The Sox have gotten off to a rough start in what is expected to be a long season. It got worse when they lost OF Luis Robert to the 10-day IL with a strained adductor muscle Friday. They were swept in 4 games by the Kansas City Royals over the weekend and are last with 1.8 runs per game and 27th with a .196 team batting average. The Sox haven’t announced a starter Monday, but they’re expected to recall someone from the minors.

The Guardians were also dealt a tough blow as RHP Shane Bieber was lost for the season requiring Tommy John surgery. They have won 4 straight, though, and 7 of 9 to open the campaign. The Guardians, who will be playing in their home opener, had an extra day of rest Sunday after they were rained out against the Minnesota Twins.

The Guardians are tied for 4th in MLB with 5.9 R/game and allow the fewest at 2.3 R/game. I look for those trends to continue Monday. If the Sox indeed roll with the lefty, the Guardians are hitting .323 with a .446 slugging percentage and .841 OPS in 65 ABs against left-handed pitchers.

There’s too much juice on the ML, though. PASS and look to the spread.

Run line/Against the spread

All of Cleveland’s 7 wins have been multi-run winners. With a rested bullpen, the GUARDIANS -1.5 (+105) is the best bet on the board Monday.

Over/Under

The weather shouldn’t impact the game much tonight, as it’s projected to be 66 degrees with just a 5-mph breeze blowing out to right-center.

Considering the splits for each team in this situation (home vs. away), there isn’t much reasoning to bet on Chicago to go into Cleveland and win, being 18 games under .500 on the road.

However, with Clevinger, it should keep things close though. Nonetheless, I’d pass on both sides of the equation here and look for better value on the run line and/or total.

Run line/Against the spread

LEAN WHITE SOX +1.5 (-150).

The White Sox haven’t been great on the road, but they have been great against the Guardians this season. Chicago is 40-35 on the run line as an underdog, and Cleveland is 23-37 on the run line as a favorite.

Despite the juice, those records make this playable. Clevinger has also had a great season and dominated the Guardians the last time he was on the mound. Chicago is 20-13 on the run line in its division as well, whereas Cleveland is 17-16.

Kopech has always been a guy that threw hard, but you could count on him to walk 2 hitters a start, but he has not done so in 2 of his last 3 starts. We’ll need him to get 2 outs into the 6th inning, and he has gone 6 innings in 3 of 4 starts and did so in his last one against Cleveland.

Take MICHAEL KOPECH OVER 16.5 OUTS RECORDED (-110).

Run line/Against the spread

Each game has been decided by more than 1 run between these clubs this year, and they haven’t had a 1-run game in the last 12 meetings. So we’ll use this as a de facto moneyline bet and LEAN WHITE SOX -1.5 (+190) for a chance to nearly double up.

We cashed all 3 bets here Monday, and we’ll look for the same success Tuesday. Cease has been out of whack with a 6.19 ERA over his last 7 starts and the White Sox aren’t scoring runs. The Guardians strike out the fewest times per game in the league (7.11), and that’s what Cease relies most on.  They’ll survive the tide and get to the bullpen once he’s out.

However, I like CEASE OVER 17.5 OUTS RECORDED (-110) instead of the moneyline. He has gone 6 innings in his last 2 starts overall and his last 3 against Cleveland. The lack of K’s will keep his pitch count low enough to stick around.

Money line

The WHITE SOX (-155) are the play here, as this is not an even pitching matchup. The veteran right-hander Lynn has been absolutely on fire lately, and he is opposed by a guy making just his 2nd-career start. That’s not a recipe for success for the first-place Guardians.

Run line/Against the spread

The WHITE SOX -1.5 (+110) are worth playing on the run line, basically as a play against Gaddis, who was tattooed by the Astros in his first MLB start over a month ago.

Cleveland is due to get cooled off, too, coming off its 2nd consecutive 3-game sweep. The runs will be hard to come by against the red-hot Lynn.

Over/Under

UNDER 8.5 (-120) is a risky play with a rookie on the bump for Cleveland. However, the good news for Under bettors is that Lynn hasn’t allowed a run in September — he’s been absolutely red hot. In addition, the wind is blowing in directly from center field into the face of the batters at a 6-9 mph clip, keeping the ball in the park.

It’s possible that Chicago steals this one as Cueto was awesome against Houston last time out. However, I think Bieber holds it down at home. Cleveland has scored 4 or more runs in 7 of 9 games, and that’s what it will take to get it done Saturday.

I’m not confident enough in the Guardians offense, despite picking a 4-2 win to throw down on the RL. One way we can go is to read into Bieber’s last 2 starts at home against the White Sox. He allowed 3 hits in 9 innings (July 12) and 4 hits in 6 innings (April 20).

So, let’s go with WHITE SOX UNDER 4.5 HITS FIRST 5 INNINGS (-145) for a HALF UNIT.

Over/Under

The White Sox-Guardians games Monday and Tuesday were rained out, which led to Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Chicago won its first three series, all 2-1, at the Detroit Tigers Opening Day weekend and then at home versus the Seattle Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays last week.

Cleveland rode a 4-game winning streak into its previous series with San Francisco, but was swept at home last weekend by the Giants and outscored 16-4 in the series.

LEAN to the GUARDIANS (-140) mostly because Bieber is on the mound,  but this is a little pricey considering the White Sox (+115) are one of the best teams in the American League.

However, Chicago has lost five straight games as road underdogs with Keuchel on the bump. In Keuchel’s only start last season in Progressive Field, the Guardians had a 50% hard-hit rate but just a. .222 BABIP.

If you can find a price for Cleveland’s first 5-inning ML then I’d take that since Bieber is one of the best starters in baseball and Keuchel is a middle-of-the-rotation guy.

But, I LEAN GUARDIANS (-140) for the full game.

Run line/Against the spread

LEAN to the GUARDIANS -1.5 (+145) because their lineup should rough up Keuchel and Cleveland’s bullpen is good enough to hold any lead Bieber turns over to them.

Furthermore, the Guardians are 48-32 RL in division games since the beginning of last season while the White Sox are just 37-42 RL versus divisional foes and 12-15 RL as road underdogs.

My hesitation with Cleveland’s RL is Chicago has a MLB top-5 lineup and bullpen and I’d prefer the Over as my favorite play in the White Sox-Guardians.

Over/Under

BET the OVER 7.5 (-122) for 1 unit because the Guardians are 5-1 O/U in Bieber’s last 6 starts versus teams with a winning record and there’s some logic to fading the market betting the Under with Bieber is on the mound.

Also, 7 or more runs have been scored in 7 of Keuchel’s last 9 starts dating back to last year.

Lastly, Bieber and Keuchel’s ERAs are higher when starting with 6 or more rest days than any other rest split, Bieber actually has a worse home ERA whereas Keuchel pitches worse on the road throughout his career.

The OVER 7.5 (-122) is my favorite wager in this game.
