2 players recently cut by Broncos work out for Saints

After being cut by the Broncos last week, WR Phillip Dorsett and P Trenton Gill worked out for the Saints on Monday.

One week after being cut by the Denver Broncos, two players worked out for the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

Former Broncos wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and ex-Denver punter Trenton Gill were among a group of players who visited the Saints, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson.

Dorsett, 31, signed with the Broncos’ practice squad after the team set their 53-man roster last summer. Dorsett was elevated to the game-day roster twice in 2023 but did not record any receptions.

Gill, 25, competed with Riley Dixon for Denver’s punter job this summer. Gill showed off his powerful leg during preseason, but coach Sean Payton said the competition wasn’t close as Dixon retained the job.

New Orleans also worked out punter Corliss Waitman. who handled punting duties for the Broncos in 2022.

Denver made 38 roster moves last week to get down to a 53-man roster. So far, nine players cut by the Broncos have landed with NFL teams.

10 players work out for Broncos, including Nigerian DL Kenneth Odumegwu

The Broncos brought in 10 players for workouts on Monday, including Nigerian defensive lineman Kenneth Odumegwu.

The Denver Broncos brought in 10 players for workouts on Monday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis).

One of the most interesting players on the list is Kenneth Odumegwu, a Nigerian defensive lineman who entered the league as a member of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program with the Green Bay Packers in 2023. He grew up playing soccer and later switched to basketball before being recruited to Osi Umenyiora’s football camp. The 23-year-old lineman is yet to appear in a regular season game in the NFL.

Former CFL draft pick Luiji Vilain is also on the list. The 26-year-old linebacker turned down a chance to play in Canada and opted to instead join the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He has dressed for five games (four with the Vikings and one with the Carolina Panthers), totaling four tackles.

10 players worked out for Broncos

  1. DT Kenneth Odumegwu (No College)
  2. LB Chris Garrett (Concordia, St. Paul)
  3. LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams (Rutgers)
  4. LB Donavan Mutin (Houston)

  6. DB Christian Holmes (Oklahoma State)
  7. DB Zech McPhearson (Texas Tech)
  8. DB Chris Wilcox (Bringham Young)
  9. DB Damarion Williams (Houston)
  10. DB A.J. Woods (Pittsburgh)

Denver’s 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad are both full, so if the Broncos add any free agents, the team will have to cut somebody to make room for any potential new arrivals.

Broncos host 3 cornerbacks for tryouts

The Broncos brought in cornerbacks Christian Holmes, Zech McPhearson and Damarion Williams for tryouts on Monday.

Christian Holmes wasn’t the only defensive back who visited the Denver Broncos on Monday.

The Broncos also brought in cornerbacks Zech McPhearson and Damarion Williams for tryouts, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

McPhearson (5-11, 191 pounds) entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Texas Tech with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. He played in 33 games from 2021-2022 and totaled 30 tackles, two pass breakups and one sack. McPhearson then missed the entire 2023 season with a torn Achilles. He is healthy now, but McPhearson did not make Philly’s 53-man roster.

Williams (5-10, 180 pounds) was picked by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Houston. He totaled 24 tackles and two pass breakups in 14 games as a rookie before missing all but one game in 2023 with an ankle injury. Williams was waived by Baltimore last week.

Holmes (6-1, 205 pounds) had his visit reported earlier today. A former seventh-round pick, Holmes has spent time with the Washington Commanders and New York Giants.

Holmes (6-1, 205 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma State with the Washington Commanders in 2022. He dressed for all 17 games as a rookie and started two contests, totaling 12 tackles and two fumble recoveries in his first season.

Last year, Holmes played in 13 games and recorded eight tackles and one pass breakup. He also played 607 snaps on special teams during his two-year stint with the Commanders.

The 26-year-old cornerback had a scary moment last December when he collapsed on the field after a play. Holmes was then carted off the field and quickly ruled out of the game with a concussion.

Holmes was cut by Washington on Aug. 5 and claimed off waivers by the New York Giants, who waived Holmes during final roster cuts on Aug. 25. He’s now getting a look in Denver.

Report: Wisconsin basketball great Sam Dekker tries out for three NBA teams

Report: Former Wisconsin great Sam Dekker tries out for three NBA teams

Former Wisconsin Badgers great Sam Dekker has recently tried for three NBA teams: the Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks.

This news is courtesy of the CapTimes’ Mike Lucas, who recently caught up with Dekker as he looks to make his return to the NBA.

