Cal vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

It’s been an interesting time for Cal football.

Just when it was finally starting to turn things around with two nice wins over Colorado and Oregon State, it got hit with a COVID outbreak that gutted the team for its loss at Arizona.

The USC game got postponed, there was some question about the future of head coach Justin Wilcox – maybe it was time to move on, maybe the Washington gig would be a fit – and now it’s Stanford week.

As rough as things have been for the Bears, they’re playing one of the few teams that should make things easier.

Stanford has been awful since the stunning win over Oregon.

The passing game has been bad, the rushing attack worse, there’s been no run defense, and it’s getting uglier and uglier allowing close to 900 rushing yards over the last three weeks.

Cal hasn’t been great at running the ball, but it’s about to give it a go.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Stanford Will Win

It’s been an interesting time for Stanford football.

It had the team returning from 2020 to be much, much better than the Pac-12’s speed bump.

The defense never showed up – it allowed 200 rushing yards or more against everyone but USC and Washington State – the offense lost its passing game groove, and now the future of David Shaw with the program is being questioned.

As rough as things have been for the Cardinal, they’re playing one of the few teams that should make things easier.

Cal is still trying to get back up to speed. Even before the issues the defense was struggling on third downs, the offense had a rough time closing out drives with points, and the O line was struggling a bit too much. But …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford is a total mess.

The offense is bad, the defense worse, there’s a massive problem with turnovers, and it doesn’t get better from there.

Cal might not be fully functional, and it’s coming off a rough few weeks, but it’ll slug its way through with just enough of a running game against the depleted Cardinal D to pull this off.

Don’t expect pretty.

Oregon vs Utah Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Now that’s the Oregon we’ve been waiting for.

After a few rough games and mediocre performances, the Ducks start slamming away over the last few weeks with Travis Dye and QB Anthony Brown – who ran for 123 yards against Washington State – picking up the slack without CJ Verdell around.

The offense was playing physical, tough, and ready for a defense like Utah’s.

The ground attack has hit 200 yards in five of the last six games with close to 1,000 yards in the last three.

Utah might have a big, nasty defense, but it gave up over 200 yards to Oregon State, and lost. It gave up over 200 rushing yards to both BYU and San Diego State, and lost both of those games.

The team is 7-0 when it doesn’t allow 200 rushing yards, 0-3 when it does. More than that, the program is 0-for-its-last-8 – going back to early 2017 – when it allows two bills.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Utah Will Win

The Utah offensive line is crushing everything.

It took a week off against a depleted Arizona – the team only ran for 174 yards in the 38-29 win – but Cameron Rising and the passing game made up for it. Call it a bit of a rest as the team prepared for what’s coming next.

The ground game destroyed Stanford with 441 yards on the ground. It hammered UCLA for 290, and overall, the offense has been better and more efficient as the season has gone on.

Oregon’s defense is loaded with talent, but it hasn’t faced a whole lot of teams that can hammer away. UCLA can get tough, and Ohio State can move the ball, but for the most part it hasn’t dealt with a line that can pound like this.

That’s the offensive side. The defensive front is living in the backfield – it’s No. 1 in the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss – and it’s about to pressure Anthony Brown into at least one key pick.

And then there’s this …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

2016 was a lost season for Oregon, so November didn’t matter, but the 2017 team was trying to pick things back up only to lose at Washington in early November.

The terrific 2018 team was just about to go on a tear but a 32-25 November loss at Utah ended that.

The 2019 team overcame a loss to Auburn to win nine straight as it looked like it was on its way to the College Football Playoff. It went into Tempe, and it left with a 31-28 loss.

Last season season was obviously weird with the season starting on the 7th of the month, but even so the Ducks have gone six straight years with a key November loss.

This is the game the Utah program has been waiting for. This is the chance to take the South, get back to the Pac-12 Championship for the third time in four years, and keep the dream of going to the Rose Bowl alive.

It’s going to get it done with in a tough, physical performance with a few key takeaways making up for a few late stalls. Utah will get the huge win, everyone will storm the field, and the College Football Playoff will lose another key contender.

