WATCH: Wisconsin wins the Duke’s Mayo Bowl…and then Graham Mertz accidentally breaks the trophy in the locker room

The Badgers may be coming home shorthanded after all

The important thing is that Wisconsin football won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in convincing fashion over Wake Forest. The 42-28 win saw the Badgers pick off Demon Deacon’s QB Sam Hartman four times in the second half and cruise in the fourth quarter to their fourth win of the season.

What happened after? Well, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl trophy will not be coming home in one piece. Here is what it looked like in all its glory before it was handed to the Badgers:

What’s its status now? NBC 15 Madison’s George Balekji was the first to show us that, well, it’s completely shattered:

Who was the culprit that fumbled an expensive piece of hardware? The world may have never known as Paul Chryst and the players were staying hush hush in the postgame presser:

Alas, this is 2020 and nothing gets past social media. The Zone Madison sports director Zach Helpirin got his hands on a video via Wisconsin RB Julius Davis. It was a solid all-around performance from Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz on the field, just not in the locker room:

What do great leaders do when things don’t go according to plan? They don’t panic, they improvise. That’s exactly what Mertz did. Check out the new and improved trophy he made courtesy of Badgers RB Jalen Berger and Mertz on instagram:

I think the Duke’s Mayo Bowl has found their new trophy.

Halftime Update: Wisconsin and Minnesota locked in a close one

The Badgers and Gophers are locked in a tight battle

An old-school “Battle for the Axe,” has broken out at Camp Randall through 30 minutes. Punts, missed field goals, and a key turnover have defined the first 30 minutes. Wisconsin and Minnesota are tied at 7 after two quarters, with the running game leading the way for both teams.

Minnesota opened the scoring with a late first quarter pass from Tanner Morgan that found Cam Wiley in the end zone. Wisconsin responded with a drive that took 2:47 seconds to go 75 yards. A massive play from RB Garrett Groshek finished it off as he exploded for a 39-yard touchdown run.

It’s been more of the same for redshirt-freshman QB Graham Mertz, as he has struggled to move the football and missed a couple of throws he would want back. Wisconsin has taken care of the football so far, and the Gophers had a key turnover in the second quarter that flipped momentum. Morgan’s pass was intercepted by Eric Burrell in the end zone, keeping the game tied at 7.

Minnesota’s star RB Mohamed Ibrahim has 11 carries for 69 total yards to lead P.J. Fleck’s team.

Groshek has stepped up for the Badgers without Jalen Berger and Nakia Watson available. The senior has 9 carries for 80 yards and the long touchdown scamper.

LOOK: Wisconsin football releases their week one depth chart

The Badgers depth chart is now out

With a Wisconsin football game just five days away, we now have a look at the week one depth chart. Filled with surprises, especially if you had thought about what it may look a few months ago, the Badgers boast a team filled with juniors and seniors but led by a redshirt-freshman under center. ImageEarly notes that stick out begin on offense with Jon Dietzen returning to football and returning to the starting unit on the line. Expect to see Garrett Groshek in on third down with Nakia Watson taking a majority of the handoffs at RB in week one.

Defensively, Houston transfer Collin Wilder gets the initial nod alongside Eric Burrell at safety. After an impressive preseason, freshman LB Nick Herbig is listed behind Izayah Green-May at OLB. Division III transfer Andy Vujnovich is now eligible and gets the nod at punter.

Coach Bostad raves about an under-the-radar key piece to the 2020 Badger defense

Heading into the Wisconsin Badgers’ 2020 season, much of the talk on the defensive side of the football has revolved around junior linebacker Jack Sanborn, the talented veteran secondary and who will replace Zack Baun and Chris Orr’s sack production.

This talk has seen names including Izayah Green-May, Nick Herbig, Leo Chenal come up. What it has also done, though, is leave out a player who is set to have a huge role in Jim Leonhard’s defense.

That player is senior inside linebacker Mike Maskalunas.

In inside linebackers coach Bob Bostad’s eyes, Maskalunas’ value to the team can be captured by one word: “priceless.”

“Mike’s done a great job,” Bostad said. “I can’t say enough good things about him.” His coach then continued to note the senior’s versatility–saying he’s able to play the MIKE, the WILL and be a leader on special teams.

Maskalunas doesn’t have much on-field experience under his belt, just 14 games played in his first three years and a total of 21 tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss and 2 fumble recoveries.

Despite the linebacker not having starts under his belt, though, defensive leader Jack Sanborn shared his coach’s sentiment about Maskalunas’ importance to the team this year.

“[Mike] brings consistency,” Sanborn said. “[He]’s a guy that everyone on the team can rely on.” He then went on to note how the senior has progressed in understanding the defense and in understanding his own technique.

Although Sanborn and sophomore Leo Chenal are lining up to be the team’s primary starters at inside linebacker when Illinois comes town next Friday, just two guys never seems to be enough.

Coach Bostad finishing his comments by saying that he feels “rock-solid” about the trio–Sanborn, Chenal and Maskalunas–heading into the season says a lot about the Chenal-Sanborn duo, but it also indicates Maskalunas having a significant role in what he and Leonhard want to do on defense.

The Badgers are set to kick their season off next Friday night against the Illinois Fighting Illini in what has become one of the most long-awaited season openers I can remember.

It will be then when we see what the linebacker rotation looks like and what role Maskalunas has for Coach Bostad, Coach Leonhard and the 2020 Wisconsin Badger defense.

LOOK: 2021 Wisconsin target Skyler Bell shows off his leaping ability

The Badger target posted a solid broad jump on Twitter yesterday

The Badgers have a problem they need to solve at the WR position in the class of 2021. One of the names that Wisconsin coaches and 2021 commits have been going after is WR Skyler Bell out of the Taft School in Connecticut. The Badgers are in a battle with Iowa, and other Big Ten schools, for Bell’s services.

Yesterday, Bell posted a video showing off his athleticism on Twitter. The Taft School product recorded a 10’7 broad jump, and other 2021 Wisconsin commits took notice.

2021 Wisconsin QB commit Deacon Pe’a Hill is doing his best to recruit Bell to Madison.

Wisconsin RB commit Loyal Crawford is also looking to bolster the offense in 2021.

Wisconsin’s class of 2021 remains committed to recruiting other players to join them in what is already one of the best classes in program history.
