Texas Basketball: Jeff Goodman puts Longhorns in his preseason top 10

Jeff Goodman of Stadium has put UT as high as No. 10 in his way-too-early top 25. Only the defending champs Baylor Bears are ranked higher.

When Shaka Smart decided to move on from Texas and head north to Marquette, a rebuild seemed to be ahead of the program. Chris Beard put all of that talk to bed the minute he was hired.

Four elite level transfers have made Austin their destination since Beard’s hiring on April 1. On top of that, a four-star guard/forward switched over from Texas Tech to Texas, while three of Smart’s Big 12 championship players are returning as well.

With all of the talent acquisition and returning talent, there will be no rebuild this season. Because of that, Texas has begun to shoot up preseason ranking boards.

Jeff Goodman of Stadium has put the Longhorns as high as No. 10 in his way-too-early top 25. Only the defending national champions Baylor Bears are ranked higher.

Here is Goodman’s reasoning behind putting Texas in the top 10:

I’m betting on Chris Beard and his staff. He still has to add more pieces to the roster, but he’s already brought on four impact transfers and will bring back Jones and Ramey. They’ll be more.

Texas has the opportunity to continue to build preseason hype with the potential of Greg Brown and Jericho Sims to return. Both project as first-round picks in the upcoming NBA draft. May 30 is the deadline to declare.

Beard and his staff have been preaching “Monday night” in front of the media. The goal has been clearly set at not only making the Final Four, but the national championship.

Preseason hype is fun for now but when Beard a company get on the court this fall, living up to it will be a different challenge.

Florida football holds steady in AP Top 25 for Week 8

Despite sitting out for the second week in a row UF’s football team managed to stand pat in AP Top 25 update for Week 8 of college football.

Florida Gators drop down to the double-digits in AP Poll for Week 6

Like USA TODAY Sports’ rankings UF dropped 6 spots from 4th to 10th in Sunday’s release leaving the Gators hanging in the top-10 by a thread

[jwplayer kyuJhM3C-er0jUifI]

Much like in the Amway Coaches Poll published earlier today, the Florida Gators tripped and fell in the Associated Press Poll after being upset on the road against the Texas A&M Aggies for their first loss of the season. Similarly to USA TODAY Sports’ rankings, UF dropped six spots from fourth to tenth in Sunday’s release, leaving the Gators hanging in the top-10 by a thread.

The first four spots mirror the Coaches Poll’s picks, with the undefeated Clemson Tigers, now 4-0 on the season, remaining perched at the top and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish following up, respectively. In a bit of a wrinkle from the other rankings, the North Carolina Tar Heels round out the top-5, edging out the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Also a reflection of USA TODAY Sports’ picks, Florida is the only other Southeastern Conference team in the top-10. With the Texas A&M Aggies leaping to No. 11 after their big home win, Auburn Tigers dropping a spot to No. 14 after their too-close-for-comfort win over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Tennessee Volunteers falling four notches to No. 18 after its sound loss to Georgia, these teams represent the remaining six SEC programs in the top-25 after the LSU Tigers got dumped due to its loss to the Missouri Tigers on Saturday.

The other SEC schools receiving votes were the Ole Miss Rebels, who received six votes, while LSU earned five and Missouri nabbed two after their big win.

Texas drops two spots in USA TODAY Sports re-rank due to Big Ten

In the USA TODAY re-rank, Big Ten teams are back, with two ranking inside the top 10. Because of them, Texas finds itself dropping two spots.

After initially postponing its 2020 college football season, the Big Ten announced on Wednesday it would be returning on Oct. 23 or 24. The conference joins the ACC, Big 12, and SEC as the Power Five conferences to play football in the fall.

After initial polls included Big Ten teams, recent coaches polls and AP poll left them out.

In the USA TODAY re-rank, Big Ten teams are back, with two creeping inside the top 10. Ohio State (No. 2) and Penn State (No. 8) are considered two of the best teams in the country.

Since the Buckeyes and Ninty Lions join the top ten, the Longhorns dropped two spots to No. 10. UCF and LSU are outsiders now, falling to No. 11 and No. 12 respectively.

If you scroll all the way down to No. 90, you will find Kansas in dead last. The Jayhawks lost at home to Coastal Carolina for the second consecutive season on Saturday night. It was the end of a horrible day for the Big 12.

Moving on to Week 3 and the ACC is the only conference to have a full slate of games. The Big 12 will have Baylor hosting Houston while Tulsa will travel to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State.

Big 12 and SEC play will begin on Sept. 26 with the Big Ten following nearly a month later.

Texas Football: Top 10 in 247Sports AP poll prediction

247Sports has projected the new preseason AP top 25. For what would be the second season in a row, Texas found itself in the top 10.

247Sports has projected the new preseason AP top 25 after the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to cancel their season. For what would be the second season in a row, Texas found itself in the top 10.

Last season, the Longhorns failed to meet up to the top 10 expectations, finishing 8-5 and without a Big 12 championship appearance. Now, Tom Herman and new coordinators Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash will be looking to find some type of consistency.

Here is what 247Sports had to say about the Longhorns.

“Remember, we’re projecting here, so this is an attempt to gauge just how fond of the Longhorns AP voters are this month. Face it, there’s a lot to like. This is Tom Herman’s deepest team in his tenure and his two best players — quarterback Sam Ehlinger and safety Caden Sterns — are guys you can bank on to have difference-making seasons. A three-game stretch vs. Oklahoma, Baylor and on the road vs. Oklahoma State will determine just how good Texas is this fall.”

The Big 12 released their schedule today, mixing up the order of the Longhorns’ games. Texas will now have two bye weeks, one before the Baylor matchup and another before traveling to Kansas.

Another benefit to the new schedule is no back to back road games. The Longhorns played three out of their final five games of the 2019 season away from Austin, losing all of them.

As for the rest of the Big 12, four other teams appear in the prediction, with Oklahoma being the highest at No. 4. Baylor and TCU sneak in at No. 22 and No. 23 respectively.
