Broncos WR Courtland Sutton: ‘We can compete with anybody’

“If we go out there and perform the way we know how to perform … we can compete with anybody,” Broncos WR Courtland Sutton said.

The Denver Broncos (5-3) will face their toughest test of the season thus far when they go on the road to take on the Baltimore Ravens (5-3) on Sunday.

The Broncos are considered big underdogs, and team captain Courtland Sutton wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We’re a team that can contend in this division,” Sutton said Wednesday. “I think that a lot of people write us off based upon the personnel that we have on our team, and that’s completely fine. We love that. We love going into these games being underdogs — as I said last week, going into these games with people not having as much confidence in us being successful as we do in ourselves.

“We know that if we go out there and perform the way we know how to perform, execute and minimize the negative plays and the things that can hurt us, we feel like we can compete with anybody.”

Denver knows Sunday’s showdown won’t be an easy matchup, but pulling off an upset win would be huge for the program.

“You learn a lot about yourself and about your team [in this kind of game],” quarterback Bo Nix said. “Ultimately, going on the road, competing and winning a game like this [would be] special for an organization, too. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to be ready.”

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on CBS (TV broadcast map).

Dan Campbell, Lions ‘fired up’ to play in the bad weather in Green Bay

Dan Campbell, Lions ‘fired up’ to play in the bad weather in Green Bay in Week 9, with rain and cold winds in the forecast

Sunday’s weather forecast for Green Bay is befitting the turn to early November on the calendar. High temps of around 52 degrees are expected, with a 100 percent chance of what the Weather Channel deems “steady rainfall” throughout the afternoon, with a breeze of 15-20 MPH blowing off the western shores of Lake Michigan.

Those are the expected conditions waiting for the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The trip to Lambeau Field to face the Packers represents the team’s first taste of the outdoors in the 2024 season, and it will be chilly, wet and breezy.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell is ready for the weather, and so are his players.

This was Campbell’s opening statement to his pre-practice press conference on Friday. It’s every bit as energetic as it reads, too,

“This is – there again, just reiterating how exciting this is, to be able to play these types of games, these big-time games, environment, division game on the road, at a place that’s – it’s one of those things that God created, it’s where football began a little bit, those types of things. So anyway, we’re looking forward to this.

We’ll be in the elements, which is great. This is like one of those – you hope for this. I think we’ll be all-white, so we’ll have the grass stains and everything rolling, man, it’s going to be good old football, the way it’s meant to be played. So, excited, great opponent, but our guys are fired up, man, they’re looking forward to this.”

Campbell’s Lions have won in their last two trips to Green Bay, though in different weather conditions. In 2023, they played on Thursday Night Football in Week 4 and drew a lovely fall evening at 64 degrees with low wind and no rain.

One year earlier, it was a frigid January afternoon in Week 18 when the Lions rolled into the frozen tundra and ended Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Packers by beating Green Bay and preventing them from making the postseason. The game-time temperature was 21 degrees that day, with occasional spits of light snow flurries and wind gusts.

Those positive experiences might help explain Campbell’s affinity for playing in the elements.

“I just – I love the good throwback games. It’s good to get one every once in a while,” Campbell stated.

Contenders or pretenders: the upcoming Steelers’ two weeks of doom

While the Pittsburgh Steelers are 6-2 on the season, their extremely difficult matchups in both Weeks 10 and 11 are their proving grounds.

While fans of the 6-2 Pittsburgh Steelers are understandably on cloud nine after the recent success of the team, they may need to temper their expectations, at least until Week 12.

The Steelers face the 6-2 Washington Commanders on the road in Week 10 and the 5-3 Baltimore Ravens at home in Week 11. These two games, coming off the Week 9 bye, could set the stage for an impressive playoff run or could highlight the Steelers as potential pretenders.

While momentum is leaning toward the Steelers being closer to Super Bowl caliber than most other AFC teams, the lack of competitive teams Pittsburgh has faced through the first eight weeks cannot be ignored. Their opponents thus far have a underwhelming combined record of 27 wins and 35 losses.

If the Steelers can defeat the Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens in Weeks 10 and 11, confidence in their postseason aspirations will be completely justified. Similar to the Ravens, Pittsburgh should attempt to make a strong push for additional talent at the wide receiver position at the trade deadline, especially if the team hopes to stay competitive in the latter half of the season.

Bills vs. Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 9

Bills vs. Dolphins: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 9

The Buffalo Bills (6-2) will host the Miami Dolphins (2-5) in their upcoming Week 9 matchup.

