Washington State vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

This hasn’t been the Washington State offense it was supposed to be – it’s been good, but it’s not its normal dominant passing self. That’s fine because the defense is getting it done.

So the Cougars couldn’t slow down Oregon or keep USC off the board – almost no one can. The D has been solid against the run – no one has hit 200 yards yet – and the secondary is holding up well enough in a bend-but-don’t-break sort of way.

And yes, the offense is fine. It’s scoring when it gets the chance, Cameron Ward is working around the interceptions, and everything should click a little better against an Oregon State defense that doesn’t bring the pass rush.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Oregon State Will Win

Sorry to get mystical, but there’s something about this Oregon State team.

It got rocked by Utah in Salt Lake City, but it gave USC all it could handle and it found a way to get it done late against Fresno State and Stanford – pulling off a miracle against the Cardinal.

The defense isn’t doing anything too special, but it’s holding up okay against the run – even if it’s giving up 4.6 yards per carry – and the secondary is doing just enough late in games to stay alive.

Washington State doesn’t have a running game to worry about, the O doesn’t stay on the field long enough – Oregon State should have the ball for 35 minutes – and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State should be able to hold up late.

The Oregon State quarterback situation is still a question mark with starter Chance Nolan questionable at best. He was out against Stanford, but Ben Gulbranson got the job done in the thriller.

The difference this week will be the pressure no matter who’s at quarterback – Washington State can get to the quarterback a whole lot better than the Cardinal can.

USC vs Utah Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The Trojans have a way of scoring when they need to.

They might not be all that consistent, and they always seem to leave points and plays on the field, but when it’s time to get the job done everything starts to work.

Caleb Williams makes a few throws, the running game comes up with a few nice dashes, and then Mario Williams or Jordan Addison makes a touchdown grab and all is right with the world.

This is hardly a perfect team, but think of it this way – it’s 6-0. When was the last time USC started a season 6-0?

2006.

So for all the jabs, and all the flaws, and all those wanting to dog the hype, Lincoln Riley is doing just fine so far.

Williams finally threw his first interception of the season two weeks ago against Arizona State, which happened to be the team’s only turnover. The team is +15 in turnover margin, No. 1 in the nation in sacks, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Utah Will Win

Utah is going to run all over the USC defense.

The Trojans have a way of playing up or down to the competition, but the one thing it’s struggling to do against everyone is stop the ground game.

ASU is the only team that didn’t get to four yards per carry, and just about everyone else flirted with five yards per pop.

Utah might have lost to UCLA last week – it still ran for 192 yards and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. The ground attack comes up with over five a try, the passing game is consistent, and it might be just that simple.

Run, rely on the big guys on the defensive front, and keep USC from running for 200 yards because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida and UCLA were the only two teams to run on Utah for over 200 yards. Those were the two losses. Those were both on the road, and Utah is a nastier team at home.

Going back to early 2017 against Arizona, Utah is 0-10 when allowing 200 or more. USC was able to get to 200 yards on the ground against Rice and Fresno State, but that’s not going to happen in this.

USC will be great. The offense will come up with its share of big plays, Williams will be fantastic, and there will be times when it all works. And then it’ll be undone by run defense that will get steamrolled over in key moments.

Neither team will get the turnovers they’re hoping for and relying on. It’ll come down to control, and the team that’s the best in the Pac-12 in time of possession will have it.

The Ute offense will keep 13 and his amazing weapons on the sidelines way too often.

Clemson vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

The offense is getting more consistent.

The passing game was hardly sharp in the win over Boston College, but it didn’t need to be great to pull that off. The O is hitting the 200-yard mark through the air every week, the running game has find a nice groove to balance things out, and the turnovers have been kept to a bare minimum.

Florida State’s defense is able to hold up – it did a nice job of keeping the Wake Forest machine from going crazy – but the O has stalled.

The Seminoles have to get to 400 yards of total offense to pull this off. It didn’t get there against LSU and almost lost late, and it didn’t get there in the losses to Wake Forest and NC State.

Clemson gave up over 400 to Wake Forest in the crazy firefight – and won – but that’s it from a next-level talented bunch allowing just 320 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Florida State Will Win

Can Jordan Travis pick apart the Clemson secondary?

