Haynes: Celtics senior consultant Jeff Van Gundy on shortlist for Bucks head coaching gig

The Milwaukee Bucks turmoil in their coaching staff is proving to be a very Boston Celtics-adjacent affair.

The Milwaukee Bucks turmoil in their coaching staff is proving to be a very Boston Celtics-adjacent affair. After news the team was letting go of first-year head coach (and Celtics alum) Adrian Griffin broke, word came around that the Bucks were considering a hire of former Boston head coach and current ESPN broadcaster Doc Rivers to replace him.

Now, another Celtics alumnus — this time current Boston senior consultant Jeff Van Gundy — is also being linked to the open head coaching gig in reporting from Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes. Noting that while Milwaukee is “zeroing in on Doc Rivers to replace Griffin,” the Bucks have “also formulated a short list of candidates that includes Jeff Van Gundy and Nate McMillan.”

“The plan for the Bucks is to act quickly on hiring the next head coach,” added Haynes, so we ought to know soon which (if any) former or current members of the Celtics organization might be helming Milwaukee for the rest of the season.

8 candidates to be the Bucks’ next head coach, including Doc Rivers

Who will the Bucks pick to coach them in a championship push?

The Milwaukee Bucks were a good team, but they probably weren’t great. And that was precisely Adrian Griffin’s problem.

News of Griffin’s firing in Milwaukee floored the NBA world on Tuesday. Not because folks were shocked the Bucks fired Griffin, who reportedly had issues with his scheme and some of his players. But because of the timing. At 30-13, Milwaukee is tied for the second-best record in the NBA at the halfway point of the regular season. There was no guarantee that standings success would last but, again, the second-best record in the league! It’s late January!

Nonetheless, the Bucks clearly have their eyes on someone who they believe can elevate their roster in the postseason. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard won’t be around forever. One of the rumored early favorites is Doc Rivers, who might be able to deliver on that promise.

Here’s a list of head coaching candidates for the Bucks to consider as they chase a second title with Antetokounmpo.

Van Gundy’s presence isn’t merely about assisting current Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, however. Instead, he is expected to provide a fresh set of eyes, a different perspective, and a deep understanding of basketball, derived from years of coaching and broadcasting. He will also be doing it at the G League level with the Maine Celtics as well as the parent club in Boston.

Why the Jeff Van Gundy hire is important for the Boston Celtics

What will Van Gundy do for Boston?

Long-time TV commentator and former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy, has officially joined the Boston Celtics as a ‘Senior Consultant’ for the 2023-24 season. Why is this important for the team, and what does it say about Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens‘ approach to the ball club’s campaign ahead?

The move has sparked discussions among basketball enthusiasts, and while it may not be the headline-grabbing hiring of a head coach or star player, it carries its own significance within the team’s framework. Unlike an assistant coach or a core staff member, he takes on the senior consultant position.

Still, how will this manifest in his work with the Boston and Maine Celtics at the G League level?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “First to the Floor” podcast took a long look at the hire on a recent episode; check it out above!

Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics on the hire of Jeff Van Gundy as a consultant

The Boston Celtics have unexpectedly welcomed former NBA head coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy to their team as a senior consultant.

The Boston Celtics have unexpectedly welcomed former NBA head coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy to their team as a senior consultant for the 2023-24 season, with Van Gundy set to split his time helping to advise not only the Celtics’ organization at the NBA level but also the Maine Celtics at the G League level.

Commenting on this addition to his franchise, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla remarked to the media at practice that he felt the hire was, “awesome” for the team a season after Mazzulla struggled in terms of assistant coaching depth as the team made a deep playoff push under a then-first year head coach.

“Any time you get to add like high character, high level, professional people, I think it’s a no brainer and so fortunate enough that he’s here, not just for the coaching staff, but for everybody,” he added.

Reporter Bobby Manning from CLNS Media shared his thoughts on this new inclusion after the Celtics’ practice at Auerbach Center on Friday; check it out above!

Mike Breen said he was saddened, surprised on losing Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy in ESPN cuts

You have to feel for Mike Breen here.