In this divisional clash, the games within the game will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Dolphins contest:

Keon Coleman/Amari Cooper vs. Miami CBs

Getty Images

The Dolphins have one of the better cornerback duos in the NFL. Jalen Ramsey is still performing like one of the best in the NFL and Kendall Fuller is no slouch either. According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey grades as the 13th-best corner in the league while Fuller grades 42nd-best.

They are going to make the Bills’ boundary receivers work for their catches. Insert Coleman and Cooper. We know what Cooper is capable of at wideout, and in the last couple of weeks, Coleman has emerged as well. These two can make catches with the best of them, and with Ramsey and Fuller in coverage, they might need to come down with some contested catches.

De’Von Achane vs. Bills’ front seven

Imagn Images

Running back De’Von Achane is performing well despite Miami’s recent offensive struggles. He has averaged 87 rushing yards and almost seven yards per carry in their last two games. And, when the Bills visited Miami in Week 2, he was the lone bright spot for the Dolphins on offense.

In Week 2 he accounted for 165 yards from scrimmage and scored their only touchdown. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and caught all seven of his targets.

The Bills have had an up-and-down season defending the run. They’ve had some games where they can’t defend it and some games where they can. In all, they rank middle of the pack in the NFL, allowing 120 yards per game on the ground. Last week, they completely shut down one of the better runners in the league, Kenneth Walker III, so it will be interesting to see which form of the Bills’ run defense shows up in Week 9.

Bills offensive line vs. Dolphins defensive line

Despite losing standout edge defender Jaelen Phillips to a season-ending injury earlier this year, the Dolphins still have a solid group on the defensive line. Calais Campbell, described by PFF as an “ageless wonder,” is still wreaking havoc on the interior of the line. Zach Sieler is another guy who can move bodies on the interior, but he is questionable with a facial injury.

On the edge, Emmanuel Ogbah and 2024 first-round pick Chop Robinson have shown flashes at times. The Dolphins’ defensive line currently ranks 13th-best in the NFL according to PFF. They have dropped seven spots in the rankings after back-to-back disappointing efforts.

The Bills offensive line is looking elite at the moment, coming off of a one-sack performance against the Seattle Seahawks. They have given up only ten total sacks in 2024 which ranks best in the NFL. According to PFF, the offensive line as a whole currently ranks seventh-best. There will be a lot of talent fighting in the trenches when the Bills are on offense.

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Dolphins in Week 9

3 keys to a Bills victory vs. the Dolphins in Week 9

The Buffalo Bills will play the Miami Dolphins at home at Highmark Stadium in Week 9.

The Bills (6-2) are looking to build on a dominant stretch of football. They’ve blown out both the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks in the past two weeks. The Dolphins (2-5) are looking to turn their season around after losing five of their last six.

Buffalo is favored by six points in this one. Miami will be looking to avenge their Week 2 loss to the Bills, so Buffalo will need to execute their game plan to pick up their seventh win of the year.

With that, here are three keys to a Bills win in Week 9:

Keep spreading it around on offense

Getty Images

One thing that has worked in the Bills’ favor in 2024 is that defenses don’t necessarily know what to expect from them. It used to be a lot of receiver Stefon Diggs through the air and quarterback Josh Allen’s legs on the ground. Now, anyone on the offense can heat up at any moment. They have leaned into the “everybody eats” concept, and it has worked wonders for the most part.

In Week 2 against the Dolphins, the Bills had five different ball carriers and they targeted nine different players in the passing game. Given that it was early in the year, the Dolphins weren’t sure what to expect. Now, with the addition of wide receiver Amari Cooper, Buffalo added another layer of unpredictability. Not only is it good for team morale if they lean into using everybody on offense, but it will keep the Miami defense guessing.

Limit chunk plays

USA TODAY Sports

Although the Dolphins’ offense has struggled mightily in recent weeks, with QB Tua Tagovailoa under center, Miami can put a ton of stress on the defense. They still possess an absurd amount of speed at the skill positions. They have a handful of running backs and pass catchers that can take one touch to the house at any moment.

Linebackers and cornerbacks especially will have to stay disciplined and not fall for some of the eye candy that the Dolphins offense has shown in the past. Also, although it is hard to get hands on some of these guys, tackling needs to be consistent. Having sound tackling from the defense, much like last week against Seattle, will limit big gains from their speedsters.

Throw off Tagovailoa’s timing

Getty Images

Tagovailoa is a pure rhythmic and anticipatory thrower of the football. He likes to get the ball out quickly and throw it into passing windows. They are at their best when he has a clean pocket and can just take a quick drop back and get rid of it. What can throw off the timing of that offense is giving some unusual looks that make him pat the ball for an extra half-second.

