Stars, studs and duds from Packers’ Week 5 win over Rams

The stars, studs and duds from the Packers’ Week 5 win over the Rams.

The Green Bay Packers used two takeaways from Xavier McKinney and two touchdowns from Tucker Kraft to erase a 13-10 halftime deficit, and a late defensive stop — powered by impressive plays from a pair of rookies on fourth down — helped the Packers escape Los Angeles with a 24-19 win over the Rams on Sunday.

Jordan Love and the passing game were inconsistent early but eventually caught fire following a chaotic pick-six. Once again, the Packers offense feels close but still lacks consistency.

Here are the stars, studs and duds from the Packers’ Week 5 win over the Rams:

Stars

S Xavier McKinney: He recovered a fumble, creating a game-turning play, and he nearly picked off three passes. On the Rams’ first possession, McKinney diagnosed a deep crosser and met Tutu Atwell at the catch for a pass breakup on third down. Later, he ranged to his right and was in position to catch Matthew Stafford’s pressured overthrow, marking his fifth interception in five games. A drive later, he nearly had his second interception on a leaping attempt of a Stafford pass over the middle. He plays from multiple alignments, gives up nothing in coverage, tackles everything and continually finds the football. McKinney is enjoying an All-Pro start to 2024.

TE Tucker Kraft: His YAC ability has emerged as an elite trait within the Packers offense. He broke at least three tackle attempts on his two touchdown catches — one a 66-yarder in which he showed explosiveness in the open field, and a second on a screen pass in which he weaved through defenders and found the end zone. Later in the second half, he bounced off a tackle attempt after a short catch and converted a first down. Once again, Kraft was valuable as a blocker, especially on the move. He is quickly turning into one of the NFL’s best all-around tight ends.

Studs

RB Josh Jacobs: While it wasn’t a flashy performance, Jacobs’ 20-touch, 94-yard finish was nothing if not effective. He produced a pair of runs over 10 yards and had a 21-yard catch. On the Packers’ 96-yard scoring drive, Jacobs converted three first downs and then creatively bounced outside on his 2-yard touchdown run. Jacobs fought for tough yards between the tackles, and his presence helped create big plays in the run-action game. Of his 20 touches, seven gained a first down or a scored touchdown.

WR Jayden Reed: The third-down drop was a poor play, but Reed also set up three different scores with explosive plays: a touchdown after his 53-yard catch, a field goal after his 18-yard catch and a touchdown after his 11-yard run. He finished with 97 yards on six touches and it should have been more. Rare is the slot receiver who can make an over-the-shoulder catch running full speed 60 yards downfield with three defenders in the area.

LB Edgerrin Cooper: His quickness and closing speed as a blitzer — especially when the Packers bring him on delayed stunts — have been overwhelming. On a third-down sack, he stunted from the A-gap to the edge, came unblocked and lassoed down Matthew Stafford to end a drive. On the game’s decisive play, Cooper looped inside, had a free run and forced a hurried and inaccurate throw. The rookie was also in on a run stop and a tackle for loss, and he wasn’t picked on in coverage.

S Evan Williams: The rookie safety made two run stops, broke up two passes and provided blanket coverage on the decisive fourth down stop. He played fast but under control as a deep safety and aggressive and physical near the line of scrimmage. His coverage wasn’t always perfect, but he played Colby Parkinson tough on a few important targets over the middle. The Packers played him on every defensive snap, potentially signaling a full-time role for Williams moving forward.

DE Kingsley Enagbare: Every game needs a game-turning play, and Enagbare helped provide one. His punch out on Kyren Williams halted the Rams’ first drive of the second half in Packers territory and set up a touchdown drive. Enagbare also had a quarterback hit on Matthew Stafford.

DL Karl Brooks: Playing more snaps in place of Devonte Wyatt, Brooks made three huge plays as a pass-rusher. His pressure on Stafford helped force Xavier McKinney’s interception. He ended a drive with a third-down sack. And his second-down sack of Stafford helped kill the Rams’ final drive. Brooks led the team in pressures.

Duds

WR Dontayvion Wicks: To be fair to Wicks, Jordan Love missed him on two clean routes that should have been easy completions. But the second-year receiver also dropped another pass, and he failed on another contested catch in a big spot on third down late in the game. A false start backed the Packers up inside the 10-yard line before Love’s pick-six. The Packers really need Wicks and Love to start connecting, especially on the layups.

