On Sunday, Rutgers baseball (3-0) closed out a three-game sweep with a 7-6 extra-inning victory against Winthrop (0-3) to start the 2024 season.

The Scarlet Knights kicked off their season on Friday with a 14-5 victory in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to capture their first victory of the season. Rutgers carried that momentum into Saturday with a 3-1 win over the Eagles.

Sunday’s matchup wasn’t an easy one for the Scarlet Knights as they saw a 6-4 lead erased in the eighth inning but were able to push across a run and keep the Eagles off the scoreboard in the final three frames.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Eagles climbed back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Winthrop would tie the back in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Rutgers continued to rely on its bullpen depth to carry them. Rutgers grabbed the lead in the 11th inning with an RBI single by Johnny Volpe.

Making his Rutgers debut after not pitching in 2023, Rutgers called upon closer Gavin Stellpflug to lock down the victory. Stellpflug worked around a one-out error and got a strikeout and groundout to earn the save and finish off the sweep.

Blake Wright and Tyler Corbitt both hit multiple-run home runs to lead Clemson to a 9-3 victory over Winthrop at The Winthrop Ballpark on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who won the home-and-home season series 2-0, improved to 17-7, while the Eagles dropped to 6-17. It marked Clemson’s first game at Winthrop since 1993.

The win was Head Coach Monte Lee’s 500th career victory in his 14th season as a head coach.

In the second inning, Wright belted an opposite-field, two-run homer, his third of the year, then Benjamin Blackwell lofted a sacrifice fly later in the frame. Dillon Morton blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning to tie the score 3-3.

Clemson responded with four runs in the fifth inning, capped by Corbitt’s three-run homer, his fourth of the year, then it added a run in the sixth inning on Cooper Ingle’s grounder. Max Wagner’s two-out single in the eighth inning added another run.

Tiger reliever Ty Olenchuk (2-0) earned the win by tossing 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, no runs and one walk with four strikeouts. Eagle reliever Nate Butcher (0-1) suffered the loss, as he yielded two runs in 2.0 innings pitched.

The Tigers return home to face No. 22 NC State in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Following a perfect weekend in the Tiger Invitational against Liberty University and Illinois, the Tigers were back at McWhorter Stadium Tuesday evening to face the Winthrop Eagles.

Valerie Cagle had an outstanding performance at bat, following an amazing pitching performance the day prior. The Tigers had three home runs in the first five innings, and defeated the Eagles 8-0. The win brought Clemson’s record to 18-6 on the season.

Clemson came out to an early lead when designated player, Valerie Cagle, hit a fly ball over left field. The Tigers’ offense would continue to dominate in the bottom of the second when catcher JoJo Hyatt singled to right field for an RBI, advancing Maddie Moore home for the Tigers, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Behind right-hander Brooke McCubbin, the Tigers had four strikeouts and only allowed one hit in the first three innings.

In the bottom of the third, Alia Logoleo stepped up to plate with Cammy Pereira on first and Marissa Guimbarda on second. Logoleo hit a home run to left field to give the Tigers a significant lead of 5-0.

It was Logoleo’s third home run of the season.

Clemson’s offense continued its home-run streak when once again Cagle hit a bomb out of McWhorter Stadium. It was Cagle’s second home run of the day and seventh on the season. The Tigers expanded their lead to 8-0.

“My second at-bat was a new pitcher, so I ended up popping out on the first pitch,” Cagle said following the win, “but using that to really go into the next at-bat was important because I knew that my swing was good on that one, and I was just a little early.”

After the third out in the top of the fifth, the Tigers won the game due to the run rule.

“Finally a game where we put it all together, and that’s nice to see heading into a tough weekend with Duke,” Clemson head coach John Rittman said following Tuesday’s win. “I’m looking forward to the challenge this weekend ahead of us.”

The Tigers are back in action this weekend in Durham, North Carolina as they face an ACC opponent, the Duke Blue Devils. Clemson is back home in McWhorter Stadium on Saturday, March 26 against the Louisville Cardinals.

Notre Dame 15 Years Tournament: No. 4 Seed – 2006-07 Irish

Towards the end of their nonconference schedule, the 2006-07 Irish had an incident that could have derailed their entire season.

Towards the end of their nonconference schedule, during which they went 12-1 and upset fourth-ranked Alabama, the 2006-07 Irish had an incident that could have derailed their entire season. Hours after a win over Rider, starting point guard Kyle McAlarney was arrested for marijuana possession, and he subsequently was suspended from Notre Dame. Rather than let losing such a prominent player become the turning point, the Irish continued to win games and ultimately finished with a 24-8 record and the 17th spot in the final rankings.

At first, the Irish kept their overall record respectable with a 6-5 start to Big East play. Then, they got hot, winning their final five games of the regular season to earn an 11-5 record in conference play, good for fourth in the standings and enough to make Mike Brey the Big East Coach of the Year. After picking up a win in the Big East tournament, the Irish went to March Madness as a sixth seed. That was as far as they got as they were upended by 11th-seeded Winthrop in the first round.

Russell Carter paced the Irish with 17.1 points a game. Colin Falls averaged 15.3 points a game, and Rob Kurz was a threat on both ends with 12.6 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game. Luke Harangody ended with an 11.2 scoring average, and McAlarney’s 5.4 assists a game remained the team high at season’s end, although replacement Tory Jackson wasn’t far off with 4.3.
