Final game grades, report card for Wisconsin vs. Wake Forest

The Wisconsin Badgers finished their season with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Final game grades and a…

As Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson said after the Wisconsin Badgers’ 42-28 Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory, “they didn’t beat themselves, and that’s what good football teams do.”

That sentence perfectly encaptures the 2020 Duke’s Mayo Bowl, as Wisconsin played a consistent game of football and took control of the ballgame when Wake Forest Sam Hartman threw four second-half interceptions.

While there were more points scored than we see during a normal Wisconsin football game, the game followed the script of nearly every Badger game this season: the team who won the turnover battle won the game handily.

Yesterday I went through the film of the game and focused on the performances of freshman quarterback Graham Mertz, freshman offensive tackle Logan Brown, the secondary and more.

From the film, here are final game grades and a report card for Wisconsin’s win against Wake Forest:

What Wake Forest HC Dave Clawson said about Wisconsin after the game

The Wisconsin Badgers defeated Wake Forest yesterday 42-28 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Head Coach Dave Clawson spoke about Wisconsin football

The Wisconsin Badgers rode a four-interception performance by the defense and a few splash plays on special teams to a 42-28 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons yesterday in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

The win puts the Badgers at 4-3 to finish the year, and even though the team struggled at times as well and missed games due to COVID-19, they finished the season strong and now have momentum to carry into 2021.

When Wake Forest Head Coach Dave Clawson spoke after the game he had nothing but good things to say about the Wisconsin football program and the way they executed on the field yesterday.

“First off congratulations to Wisconsin. Good win for their program,” Clawson said. “Football is usually a game where the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. They made a lot less mistakes than us, they played much better fundamental football. I’m proud of the way we compete to the very end. I thought our guys battled physically. But we just made too many fatal mistakes to overcome.”

The story of the game was Demon Deacon quarterback Sam Hartman’s four third-quarter interceptions, those coming after the team had only thrown one pick all year.

The Wake Forest coach discussed the turnovers, citing both mistakes from the quarterback and crediting the Badger defense for capitalizing.

“We threw one interception all year,” Clawson said. “I just think we telegraphed some things, I thought [Sam Hartman] held on to targets too long and Wisconsin did a great job of breaking on his eyes and breaking on the arm action.”

His description continued to note his offense’s missed opportunities and how they put the team in a tough spot in the second half.

“We had open guys in the first half that we missed. I thought we should’ve come out of that half up 21-7 or 28-14 and we just missed some plays” Clawson said. “We dropped the ball, we missed open receivers. And Wisconsin is just a steady, consistent program that doesn’t beat themselves. It’s not one thing, they did a great job and we didn’t play well.”

Clawson then had some words on the interceptions relating to the scheme of the plays and what Wisconsin did on defense to counter them.

“They ran a field pressure and our quarterback thought it was man, a man pressure but it was a zone pressure,” Clawson said when talking about Noah Burks’ interception. “They dropped one guy out and the ball just shouldn’t have gone there…We hit that thing earlier against man and we got a nice sideline route to Christian Beal. But that’s not where the ball goes against zone…The other the safety jumped it. We were running slant routes, we threw the ball late and the safety just jumped it. The other two I’ll have to watch closer but just not a good day.”

Here is how the Wake Forest head coach finished his comments on the game and on the Badgers’ performance.

“Credit Wisconsin, but we beat ourselves. They didn’t beat themselves, and that’s what good football teams do.”

Five starters are OUT for Wisconsin today against Wake Forest

The injury report is out for Wisconsin football’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup against Wake Forest. For yet another week, the report brought…

The Wisconsin football program has released its pregame status report heading into their Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Excluded from the injury list, meaning he will suit up and play, is running back Jalen Berger—a player who has missed the team’s last two games.

Listed as out for the game, however, are wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis, left tackle Cole Van Lanen, defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk and right guard Logan Bruss.

Also out for today is backup running back Nakia Watson and backup cornerback Semar Melvin.

The absence of Pryor and Davis today will mean the two receivers combined to play only five games this season—that after the offense showed promise Week 1 against Illinois when the two players were both healthy.

Quarterback Graham Mertz and the Wisconsin offense will now need to see tight end Jake Ferguson and wide receivers Chimere Dike and Jack Dunn step up in the receiving game and replacements along the offensive line to play well if the unit wants to compliment their rushing attack and find success against a soft Wake Forest defense.

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Duke’s Mayo Bowl

It’ll be pure power vs. crafty quickness. Wisconsin’s offense has been injured, inept, and inconsistent after an amazing start, but the defense is No. 1 in the nation overall, No. 1 on third downs, and the team is No. 1 in time of possession.

