his intro will be streamed on the Dolphins website to capture the moment. At this rate, it wouldn’t be shocking if Miami security snuck Fangio in the back entrance almost like that scene in “Goodfellas.”

Now that Fangio is the boss of the defense, as well as consigliere for Mike McDaniel, it’s expected he could attract free agents as well as entice important Dolphins to re-sign with the team.

On the defensive side of the ball, Miami has about a dozen players whose Dolphins’ contracts expired following the close of the 2022 season. A room’s worth of linebackers are all free agents in Andrew Van Ginkel, Duke Riley, Elandon Roberts, Melvin Ingram and Sam Eguavoen. This would be the unit to expect the shopping in the premium aisle of the free agency market.

Fangio is an expert in the linebacker role specifically, so whether it be through free agency or the draft, or even getting the most out of last year’s rookie Channing Tindall, the defensive guru could maximize talent in that area of the field.

As for the front line of interior defensive linemen and edge pass-rushers, Miami has great continuity returning with Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and the hopeful comeback of Emmanuel Ogbah. Re-signed last season, Ogbah was injured nine games into the 2022 season and looks to return in 2023.

Continuity in 2022 was tough for the Miami defensive backfield due to several key injuries which started with the Byron Jones situation, which is a separate story in itself. He didn’t play a snap following surgery on his Achilles last March, and his future in South Florida is up in the air.

Xavien Howard, who was named to the Pro Bowl, didn’t have his best season and was banged up throughout the year, missing two games and was not his vintage self over the course of the season. Though finishing the season strong and helping Miami secure a playoff berth with a Week 18 win against the Jets, Howard looks to build on that momentum heading into 2023.

Safety Brandon Jones was having a solid year prior to getting hurt in the nationally televised Sunday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7. Jones is rehabbing his left ACL injury, and his return is important with his pairing to Jevon Holland. The two safeties are an excellent tandem and a pair of players Fangio could work wonders with.

Back to the Byron Jones injury – it opened a door for rookie Kader Kohou to not only step up but make an impact as one of the league’s top undrafted free agents. It’s Kohou’s emergence that helps in dealing with the potential fallout if the veteran and the team part ways, yet there’s a component to this that is extremely important: re-signing free agent cornerback Nik Needham.

Sharing an undrafted free agent story in his own right, Needham is similar to Kohou in that they were both diamonds-in-the-rough finds for Miami. Many know Needham’s story and path by now, and as many hurdles as the young defensive back has faced getting to being one of the NFL’s top slot corners, 2022 saw another obstacle to tackle.

Needham tore his Achilles in Week 6 against the Vikings, and heading into a free agent year, the injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for him and of course Miami.

Needham was a restricted free agent at this time last season, and the Dolphins inked him to a one-year deal. Although the Achilles injury is the only issue standing in the way of making this a no-brainer re-sign, Needham is known for his work ethic and for proving naysayers wrong.

Not only is he ahead of schedule, but he’s also now represented by a top-tier agency, Athlete’s First, and he’s been busy working at their facilities in California preparing for the 2023 season. The heavy-hitters will no doubt bring options to the table for Needham, as there was interest in him last season and continued interest heading into this free agency period.

The good news is that Miami has told him that he’s, in fact, in their plans heading into the future. While Needham has said he would love to be a Dolphin, of course, this is the main opportunity he’ll have to cash in on a contract that could be a life set up, financially.

If Needham returns to form, which is a solid bet based on his history and current efforts, Miami would be wise to mix him with Fangio, as the versatile defensive back can be used in a variety of ways. He’s a natural boundary corner, but when asked to assume slot duties, he adapted and excelled. He even was called on for some snaps at safety, and his ability to be used in these ways makes for a potential chess piece and even insurance policy for the new defensive coordinator.

With Needham hopefully back, which, at this point, there’s a very solid chance should Miami simply match any competing potential offer, the core group of him, Howard, Holland, Brandon Jones and Kohou, could be a top-tier unit within a unit. Add in young depth pieces like Trill Williams, also returning from injury, and Verone McKinley III, and Miami could have a deep group.

A handful of teams could make the market competitive for the Dolphins, namely the new home of a former coach in the NFC North, as well as a few teams out west. However, with mutual interest, and the fact that Miami can make good on their initial discovery of Needham and bring things full circle with a multi-year deal, it could be excellent motivation for players entering the team similar to his path.

Re-signing Needham should be a top priority heading into the official start of the 2023 season come March.

WATCH: Xavien Howard mic’d up for Pro Bowl flag football

It’s always really cool to see the top players in the league mix it up.

