Is it possible the College Football Playoff picture is getting clearer with the Big Ten and Pac-12 yet to start their season?

Florida’s flop at Texas A&M and Georgia‘s manhandling of Tennessee established the Bulldogs as the clear favorite in the SEC East. The stumbles of LSU and Auburn have left Alabama as the leader in the conference’s West division. Georgia travels to Alabama this Saturday in what should be the first of two games between the schools. The latter showdown in the SEC title game would send the winner to the playoff. The loser would be in great shape when being evaluated with teams from the Pac-12, Big Ten or Big 12.

The home field should help the Tide this week. The edge, right now, goes to the Bulldogs when playing on neutral ground in Atlanta, leaving both with one loss and comfortably in the field.

Ohio State and Clemson remain clear favorites in their conferences, rounding out the four participants in the semifinals.

However, like everything in college football, nothing is set in stone. Oregon and Oklahoma State have the best opportunity to upset things. The Ducks will be hampered by a shortened schedule that lacks a ranked opponent, but an unbeaten season would be worthy of consideration. The same is true for the Cowboys, who still have to navigate the toughest part of their Big 12 schedule without a hiccup.

With the expectation that the NCAA will waive the required six-win threshold for teams to play in the postseason, we will continue to fill out the entire bowl schedule. Conferences are expected to be able to fill their allotment of games.

No. 12 Florida is down seven after losing to No. 11 Texas A&M. No. 21 Tennessee is down 10 after being blown out in the second half by UGA.

Alabama stays at No. 2 and Georgia moves up to No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank while several SEC teams experience steep drops in the 1-126.

No. 12 Florida is down seven after losing to No. 11 Texas A&M. No. 21 Tennessee is down 10 after being blown out in the second half by Georgia. Auburn is down seven to No. 23 after needing a late field goal to beat No. 44 Arkansas.

[lawrence-related id=25493,25491]

The biggest hits came to No. 54 Mississippi State, which is down 28 spots after losing to No. 52 Kentucky, and No. 58 LSU, which lost to No. 57 Missouri and sits at 1-2 with several difficult games ahead.

The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs have separated themselves from the rest of the pack in the SEC heading into Saturday night’s key matchup in Tuscaloosa.

But both teams are still chasing No. 1 Clemson, which secured another week atop the 1-126 after a 42-17 win against No. 19 Miami. The Tigers spotted the Hurricanes a touchdown on a blocked kick to end the first half and were in complete control throughout.

The top 10 includes one team from the Big 12 in No. 9 Oklahoma State and another Group of Five team in No. 8 Cincinnati.

Six teams inside the top 15 have yet to play a game: No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon, No. 13 Michigan, No. 14 Southern California and No. 15 Wisconsin.

The Big Ten will begin play on Oct. 24, followed by the Pac-12 on Nov. 7.

Vegas Watch: Lions open Week 6 as 3 1/2-point favorites over Jaguars

The Detroit Lions open Week 6 as 3 1/2-point favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars according to Bet MGM.

With the Detroit Lions (1-3) coming off a bye, they have had an extra week to prepare for their Week 6 opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4). That additional preparation time, coupled with the Jaguars four-game losing streak and it’s not too hard to see why the Lions are 3 1/2-point favorites — according to BetMGM — despite being on the road.

Not only are the Jaguars on a tough losing streak, but their last three games have also all been losses to opponents who were previously winless — Week 3: 0-2 Dolphins, Week 4: 0-3 Bengals, and Week 5: 0-4 Texans. To make matters just a bit worse, they have struggled to score during that time as well, only putting up 13, 25, and 14 points, while surrendering at least 30 in each of those contests.

Meanwhile, the Lions haven’t been lighting up the score sheet either, but they have scored at least 21 points in every game. With an over/under of 54.5, it’s fair to assume the bettors are banking on each of these defenses giving up a lot of points — but neither offense has done enough this season to support that just yet.

BetMGM has a lot of various bet lines to wager on in this game, but here’s a look at the basic concepts most would be interested in, including the Moneyline, points spread, and over/under.

Moneyline

Lions -189
Jaguars +160

Spread

Lions -3.5 -110
Jaguars +3.5 -110

Over/Under

Total points scored Over Under
54.5 -110 -110

Lions total points scored

18.5 -715 +450
21.5 -358 +260

27.5 -129 100
30.5 +115 -150
33.5 +175 -228
36.5 +270 -385

There will also a considerable amount of player prop bets added throughout the week, including touchdowns scorers, the first player to score, quarterback passing props (yards, touchdowns, interceptions, attempts, completions, longest completion), running back props (rushing yards, attempts, rushing + receiving yards), and receiver props (receiving yards, receptions, longest reception).