WR Malik Heath: He played 45 snaps, produced only 14 receiving yards on 21 routes run and committed two penalties, including a holding penalty on a run play and a false start on 1st-and-10. It’s possible he would have had a big play on an RPO slant during the Packers’ second to last possession, but the Rams knocked down the ball.

CB Eric Stokes: The Rams picked on Stokes at times. He allowed seven catches into his coverage, including a pair of first-down catches from Jordan Whittington and a touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson.

Pat Surtain says pre-game jersey swap with Champ Bailey was ‘pretty legendary’

“That jersey swap was legendary,” Pat Surtain said of getting Champ Bailey’s jersey. “That’s something that I have always wanted to have.”

The Denver Broncos welcomed former players back to Empower Field at Mile High as part of Alumni Weekend for their showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.

Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey was among the Broncos greats who returned to watch the team’s game against the Raiders. Before the game, Bailey exchanged jerseys with current cornerback Pat Surtain.

Surtain and his teammates then went on to put on a show in a 34-18 victory. Surtain totaled two interceptions, including a 100-yard pick-six.

“That was pretty legendary to say the least,” Surtain said after the game. “Having a guy like Champ come out there and watch and bring such good energy. It’s expected out there when you have a Hall of Fame player like that come and watch you. I had to capitalize on the opportunities I could get. I had to make that pick-six happen and got another blessing with another pick as well too, so that jersey swap was legendary. That’s something that I have always wanted to have.”

Surtain continues to make plays that remind Broncos Country of Bailey’s time in Denver.

Surtain now has nine career interceptions and a pair of defensive touchdowns. He has quite a ways to go to chase down Bailey’s 52 career interceptions and four touchdowns, but PS2’s off to a great start.

Broncos QB Bo Nix rocked a John Elway jersey after beating Raiders

“It was a great day to kind of pay tribute to those that came before you,” Broncos QB Bo Nix said of wearing a throwback John Elway jersey.

The Denver Broncos wore their 1977-inspired throwback jerseys against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday and welcomed more than 120 former players back to Empower Field at Mile as part of their Alumni Weekend.

Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix got into the throwback spirit by reporting to the game wearing a throwback John Elway jersey. He also rocked the jersey during his post-game press conference following a 34-18 win.

“Growing up, he was my dad’s favorite quarterback,” Nix said of Elway after the game. “Being a Bronco now with everything that he’s done to lay this foundation for the guys that come after him and can play quarterback at a high level. With my dad, that history with him being my dad’s favorite player. It’s just two guys that have put me in a situation to go out there and succeed. It was a great day to kind of pay tribute to those that came before you. [I] had it in the closet and wanted to put it to use.”

Denver’s throwback gear is wildly popular among fans and Elway’s throwback jersey is always a top seller. It seems that Nix and his father, Patrick Nix, are also big fans of the Hall of Fame quarterback. Nix is a perfect fit in Broncos Country.

Ex-Chiefs OL issues scathing criticism of struggling WR

Former #Chiefs OL Geoff Schwartz expressed his frustration about WR Skyy Moore’s recent performances in a post to Twitter on Monday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football” in Week 5, but the defending Super Bowl champions’ performance was far from perfect.

Third-year wide receiver Skyy Moore drew criticism from former Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz after his disappointing showing against the Saints in primetime.

Schwartz expressed his frustration with Moore in a post to Twitter, where he questioned why the Western Michigan product was still on Kansas City’s roster.

Check out Schwartz’s post below to see exactly what the nine-year NFL veteran had to say about Moore’s uninspiring play to this point in the 2024 regular season:

Moore hasn’t recorded a single catch through the Chiefs’ first five games and has mostly been limited to a special teams role as a kick returner.

Kansas City’s fans will have to wait to see if Moore can rebound with a better performance when the Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers after a Week 6 bye.

Final score: Chiefs remain undefeated, secure 26-13 win over Saints

The Kansas City #Chiefs are 5-0 after defeating the New Orleans #Saints 26-13 on “Monday Night Football.”

The Kansas City Chiefs kept their perfect season alive in Week 5 after defeating the New Orleans Saints 26-13 on “Monday Night Football.”

Though the two-score victory was a success for the defending Super Bowl champions heading into their bye week, quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ imperfect performance is sure to be a storyline this week.

Mahomes completed 28 of his 39 passes for 331 yards, but threw an interception and failed to score a touchdown against New Orleans.