The Tiger defensive backs get a bad rap because everyone saw the Wake Forest passing game go off against them, but they’ve been solid against everyone else. However, Travis has the ability to get going with the midrange throws, and he’s deadly when he gets into a rhythm.

The Seminoles have to move fast. They can’t give the Clemson defensive front time to be disruptive in the backfield, they’ve got to get their backs on the outside in a hurry where they can rip off yards in chunks like they did against NC State, and they have to keep pressing.

Yeah, DJ Uiagalelei has been good, and the Clemson passing attack has been better, but Florida State – even with a loss to Wake Forest on the slate – is still No. 1 in the ACC in pass defense, the pass rush is good enough, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is starting to find its swagger.

It might not be at the level it was a few years ago, but it’s grinding its way through, the offense is at least decent – that’s a huge step after 2021 – and the defense is doing the rest.

The secondary will have a few problems against Travis and the FSU passing game, but the linebackers will keep the big runs to a minimum.

The Clemson gameplan will continue. Be consistent, keep on finishing off drives, and control the lines. Florida State will be great in the first quarter, but the steadiness of the Tigers will come through.

Nebraska vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

Did the Huskers just break the hex?

After years of discovering new and exciting ways to lose close games, Nebraska caught the break it never, ever, ever got under Scott Frost with a late penalty on Rutgers helping the cause in a 14-13 win.

Combine that with the win over Indiana and your 2022 Nebraska Cornhuskers are on the top of the Big Ten West standings.

They’re starting to play okay under Mickey Joseph. The running game isn’t doing much outside of whatever cool run Anthony Grant is able to come up with, but the passing attack has been okay and the defense is starting to hold up better.

Indiana and Rutgers don’t have Purdue’s passing game, but the Husker secondary was strong over the last two weeks – the three interceptions against the Scarlet Knights helped – and should come up with a few takeaways in this.

The Boilermakers have turned it over eight times in the last three games – Nebraska might need those mistakes, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Purdue Will Win

It’s not like Nebraska’s offense has taken off.

It’s been okay through the air, and it’s not all that bad overall, but it’s good for two turnovers a game, the ground attack really doesn’t do enough averaging 2.4 yards per carry over the last two games, and the line is way too leaky in pass protection.

Purdue’s defensive front is holding up well against the run. There aren’t enough plays in the backfield, but it’s okay on third downs and is coming off two pitched gems in wins over Minnesota and Maryland on the road.

As long as the offense can chill a bit on the turnovers – there are way too many fumbles for a team that doesn’t run all that much – it should be able to control the game throughout with midrange passes.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This is a huge moment for Nebraska.

The two straight wins were nice, but getting by Purdue would be different. The Boilermakers are two plays away from being 6-0, got a strong win over Maryland, and were brilliant against Minnesota.

It’s going to take them a little while to put this away.

Effort has never been a problem for the Huskers, and it’ll show in a great start and an early lead. The Purdue offense will finally start to click midway through the third quarter with two good scoring drives, and the momentum will roll from there.

Arkansas vs BYU Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

Is KJ Jefferson back?

The star Hog quarterback was out for the Mississippi State game after suffering a head injury against Alabama, but he’s expected to give it a go.

Let’s just say the Hog offense wasn’t the same without him in the 40-17 loss to Mississippi State.

It was fine – it cranked up 483 yards – but the two turnovers and struggles to score turned what should’ve been a good fight into a blowout the other way.

Jefferson is dangerous on the move, Raheim Sanders is one of the SEC’s best backs, and it should all work against a BYU run defense that got ripped up by  Notre Dame last week after allowing over 200 yards to Utah State the week before.

The Cougar line isn’t getting into the backfield enough, it’s having problems against the run, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why BYU Will Win

Welcome to Provo, Hogs. There’s no way to describe it other than it’s a very, very unique place for big name teams to visit.

Between the setting, the energy, the altitude of 4,500 feet, and the team that comes out of the tunnel, BYU has one of the toughest home field advantages in college football.

Baylor this year, Arizona, Utah, Arizona State last year, USC in 2019 – BYU has a way of saving its biggest performances for the houseguests.

This is a tough Cougar team that likes to get the ground game going and control the tempo if it can, but this will be all about QB Jaren Hall and the passing game that fizzled hard in Vegas against the Irish.

