Falcons drop to bottom five in TD Wire’s latest power rankings

As Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire puts it in his latest power rankings, the Falcons can affect the playoff picture, but won’t be participating in the postseason this year.

The Atlanta Falcons lost for the second time to the NFC-leading New Orleans Saints in Week 13. Now sitting at 4-8, the Falcons would have to win out just to avoid a third-straight losing season.

With two games remaining against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and one against the Kansas City Chiefs, there’s a strong possibility that Atlanta will finish with a top-10, or even a top-five pick in the upcoming draft. As Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire puts it in his latest power rankings, the Falcons can affect the playoff picture, but won’t be participating in the postseason this year.

Here’s what Schofield wrote about Atlanta, who dropped two spots to No. 28 in the new rankings:

For Atlanta, they still have a chance to make an impact on the playoff picture. Not as a participant, but as a spoiler. They have two games coming up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and they could really ruin the holiday season for Tom Brady and company with some magic of their own in the final three weeks of the season.

The Falcons do have one more favorable matchup, taking on the 3-9 Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14. After losing to the Saints in Week 11, Atlanta responded with a dominant 43-6 win over the Raiders.

We’ll see if the team can bounce back in a similar fashion against the Chargers this weekend.

Week 13 Staff Picks: One man stands along, picking Cowboys over Ravens

It seems so long ago, the last time the Dallas Cowboys played a football game. The team was met with their second bye week by means of days off, 12 of them to be exact. Dallas returned to their facility on Wednesday before their Week 13 opponent Baltimore Ravens even kicked off their Week 12 game. COVID-19 has set the NFL schedule on its head.

The game was scheduled for Thursday Night Football but this one will be played the following Tuesday giving the Cowboys more preparation time for a returning Lamar Jackson lead team. Jackson along with running backs Mark Ingram and JK Dobbins are expected to be back in the offensive lineup for this Tuesday night showdown.

The Cowboys Wire staff were quite confident headed into Thanksgiving except for our leader, KD Drummond, who had a feeling the Cowboys would drop one at home again. They did. Let’s see which which writers have lost all hope and lets see if there’s any still hanging on!

Dolphins LB Kyle Van Noy woke up Sunday feeling dangerous

Dolphins LB Kyle Van Noy woke up Sunday feeling dangerous

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy enjoyed his best game as a member of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. That will usually be the case whenever you log three sacks, a pass defensed and, most importantly, a win. Van Noy, who was a big signing by the Dolphins this offseason amid their efforts to secure several transplants from the New England Patriots’ program in their own efforts to form a winning culture, is a steady fixture in Miami’s revamped and overhauled offense. And he’s often times a player whose versatility puts him in places to execute a lot of “dirty work” reps that won’t show up in the stat sheet.

Sunday was a different story. And for whatever reason, Van Noy woke up sensing something special was brewing with the game plan against the Bengals. On a Monday appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’, Van Noy admitted that he told his wife the night before the game that he was going to get a “three-piece” against the Bengals.

Van Noy wasn’t kidding when he said they caught him on the mic before the game calling his shot, too. Indeed he did call his shot, and indeed he did secure three separate sacks against Cincinnati. That now gives Van Noy four sacks in his last two games and a total of six on the season.

Van Noy’s career high in sacks? Six and a half, which came last season in New England in 15 games. With four games left to play (and after missing one game already this season with an injury), Van Noy now just needs one to set a new career high. But no matter whether or not he gets home for that seventh sack, just remember that his role on this defense extends well beyond  just rushing the passer.

But if Van Noy wakes up on Sunday with a feeling in his gut, we’d probably be wise to believe him based on his performance after calling his shot on Sunday, too.

Week 13 snap counts: Lions roll out 4 down DL under Darrell Bevell

Breaking down the Detroit Lions snap counts after their Week 13 victory over the Chicago Bears.

There’s not a lot you can do to the physical makeup of a roster in a week, and for interim coach Darrell Bevell, he needed to rely on the scheme put in place by Matt Patrica — with a few twists mixed in.

On offense, there weren’t a lot of changes, which isn’t overly surprising considering he likely had some weekly influence on how much players played, but on defense, there was a noticeable change up front.

The most notable change was the use of the Lions’ base defense ends Romeo Okwara and Everson Griffen.

Over the last two weeks, the Lions relied on their linebackers to create pressure off the edge, but in this game, Bevell and defensive coordinator Cory Undlin went back to their strategy against Washington and used bigger bodies on the edge.

Okwara was on the field 96-percent of defensive snaps, while Griffen saw 65-percent of his own. Each player did rush from a standing position at times, but the idea of getting bigger up front suits this team’s strengths — especially when Trey Flowers, Austin Bryant, and Julian Okwara return.

That, and more in this week’s snap count review.

Matt Ryan: ‘Dirk does a good job of putting the plan together’

The Atlanta Falcons have now lost six of their last seven games against the New Orleans Saints.

The Atlanta Falcons have now lost six of their last seven games against the New Orleans Saints. Following Sunday’s 21-16 loss, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan spoke with the media about how the offense has fared in their two matchups against the Saints this season.

“We certainly didn’t play good enough… Walked away with too many field goals and not enough touchdowns. It’s disappointing when you play like that.”

Ryan was then asked about the team  converting just seven of 27 third downs in their two matchups against New Orleans.

“I think part of it has to do with the type of third down we were in. We needed to be in more third and short to give us better opportunities and we weren’t in those. We needed to play better”.

When pressed on what the issue is, Ryan was asked if the scheme was the problem or just the receivers’ inability to get open.

