Celtics Lab 125.5: What can we expect from a Utah Jazz retool led by Danny Ainge and Will Hardy?

The two Celtics alumni are now helming a Jazz retool out west with Hardy’s hire as head coach on Tuesday.

With Juancho Hernangomez on the court, Will Hardy on the sidelines, and Danny Ainge running the front office, you would be forgiven if you mistook the Utah Jazz for the Boston Celtics. But the Bo Cruz connection aside, the hires of Ainge as the team’s CEO of basketball ops and more recently Hardy as head coach were no coincidence, the Salt Lake City-based franchise looking to steal a little of the mojo that helped Boston rise to the Finals contender they became in 2021-22.

What can the Jazz expect with so much Celtics brass running the show next season? Will Ainge be the right man for the job in Utah? How much will Boston and head coach Ime Udoka miss their assistant now that he’s been promoted?

Celtics Wire managing editor Justin Quinn appeared on Salt Lake City sports radio’s “KSL Unrivaled” show on 97.5 FM locally to talk about the Hardy hire, Ainge in charge of the Jazz’ retool and more.

Report: Celtics assistant Will Hardy to become next head coach of the Utah Jazz

Boston Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy will reportedly become the next head coach of the Utah Jazz.

According to a recent report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Boston Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy will become the next head coach of the Utah Jazz. Hardy cut his teeth in San Antonio, working for years as a video coordinator and later an assistant coach before joining Ime Udoka’s staff last season. Hardy will sign a five-year deal with Utah.

Danny Ainge, the former president of basketball operations for the Celtics, now serves as CEO for the Jazz and had been looking to replace long-time head coach Quin Snyder. Ainge reportedly scoured the NBA landscape before settling on Hardy. At just 34 years old, Hardy will be one of the youngest head coaches around.

Hardy will bring his many years of service down in San Antonio to Utah, perhaps spreading the no-nonsense Spurs mentality to the Jazz. As a top assistant with the Celtics, Hardy helped Boston build a championship contender in short order.

What happens next for the Jazz is unclear. Rumors surrounding defensive anchor Rudy Gobert and superstar Donovan Mitchell continue to swirl, and the club is looking to bounce back from yet another disappointing postseason. For now, though, Utah has one less question to answer. Congrats to Mr. Hardy.

Sam Cassell remains with Sixers after Jazz hire Will Hardy as coach

Sam Cassell will remain with the Philadelphia 76ers after missing out on the job with the Utah Jazz after they hired Will Hardy.

With the Utah Jazz looking to find a new coach to replace Quin Snyder after he stepped down from the job after eight seasons, Philadelphia 76ers assistant Sam Cassell was in the running to replace Snyder and that would have been a big blow to coach Doc Rivers’ staff.

Cassell is an important part of the Sixers as somebody who develops the players and he does a great job with them before and after games. His voice is always heard and he has been helpful in developing Tyrese Maxey.

On Tuesday, the Jazz decided they were going to hire Will Hardy from the Boston Celtics. Hardy was an assistant on Ime Udoka’s staff and helped the C’s make a run to the NBA Finals in 2022.

This is a good thing for Philadelphia, while an unfortunate event for Cassell who probably deserves a head coaching job at some point. He is a big piece of the Sixers and it would have been tough replacing the former NBA champion on the staff.

Report: Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy a leading candidate for Jazz head coach

The former Spurs assistant might be helming his own team come October.

The Boston Celtics might need to add a new face to the ranks of their assistant coaches if a certain current assistant coach finds himself the next head coach of the Utah Jazz.

The Salt Lake City Tribune‘s Andy Larsen reports Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy is among the leading candidates to replace longtime Jazz head coach Quin Snyder.

“It’s Celtics’ assistant Will Hardy that is considered by many league insiders to be a leading candidate at this point,” Larsen writes.

Given, as the SLC Tribune journalist notes, Utah CEO Danny Ainge’s tenure in Boston did not overlap with Hardy’s, so it is not a matter of personal relationships. It is more the body of work put together by Hardy with the Celtics and San Antonio Spurs that has given him the perceived inside track.

Larsen also reports Phoenix Suns assistant Kevin Young is another leading name from the pool of interviewees, which has included Celtics alumni Jerome Allen, Sam Cassell and Joe Mazzulla among a large pool of candidates.

Will Hardy considered as a leading candidate for Jazz head coaching job

The Utah Jazz may be in the midst of the widest coaching search in recent NBA memory. In all, according to reports, they’ve interviewed at least 15 candidates for the job once held by Quin Snyder. But three weeks into the process, it looks like the team’s decision-makers are favoring the younger assistant coaches in their search for a new leader. In particular, it’s Celtics’ assistant Will Hardy that is considered by many league insiders to be a leading candidate at this point.