Before that Hall was on fire hitting close to 70% of his passes with 260 yards or more in every game. Now he gets to hit up an Arkansas secondary that’s allowing over 300 yards per outing.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rough run for Arkansas.

It went to Arlington, Texas and lost a heartbreaker to Texas A&M in the final moments, came back home and dealt with Alabama, went to Starkville and got dropped by 23 to Mississippi State, and now it has has to make the trip to Utah.

College teams are resilient and the Hogs have the lines to do more than just hold up, but BYU isn’t the place to go when you could use a little bit of a breather.

Arkansas is the better team with the better talent, but BYU’s lines, run defense, and Hall will be far sharper and more effective than they all were last week.

It’ll be close throughout, but BYU will take over the fourth quarter with third down conversion after third down conversion to grind out the final drive for the win.

Maryland at Indiana Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

The passing game is rolling.

The offense played well in the win over Michigan State, Taulia Tagovailoa is hitting over 70% of his passes, and it should all work against an Indiana defense that’s struggling way too much in the secondary.

Michigan’s JJ McCarthy hit 78% of his throws last week against the IU D, everyone on the Hoosier slate got to 200 yards through the air, and three of the last four teams went over 300 yards.

Tagovailoa doesn’t crank up too many deep shots, but he’s hitting the midrange ones. That’s good enough against the IU D.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Indiana Will Win

The pass rush is able to be a bother in the Maryland backfield.

The defense might be struggling, but the pressure should be there against a Terp O line that’s okay for the running game and hit-or-miss against teams that make a big commitment to get to Tagovailoa.

Will IU QB Connor Bazelak get enough time to work? He’s averaging well over 200 yards per game, he’s doing a decent job of limiting the mistakes, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There’s not enough of a Hoosier running game to help the cause, and Bazelak isn’t accurate enough.

The Maryland secondary will give up plenty of yards, but Bazelak doesn’t take a ton of deep shots and he’s having a hard time simply hitting half of his throws.

The Terps will have their problems early as they stall a bit too much, but they’ll be fine as the game goes on. This will come down to the passing game, and they’re much, much better at that.

Auburn vs Ole Miss Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The pressure is off.

Auburn is 3-3, the schedule ahead – Arkansas, at Mississippi State, Texas A&M, WKU, at Alabama – should make getting to six wins and a bowl game almost impossible with the way the team is playing, head coach Bryan Harsin is all but fired, the base is already fitting Hugh Freeze with a visor, and …

There’s still talent here.

The Tigers gave LSU a push, beat Missouri, and the season certainly isn’t over as long as the defense can come up with a few huge performances.  The 42-10 loss to Georgia was an outlier – that’s Georgia in a bad mood.

The run defense has been solid against just about everyone else, the offense should be able to at least shorten the game against an Ole Miss team that keeps the ball for around 24 minutes per game, and again, the pressure is off because the expectations are so low.

Ole Miss might be 6-0, but it came this close to dropping that thriller to Kentucky, and there was that other great win against … uhhhh … Vanderbilt? Troy? Georgia Tech?

Flip the Ole Miss and Auburn schedules the Tigers are probably 5-1 and the Rebels probably have two losses.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Ole Miss has itself some killers in the offensive backfield.

The 1-2 rushing punch of Quinshon Judkins and Zach Evans has been all but unstoppable, QB Jaxson Dart is settling into the gig – he’s coming off a 448-yard passing day against Vandy – and Auburn can’t keep up with any of it.

The Tiger offense just isn’t working. It can’t move the chains, it’s not getting enough out of the ground game, and it hasn’t scored more than 17 points in a month.

The Ole Miss offensive front has been outstanding, the defense is allowing just 14.5 points per game, and those skill parts have the ability to turn the lights out by the end of the first quarter if everything goes right.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Again, it’s not like Ole Miss has dealt with anything nasty yet. It’s not like it’s playing in the SEC West or anyth …

Here we go. Six games, all against SEC West teams, and this is almost certainly going to be the easiest of the bunch.

Auburn will score in this. It’ll come up with a few grinding drives to make this watchable for a little while, and then Ole Miss will go Ole Miss with two touchdown drives in a hiccup to put this out of reach.

Arizona vs Washington Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Didn’t that used to be Washington?

