Wisconsin’s Week 4 opponent, new Big Ten rival names starting quarterback

The University of Southern California named redshirt junior Miller Moss its starting quarterback on Monday.

The news, although not directly revolving around the Badgers, is noteworthy for Luke Fickell’s crew ahead of its 2024 campaign. Wisconsin will square off against head coach Lincoln Riley’s Moss-lead Trojans in Los Angeles on Sept. 28.

UW’s Week 4 test will arrive exactly two weeks after its highly-anticipated Week 3 battle at home against the No. 5-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The bout will also be Wisconsin’s first Big Ten test and its first away game of the season.

Moss served as the backup to Caleb Williams in 2023 — who went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Moss now takes the reins of Lincoln Riley’s high-power offense in what will be USC’s first taste of the Big Ten.

In his three-year tenure career in L.A., Moss is 66-for-92 (71.7%) for 914 yards with nine touchdowns through the air. The California native also set the record for most TD passes thrown in a Holiday Bowl following his six-touchdown output in the 2024 edition against No. 16 Louisville.

While it’s a welcome sight to see Williams off the turf, Moss will enter the match with both experience and wisdom when the Badgers make the trek to California. With two years sitting behind the future NFL star, Moss knows a thing or two about what it takes to perform in big spots.

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Badgers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

Oh that’s fun … Wisconsin gets to go to Ohio State. And Michigan State to face former Badger-now-Michigan State coach Mel Tucker. And gets a possibly dangerous Maryland team – but that’s coming off a two-week break.

There’s no Michigan or Penn State – that’s obviously a plus – but there’s no Indiana or Rutgers, either.

In West play, Minnesota and Purdue come to Camp Randall, but back-to-back road games against Iowa and Nebraska is rough.

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: It’s all about the road games

There are five road dates, but they’re all a problem.

Going to Ohio State is brutal, and it’s worse when it starts a run of three road games in four weeks. The Badgers always turn the ball over a bazillion times at Northwestern, and that’s followed up by the trip to Michigan State.

Again, the Iowa and Nebraska games on two straight road dates is an issue.

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Washington State will bring a fun passing game, but the Badgers get to ease into the season with all three non-conference games at home. They get a free pass with that date at Ohio State to follow.

It’s a workable schedule to win the West and get to the Big Ten Championship, but it’s all going to come down to those two road games against Iowa and Nebraska. Win those two, (most likely) get to Indianapolis.

A look at Wisconsin’s 2022 football schedule

It’s never too early to look at what’s ahead for Wisconsin football come this fall. The Badgers finished off their 2021 campaign with a Las Vegas Bowl win over Arizona State, and now look towards a 2022 season where they will face Ohio State and Michigan State in Big Ten play.

While the Badgers lose a number of pieces from a 2021 defense that was near the top in nearly every statistical category, there are key contributors returning on both sides of the ball.

It all begins on Saturday, September 3 as Wisconsin takes on Illinois State at Camp Randall. How does the rest of the schedule shape up? Here is a complete look at Wisconsin’s 2022 football schedule:

A look back at every game played between Wisconsin and Penn State

A look at every game played between Wisconsin and Penn State all-time:

Wisconsin and Penn State have long been Big Ten foes in a series that has gone back-and-forth between the two powerhouses. The Nittany Lions currently hold a slight edge in 19 games played, with a 10-9 series lead that the Badgers hope to tie up this Saturday.

The first meeting between the two storied programs came back in 1953, although the matchup did not become consistent until the mid-1990’s when the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten conference. It has recently been a series dominated by Penn State over the last decade.

Here is a look back at every game played between the two teams as they get ready to open the 2021 season:

Report: Wisconsin has chosen a new athletic director

The Badgers have chosen a successor to Barry Alvarez

Wisconsin is reportedly staying in-house for a successor to legendary athletic director Barry Alvarez. First reported by 620 WTMJ’s Nick Van Wagenen and later confirmed by The Athletic and various other sources, the Badgers are expected to announce Chris McIntosh as the next Wisconsin AD in a press conference on Wednesday morning.

McIntosh is a lifelong Badger who captained Wisconsin’s back-to-back Rose Bowl winning teams in 1998 and 1999. He was an All-American offensive tackle and All-Big Ten performer in 1999 before becoming a first round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2000 NFL draft.

In more relative experience to the AD position, McIntosh has been the deputy athletic director under Alvarez since December of 2014. The Badger State native will jump up from second in command to the top role with the retirement of the Wisconsin great.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Schedule Analysis: It’s not going to be a boring first half of the season.

On the negative side, the Badgers have to play Michigan and Penn State from the East. On the positive side, both games are at home. Those two along with the date with Notre Dame in Chicago come in the first games, and if that wasn’t annoying enough, playing Army in the middle of two road games stinks.

Iowa, Northwestern and Nebraska are all in Camp Randall in the second half of the year, but the regular season finale is at Minnesota.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Schedule Best Case Scenario: The Badgers take care of home. They beat Penn State, Michigan, Iowa, Northwestern and Nebraska in Madison, and they hit the knuckleball against Army. Start there, throw in a great win over Notre Dame, and they can afford one off day against Minnesota or in one of those nasty home dates and still be in the College Football Playoff hunt.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Schedule Worst Case Scenario: Realistically this won’t be a losing season, but there are enough gaffes early to finish with just six to seven wins.

