What Michigan head coach Dusty May said after narrow win over Wisconsin

Michigan head coach Dusty May addressed the media following the Wolverines’ 67-64 win over Wisconsin on Tuesday.

May, who took over the Wolverines’ head coaching responsibility this spring after Juwan Howard was fired, secured his first career Big Ten win as Michigan’s head coach vs. the Badgers. He previously coached at Florida Atlantic — and took the Owls to the Final Four in 2022-23 in his fifth season at the helm

To steal the victory over Wisconsin, May turned to his two-headed attack of big men Danny Wolf and Vladislav Goldin. Wolf, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and a team-best five assists, primarily orchestrated the Wolverines’ offense in the fourth quarter.

“He really is a guard in a 7-footer’s body,” May said. “The way he dribbles, the way he shoots it, the way he can create space. As the games have boiled down, we’re trying to figure out what’s our best plan of attack in the half court. That, in a small sample size, had been a really efficient attack for us. So we started trying to get everyone more aware of it… Danny wasn’t trying to hit home runs, he was just making the right play… he created the advantage.”

Goldin also played a monumental role. The 7-footer scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half, including the final six points for Michigan.

“I think he picks his spots really well,” May said of Goldin. “Obviously he’s so big and strong around the rim. Offensively, when you have the hands that he has and you’re such a big target, we’ve got to find ways to continue to get him the ball. He played at a very efficient rate, and I think he had a few that didn’t drop that we expect to go in moving forward.”

In preparation for the Badgers, May focused on Wisconsin wings John Blackwell and John Tonje. The two account for more than 37 points per appearance for UW and generate countless opportunities at the free throw line.

By keeping the two from exploding offensively, the Badgers turned to others to create from deep. Greg Gard’s seven other rotational pieces went a combined 3-21 from deep in the loss.

“Blackwell and Tonje, they shoot the three off the bounce, off the catch, they get downhill and when you reach, they make you pay,” May said. “I thought they both found different ways to impact the game. We took a calculated risk to plug a bit more off the big guys, and they didn’t knock them down tonight. Also, because we were going at them a little bit defensively, maybe they didn’t have quite the legs. I’m not sure. Our game plan was to keep those two off the free throw line and try to limit their three-point shots.”

Michigan now moves to 7-1 on the season and will likely wind up in the next installation of the AP Poll. Wisconsin, meanwhile, falls to 8-1. It is back in action on Saturday against No. 5 Marquette.

The Big Ten releases statement on post game incident following Michigan State vs. Michigan game

The Big Ten releases statement on post game incident following Michigan State vs. Michigan game

Following Michigan State’s loss to Michigan, a nasty scene followed where players were pushing, shoving, and at one point, seemingly stomping individuals who fell on the ground. Although it was difficult to see exactly what happened on video, MSU athletic director Alan Haller requested the Big Ten investigate the incident, which Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore even admitted was ‘unacceptable’. On Tuesday, the Big Ten released a statement on the events that occurred.

While the results of the Big Ten’s investigation aren’t exactly surprising considering the parties involved, they will definitely frustrate MSU fans, who watched Spartan players be severely punished after a similar situation occurred back in 2022 in the infamous ‘tunnel incident.’

Here is what the Big Ten had to say:

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore calls players’ actions in skirmish with MSU ‘unacceptable’

Sherrone Moore called his players’ actions in the post game skirmish against MSU ‘unacceptable’

There was another ugly chapter written in the Michigan State vs. Michigan rivalry this weekend when a Michigan player was seen stomping what has now been confirmed to be a Michigan State player and staffer in what was a chaotic post game skirmish following MSU’s loss to the Wolverines.

While MSU athletic director Alan Haller said he has already contacted the Big Ten about the incident, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore also took accountability for the actions of his team, which he called ‘unacceptable’. Moore also said that he will be addressing the situation internally and promises that it will ‘never happen again.’

Jonathan Smith comments on Michigan State vs. Michigan rivalry

Jonathan Smith commented on the MSU vs. U of M rivalry: ‘We will not forget Saturday night’

Jonathan Smith has played and coached in big rivalry games before. Coming from Oregon State, he has dealt with the Oregon rivalry for much of his football career. However, coming out of a loss to Michigan in a game that ended in an ugly incident, Jonathan Smith noted that the Michigan vs. MSU rivalry ‘is different’.

Here is what he had to say in his press conference Monday:

“We will not forget Saturday night, I promise you that. But we’re moving forward.” Smith also said he could feel the ‘genuine dislike’ between the fan bases before the game. “After experiencing this one time, this thing is different. And that crystallized for me on Saturday.”

Michigan State women’s basketball beats Michigan on the road

Michigan State women’s basketball beats Michigan on the road

For the second time this weekend, a Michigan State basketball team has beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Spartans earned their 18th win of the season with a 70-66 victory over the Wolverines.

This was a well-rounded victory for MSU, as they were led in scoring by bench guard Tory Ozment, who scored 16. The usual suspects also came through today, with DeeDee Hagemann scoring 14 and adding 3 assists, and Julia Ayrault, who scored 13 points on the day.

Theryn Hallock also added 11 points and 2 steals off the bench.

The Spartans are now 18-7 on the year and 8-6 in the Big Ten as they continue their march towards the NCAA Tournament under new head coach Robyn Fralick.

On Saturday night, Michigan State basketball earned one of their most satisfying wins of the season, taking down their rival, Michigan, in Ann Arbor 73-63.

This was an important one for MSU for many reasons. This team now has won three conference road games, something that has been extremely hard for them, and many other teams, to come by this season.

It also featured another dominant performance from Malik Hall (18 points), who, along with Tyson Walker (19 points), led the Spartans in scoring. This has been extremely encouraging sign as Michigan State approaches March.

After the game, Tom Izzo, A.J. Hoggard, Tyson Walker and Malik Hall all spoke to the media, and you can find each of those interviews below, which were recorded and posted on YouTube by SpartanMag.com. Juwan Howard, Tarris Reed Jr. and Nimari Burnett also spoke to the media, and their session was recorded by UMHoops.com.