While the NFL made massive changes to their Pro Bowl schedule, they still had some of their top stars playing a football game, even if it was flag football.

The Miami Dolphins had four players represent their franchise in the festivities, including Xavien Howard, who went for the fourth time in his career.

In what feels like a tradition at this point, the Dolphins mic’d up the former Baylor Bear for the flag football game where he shared the field with the league’s elite talent.

Howard has always been considered a man of few words, but just seeing him interact with the other stars is very cool. One of the funniest moments was him trying to corral teammate Bradley Chubb for a team picture where Howard essentially told him he’s not a Bronco anymore.

While it must be nice to get the Pro Bowl recognition, Howard would probably rather be preparing for a Super Bowl.

Grading the Miami Dolphins cornerbacks after their 2022 season

The room was decimated by injuries.

The Miami Dolphins have begun their offseason processes of evaluating their roster and coaching staff, as they look to achieve more in the 2023 season than they did in 2022.

While they’re doing their own assessments, it’s important for us to do the same.

We’ll continue to look through the Dolphins roster and break down the position groups, reviewing how they performed in their first season under head coach Mike McDaniel.

We’ve already hit on the:

Today, we’ll look at the cornerbacks.

WATCH: Xavien Howard records second career postseason interception

His run back was pretty impressive.

In the second quarter of their wild-card matchup, Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard intercepted Josh Allen inside of their own 10-yard line.

Howard ran the ball back to give Miami possession on Buffalo’s side of the field.

The field position was good enough to help the Dolphins set up kicker Jason Sanders for a 48-yard field goal that he nailed to bring the score to 17-6.

Howard hasn’t had the best season of his impressive career, but that play could end up being a big one.

3 Dolphins have been voted into 2023 Pro Bowl Games

It’s mo surprising that there were three, but it’s surprising which three it was.

There’s still plenty of time left in the 2022 regular season, as Week 16 is set to kick off on Thursday, but the NFL has released the rosters for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games.

Three members of the Miami Dolphins are set to be representing their team – wide receiver Tyreek Hill, left tackle Terron Armstead and cornerback Xavien Howard.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had been the leading vote-getter among all players by fans, with Hill finishing just behind him, but it appears the signal-caller isn’t getting in just yet.

Hill, so far, has been a big reason for Tagovailoa’s success, bringing in 109 receptions and for a single-season franchise record 1,529 yards and seven touchdowns. This Sunday, Hill could also set the team record for receptions, as he needs just four more.

Armstead, through injury, has been a consistent force protecting Tagovailoa’s front side.

The selection of Howard is a little confusing, considering he hasn’t played up to his own standard this season. He’s allowed more catches than he typically has, and he isn’t putting up his usual interception numbers.

The Pro Bowl Games will be held on February 5, 2023, at Allegiant Stadium. Players from each conference will compete in various skills competitions and a non-contact flag football game.

News, notes ahead of Dolphins-Chargers Sunday Night Football matchup

A few things to know about Sunday’s matchup.

The Miami Dolphins stay out west following a tough loss last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Miami will go from Santa Clara to Los Angeles and face the Chargers. This game was recently flexed to primetime, and this is the first time Miami has been flexed into Sunday Night Football since the NFL instituted flexible scheduling in 2006.

The Dolphins have won three of their past four games against the Chargers including the past two road games one in Los Angeles in 2017 and the other in San Diego in 2016. Sitting at 8-4, the Tua Tagovailoa-led Dolphins will face a 6-6 Charger team led by Justin Herbert, and Los Angeles will be fighting for their playoff lives.

Miami looks to keep in contention for the AFC East Division crown, as winning out would mean the title is theirs. Also in play could be the number one overall seed should Kansas City slip just one more game.

Before getting ahead, the Dolphins do need to focus on Herbert and the Chargers on Sunday night, as the nation will be watching, and surely hitting the social channels on literally every throw the two will make.

Xavien Howard with scoop and score as Dolphins are destroying Texans

The Dolphins’ defense scores in the dismantling of the Texans

The Houston Texans are well on their way to protecting their position of heading toward the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

They trailed Miami Dolphins, 27-0, and the game was only 20 minutes old.

Kyle Allen, this week’s sacrificial starter at quarterback hit Jordan Akins and the tight end was hit and separated from the football.

Xavien Howard scooped it and ran 18 yards to the end zone for a touchdown in the mismatch.

News, notes ahead of Dolphins-Browns matchup

Things to note prior to Miami’s Week 10 battle.

The Dolphins return to the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium this Sunday on the heels of a successful pair of consecutive road games and their second three-game winning streak of the season.