“As players, you got to look at what you can do better, we’ve all got to do that. I think certainly when they get pressure and make the ball come out before, it allows for guys to be in tighter spaces than if we had more time. So, it’s a combination of being a little better on the outside, being a better plan, little better upfront, me being a little more accurate.”

Atlanta has talented receivers on the outside and tight end Hayden Hurst has shown an ability to get open in the middle. However, the Falcons have not done a good job at getting the ball in the hands of their play-makers.

The receivers need to do a better job getting open, while the team’s offensive line, which is stacked with first-round talent, needs to hold up longer. Ultimately, it falls on the scheme. But Ryan still holds confidence in offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and this Falcons team’s offensive makeup.

“Dirk does a good job of putting the plan together and putting us in situations to be successful. I think like every week, there’s some things he would do differently and there’s things we have to do differently as players and make plays when the situations present themselves. That’s how I feel at this point.”

Ryan is not going to openly talk about whether or not he is unhappy with Dirk Koetter and his style of offense. The Falcons quarterback is smart enough to know how detrimental those comments would be in the locker room. While it may appease fans, it would make it harder for the team to do its job effectively.

When asked about the three consecutive run plays called by Koetter, Ryan again chose to hold off on passing blame to Atlanta’s play-caller. Instead, he said players need to execute better.

“We were productive on the first one. Got us into good position, second and short and then not productive with the last two runs… It’s tough. Our job is to, as players, is to execute the calls and to do our jobs and make them work. We didn’t do a good enough job there.”

Ryan seemed to follow the lead of interim head coach Raheem Morris, who was also unwilling to call out Koetter following Sunday’s abysmal offensive performance.

The Falcons take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14, then have two matchups against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one against the Kansas City Chiefs.

[jwplayer boGiTYJc-ThvAeFxT]

The Miami Dolphins are now 8-4 on the season — the first time this franchise can lay claim to such a record through 12 games since the 2003 season. And now the 2020 Miami Dolphins must look to do something that not even the 2003 team was able to do: secure a spot in the playoffs. With four games left to play, the Dolphins are currently sitting in the AFC’s No. 6 seed in the playoff field — but business is about to pick up and this team is going to have to earn their way into the postseason.

Miami’s final four opponents?

  • The 11-1 Kansas City Chiefs
  • The 6-6 New England Patriots
  • The 7-5 Las Vegas Raiders
  • The 8-3 Buffalo Bills (still to play in Week 13)

The 31-15 combined record of Miami’s final four opponents is the most difficult remaining 4-game slate in the NFL. If these Dolphins want to make the playoffs, they’re going to have to earn it.

How do the odds favor the Dolphins? FiveThirtyEight’s NFL projections do not peg the Dolphins as favorites — the team is given just a 44% chance to make the playoffs this morning based on yesterday’s NFL action, with the percentage points coming in 2% lower than they were at this time last week. So Miami’s odds fell despite winning in Week 13 against the Bengals. It’s a crowded field — but one thing that has changed is that the Tennessee Titans dropped a game to the Cleveland Browns, which puts them in contention as another team Miami can beat to the finish line if they don’t win the AFC South.

Week 14 is going to provide a lot of clarity to the playoff contenders. The Dolphins face the Kansas City Chiefs, who beat the Denver Broncos 22-16 on Sunday Night Football last night to move to 11-1. The Buffalo Bills will square off with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who care currently 11-0. If either team can steal a win, it would help their playoff and division odds immensely. The Browns play the Ravens and can all but totally eliminate Baltimore with a win, which can also be the case with the Patriots as they clash with an 8-4 Los Angeles Rams team. The 7-5 Raiders? They play the 8-4 Colts — which will keep Miami in the hunt regardless of the end result of Miami’s game against the Chiefs.

Plenty of clarity awaits. But the Dolphins will be best served keeping their eyes on the prize and trying to slay the giant that is Kansas City next Sunday.

Chiefs vs. Broncos game recap: Everything we know

A look at what we know after the Chiefs-Broncos game in Week 13.

Kansas City salted away the last six minutes of the fourth quarter en route to their eleventh win of the season, clinching a playoff berth and escaping the matchup uninjured. Rookie sensation Clyde Edwards-Helaire rode the bench for the first time in his career, albeit due to illness. The game turned out to be a grind offensively for both teams.

Field goals abounded this week, changing the pace from the high-scoring brand of football fans have become accompanied to. Mahomes had an exceptional day, and if not for a wild touchdown-called-incompletion and a brutal holding call in the third quarter, this would have been one of his most statistically impressive games of the season. The Chiefs continued their run of dominance in the AFC West, and if other games go their way in the coming weeks, they’ll be in a prime position to get the only AFC bye week in the playoffs.

The Kansas City Chiefs are 11-1 and headed to the playoffs after defeating the Denver Broncos in Week 13. There was a strange aura about this game and it seemed to impact Tyreek Hill and the offense from the get-go. The Chiefs wouldn’t be held down for long, though. The team came storming back in the second half to regain the lead from Denver, making for quite the show on “Sunday Night Football.”

Chiefs’ Players of the Game for Week 13 vs. Broncos

Here are our Players of the Game for the Kansas City Chiefs in the Week 13 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Well, the Chiefs were punched directly in the mouth early on in this game, but still managed to come out with a win. The Broncos red zone defense was the epitome of the bend-but-don’t-break mentality and forced the Chiefs to settle for five field goals rather than touchdowns. A big touchdown was called back late in the game and the Chiefs only mustered one touchdown during the entirety of the matchup. The players responded and gutted out a win.