With ESPN letting go of commentators Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy, it leaves the network’s lead NBA announcer Mike Breen without his longtime sidekicks.

Speaking with The New York Post, Breen expressed his sadness over Jackson and Van Gundy being gone from the network.

They’ll reportedly be replaced by longtime NBA reporter Doris Burke and former NBA coach Doc Rivers.

It’ll be a tough transition for Breen, however, as he’d really developed a great chemistry with Jackson and Van Gundy in the years they’d all worked together.

You could tell in Breen’s words how much the partnership meant to him.

“It’s sad because we really thought we had something special and that’s going to be the thought going forward is that we were able to do it a lot longer than anybody ever did,” Breen told The Post. “It’s something we’ll all treasure, but we just wish it was a little bit longer.

“You don’t expect it, because it was such a great team and to have it completely broken up was a surprise.”

This is a tough turn of events for Breen, but Burke and Rivers definitely could replace Jackson and Van Gundy with success.

It’s just never easy to say goodbye to your on-air partners, so we definitely get where Breen is coming from with his words. NBA fans will see how the transition goes when ESPN’s game coverage returns this fall.

Jeff Van Gundy reportedly interviewed for an assistant gig with the Boston Celtics

“(The) Dallas (Mavericks) and Boston discussed roles with Van Gundy before beefing up their coaching staffs,” reports SI.

Former NBA head coach and ESPN broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy interviewed with the Boston Celtics about joining the team’s staff as an assistant coach according to recent reporting from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. Per the SI reporter, “Van Gundy, a cost-cutting casualty at ESPN last week, has been actively exploring a return to coaching.”

“(The) Dallas (Mavericks) and Boston discussed roles with Van Gundy before beefing up their coaching staffs,” added Mannix, referencing the Celtics bringing on former Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee, ex-Philadelphia 76ers assistant Sam Cassell and Duke assistant Amile Jefferson to help flesh out head coach Joe Mazzulla’s bench after a number of departures spanning two offseasons.

The Celtics might yet hire another assistant or two to round out their bench behind Mazzulla. For now, it seems Boston is done picking assistants of Van Gundy’s stature — look for younger prospects for any further Boston assistant hires, if any.

NBA fans are so sad that Jeff Van Gundy was reportedly part of ESPN layoffs

Jeff Van Gundy has reportedly been let go as part of ESPN’s layoffs.

Reports of more ESPN layoffs apparently include one beloved name for NBA fans.

Jeff Van Gundy, the former NBA coach who had become the leading voice for the NBA on ESPN alongside Mike Breen and Mark Jackson, was let go, according to a report from the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand.

JVG had been at the network for 16 years after a career that included coaching the New York Knicks for seven seasons and the Houston Rockets for four more through 2007.

NBA fans were crestfallen at the report that Van Gundy would no longer be heard on ESPN’s NBA broadcasts anymore:

NBA fans mocked Jeff Van Gundy’s weird rant after Kevin Love and Gabe Vincent hugged in Game 2

Jeff Van Gundy HATES hugs apparently.

NBA fans have come to expect some odd remarks from Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson during NBA Finals broadcasts. It’s gotten to the point where the commentary has turned into a meme.

But during Sunday’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Van Gundy couldn’t help but speak out against his longtime enemy … hugs. The man simply hates seeing basketball players hug each other.

After Heat forward Kevin Love missed a wide-open Gabe Vincent in the first half, Love caught up with Vincent to apologize. And as a show of support, Love shared a hug with Vincent. It could have been seen as a cool display of leadership and togetherness, but not for Van Gundy. He really went on a rant to criticize the hug.

This isn’t the first time Van Gundy has taken issue with hugs either. Back in 2018, he said that there aren’t true rivalries in the NBA anymore because players are so quick to exchange jerseys and hug each other after games.

He also didn’t like seeing players violate the no-hug policy amid the 2021 season’s COVID protocols.

Again, Van Gundy hates hugs. And NBA fans mocked how vocally anti-hug Van Gundy was in Game 2.