Wake Forest has a fun, creative attack that doesn’t care a lick about controlling the clock, moves quickly, and doesn’t get a whole lot out of the lines.

The two teams know how to do bowl games right. Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson is 3-1 in bowls with the program, only losing last year in a good fight against Michigan State in the Pinstripe.

Wisconsin lost to Justin Herbert and Oregon in a thriller of a Rose Bowl last season, but head coach Paul Chryst is 4-1 with the Badgers in bowls.

The quarterbacks are going to be the story. Wisconsin doesn’t have an elite running back, but Graham Mertz is the highest-ranked quarterback recruit in the program’s history. He’s working through the rough patches of a tough season – the receiving corps has been leveled by injuries – but he’s a talent. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman is a fun veteran who threw ten touchdown passes and just one interception.

Wisconsin vs. Wake Forest: 10 players to watch

The Wisconsin Badgers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons are set to meet on Wednesday in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl as Graham Mertz looks to finish his

It is game week for the Wisconsin Badgers as they get ready for Wednesday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The two teams enter the contest with similar records, though they took completely opposite paths to reach where they stand today.

The Badgers, as you probably know, began their season with two straight victories, then went on a three-game losing streak and finally finished their regular season with a win over Minnesota to move to 3-3.

Wake Forest, on the other hand, began the season with two losses, won four straight including a 23-16 victory over then-No. 19-ranked Virginia Tech and finally finished their regular season with two losses to move to 4-4.

Furthermore, although the two squads sit at .500 entering the contest, their path to success looks a lot different—Wisconsin’s coming through running the ball and playing defense and Wake Forest’s through playing fast and getting points on the board as quickly as possible.

So, with opposite styles of play set to face off, there are a few pivotal matchups that will dictate the pace of Wednesday’s game and decides who comes out on top.

Those matchups and more are highlighted below in my Duke’s Mayo Bowl edition of 10 players to watch:

Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz is ‘good to go’ for Wednesday’s game

Wisconsin Badger quarterback Graham Mertz saying during a press conference today that he will suit up and play against Wake Forest this week

During the Wisconsin Badgers’ 20-17 victory over rival Minnesota, quarterback Graham Mertz missed much of the second half after suffering an injury during a red zone rush attempt.

Despite the injury, Mertz was still listed as the starter on the team’s depth chart that was released a few days ago, so signs were pointing towards the redshirt freshman being able to suit up for the team’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup against Wake Forest.

Today that news was confirmed, as the Badger quarterback said during a press conference that he’s “good to go” for Wednesday’s game.

We now await the status of wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis—players who have missed the last several weeks but, as they have been all season, were still included in the team’s two-deep.

The Badgers and Demon Deacons are set to kick off on December 30 at 11 a.m. CST as each team looks to finish the season above .500.

Team preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Wisconsin Badgers are set to take the field in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Here is a team preview of…

The 3-3 Wisconsin Badgers are set to close out their 2020 season in just four days when they take the field against the 4-4 Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

It is a finish line that seemed nearly impossible to reach at points this year, with the Big Ten initially postponing the season and the Badger football program experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak after their Week 1 victory against Illinois.

But we are now just a few days away from the finish line becoming reality and even though it’s been a bumpy road on the field to reach this point, completing a season during a year like this should be considered a success.

Many times when the Badgers enter a Bowl game it is against a team they have some history with—especially when they find themselves in or near the New Year’s Six.

Wake Forest, however, is a program Wisconsin has never faced–though the Badgers are 9-9-1 all-time against ACC schools and 4-1 against the conference in Bowl Games.

So there isn’t the level of familiarity that comes with a matchup against Oregon from the PAC-12 or Auburn from the SEC.

A complete Christmas list for the Wisconsin football program

The Wisconsin Badger football program could use a lot for Christmas, including a win in their Bowl Game against Wake Forest, health…

We’re in the middle of the holiday season and the Wisconsin Badgers are six days away from playing their Bowl Game and finishing the 2020 season.

It’s been a challenging season for everybody involved, and it hasn’t necessarily become one to remember for fans of the program.

Related: Wisconsin football seniors 2021 roster decision tracker

But back in August and early September, the Badgers weren’t even set to play a season, and as I’ve said numerous times finishing the year at all should be seen as a success.

The biggest thing to take away from the 2020 campaign should be the development of key young offensive players and the valuable experience that the schedule provided.

The most significant of those guys is obviously redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz, who started the season with two tremendous performances but has really struggled since.

Nobody will remember the 3-3 regular season and the team’s three-game losing streak many years from now, as this period will be looked back upon as a valuable dress rehearsal of what Mertz, freshman RB Jalen Berger, freshman WR Chimere Dike and the youth on the team will bring to the field in future years.