The Huskies looked like one of the nation’s best teams as they rolled through Michigan State and Stanford before having to leave Seattle.

At UCLA – loss. Fine, that’s a good Bruin team. At Arizona State – loss. Very much NOT okay.

The Huskies haven’t been as strong running the ball and the pass defense is struggling, but more than anything else the defensive front is getting pounded on.

UCLA and ASU both averaged close to five yards per carry with the two best running days of the year against the Dawgs. Arizona prefers to get the passing game, going, but it’s doing a decent job on the ground averaging well over four yards per carry.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Washington Will Win

Washington is back at home. That was a rough two week vacation away, but this might be one of those teams that plays at another level in its own surroundings.

Washington was fine throwing the ball in the two losses, but the secondary has to hold up better after allowing UCLA and ASU to complete 73% of their throws.

Arizona can be sharp when Jayden de Laura is on, but the Washington defensive front should provide a bit more pressure than it did over the previous two games.

On the other side, Washington lead the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed, the passing attack is the second-best behind Texas Tech, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona is leaving Tucson for the second time since Week 1, and it has to deal with a team jacked to turn this around fast.

It starts with the running attack. Michael Penix Jr. will do what he does and wing it around for over 300 yards, but the Huskies will win this by averaging over five yards per carry and controlling the game when it has to be settled down.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Get AJ Swann going right away.

The freshman quarterback is looking more and more like a talent to build around hitting 71% of his passes for 281 yards and two scores in the loss to Ole Miss. He has yet to throw an interception this season. He’s not afraid to push the ball down the field, and in the he’ll have to take chances.

The Vanderbilt offense line has been great in pass protection. For all the amazing things Georgia does defensively, it’s generating the fewest sacks in the SEC and doesn’t come up with plays in the backfield.

Why Georgia Will Win

The Vanderbilt offense is showing a few interesting things. The defense …

It’s having issues. That’s going to happen when you play Alabama, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest, and now it gets the fun of Georgia.

It seems like the offense has picked it back up after a few sluggish games. The yards were there against Kent State and Missouri, but the win over Auburn was different. The running game was great last week, Stetson Bennett kept things moving, and there wasn’t any drama.

No, Georgia doesn’t do much with its pass rush, and Vanderbilt doesn’t, either. The lack of pressure is partly why the secondary allowed 848 passing yards over the last two games.

Now …

What’s Going To Happen

Bennett has to throw a touchdown pass again.

The Georgia offense was fine cranking out rushing scores last week against Auburn, but it’s been three games since Bennett threw a scoring pass.

Vanderbilt was great in the first half against Ole Miss last week and it’ll be completive early on this week, too. The Georgia offense will pick it up late in the first half and the defense will clamp down hard in the second.

Wisconsin vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Did Wisconsin snap out of it?

Granted, beating Northwestern is about as difficult as dogging the NFL for its roughing the passer rules, but after all the drama of the Paul Chryst firing, and after all the ugliness in the losses to Ohio State and Illinois, the Badgers looked the part again … sort of.

The 42-7 win wasn’t even that close, but it’s because the passing game clicked with six touchdown passes to go along with the 193 yards on the ground.

As long as the midrange throws are clicking and the rushing attack is effective, the defense should be able to do the rest. No one’s stopping Ohio State – no dogging the Badgers for getting ripped in that – but the D has held down everyone else, especially against the run.

Michigan State hasn’t hit 50 rushing yards in three of its last four games.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Michigan State Will Win

If the Spartans are ever going to get the season going under former Badger Mel Tucker, it has to start now.

The passing game has been okay. That’s partly because the rushing attack has been so bad, but it’s effective enough to push Wisconsin secondary that gives up plenty of yards.

Turning this around starts with stuffing the Badgers on the ground. Wisconsin isn’t running as easily as it normally does, it’s not controlling the clock like it does when it’s rolling, and forget the Northwestern win, Graham Mertz isn’t throwing that well.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State is getting killed on the lines.

The offensive side isn’t doing a thing in pass protection for the ground game, and the defensive front isn’t nearly as disruptive as it needs to be.

The team will be jacked up enough at home to come up with a good first quarter, but the energy will start to fizzle. The Badgers will be balanced, but this week will be about the running game that takes over in the second half.

Jim Leonhard’s defense will handle everything else.