Miami sits at 6-3, as the Cleveland Browns head to South Florida at 3-5, led by former Miami Dolphins quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

The man Brissett backed up during his tenure, is putting on an MVP-level 2022 campaign. Tua Tagovailoa is 6-0 when starting and completing games this season and 12-2 overall in his last 14 games.

Tagovailoa has been incredible on the road this season, completing 94 of his 130 attempts (72.3%) for 1,263 yards, 12 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 124 passer rating.

Heading into Week 10, the Dolphins are second in the league in yards per play (6.33), with the first being the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs just behind Miami.

News, notes ahead of Dolphins-Bears matchup

Some important things to know for Sunday.

The 5-3 Miami Dolphins head back to the mid-west, traveling to the Windy City to take on the 3-5 Chicago Bears. This game falls days following the NFL trade deadline, in which the Dolphins made a splash with a surf-and-turf combo of entrees.

Now former Denver Bronco Bradley Chubb and San Francisco 49er Jeff Wilson Jr. already have a couple practices under their belt. Chubb, an elite pass-rusher with the third-best rush-win rate in the NFL wasted no time inking an extension in Miami. Thursday morning began with the news of Miami and Chubb agreeing to a five-year, extension that includes $63.2 million guaranteed.

Wilson, who spent his entire career in San Fransisco, along with Mike McDaniel prior to this season, is reunited with his coach. Not only that, he can again call fellow running back Raheem Mostert a teammate, as Wilson will plug-and-play right away in Week 9 with his knowledge of McDaniel’s scheme and playbook.

“I know he, Mike and Raheem were all hugging and having their kumbaya moment together, being back together, but it’s cool,” said general manager and architect Chris Grier.

With the Dolphins essentially performing a running back switcheroo, sending Chase Edmonds out to Denver in the Chubb deal and bringing Wilson in another deal, they’re heavy at outside linebacker now, adding to a talented front seven rotation.

Chubb joins a core group that includes sophomore sensation Jaelan Phillips, Emmanuel Ogbah, Melvin Ingram and Andrew Van Ginkel when focusing on edge rushers. Mixing in this pot of pass rushers are outstanding interior linemen in Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. Raekwon Davis provides defensive tackle depth, as does John Jenkins, while the linebacking group is massively improved with the addition of Chubb.

More importantly than helping the front seven, Chubb and a momentum-fueled Phillips could start to make life easier on the Dolphins’ secondary. While a major improvement occurred during the second half of last week’s victory over the Detroit Lions, the defensive backfield has been riddled with injuries.

Chubb and Phillips are both within the top 10 in best pass-rush win rates in the league, and if Ogbah, Ingram and Van Ginkel heat up as the overall national weather cools, this team is set for a deep playoff run.

Wilson is a “thumper” so to speak, and the perfect type of back to spell Mostert, and he can pick up those tough short-yardage situations that have plagued Miami for quite some time. In 92 rushing attempts with the 49ers this season, Wilson has averaged 5.1 yards per carry, and with Mostert at 4.9 over the course of the last four games, this Dolphins’ rushing attack could be headed for dominant days.

Sunday in Chicago would be a good place to start, with the Bears currently 31st in the league in rushing defense, giving up 156 yards on the ground per game.

A win against the Bears would give the Dolphins multiple three-game win streaks in the same season for the first time since 2016. They could also improve to 6-3 for just the second time since 2001.

The Dolphins lead this all-time series 9-4, winners of the last two contests, and four of the last five since 2002.

Here are more stats, news and notes heading into the Dolphins-Bears Week 9 matchup:

Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey is impressed by Xavien Howard’s play

Howard led an inexperienced group of cornerbacks to a win on Sunday.

One of the benefits of playing on Sunday night is that the rest of the league gets an opportunity to watch the game, so players have a chance to view their peers.

This week, the Miami Dolphins had that privilege, as they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-10 at Hard Rock Stadium. They earned their fourth win of the season due to an impressive defensive effort despite Byron Jones, Keion Crossen, Trill Williams and Kader Kohou all out with injuries in the secondary. And, to make matters worse, safety Brandon Jones left in the third quarter with a knee injury that looked to be pretty serious.

Xavien Howard, the most experienced member of the cornerback room, played through his groin injuries and was on the field for all 75 defensive snaps. His leadership and performance during the night caught the attention of his counterpart from the Baltimore Ravens, Marlon Humphrey.

While Humphrey may have spelled Howard’s name incorrectly, the sentiment still rings true. Miami’s top cornerback is one of the best in the game when he’s healthy.