Related: Big Ten basketball teams ranked by returning production entering 2024-25 season

Dekker has spent the last three seasons overseas after spending part of the 2021 season with the Toronto Raptors. He only spent parts of five campaigns in the NBA after being selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NBA draft.

The majority of his career has been split between the VTB United League in Russia (2019-2020), the Turkish Basketball Super League in Turkey (2020-2021, 2021-2022) and the British Basketball League in England (2022-present).

Dekker’s most recent stop has been by far his most successful. The Wisconsin great led the London Lions to the 2023 British Basketball League Cup championship, earning league and finals MVP honors in the process. His season stat line included 20.8 minutes, 18.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals on 53% shooting.

It appears Dekker has finally recaptured the form that helped him lead the Wisconsin Badgers to two Final Four appearances and one trip to the national championship game.

Given the clear interest showed by some of the league’s top contenders, it appears that the 6-foot, 9-inch small forward is well on his way toward taking his refound game back to the best basketball league in the world.

Cowboys still shopping UFL; bring in 3 DEs, 1 RB for workouts

From @ToddBrock24f7: RB John Lovett and DE Wyatt Ray played for Wade Phillips and the San Antonio Brahmas this spring; 2 more DEs also visited The Star Tuesday.

After adding a pair of UFL players last week, the Cowboys are still sifting through the spring league’s rosters for talent that might help them ahead of training camp.

Four more players were at The Star in Frisco on Tuesday, according to Nick Harris of dallascowboys.com.

The first is defensive end Jonathan Garvin, whose pending visit was first reported last Wednesday. Garvin was a seventh-round draft pick of the Packers in 2020 and played 38 games in Green Bay. He was one of the UFL’s top edge rushers this season as a member of the champion Birmingham Stallions.

Defensive end Wyatt Ray was also brought in for a look. Undrafted out of Boston College in 2019, Ray has spent time with eight different NFL clubs and gotten on the field with three of them- the Titans, Bengals, and Broncos. He played this spring for former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips and the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas, tallying 24 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

A third defensive end also worked out with the Cowboys on Tuesday. Derick Roberson went undrafted out of Sam Houston State in 2019 and spent three seasons with the Titans. He appeared in 16 games for Tennessee and then spent 2023 with the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks. He notched 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks for the DC Defenders most recently.

Dallas is also kicking the tires on a running back to possibly add to their backfield committee. John Lovett had a strong 423 rushing yards- finishing fourth in the league- and five touchdowns on the ground- good for second place- this season for the Brahmas. The former Baylor and Penn State product has done two stints on the Panthers practice squad and was in camp with Pittsburgh briefly last August.

(Ed. note: The John Lovett mentioned above is not to be confused with the tight end/fullback of the same name who went to Princeton, won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Chiefs in 2019, and appeared in eight games with Green Bay in 2020.)

According to Harris, the Cowboys currently have 88 players on the roster. They can have a maximum of 90 for training camp, but they do have one roster exemption for International Pathway Program player Denzel Daxon, so they can make three additional signings in all.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been gathering information on where each of the top draft prospects has been working out. Keep in mind there have surely been many more workouts than the ones we’ve listed, but below you can find the known ones via media reports or our own intel for each player.

Report: Cowboys to work out UFL-champion DE with Packers history

From @ToddBrock24f7: Jonathan Garvin played 3 years in Green Bay and was a top DE in the UFL for the Birmingham Stallions on a line that included Taco Charlton.

The Cowboys continue to look to the UFL to add possible depth to the defensive side of the ball, with just over a month until training camp commences in Oxnard.

Dallas will host Birmingham Stallions defensive end Jonathan Garvin for a workout this week, according to multiple reports Wednesday. Stallions head coach Skip Holtz made the revelation during an appearance on the YouTube show The Next Round just days after his team won the inaugural UFL championship.

Garvin, 24, was a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2020 after a college career as a Miami Hurricane. He played 38 games in Green Bay over the next three seasons before being released during training camp last summer. He compiled 32 tackles, 2 defended passes, and 1.5 sacks over his Packers tenure, which included one start.

The 6-foot-4-inch 257-pounder signed with the Stallions in March. Serving on the same D-line as former Cowboy Taco Charlton, Garvin posted 20 tackles and 3.5 sacks over Birmingham’s 9-1 season. He was the UFL’s No.2-ranked edge rusher with a 33.1% pass rush win rate, according to PFF’s Marcus Mosher.

