Why UNLV Will Win

UNLV is playing a whole lot better.

It took almost an entire season to come up with a win, but it was really, really close at times. And then came the breakthrough at New Mexico, and a win over Hawaii, and a very, very close call in a 28-20 loss to a San Diego State team that might go to the Mountain West championship.

So what’s going right?

It’s been a relatively adaptable team lately. It ran over Hawaii, it threw well on San Diego State, and overall, the run defense hasn’t been bad.

And that’s everything here. Can you stop the Air Force around game? For UNLV, the answer is … sort of.

There’s no pressure into the backfield, but the D line is just good enough to hold up, and …

Why Air Force Will Win

The running game was already the best in college football and then it went up a whole other level.

It took a few overtimes to survive Nevada, but the Falcons got the job done last week to keep hope alive to play for the Mountain West championship.

UNLV does a lot of things well to keep Air Force from going ballistic, but it doesn’t handle the surprise downfield pass plays well – Air Force might never throw, but it leads the nation in yards per completion – and it’s just not good enough on third downs.

What’s Going To Happen

This might be a whole lot more interesting than you’d think.

UNLV doesn’t get flagged a whole lot – that matters against an Air Force team that never gets hit with penalties.

The Rebel run defense really is good. It got run over a bit by New Mexico, but the D hasn’t allowed 300 yards of total offense in the last three games, and that includes holding San Diego State to under 100 yards on the ground.

Air Force kept its Mountain West title hopes alive with the win over Nevada. Now, if it wins, and if Boise State beats San Diego State and Utah State beats New Mexico – both games will be finishing up just as this gets going – Air Force takes the Mountain Division with a win.

Or, it’s in with a win and a Utah State loss.

Just getting by UNLV will be difficult enough, but things will open up just enough in the second half to put this away.

Why USF Will Win

Can the Bulls do it for a second year in a row?

They were lousy all of 2020, they didn’t win a game over an FBS team, and … they didn’t beat UCF either in the season finale. However, they rolled up 646 yards in a wildly entertaining 58-46 loss.

They’re not a whole lot better this time around, but they at least have two wins – one over an FBS team, Temple – and they’ve shown a few sparks.

The offensive line hasn’t been all that awful, the ground game has been decent at times, and the beleaguered secondary should catch a little bit of a break against a UCF passing game that doesn’t do much of anything down the field.

Why UCF Will Win

Is Dillion Gabriel returning? The star quarterback went down with a broken collarbone early in the season, and there were just enough rumblings that he might return to make it a topic of conversation.

He probably won’t be able to go, but the Knights shouldn’t need him. They should be able to blast away at will on the porous USF run defense, balancing things out with the midrange passing attack shouldn’t be an issue, and the D has the ability to get behind the line and bother everything the USF O wants to do.

Yeah, UCF’s offensive front is a tad leaky, but there’s no pass rush whatsoever coming from the Bulls.

Turnovers. USF gives up lots and lots and lots of turnovers with 12 in the last four games.

UCF isn’t bad at forcing mistakes. It’ll come up with a few and get points off them, but it’ll be the running game – with a good rotation around smallish speedster Johnny Richardson – that will take over in the second half to pull away.

The Tigers weren’t anything special in the 24-23 win, but they got the W, they’re bowl eligible, and Dan Mullen got whacked.

Pulling this off against Arkansas starts with the pass rush. The Hog offensive line gives up plays in the backfield, and Mizzou has to get to KJ Jefferson just enough to keep him from getting comfortable.

The offense has to get the ground game going early – the team is 5-0 when running for 200 yards – and banged up QB Conor Bazelak has to at least his his third down throws because …

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas keeps on coming.

It might not always be dominant, and it hasn’t come close to playing the same type of game twice in a row, but at least the O is consistently good at being balanced.

Missouri’s run defense can be blasted on – it starts there. Arkansas wasn’t able to get things going on the ground against LSU or Alabama, but it was able to control the Mississippi State game well enough to get by.

Missouri dinks and dunks with its passing game, but it’s not as effective at it as Mississippi State.

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas might have lost to Alabama, but that was a great fight with the team battling and battling some more to make it interesting. However, there’s little margin for error here coming off that tough fight.

It was +3 in turnover margin against LSU, and it only won 16-13. It was mistake-free against Mississippi State, and it was still a fight. It blinked in the 52-51 loss to Ole Miss by being -2 in turnovers – and still almost won.

