Lady Vols tie season-high for home runs in a game at Western Carolina.

No. 14 Tennessee notched a midweek victory on the road Wednesday, defeating Western Carolina, 9-1, at Catamount Softball Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

The Lady Vols (27-12, 8-6 SEC) won the game in five innings and hit five home runs against Western Carolina (15-24, 2-7 SoCon).

Ivy Davis and McKenna Gibson each homered twice and drove in three runs against the Catamounts.

Kiki Milloy also had a solo home run and a two-run single.

The Lady Vols led 2-0 in the third inning before scoring three more runs in the fourth and tallying four more times in the fifth.

Erin Edmoundson (15-4) pitched a complete game. She surrendered one run and two hits, while posting nine strikeouts.

Western Carolina scored on a home run by Bailey Treadwell in the fifth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Blade Tidwell made his season debut against Western Carolina after experiencing shoulder stiffness.

Tidwell pitched one inning and recorded two strikeouts. He surrendered one earned run and two hits.

He entered the contest in the sixth inning with Tennessee leading, 8-0.

Tennessee entered the matchup with Western Carolina ranked No. 1 in six polls, including the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll.

The Vols will play at No. 5 Vanderbilt, Friday-Sunday, for its third Southeastern Conference series.

Tennessee is the sixth team to make it through the first two weeks of Southeastern Conference play unbeaten since the league went to a 30-game conference schedule in 1996.

No.1 Tennessee defeated Western Carolina, 11-1, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Wednesday.

Tennessee (24-1, 6-0 SEC) recorded 11 hits and took advantage of two errors by the Catamounts (11-14, 0-0 SoCon) before an announced crowd of 4, 607 fans.

Tennessee had two home runs in the first inning. Christian Moore led off the frame with a solo home run. Drew Gilbert added a two-run home run in the inning.

The Vols added three more runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Cortland Lawson to make it 4-0. Luc Lipcius and Gilbert both came home later in the inning on a Western Carolina error.

Moore had a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Blake Burke added a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Moore went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and one run. Gilbert had two hits, three runs scored and drove in two. Burke finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Will Mabrey (2-0) earned the victory, pitching 1.1 innings with four strikeouts.

Tennessee adds Western Carolina to 2021 schedule.

Tennessee’s reserve rugby team has added a friendly match to its 2021 fall schedule.

The Vols will host Western Carolina Saturday at Tennessee Rugby Park. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. EDT.

Tennessee’s reserve team defeated Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, 27-12, on Sept. 4. The reserves won at Cincinnati, 39-5, on Sept. 5.

Matches at Kennesaw State on Sept. 18 were canceled.

On Oct. 2, the Vols will host Kentucky in Knoxville.

UT is slated to host Clemson on Oct. 16. Tennessee travels to Alabama (Oct. 23) and South Carolina (Oct. 30).

Georgia plays at Tennessee on Nov. 6 to conclude regular season play.

The University of Tennessee has fielded a rugby team since 1970. The Vols play home matches at Tennessee Rugby Park.
