Broncos make decision on free agent cornerback

The Broncos do not plan to sign cornerback Jerry Jacobs “at this time,” according to 9News.

After losing starting cornerback Riley Moss to a knee injury for an unknown period, the Denver Broncos brought in some potential depth for a workout on Monday.

Denver hosted free agent cornerback Jerry Jacobs at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit for a workout on Dec. 9, but the 27-year-old defensive back left without a contract.

Jacobs was apparently a candidate to join the practice squad. Following the workout, though, “there are no plans to sign him at this time,” according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Jacobs (5-11, 203 pounds) started 12 games for the Detroit Lions last fall, totaling 55 tackles, eight pass breakups and three interceptions. He spent time with the Los Angeles Rams this summer but did not make their 53-man roster.

If Moss remains sidelined against the Indianapolis Colts this week, the top cornerbacks on the depth chart will be Pat Surtain, Ja’Quan McMillian (slot), Levi Wallace, Kris Abrams-Draine, Damarri Mathis and Tremon Smith.

Wallace started in Week 13 but struggled and was eventually benched in favor of Abrams-Draine. Many fans in Denver would like to see the rookie leapfrog Wallace on the depth chart, but Broncos coach Sean Payton rarely announces such changes (if such a decision is made).

Denver’s first injury report of the week will arrive on Wednesday afternoon, providing an update on Moss’ status going into Week 15.

Broncos work out free agent cornerback following Riley Moss injury

Following the Riley Moss injury, the Broncos brought in cornerback Jerry Jacobs for a workout.

The Denver Broncos might be on the verge of adding reinforcements at cornerback.

The Broncos worked out free agent cornerback Jerry Jacobs on Monday, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The workout happened coming out of Denver’s bye following the Riley Moss MCL injury.

Jacobs (5-11, 203 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas with the Detroit Lions in 2021. He spent three years in Detroit, totaling 131 tackles, 23 pass breakups, four interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 40 games (29 starts).

The Los Angeles Rams signed Jacobs in July but he was later waived during roster cuts in August. After starting 12 games for the Lions last fall, the 27-year-old cornerback has remained a free agent for the 2024 season.

Jacobs is a candidate to join the Broncos’ practice squad, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. They have an opening on the practice squad after losing linebacker Kwon Alexander to the Lions.

Levi Wallace started in Moss’ place against the Cleveland Browns in Week 13. Wallace struggled and was eventually benched in favor of rookie Kris Abrams-Draine. Denver might not be on the verge of adding more depth and competition at the position.

Golf fitness: Kettlebell exercise that targets key swing muscles

If you can’t get out to practice due to cold weather, try this exercise to strengthen all the key muscles.

If you can’t get out to practice due to cold weather, try this golf fitness exercise to strengthen all the key golf swing muscles.

This week, Golfweek’s fitness guru and long driver Averee Dovsek demonstrates a kneeling around-the-world transition to a single-arm kettlebell swing that allows for more control and stability over your center of mass.

Everyone knows that elite athletes can control their center of mass. Golfers require strong and stable core muscles to maintain balance and control during the swing. This exercise targets the core, particularly the transversus abdominis, obliques and erector spine which are essential for rotational stability and power.

The movement also engages the lower back, forearms, glutes and hamstrings.

Broncos worked out one player on Saturday

The Broncos worked out left-footed punter Colton Spangler on Saturday.

The Denver Broncos brought in one player for a workout on Saturday.

Because they are facing left-footed Cleveland Browns punter Corey Bojorquez on Monday Night Football in Week 13, the Broncos worked out left-footed free agent Colton Spangler, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Spangler (6-0, 192 pounds) spent five years punting at Maryland, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in 2022. His career punting average of 42.8 ranks third all-time in Terrapins school history. Spangler punted 80 times for 7,695 yards in college.

Denver presumably wanted to give returners Marvin Mims and Tremon Smith practice fielding left-footed punts this week ahead of the Browns game. The Broncos’ own punter, Riley Dixon, is right-footed, and Mims and Smith usually face right-footed punters on game days as well.

In addition to giving Denver’s returners good reps at practice this week, Spangler could also be a fallback option for the Broncos down the road if the team ever has a punter emergency.

3 players had workouts with Broncos on Friday

The Broncos worked out long snapper Peter Bowden and punters Jake Julien and Ty Zentner on Friday.

The Denver Broncos brought in three special teams players for workouts on Friday, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The team worked out a long snapper — Peter Bowden — and two punters: Jake Julien and Ty Zentner.

Bowden, 23, played college football at Wisconsin. He spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars this year but is yet to appear in a regular season game in the NFL.

Julien, 26, played college football at Eastern Michigan and competed with the New England Patriots at training camp in 2022 before landing in the Canadian Football League in 2023. He earned All-CFL honors with the Edmonton Elks after a record-breaking season in Canada this summer.

Zentner, 26, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State in 2023. He has spent time with four NFL teams, playing in 10 games. In one game with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year, he punted seven times for 281 yards. His career average in the NFL is 44.1 yards per punt (Riley Dixon is averaging 46.7 yards per punt with Denver this season).

Broncos worked out 3 players

  1. LS Peter Bowden
  2. P Jake Julien
  3. P Ty Zenter

Denver previously worked out six players last week. The Broncos are likely looking at candidates for future contracts at the end of the season and/or candidates to sign if injuries pop up later this season.

Saints set to work out former draft pick Boston Scott in the coming days

The Saints are hosting Boston Scott for a workout in the near future, potentially bringing a former draft pick of theirs back home

The New Orleans Saints’ depth has been depleted the last few weeks due to injuries, especially at the running back position. Kendre Miller is now on IR with a hamstring injury, and Jamaal Williams missed Week 9 due to a groin injury. Now the Saints are down to the following at the position:

  • Alvin Kamara
  • Jamaal Williams (groin injury)
  • Jordan Mims
  • Jacob Kibodi (practice squad)

So much for taking the workload off of Alvin Kamara, as he got 29 rush attempts for 155 yards against the Carolina Panthers, as well as six receptions on nine targets for 60 yards through the air.

Now, the Saints will turn to other options for depth at the position, as they will workout one of their former draft picks Boston Scott. Scott was a sixth round pick for the Saints in the 2018 NFL Draft, but never made the active roster and was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles off the Saints practice squad. Scott was a solid option for the Eagles, picking up 302 rush attempts for 1,295 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and 16 touchdowns in his 75 games with them. Additionally, he had 71 receptions for 566 yards (8.0 yards per reception) and a touchdown through the air.

Scott partially tore a meniscus before the 2024 season, which led him to miss the time up until now. However he is now fully healthy according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz, and will be ready to play for a new team.

Broncos worked out 2 offensive linemen on Tuesday

The Broncos worked out center Dieter Eiselen and interior offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland on Tuesday. Eiselen joined the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos have been hit hard by injuries on the offensive line and the team brought in some reinforcements on Tuesday.

The Broncos worked out center Dieter Eiselen and interior offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland. Eiselen won the workout and he was signed to the team’s practice squad.

Sutherland (6-5, 316 pounds) is a fifth-year lineman who has spent time with six NFL teams, playing as a swing guard/center. The 27-year-old lineman has dressed for six games — including two starts — in his career. He most recently spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars last fall.

Denver sought more depth on the line after losing right tackle Alex Palczewski and center Luke Wattenberg to ankle injuries against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The Broncos also lost practice squad offensive tackle Will Sherman to an ankle injury last week.

Eiselen was signed to provide more depth at center and Cam Fleming also joined the practice squad to provide more depth at tackle.

Cowboys to work out WR they almost drafted, nearly traded for

From @ToddBrock24f7: Denzel Mims was a star coming out of Baylor in 2020, but his pro career fizzled. After a near-trade in 2022, he may finally become a Cowboy.

Denzel Mims was linked to the Cowboys when he was a local college prospect. Then the Cowboys front office reportedly reached out about a possible trade for him a few years into a pro career that wasn’t living up to expectations.

Now, just days away from turning 26, the free agent wide receiver and Texas native may be a step closer to finally finding himself wearing the silver and blue.

ESPN’s Todd Archer is reporting that Mims will be working out for the Cowboys on Tuesday, a possible option for shoring up a pass-catching group in Dallas that is left rather thin with the sudden loss of Brandin Cooks to a knee infection.

https://twitter.com/toddarcher/status/1843639932835029013

Mims was a highly-regarded talent in the 2020 draft. The Cowboys knew the Baylor product well and had taken a long look at him for his blazing speed and huge catch radius. But the Cowboys couldn’t have imagined that CeeDee Lamb would fall their way in the first round. With the 51st pick, the Cowboys couldn’t pass up on cornerback Trevon Diggs, and they left Mims on the board. The Jets ended up taking him eight spots later.

But his tenure in New York was marred by injury and personality clashes with the organization. Mims requested a trade heading into his third season, citing a lack of opportunities within the offense. The Cowboys were reportedly one of a handful of teams to inquire about the 6-foot-3 speedster, but deemed the Jets’ asking price of a fourth-round pick too high.

Mims returned to New York for what turned out to be his final year. Overall, he played in just 30 games as a Jet, logging 42 catches for 676 yards and no touchdowns.

He was eventually traded last summer, but the Lions waived him with an injury designation less than a month later. The Steelers then picked him up and signed him to their practice squad, where he stayed for the 2023 season. Mims spent 2024’s camp with Jacksonville and was released in late August.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

In Sunday’s 20-17 win, the Cowboys gave 2022 draft pick Jalen Tolbert the bulk of the extra work in replacing Cooks. Jalen Brooks also saw additional time, KaVontae Turpin received his usual smattering of offensive snaps, and promising rookie Ryan Flournoy made his NFL debut.

But the Cowboys may decide that the WR room could use another body, with Cooks on injured reserve for at least a few more weeks. Or they may be wondering if Cooks, with just nine catches and 91 yards over four games, is still the best answer at WR2.

So if Tuesday’s workout goes well, the team’s longstanding attraction to Mims may finally be consummated with a contract and a helmet with a star on it.

Steelers hosted former second-round WR for workout

The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in former second-round draft selection, the incredibly fast Andy Isabella, for a workout on Monday.

Depth will forever be a facet of the team that the Pittsburgh Steeler pride themselves on making strong.

The offensive line suddenly became thin after three season-ending injuries to the unit took place, and the Steelers attempted to remedy this issue by signing lineman Max Scharping, as well as hosting two additional offensive linemen for workouts.  However, the Steelers also need some depth in their wide receiver room as well.

WR Andy Isabella, a former second-round draft pick out of UMass in 2019, was brought in for a workout on Monday.  Isabella is blazing fast and offers versatility on special teams in the return game as well.

Most recently, Isabella spent time with the Buffalo Bills and could take advantage of Pittsburgh’s depleted receiver room, potentially getting a second chance to revive his less-than-spectacular career.

Pittsburgh could definitely use the boost, as injuries have plagued the team throughout the 2024 season. They’re aiming to get back on track in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys on October 6th, at 8:20 PM EST.