Missouri isn’t quite explosive enough of consistent enough on both sides of the ball to handle an Arkansas team that might not have a ton of high-end talent, but it does a whole lot of things right.

Cincinnati vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Now that’s the Cincinnati we’ve all been waiting for over the second half of the season.

SMU isn’t all that great, but it had a great record and a strong offense, and Cincinnati ripped it all apart in a dominant 48-14 win that was even better than the final score.

Now the Bearcats are No. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, they’re getting some measure of respect for being one of three unbeaten teams left in college football, and now the possibility of getting into the tournament really does exist.

However, while the Power Five teams in the CFP mix are all playing monster matchups, anything less than amazing will do – and it’s possible if QB Desmond Ridder continues to play like he has over the last few weeks. For all the concerns and mediocrity at times, the O has kicked it all in with way over 1,000 yards over the last two weeks.

On the other side, the Bearcat defense leads the American Athletic Conference in tackles for loss, the secondary has been a rock, and the takeaways have been coming in key spots. Now it goes against an East Carolina offense that struggles in pass protection and gives the ball away too much.

The Pirate offense turned it over two or more times in five straight games before finally cutting off the mistakes in last week’s win at Navy.

Why East Carolina Will Win

East Carolina expects big things at home when people are paying attention.

It hasn’t always been a rock of a home team, but it pulled off a stunner in a 2016 home win over NC State, destroyed North Carolina in 2018, dominated a decent SMU squad last year, and …

This matters, why, in 2021?

It only seems like QB Holton Ahlers has been around for all of them – he did run for two scores, though, against North Carolina.

The longtime Pirate passer is coming off one of his best games in four years – hitting 85% of his throws for over 400 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Navy. He was fantastic in the 2019 shootout loss to Cincinnati, but was totally miserable in last year’s game.

Playing Cincinnati is hardly new for him.

He’s got the pieces around him to make this work. The Pirates have a running game to control the tempo – they keep the ball for close to 33 minutes – and the defense is good enough on third downs to make up for a slew of other issues.

Just keep getting off the field, feed off the energy of the crowd in this, and hope for Ahlers to use his experience to handle what’s coming.

What’s Going To Happen

SMU was never going to be the problem for Cincinnati.

It was an enough-is-enough moment for the Bearcats, it was Senior Day at home, and it was a game ripe for a blowout. This, though, is dangerous.

The bigger issue is against Houston in the American Athletic Conference Championship, but the Pirates have just the right blend of offensive balance, a defense that can hold serve, and the home side of things to make this interesting.

Cincinnati will come through when it has to.

It’ll get off to a hot start thanks to a few ECU mistakes, but slowly the game will get tighter. Just as it seems like the upset is coming, though, two late scoring drives will keep the dream alive.

Once again, Ridder will be fantastic.

UTEP got its groove back after a three-game losing stretch with Gavin Hardison and the passing game going off in the win over Rice.

The Miner offense hits a whole slew of big plays down the field, but it’s also able to control the clock thanks to a defense that’s great at getting off the field. This isn’t normal for the program.

One of the best stories of the year, UTEP is going bowling, it’s interesting, and it’s got a good enough team in place to win a game like this against a strong UAB team.

The Blazer pass defense will give up big plays here and there, there are a TON of penalties, and there’s a little too much inconsistency for a team this good, but …

Why UAB Will Win

The Blazer running game should be able to pound a bit.

UTEP has been great on the defensive front throughout the season, but that’s partly because it hasn’t played a whole slew of teams with nasty ground attacks.

UAB ran for 200 yards or more in three of the last five games, was well balanced in the 34-31 loss to UTSA last week, and it should all click at home.

As good as the UTEP offense has been at times, and even with the good passing game that can explode, the offense doesn’t score a ton for all the positives. It only managed 13 on Boise State and 23 against UTSA in the blowout loss – it’s done a lot of scoring against bad teams.

UAB’s defense is nasty against the run and leads Conference USA in total yards allowed, so …

UAB might not win the Conference USA championship, but now it’s about jockeying for a good bowl position.

Why Iowa Will Win

It’s Nebraska. It’ll find a new, creative, and brutally painful way to lose this game.

It’s become the brand for the 2021 Huskers – play well, battle hard, get right there with a chance to win, and then … nope.