Pete Carroll says ‘always protect the team’ rule applies to bye week

The Seattle Seahawks players will continue their daily testing for COVID-19 throughout the bye week, encouraged to “always protect the team.”

The Seattle Seahawks are entering the bye week with a perfect 5-0 record to start the season for the first time in franchise history. But there is a more important record coach Pete Carroll wants the team to preserve as well – continuing to test negative for COVID-19 throughout the break.

With the coronavirus pandemic still in full swing, players will still be required to test daily, even during the bye week.

“We have to be so, so tuned in,” Carroll said during his Monday morning press conference. “Rule No. 1 is always protect the team, you know. This is what this week is about. Rule No.1 is all about conscience and staying connected to team and players and who you represent and all that.

“Everything is at stake.”

Carroll explained the reason the message is so important is that everyone will be away from their daily routines and there is simply no way to practice or prepare for the gravity of the situation.

Carroll said the players will undergo COVID-19 tests each morning.

Week 6 college football winners and losers, per USA TODAY

The loss to Texas A&M on Saturday dropped the Gators to the bottom of the top-10, severely crippling their College Football Playoff hopes.

[jwplayer kyuJhM3C-er0jUifI]

A wild Week 6 of college football is in the books, and the Gators find themselves with a tick in the loss column for the first time in the 2020 season after falling to Texas A&M on the road.

The loss dropped UF from No. 3 to No. 9 in the Amway Coaches Poll, and though it was able to remain in the top 10, it’s not surprising that in USA TODAY’s “winners and losers” recap of the week, Florida finds itself in the “loser” category.

Florida

The loss to A&M chews up the Gators’ wiggle room but doesn’t necessarily change the path to the playoff: Florida still needs to beat Georgia, win the East and then claim the SEC championship to ensure a place in the semifinals. Not that any team with these issues on defense has a real shot at the national title. While the offense is humming behind quarterback Kyle Trask, the Gators have allowed at least 35 points twice through three games.

Meanwhile, the Aggies were the biggest movers in the Coaches Poll this week, rising nine spots from No. 20 to No. 11. After earning its first win over a top-five team since coach Jimbo Fisher took over in 2018, TAMU is a winner this week.

Texas A&M

Coming one week after a humbling loss to Alabama, Texas A&M’s 41-38 win against Florida restores faith in third-year coach Jimbo Fisher and breathes life back into the Aggies’ season. The nature of the win might tell you something about this team: A&M was down 28-17 and seemed in danger of seeing the Gators pull away before pulling even and then ahead with a field goal as time expired. Senior quarterback Kellen Mond had one of the best games of his career with 338 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

Georgia, who is now in the driver’s seat of the SEC East after beating Tennessee on Saturday, is also in the “winner” category.

Georgia

Tennessee went into halftime with momentum after a late stand near its goal line preserved a 21-17 lead. But Georgia pulverized the Volunteers in the second half to win 44-21 and remain unbeaten heading into next weekend’s game against Alabama. There’s nothing particularly pretty about the Bulldogs’ style of play, which leans more toward the SEC style of the early 2010s than the more wide-open approach in vogue throughout the conference. It works: Georgia steadily forced Tennessee into mistakes while dominating the line of scrimmage. Is this style good enough to beat the Crimson Tide? We’re going to find out.

Florida has the chance to right the ship this week with a win over 1-2 LSU, who is coming off a loss at Missouri in a game that was moved from Louisiana due to Hurricane Delta. If the Gators have any hope of taking back control of the division and keeping their College Football Playoff hopes alive, they have to win on Saturday.

Florida Gators drop down to the double-digits in AP Poll for Week 6

Like USA TODAY Sports’ rankings UF dropped 6 spots from 4th to 10th in Sunday’s release leaving the Gators hanging in the top-10 by a thread

[jwplayer kyuJhM3C-er0jUifI]

Much like in the Amway Coaches Poll published earlier today, the Florida Gators tripped and fell in the Associated Press Poll after being upset on the road against the Texas A&M Aggies for their first loss of the season. Similarly to USA TODAY Sports’ rankings, UF dropped six spots from fourth to tenth in Sunday’s release, leaving the Gators hanging in the top-10 by a thread.

