Iowa vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

It doesn’t really matter, but Iowa might be the most disrespected team in college basketball right now.

It’s barely ranked despite winning five of its last six games including dominant wins over Ohio State, Michigan State, and …

Nebraska.

The Hawkeyes rolled 98-75 a few weeks ago by nailing well over half of their shots, doing a great job on the free throw line, and canning ten threes. But that’s what they do.

Nebraska doesn’t rebound, it doesn’t hit from three, and there are way too many fouls. On the flip side, Iowa doesn’t turn the ball over – it’s second in the nation behind Wisconsin in fewest mistakes – and it’s fourth in scoring averaging close to 84 points per game.

Nebraska can’t keep up, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Nebraska Will Win

Okay, so what are the Huskers doing right lately?

They’ve lost 13 of their last 14 and 18 of the last 20, but they’re not that awful from the field, they move the ball around relatively well and get a whole lot of assists, and the defense hasn’t been bad from three lately.

It’s going to take a special offensive performance to keep up, but if the defense can get out and keep the Hawkeyes from being dominant from the outside, and if they can keep it close, there’s a chance to pull this off on the free throw line.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska won’t be able to keep up.

The Huskers not only aren’t going to be sharp enough from the field, but they’re not good enough on the offensive boards to make up for it.

They’ll have a few moments when things work, and Iowa struggles on the road going 4-5, but it’ll keep up the scoring in the second half and Nebraska won’t.

Iowa vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

It’s Nebraska. It’ll find a new, creative, and brutally painful way to lose this game.

It’s become the brand for the 2021 Huskers – play well, battle hard, get right there with a chance to win, and then … nope.

It’s absolutely insane. The Huskers have lost five in a row all by a touchdown or less – getting totally hosed on a missed pass interference call in the final moment last week in the 35-28 loss at Wisconsin – and all eight defeats were by eight points or fewer.

However, good teams win tight games – that’s part of the deal.

Iowa is back to taking the ball away with five turnovers forced over the last three games to get to No. 2 in the nation in turnover margin. There aren’t any penalties, there’s at least a little hope for a passing game with Alex Padilla coming up with a good game against Minnesota – if he starts; we’ll just blow off last week’s 6-of-17 day last week against Illinois – and the defense continues to be tough when it has to be. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska’s offense just lit up what was the nation’s No. 1 defense.

Wisconsin was allowing just 215 yards per game before last week, but Adrian Martinez and the passing game went off for a season-high 351 yards. Martinez was decisive, he was making plays on the move, and he came really, really close to pulling off the upset.

Iowa’s defense might be terrific, but it hasn’t exactly faced a who’s who of high-octane passing quarterbacks.

Purdue can throw – and it ripped apart the Hawkeye defense for 378 yards in the win in mid-October. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy threw for over 250 yards, and that’s been about it, again, because the D hasn’t been pushed enough.

All of a sudden, though, the Hawkeyes have allowed 220 passing yards or more in four of the last five games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa can put the pressure on.

If it wins, it goes to the Big Ten Championship if Minnesota beats Wisconsin. If it loses, the battle for the Paul Bunyan Axe will be to see who gets the Michigan-Ohio State winner.

Nebraska will do the Gophers and Badgers a solid.

The Iowa offensive line just isn’t good enough for the running game, and the passing attack won’t get the job done late to counter a fantastic season finale by Martinez.

Just when it seems like Nebraska is going to blow it again as Iowa goes on a late march …

Why Nebraska Will Win

The running game is working.

There might be a whole slew of issues with the Huskers in their 1-3 start, but after hitting the 200-yard rushing mark five times last year, it’s been able to hit the mark in three of the first four games. It’s all coming from the quarterbacks, but at least it’s moving.

Iowa might be playing well, but the passing game still isn’t quite right. Spencer Petras is only hitting 56% of his passes with three touchdowns and four picks – Iowa has the Big Ten’s least-efficient passing game.

If the Husker run defense is able to hold up and generate third down stops, the team will be in this. However …

Why Iowa Will Win

The next meaningful Nebraska third down stop will be the first one – at least, that’s how it’ll feel.

What’s going wrong for the Huskers? Start with the issues on third downs.

Nebraska is dead last in the Big Ten in third down stops – allowing teams to connect on a whopping 54% of their chances – and it’s dead last at converting, too, hitting at a mere 32% clip.

Iowa is doing a great job of forcing takeaways, the pass defense has been a rock, and the pass rush is terrific. The Hawkeye defensive front should own an okay but inconsistent Husker offensive front.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa is in a good groove.

The defense has yet to allow more than 145 rushing yards, and the Huskers don’t have the passing game to keep things moving when their ground attack stalls.

It’ll be a spirited effort by Nebraska, and the offense will come up with two sharp drives that makes it look like everything is about to roll, but Iowa will win the turnover battle, run for over 200 yards, and will control the game in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Iowa (16-7) vs. Nebraska (7-15) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers lost seven straight and eight of the last nine. That one win …

Iowa.

How? Iowa was miserable from three against a Nebraska defense that’s not all that bad at clamping down on teams at the perimeter. There’s no fear at bombing away from three, the O can get back in games in a hurry, and it leads the Big Ten in turnover margin – it just doesn’t give the ball away.

However …

[lawrence-related id=507560]

Why Iowa Will Win

The Nebraska defense, overall, just isn’t good enough.

Iowa went dead-cold in the loss to the Huskers, and it was still close late in the 76-70 loss. As long as the offense can keep the ball moving and make the extra pass like it usually does, the points will come.

The bigger problem for Nebraska will be on the boards. It’s dead last in the Big Ten in rebounds, Iowa is just good enough on the boards to be fine, and this time around, there will be more second-chance points, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa won’t be that bad from three again like it was in Lincoln, and the defense will show up after getting its doors blown off by Purdue on Wednesday night.

This is suddenly turning into an inconsistent Hawkeye team, but at home it’ll pick it back up offensively against the struggling Husker D.