Now he’ll look to latch on with a group that already includes Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, Chauncey Golston, Tyrus Wheat, Viliami Fehoko, Durrell Johnson, and second-round draft pick Marshawn Kneeland.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The odds of claiming a roster spot may be long, but Garvin is following in the footsteps of spring-league veterans KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey, both of whom were signed by the Cowboys in the past two years. Dallas has signed two UFL players already this week- linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. and cornerback Gareon Conley.

So there is a viable pathway for Garvin to the bright lights of the NFL, and the players there know it, according to Holtz.

“Last year, we had 22 players in an NFL camp,” he said Wednesday. “Twenty-two players out of our 50. Now, out of those, like nine made it, but 22 got into a camp. I think that’s what this league is about, giving those guys that second opportunity.”

Jonathan Garvin, your opportunity starts now.

Former Wisconsin forward gets NBA workout with Utah Jazz

Former Wisconsin forward gets NBA workout with Utah Jazz

Former Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl recently worked out with the Utah Jazz, according to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson.

Wahl was one of the several NBA draft-eligible players to work out with the Jazz according to Wolfson, along with Melvin Ajinca, Ulrich Chomche, Tyler Kolek (Marquette) and Ajay Mitchell (UCSB).

Related: Wisconsin basketball 2024-25 starting lineup, rotation and bench with Andrija Vukovic signing

The five-year Wisconsin veteran exhausted his final year of eligibility in 2023-24. He is now working to start his professional basketball career and has already had several pre-draft workouts.

Wahl’s decorated Wisconsin career came to an end after 162 appearances — 121 of them starts. His final per-game averages included 26.2 minutes, 8.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals on 47.7% shooting.

His most productive statistical season came in 2021-22 on a Badgers team that won the Big Ten regular season title. He averaged 30.5 minutes, 11.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals on 51% shooting that season as he, Johnny Davis and Chucky Hepburn led one of the best Wisconsin teams over the last decade.

The versatile forward played an integral role in Wisconsin’s success since joining the team in 2019. The Badgers won two Big Ten regular season titles in that span, including the 2021-22 team’s exceptional 25-8 overall record and 15-5 mark in Big Ten play.

He and the Badgers did not carry that play into the postseason. But Wahl was at the center of a lively half-decade of Wisconsin basketball.

The former Badger is not expected to be selected in the upcoming NBA draft. The Jazz have picks No. 10 and 29 in the first round, plus No. 32 overall at the start of the second round. It’s a near impossibility that the Jazz select Wahl with any of those picks. His likely NBA path is via a training camp invite or G-League contract.

Wahl could also follow the long line of successful Wisconsin players to find professional success overseas. Brad Davison, Nigel Hayes, Ethan Happ, Nate Reuvers and Sam Dekker all have found success taking that route.

Report: Cowboys to work out LB with UFL honors, NFL experience

From @ToddBrock24f7: Willie Harvey Jr. spent 3 years in the Browns organization and was the UFL’s leading tackler this spring with the St. Louis Battlehawks.

The Cowboys are still looking to bolster their ranks at one key defensive position, and they’re looking to the UFL for possible help.

The team will work out St. Louis Battlehawks linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who cited a source in an X post.

Harvey has NFL experience, too, having spent three seasons in the Cleveland Browns organization. He signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of Iowa State and bounced around between the practice squad, the active roster, and the waiver wire several times through the Browns’ 2022 training camp.

He was drafted by the XFL’s St. Louis squad late that year and played two seasons for the Battlehawks. During the UFL’s inaugural season in spring of this year, his efforts landed him on the All-UFL Team.

Harvey led the league with 76 total tackles over 10 regular-season games. Nine of those tackles were for loss, and he finished tied for 15th in the league in sacks, with four.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The Cowboys head into the summer with a lot of turnover at the position. Leighton Vander Esch has retired, and Markquese Bell will return to his more natural safety slot. Veteran Eric Kendricks was brought aboard this spring to help the unit transition to coordinator Mike Zimmer’s style. DeMarvion Overshown is expected to make his NFL debut after losing his rookie season to an ACL tear, and the team drafted Marist Liufau out of Notre Dame to join Damone Clark in his third season.

A slew of other ‘backers will additionally scrap their way through Oxnard, fighting for a roster spot. Some are familiar names- like Buddy Johnson and Damien Wilson- while newcomers Jason Johnson (Central Florida), Brock Mogensen (South Dakota), and Byron Vaughns (Baylor) hope to do enough to catch on.

Now the Cowboys may be adding the UFL’s leading tackler to that crowded mix.