The first four spots mirror the Coaches Poll’s picks, with the undefeated Clemson Tigers, now 4-0 on the season, remaining perched at the top and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish following up, respectively. In a bit of a wrinkle from the other rankings, the North Carolina Tar Heels round out the top-5, edging out the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Also a reflection of USA TODAY Sports’ picks, Florida is the only other Southeastern Conference team in the top-10. With the Texas A&M Aggies leaping to No. 11 after their big home win, Auburn Tigers dropping a spot to No. 14 after their too-close-for-comfort win over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Tennessee Volunteers falling four notches to No. 18 after its sound loss to Georgia, these teams represent the remaining six SEC programs in the top-25 after the LSU Tigers got dumped due to its loss to the Missouri Tigers on Saturday.

The other SEC schools receiving votes were the Ole Miss Rebels, who received six votes, while LSU earned five and Missouri nabbed two after their big win.

Gators take tumble, remain in top 10 in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Florida drops to No. 9 in USA TODAY Sports’ latest rankings after a disappointing loss to the Texas A&M Aggies in Week 3 of SEC football.

After a heartbreaking loss on the road to the Texas A&M Aggies, the Florida Gators have fallen to No. 9 in the latest update to the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. It was also quite a tumultuous weekend for another Southeastern Conference team as well, with the LSU Tigers dropping out of the top-25 after a loss to the unranked Missouri Tigers on Saturday.

The Clemson Tigers held on to the top spot after a strong win over the previously seventh-ranked Miami Hurricanes, who dropped to No. 12 in this week’s poll. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs remained at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, while the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes shifting up a spot to round out the top-5.

Florida is the only other Southeastern Conference in the top-10, though the Texas A&M Aggies jumped to No. 11 and threaten to enter the upper echelon of the rankings after their big home win on Saturday. The Auburn Tigers come in at No. 14 after their narrow home victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Tennessee Volunteers at No. 17 after their road loss to Georgia, capping off the five SEC teams in the top-25.

Presumed rescheduling pushes Dolphins’ bye week to Week 6

Presumed rescheduling pushes Dolphins’ bye week to Week 6

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to linger in the background of the 2020 NFL season and now the implications of positive tests have arrived to impact the Miami Dolphins. No, there are no active COVID-19 cases on the Dolphins’ roster or in their organization. No, the Dolphins’ previously scheduled Week 6 opponent, the Denver Broncos, aren’t mired down by the virus either. But the Broncos have not been cleared to play the New England Patriots this weekend as the Patriots grapple with the virus.

The end result? Miami’s Week 6 contest has been rescheduled. And now, courtesy of ESPN’s Adam Schefter, we know what the rumored plan of attack is for the NFL as they look to pivot and readjust their expectations for the schedule. Most prominent to the Dolphins?

A Week 6 bye and a date with the Broncos during Miami’s previously scheduled bye in Week 11.

This is sure to not be the last adjustment the NFL must make in scheduling amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But for the Dolphins, this is a significant change as it removes all possible wiggle room for Miami without having to add additional weeks to the schedule. If another Dolphins opponent, or the Dolphins themselves, see an uptick in cases of the virus, the NFL will be greatly challenged to pivot once again.

If you’re looking for a silver lining for an unexpected bye week, it may build the Dolphins the bridge they need to make that much anticipated change at quarterback. But first we’ll need to see how today goes in San Francisco against the 49ers. The Dolphins and 49ers kickoff at 4:05 PM EST.

Report: Chiefs-Bills Week 6 game tentatively rescheduled from Thursday to Sunday

The rescheduling all depends on if the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills game in Week 5 is actually played.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills Week 6 game on Thursday, Oct. 15 has been tentatively rescheduled, moving from “Thursday Night Football” to Sunday, Oct. 18. This comes following an earlier report from ESPN that the game could be pushed to Saturday. It’s all part of a chain reaction caused by the COVID-19 outbreak on the Tennessee Titans.

According to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL is moving two games. The Titans-Bills Week 5 game, scheduled to be played on Sunday, Oct. 11, is being moved to Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. so long as there are no more positive tests.

The Chiefs-Bills game is moving to Sunday on a tentative basis, depending on whether or not the Titans-Bills game can be played this week. If there are more positive cases in Tennessee and the game with Buffalo can’t be played, the Chiefs-Bills game would revert back to its originally scheduled time on Thursday.

Right now we don’t have an updated kickoff time for a Chiefs-Bills game taking place on Sunday. It’s likely that the NFL won’t make a decision on that until absolutely necessary. Ultimately, Buffalo or Kansas City will get to play in Week 6 on short rest, in a game that could have serious implications in the AFC conference.