Instead of relying on Mahomes to score points, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave the ball to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy and veteran running back Kareem Hunt in the red zone to lift Kansas City to victory.

On defense, the Chiefs were led by third-year safety Bryan Cook and linebacker Nick Bolton in the win. Cook intercepted Saints quarterback Derek Carr on New Orleans’ first possession, and Bolton recorded 11 combined tackles.

Fans in Kansas City will have to wait until October 20 to see the Chiefs back in action, when the defending champions face the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Week 7.

Chiefs vs. Saints: Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy combine for nifty touchdown

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce and WR Xavier Worthy combined on this highlight-reel touchdown during Kansas City’s Week 5 matchup against the #Saints

The Kansas City Chiefs are on track to earn their fifth win of the 2024 regular season against the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football.”

After a wild interception by former Chiefs defensive lineman Khalen Saunders led to a Saints touchdown that cut Kansas City’s lead to three points, Patrick Mahomes quickly marched the defending Super Bowl champions downfield.

The Chiefs hit paydirt to score a touchdown after coming out in a funky pistol formation that had tight end Travis Kelce receive the snap from center Creed Humphrey before he handed the ball off to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who wriggled into the end zone.

Take a look at the tricky play, which was posted by the Chiefs’ official Twitter account:

Though plenty of time remains for New Orleans to make a fourth-quarter comeback, this play by Kelce and Worthy gave Kansas City a ten-point lead when kicker Harrison Butker nailed his extra-point try.

Stay tuned if the Chiefs can advance to 5-0 heading into their bye week.

Andy Reid on Travis Kelce’s trick play vs. Saints: ‘We do it every day in practice’

Andy Reid said that the #Chiefs practice the trick play that Travis Kelce and Samaje Perine used against the #Saints in Week 5.

Tight end Travis Kelce got off to a slow start in his 2024 campaign, but made an early impact in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 5 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football.”

Kelce may have turned 35 this week, but the long-tenured pass-catcher still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

Facing a long 3rd and 22, quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with the veteran tight end for a short gain, but as Kelce maneuvered through the open space in the middle of the field, he lateraled the ball to running back Samaje Perine, who was able to get Kansas City close to the first down marker.

Check out this video of Kelce’s highlight reel play, which was posted to Twitter by the NFL’s official account:

Heading into halftime, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about the play and seemed to confirm that Kelce and Perine had practiced the unorthodox lateral in practice.

Expect the All-Pro tight end to keep making spectacular plays as the Chiefs look to remain undefeated heading into their bye week.

Chiefs vs. Saints: Travis Kelce, Samaje Perine combine for exciting play

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce and RB Samaje Perine combined on an exciting play that gained 20 yards against the #Saints on “Monday Night Football.”

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had to resort to trickery against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5 to help the defending Super Bowl champions convert a long first down in the second quarter.

Backed up because of a failed trick play and penalty, Kansas City faced a 3rd and 22 on New Orleans’ 44-yard line.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hit Kelce with an accurate pass over the middle, and when the star tight end saw veteran running back Samaje Perine open for a lateral, he pitched the ball to the former Cincinnati Bengal to get Kansas City close to the first down marker.

Check out this video of the exciting play, which was posted to Twitter by the NFL’s official account:

The Chiefs are set to receive the second-half kickoff, and will look to build on their early lead over the Saints during the third and fourth quarters on “Monday Night Football.”

Chiefs vs. Saints: LeBron James chimes in on Patrick Mahomes

NBA superstar LeBron James shared an observation about Patrick Mahomes on Twitter during the #Chiefs’ Week 5 matchup against the #Saints.

The Kansas City Chiefs have an early lead over the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football,” and fans in Western Missouri aren’t the only people who have been impressed by the defending Super Bowl champions’  performance in primetime.

NBA superstar LeBron James took to Twitter to share an observation about Patrick Mahomes during the game, indicating that he didn’t think the Chiefs could lose as long as the legendary quarterback was in Kansas City’s starting lineup.

Take a look at James’ tweet about Mahomes, which was posted shortly after kickoff on Monday night:

Though Mahomes seemed to receive most of the credit for the Chiefs’ success in James’ tweet, it was third-year safety Bryan Cook and veteran running back Kareem Hunt who helped Kansas City get out to an early lead.

Stay tuned to see if the Chiefs can keep their perfect record intact.