The Bills don’t blitz much as a team, and they probably won’t completely change their identity based on just one opponent. But, a few more blitzes and some creativity in the front seven would go a long way. Linemen dropping into coverage, stunts, and blitzing/bluffing from linebackers could cause problems for the timing of the Dolphins’ offense. Getting hands up on the defensive line will also make it harder for Tagovailoa to navigate some of the passing lanes.

Lions rule two defensive players out vs. Packers

Lions coach Dan Campbell ruled two defensive players out vs. Packers, including starting defensive end Josh Paschal

The injury woes keep piling up for the Detroit Lions defense. Detroit head coach Dan Campbell declared two Lions defenders out for Sunday’s game with the Packers in Green Bay ahead of Friday’s practice session.

Campbell ruled out projected starting defensive end Josh Paschal in his coaching press conference on Friday morning. Paschal is dealing with an issue related to a recent post-cancer screening. The third-year vet dealt with cancer during his college career at Kentucky. Paschal will miss his second consecutive game.

Campbell downplayed any long-term concerns about Paschal’s condition.

“He’ll be out. He and Malcolm (Rodriguez) will both be out,’ Campbell said. “But no, nothing long-term, which is great news, and we’re hopeful we’ll get him back next week.”

Rodriguez being ruled out is not a surprise. The reserve linebacker was carted off with a knee injury in Sunday’s home win over the Tennessee Titans and has not practiced throughout the week.

Broncos vs. Ravens: 5 things to watch for on Sunday

Here are five storylines to watch for when the Ravens host the Broncos on Sunday.

The Baltimore Ravens (5-3) are set to host the Denver Broncos (5-3) in Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday afternoon. Here are five storylines to keep an eye on going into the AFC showdown.

1. Final injury report: Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (back/knee) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, and Broncos safety P.J. Locke (thumb) and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) are also sidelined. If Jackson can’t play, Josh Johnson would be the next man up for Baltimore. Devon Key is Locke’s backup and Alex Palczewski is McGlinchey’s backup. The final injury reports for both teams will be released on Friday.

2. Denver’s defense vs. Derrick Henry: Historically, Henry has not had as much success against the Broncos as other teams. In four career games against Denver, Henry has 77 carries for 239 yards (a modest 3.10 yards per carry average) and no touchdowns. The Broncos have never faced Henry in this Ravens offense, however, and the star running back is on pace for the second 2,000-yard season of his career.

3. Last game before the trade deadline: The NFL’s trade deadline is Tuesday and it’s possible that Sunday could mark the final time a player suits up for the Broncos. One player in particular to keep an eye on is pass rusher Baron Browning, who has been frequently mentioned as a trade candidate in recent weeks.

4. Containing Lamar Jackson: If he does play, Jackson will be one of the toughest tests Denver’s defense faces this season. Jackson has completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,099 yards with 17 touchdowns against just two interceptions this fall. The two-time NFL MVP also has 501 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. The Broncos’ defense will need to keep him in the pocket and count on the secondary to win their matchups in coverage.

5. Bo Nix vs. Ravens secondary: Coming off the best game of his career, Nix will face a Baltimore defense that has allowed 291.4 passing yards per game, most in the NFL. Nix downplayed that stat this week by noting that the Ravens build leads and force teams to throw against them, but he didn’t mention the fact that teams have been able to throw against Baltimore. On paper, this is a good matchup for Nix, and the offense will need to count on him as the Ravens allow a league-low 69.9 rushing yards per game. If the Broncos are going to get an upset win on the road, Nix will need to have a big day.

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on CBS (TV broadcast map). Playing on the road, Denver is considered a big underdog in Week 9.

Bills back kicker Tyler Bass with latest roster move

Bills back kicker Tyler Bass with latest roster move

The Buffalo Bills showed they still have faith in kicker Tyler Bass.

The team announced on Thursday that they have released kicker Lucas Havrisik from the practice squad. Havrisik was brought in to compete with Bass in practice just two weeks ago. It turns out there wasn’t much of a competition.

In nine career games in the NFL (all in 2023), Havrisik is a 75% percent kicker, having connected on 15-of-20 field goal attempts. He is also 19-of-22 on extra points. Not ideal numbers to start his career.

So, for now at least, Bass remains the guy for the Bills.

So far in 2024, Bass has made 12-of-15 field goals (80%) which is good for 30th in the NFL. He is 26-of-28 on extra points (92.9%) which ranks 32nd.

With the open spot on the practice squad after the release of Havrisik, the team brought back wide receiver Deon Cain.

Cain rejoins the Bills after being released from the team this preseason. He appeared in 15 games across 2019 and 2020 and has just nine career catches.

Learn more about Cain below:
