Alabama Women’s Soccer receives a No. 1 seed in NCAA tournament

No. 1 Alabama women’s soccer hosts first NCAA tournament game Friday

The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s soccer has received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and as a result, the team will have its first game in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide will host Jackson State, the winners of the SWAC, who are 11-7-1 on the year at 6 p.m. CST on Friday.

Alabama finishes the year 19-2-1, including a 15-game winning streak that earned the Tide the No. 1 ranking in the country. Alabama lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC championship snapping the streak.

South Carolina is the No. 3 team in Alabama’s region along with No. 2 Duke and No. 4 USC. So, there is a chance the Tide and Gamecocks meet again in the Elite Eight.

If Alabama can get past Jackson State on Friday they will face the winner of Arizona State vs. Portland in the second round.

Razorbacks land at No. 8 in United Soccer Coaches Poll

Arkansas soccer is coming off its best season in school history.

Tuesday afternoon, the United Soccer Coaches Poll released their preseason rankings, with Arkansas earning No. 8 in the polls.

The Razorbacks are the highest among the four SEC teams in the polls. Tennessee falls in at No. 11, followed by South Carolina at 12. Ole Miss is the lowest ranked SEC team at No. 18.

Arkansas will travel to Provo, Utah September 8 to take the BYU, who landed at the No. 3 spot in the rankings, coming off their 16-5-2 record in 2021.

Last season, the Razorbacks had their most successful season in program history, winning a season-record 19 matches, their third straight SEC regular season title, and the program’s first NCAA Elite 8 appearance.

The first home game of the season is against Depaul on August 21.

Notre Dame beats Marquette in women’s soccer

Unbeaten through four games isn’t half bad…

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team improved to 3-0-1 on the young season Sunday with a 1-0 win at Marquette.

The lone goal came from freshman midfielder Sophia Fisher, the first goal of her Notre Dame career.

Notre Dame dominated the scoring chances and outshot Marquette 18-8 on the day, but only Fisher found the back of the net.

This is the second time in three seasons Notre Dame has gone unbeaten through their first four games and return home to host Purdue on Thursday night.

Highlights:

Notre Dame women’s soccer won’t travel to Mizzou this weekend

COVID-19 has cost Notre Dame’s women’s soccer team their last two games now.

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won’t travel to Missouri this Friday to take on the Tigers due to positive tests within the Fighting Irish program.

Friday’s match was cancelled with no plan to reschedule.  This follows Notre Dame having to cancel Sunday’s game that was scheduled to be played at Kansas.

The Irish have not played since March 20 when they beat Missouri 2-0 on senior day in South Bend.

Notre Dame’s next scheduled contest is set to take place on April 11 in Stillwater, Oklahoma as the Irish are set to take on Oklahoma State.

Notre Dame women’s soccer dominates Syracuse

Notre Dame’s women’s soccer team had more goals on Sunday than Syracuse had shots on goal. Details to ND’s latest win here.

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team dominated Syracuse on Sunday and won their third straight contest with a 2-0 win.

Kiki Van Zanten handled the scoring for Irish as her first goal of the day came just before halftime at the 42 minute mark and was assisted by Brooke Van Dyck.

Van Zanten’s second goal of the day came with just minutes remaining the contest as she scored at the 89′ mark to cap the scoring by giving Notre Dame a 2-0 lead.

The win kept Notre Dame unbeaten all-time at home against Syracuse, a series that has now seen nine games, none of which Syracuse has even scored in.

Notre Dame’s defense was so stout on Sunday in fact that goalkeeper Mattie Interian had to make just one stop to record the shutout.

The win was Notre Dame’s third straight and moved the Irish to 3-1-0 on the year while Syracuse dropped to 0-3-0.

Notre Dame returns to action when they host Wake Forest on October 15.

Watch: Brianna Martinez Reads ‘Ten Little Ladybugs’

Some of you with small children might be looking for a new bedtime story for them.

Some of you with small children might be looking for a new bedtime story for them. Enter Notre Dame women’s soccer defender Brianna Martinez. The junior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was featured on Notre Dame’s Twitter account Sunday. Specifically, she read “Ten Little Ladybugs”, written by Melanie Gerth and illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith:

It’s been an exciting year for Martinez. She was selected for the 2020 U-20 U.S. Women’s National Team for the CONCACAF Championship. The team clinched a spot in the U-20 Women’s World Cup. That tournament was to have taken place in Costa Rica and Panama this month, but COVID-19 pushed it to January, and it now will happen in Costa Rica only.

With her and her teammates’ season postponed, Martinez is devoting her time to other things. Clearly, this includes reading to children in what is considered the safest possible fashion at this time:  virtually. Hopefully, other Notre Dame fall sports athletes can do something similar until they can compete again.