It’s absolutely insane. The Huskers have lost five in a row all by a touchdown or less – getting totally hosed on a missed pass interference call in the final moment last week in the 35-28 loss at Wisconsin – and all eight defeats were by eight points or fewer.

However, good teams win tight games – that’s part of the deal.

Iowa is back to taking the ball away with five turnovers forced over the last three games to get to No. 2 in the nation in turnover margin. There aren’t any penalties, there’s at least a little hope for a passing game with Alex Padilla coming up with a good game against Minnesota – if he starts; we’ll just blow off last week’s 6-of-17 day last week against Illinois – and the defense continues to be tough when it has to be. But …

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska’s offense just lit up what was the nation’s No. 1 defense.

Wisconsin was allowing just 215 yards per game before last week, but Adrian Martinez and the passing game went off for a season-high 351 yards. Martinez was decisive, he was making plays on the move, and he came really, really close to pulling off the upset.

Iowa’s defense might be terrific, but it hasn’t exactly faced a who’s who of high-octane passing quarterbacks.

Purdue can throw – and it ripped apart the Hawkeye defense for 378 yards in the win in mid-October. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy threw for over 250 yards, and that’s been about it, again, because the D hasn’t been pushed enough.

All of a sudden, though, the Hawkeyes have allowed 220 passing yards or more in four of the last five games.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa can put the pressure on.

If it wins, it goes to the Big Ten Championship if Minnesota beats Wisconsin. If it loses, the battle for the Paul Bunyan Axe will be to see who gets the Michigan-Ohio State winner.

Nebraska will do the Gophers and Badgers a solid.

The Iowa offensive line just isn’t good enough for the running game, and the passing attack won’t get the job done late to counter a fantastic season finale by Martinez.

The New Mexico offense still doesn’t work.

At all.

One score might just do it, and that’s not an exaggeration. The Lobos haven’t scored more than 17 points in any of the last nine games and only scored more than 14 in one of those – a loss to UNLV.

They’re last in the nation in scoring offense, total offense, and they’re about to make a big push in the final days to be dead last in passing after failing to get to 37 yards through the air in any of the last three games.

The Utah State defense is hardly special – it just got destroyed by Wyoming 44-17 in one of the weirdest under-that-radar blowouts of the year – but that’s not about to happen again.

Really, Utah State? What was that?

So good and so strong all through the second half of the season, the Aggies collapsed against Wyoming allowing 362 rushing yards and over 600 yards of total offense.

The New Mexico attack has shown a few moments of rushing ability, the secondary hasn’t been totally awful – it did a decent job against Boise State last week – and there’s just a wee bit of a pass rush to be a bother.

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan will close out with a bang, making a statement that it might just be the second-best team in the MAC if Northern Illinois goes on to win the MAC Championship.

Both teams are bowl eligible with solid seven-win seasons – NIU is currently the only other MAC team with seven or more wins – so the pressure is off. This is just for a little bit if in-state MAC pride.

Central Michigan’s offense will be more effective, but the Eastern Michigan passing attack will make this a whole lot of fun.

Why Kansas State Will Win

Now it’s time to shoot for a stronger bowl appearance.

Texas is having a few issues.

It’s banged up, it’s not tackling well, it’s not cranking out enough consistency through the air, and the season that looked so promising in early October will end up being a total disaster.

The Texas run defense has been a problem, the pass defense has gone bye-bye, and Kansas State should be able to generate enough from RB Deuce Vaughn – on a run of four straight 100-yard running games to matter.

As long as the Wildcats win on the lines like they have for most of the year, they should be okay. But …

Why Texas Will Win

Can QB Skylar Thompson go? He got knocked out of the Baylor game with an ankle injury, and the passing game isn’t close to the same without him.

Will Howard and Jaren Lewis are capable, but Thompson is the veteran who can take over the game.

Yes, Texas is having issues, but the ground attack was great against West Virginia without Bijan Robinson, the O should be able to throw for well over 200 yards, and as bad as things have been, the pressure is sort of off.

What’s Going To Happen

All might not be lost for Texas.

Depending on how many openings there are for bowl slots – there should be at least three, maybe four – without enough eligible teams, 5-7 Texas can still be in the mix. Thanks to a good Academic Progress Rate, there’s a very, very remote shot at a bowl by going 5-7, but for now, just closing with a win would be good enough.

It all depends on Thompson. If he’s his normal self, Kansas State wins. He doesn’t appear to be close to 100%, though.

Texas salvages something out of this rough run.