The wheels come off right away. The Badgers lose to both Penn State and Michigan, and start 1-3 with a loss to the Irish. Things get even rougher after not handling the Army option running game one week, and the Purdue passing attack the following week.

How Wisconsin’s defense will find success against Illinois

Wisconsin football and good defense: words that are seemingly inseparable.

Tomorrow the new-look Badger defense will take the field and look to build upon their impressive 2019 campaign, though obviously will do so without the services of Zack Baun and Chris Orr.

As I wrote in my five keys to victory, there are two major things the Badger defense must do tomorrow if they want to shut down the Illinois Fighting Illini and help the team come away with a victory.

Related: Players to watch in the Illinois vs. Wisconsin matchup tomorrow

The first: they must hold Illinois to under 3 yards-per-carry.

As Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard said this week, “for us it always starts with stopping the run. When we do a good job of stopping the run we can dictate a little bit more, we can be a little more aggressive.”

Any Badger fan when asked about what the defense needs to do well would cite the run game, but it’s more than just shutting down the opposing running back. If they can hold the Fighting Illini to under 3 yards-per-carry they will force the issue in the passing game and create turnovers, get their opponent to third-and-long scenarios and get off the field and, overall, allow the Badger offense to dictate the football game.

You don’t need me to tell you this, but the unit did not do that last season when they visited Illinois as they allowed 141 yards on the ground with a clip of 4 yards-per-carry.

This isn’t only about last year’s contest between the two, though, as holding opponents to less than 3 yards-per-carry last season actually had a significant effect on whether the Badgers won each game.

Their record last season when they held their opponent to less than 3 yards-per-carry? 8-1 with the only loss coming against Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Their record last season when didn’t? 2-3.

It sounds obvious at first, but shutting down the Fighting Illini in the running game will dictate whether the defense is effective.

Now on to major focal point No. 2: taking Illinois wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe out of the game.

Last year Imatorbhebhe was the Fighting Illini’s leading receiver with 33 catches for 634 yards and 9 touchdowns, one of those catches being a 29-yard touchdown against the Badgers.

Leonhard returns his entire secondary from last season–a unit that projects to be one of the best the conference has to offer. So, for them to shut down the Illinois passing attack on Friday they must take Imatorbhebhe out of the game.

The wide receiver is a big, physical, point-of-catch, big-playmaking wide receiver with late-round NFL Draft potential. Oh, and he averaged an insane 19.2 yards-per-reception last year.

Leonhard’s secondary has the talent to shut him down but it will need to be done on the field if the defense is going to play a complete game and have success.

If the Badger defense comes out on Friday and consistently wins in the trenches against Illinois in addition to shutting down Imatorbhebhe they will have a successful outing. If not? It could become a close game and give Badger fans scary flashbacks to last year’s contest.

LOOK: Wisconsin’s new 2020 football schedule

The Badgers have a new football schedule

For the third time, and hopefully the final time, Wisconsin has a 2020 football schedule. This time around, the Big Ten will be playing eight games beginning on the weekend of October 24.

Here is a look at the brand new Wisconsin football schedule:

The Badgers have a new week one opponent in Illinois, having previously been scheduled to meet up with Indiana in the first two iterations of the conference schedule. The rivalry matchup with Minnesota will take place at Camp Randall on November 28. The two Big Ten East opponents for the Badgers are Michigan and Indiana, who were both included on their initial 2020 schedule.

USA TODAY: Wisconsin has a top-5 “interesting” non-conference schedule

The Badgers play an intriguing non-conference slate

As we move closer to the hopeful starting date of the 2020 football season, anticipation continues to build, specifically surrounding Wisconsin’s early non-conference schedule. USA TODAY Sports recently took a wide look at non-conference schedules around the country and ranked who had the most interesting group of opponents. The Badgers came in at No. 4 overall for good reason.

Here is what Wisconsin’s non-conference slate looks like:

Week 2: vs. Southern Illinois

Week 3: vs. Appalachian State

Week 5: vs. Notre Dame (at Lambeau for now)

The cupcake game is easy to see as Wisconsin welcomes FCS Southern Illinois to Camp Randall in the second week of the season. If you have not heard this warning already, hear it from me right now: do not overlook Appalachian State. If you have yet to jump on the App State bandwagon, you had better hurry because the train is filling up. This is a squad that lost one game last season and ended the year ranked as the No. 20 overall team in the nation with wins over North Carolina and South Carolina. The small town of Boone, North Carolina, where App State is located, runs college football in the Carolinas.

Then, you have the marquee matchup with Notre Dame that will hopefully take place at Lambeau Field in Green Bay despite recent reports that the game may be moved. A battle of two teams with New Years Bowl aspirations on NBC will be one of the marquee games of Wisconsin’s season in 2020. This non-conference slate certainly is among the most intriguing in the nation.
