Packers vs. Commanders: 5 things to watch and a prediction for Week 7

Five things to watch and a prediction for Sunday’s Week 7 showdown between the Packers and Commanders.

Games in Week 7 aren’t typically of the “must win” variety in Green Bay, but the Packers are 3-3 and in desperate need of a stabilizing victory against the Washington Commanders, a 2-4 football team preparing to start a backup quarterback on Sunday at FedEx Field.

Can the Packers break a two-game slide and get a suddenly wobbly season back in balance to start this stretch of three straight road games?

Here are five things to watch and a prediction:

Broncos injury report: Russell Wilson questionable for Week 7

#Broncos QB Russell Wilson (hamstring) is questionable for this week’s game against the #Jets 🤕

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson (hamstring) is questionable for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Wilson has been pushing to play and he has said he is a fast healer, jokingly suggesting that his “wolverine blood” helps him recover quickly.

Denver’s staff, though, won’t want Wilson to play through the injury if he’s not ready.

“We want to put somebody out there that’s healthy and can go out there and play at a high level,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said Thursday.

Wilson is the team’s obvious QB1, but the Broncos will not want to risk worsening his injury if Wilson is not cleared to play.

“You don’t want to put anybody out there that isn’t healthy,” Hackett said.

If Wilson is not cleared to play this weekend, Brett Rypien is the most likely candidate to start in his place (Josh Johnson is also available on the practice squad). Rypien helped the Broncos defeat the Jets 37-28 in his first (and only) career start in 2020.

Denver’s complete injury report with game statuses can be seen below.

The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Jets 22-16-1, including a 26-0 victory at home last season. Sunday’s game will air on CBS (TV map).

Will new 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey play against Chiefs in Week 7?

It sounds like new #49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is likely to play in some capacity against the #Chiefs on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 7 opponent made a blockbuster trade on Thursday night.

The San Francisco 49ers traded a boatload of draft capital to acquire star RB Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers. This was an all-in move for a team that’s been dealing with injuries and struggling on the offensive side of the ball this season. He’ll surely help their outlook in the NFC West conference in 2022, but what about the upcoming Week 7 tilt with the Chiefs?

Is there any possible way that McCaffrey would be able to suit up against Kansas City? It seems unlikely given the quick turnaround and the fact that he’s not familiar with the playbook. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that McCaffrey will fly into San Francisco on Friday, so there is at least a chance he practices before the week concludes.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that McCaffrey has already spoken with 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan and that they’re planning to at least have a red-zone package installed for him. That means he could be looking at upward of a half-dozen snaps in Week 7.

All-in-all it might be in the 49ers’ best interest to not put McCaffrey out there before he’s ready. After all, the 26-year-old running back does have a lengthy injury history.

It’s also possible that all this hubbub over the McCaffrey trade could serve as a distraction in San Francisco in their final practice of the week on Friday.

NFL odds: Broncos are 1.5-point favorites vs. Jets in Week 7

The #Broncos are considered slight favorites against the #Jets this week, according to @Tipico Sportsbook.

Before news broke that quarterback Russell Wilson is “day-to-day” with a hamstring injury, the Denver Broncos (2-4) were considered 3.5-point favorites against the New York Jets (4-2) in Week 7.

With Wilson’s status now uncertain, Denver is still a favorite, but only by a 1.5-point margin, according to Tipico Sportsbook. The over/under for total points scored between the Broncos and Jets has been set at 39.5.

Last week, Denver was listed as a 5.5-point underdog to the Los Angeles Chargers and the Broncos lost by three points. New York was considered a 7.5-point underdog to the Green Bay Packers and the Jets went on to win by 17 points.

The Broncos lead the all-time series against the Jets 22-16-1, including a 26-0 victory at home last season.

Report: Andy Dalton expected to start vs. Cardinals, Jameis Winston still QB3

Report: Andy Dalton expected to start vs. Cardinals, Jameis Winston still QB3

There you go: ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the New Orleans Saints expect to start Andy Dalton at quarterback on Thursday night against the Arizona Cardinals, with injured starter Jameis Winston continuing to round out the game-day depth chart as their third option — he’ll only play in an emergency should both Dalton and Taysom Hill be unavailable. The Saints recently re-signed backup quarterback Jake Luton to their practice squad but it’s unlikely he’ll be activated for this game.

Dalton was able to practice fully on Wednesday while dealing with a back injury suffered last week versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Winston is dealing with back and ankle issues and has been a limited participant in practice for a few weeks now, so he’s on the road to recovery. But the Saints plan to keep Dalton under center until Winston’s body is right and he can practice and play fully. We’ll see how the situation develops in the days and weeks ahead.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo provides encouraging update on Trent McDuffie, Willie Gay Jr.

Both Trent McDuffie and Willie Gay Jr. looked good in practice on Wednesday per #Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo — a positive sign regarding their status for Week 7.

It looks like the Kansas City Chiefs could welcome both rookie CB Trent McDuffie and third-year LB Willie Gay Jr. to the lineup in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.

McDuffie was designated to return from injured reserve ahead of Week 6, but the Chiefs didn’t activate him after the practice week. He was present for the first practice of the week ahead of Week 7 on Wednesday.

Gay Jr. saw his suspension lifted by the NFL this week, but Andy Reid wouldn’t commit to his return in Week 7. He wanted to “see where he’s at” during the practice week before making that determination.

Speaking to media members on Wednesday, Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo provided an encouraging update on both players.

“Both of them looked good to me (in practice) yesterday,” Spagnuolo said. “Now, I go off of what (VP of Sports Medicine and Performance) Rick (Burkholder) says, in Trent’s (McDuffie) case I go off of what Rick says. And Willie (Gay Jr.), he is a ball of energy. So, he’s going to be (going) 100 miles per hour no matter what. But, he’s rusty, you know. He hasn’t been in there for a month. So, he’ll have to knock some rust off, but we need to do that. We need to get him out there and get rolling.”

It sounds like both players are making progress and will have a chance to play in Week 7. For McDuffie, it’s a matter of getting Burkholder to sign off on his return. For Gay Jr., it’s all about showing that he can shake the rust off during the course of the practice week.

Gay hasn’t played since the Week 2 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. McDuffie’s last snap came in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. Their return would be welcomed against a tough NFC West team in the San Francisco 49ers.

6 games Rams fans should watch during Week 7 bye

The Rams are off this week, but 6 games could have playoff implications down the line for Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Rams badly needed a week off. They’re battling too many injuries and now with a bye in Week 7, several players will have an extra week to rest and recover before the team visits the 49ers in Week 8.

While it stinks that the Rams won’t be playing this Sunday afternoon, there are still some relevant games taking place this week when it comes to the team’s playoff chances. Here are six games to keep an eye on.

Will the 49ers get stung by Chiefs’ Jet Chip Wasp again in Week 7? Don’t count on it.

Expecting a redux of 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp when the #Chiefs face the #49ers in Week 7? Andy Reid says not so fast.

With Week 7 on the horizon, memories are flooding in for Chiefs Kingdom.

The last time the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers squared off was in Super Bowl LIV. It also happened to be when one of the most iconic plays in franchise history was born.

Only 65 Toss Power Trap compares to 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp in terms of its infamy. Third-and-15 and down by 10 points, the Chiefs needed some magic and Patrick Mahomes delivered.

“Do we have time to run wasp?” Mahomes asked offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

They did have time to run it.

The offense needed 15 yards, but Mahomes targeted Tyreek Hill on the play and they got 44 yards, which wasn’t too uncommon for the duo. That moment was the turning point in the game for Kansas City as they’d come back to defeat San Francisco 31-20.

The play call, 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp, immediately became a favorite among fans. The Chiefs Kingdom had it printed on T-Shirts, and it was added to the Madden NFL video game franchise.

Could the Chiefs revisit this iconic play in Week 7? Perhaps they can catch the 49ers off guard by using it again? Andy Reid says not so fast.

“Yeah, that play got a lot of publicity,” Reid said. “I’m sure they’ve worked on it, but we don’t run it anymore so.”

It appears the Chiefs have retired 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp from the playbook, or at least that is what Reid would have you believe. Of course, Hill is no longer on the team and this play was specifically designed for him.

Patrick Mahomes explained in the 2020 offseason that they’ve run variations of that play in the past prior to Super Bowl LIV. He reiterated that sentiment when asked about Reid’s comments on the iconic play.

“Yeah when you have a top offense in the league, I mean teams are going to study you in the offseason,” Mahomes explained. “They’re going to see what you do because it goes around the league too. I mean offenses steal from each other and run some of the same plays and so you see that defenses have accounted for that, accounted for some of the stuff that we’ve done so how are we going to combat that? How are we going to go out there and make plays that go off of it to get other guys open? That’s something that we – that’s a challenge every day – and we try to continue to do every week. We know that we’re going to have to continue to evolve if we want to be a top offense in this league.”

So, while there might not be a return to wasp this week, maybe we’ll get “Murder Hornet” or  “Killer Bee” as a variation or twist on the play. The question remains will they actually have time to run it against a talented 49ers defensive front?