(And then Oregon will beat Oregon State and go on to win the Pac-12 Championship.)

Arizona State vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Utah hasn’t won the Pac-12 South quite yet.

Utah beat Arizona State, but if ASU can win this and take down Arizona next week – not asking for the world – it’s in the Pac-12 Championship if Utah loses to Oregon and Colorado.

But for now, just getting a tough win on the road to keep this two-game winning streak going would be a big deal.

The Sun Devils are running the ball well, rumbling over USC and Washington for over 280 yards in each game – taking the pressure off of Jayden Daniels and the passing attack.

Oregon State’s defensive front was run over by Cal and Colorado over the last few weeks – both Beaver losses – and it starts there. Pound away, keep moving the chains against one of the nation’s worst defenses on third downs, repeat.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Oregon State Will Win

Almost no one is better on third downs what Oregon State.

Fourth in the nation at keeping the chains moving, the Beavers are great at controlling the clock, the running game has been consistently dominant – running for 220 yards or more in every game but the losses to Purdue and Cal – and it all ties together for an offense that leads the Pac-12 in yards.

Arizona State’s defense has been fantastic – it leads the Pac-12 – but it can be thrown on. Everyone in the Pac-12 but Washington and Colorado were able to put up 220 yards or more on the Sun Devil secondary.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been in the 80s all week in Tempe, Arizona, with everything absolutely perfect for football on Saturday – pleasant turning the day, high 50s in the evening, and …

The game is in Corvallis. At night.

The region should get a break from the rain for a few days for clear night on Saturday, but it’s expected to be in the 30s around game time. Teams used to hot weather might say it’s all good, and then that all changes in a hurry.

That didn’t matter too much last year when Arizona State won 46-33 over the Beavers in mid-December.

Arizona State is the better team, but Oregon State owns Reser.

It’s 5-0 at home this year, 1-4 away from home, and it’s about to be just balanced enough – and just good enough against the Sun Devil running game – to keep the Pac-12 North title hopes alive if Oregon loses at Utah.

Oklahoma vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma is still good at college football.

For all of the talk about not playing anyone who was any good before going to Baylor, everything is still on the table.

Beat Iowa State, beat Oklahoma State, beat – most likely – Oklahoma State again in the Big 12 Championship, be 12-1 as a Power Five champion, get into the College Football Playoff … maybe.

Taking down the Cyclones on the road would be a strong first step into respectability, and it starts by getting the running game going again.

Baylor bottled up Caleb Williams, the line didn’t generate a push, and it’s been two games in a row without hitting 100 yards on the ground.

The O rolled for 525 yards or more in three of the four games before last week. Now it gets a Cyclone defense that got rocked by Texas Tech for over 500 yards, allowed close to 500 yards against West Virginia, and suddenly it looked beatable.

Iowa State is 0-2 when giving up 300 passing yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State might have bowed out of the Big 12 title race with last week’s loss to Texas Tech, but it should be able to do a whole lot of the same things Baylor was able to do to Oklahoma last week.

Breece Hall and the Cyclone running game stalled in the loss to the Red Raiders, but he’s still a Doak Walker Award-level back, the ground attack is still great, and OU just gave up almost 300 yards to the Baylor running game.

Yeah, the defense has had problems stopping teams from throwing over the second half of the season, but the run D remains a rock and the pass defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

This is a veteran team that’s not going to beat itself on the road. It doesn’t have turnover problems, the lines are terrific, and there aren’t a slew of penalties.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Caleb Williams and the passing game will bounce back fast.

Williams might be a bit banged up, but he’s still the playmaker who hit over 75% of his passes over the three games as a starter before Baylor, he ripped Texas Tech off over 400 yards and six touchdowns in a near-perfect game, and he’s going to get some help.

It’s the home finale before going up the road a few miles to deal with Oklahoma State. The Sooners are going to do what they do – they’ll be too sleepy for about 20 minutes – but the lines are about to come up with a big day and the run defense will show up after last week’s embarrassment.

Kansas vs TCU Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Well look at who won a Big 12 conference game.

Kansas might have been blasted by Oklahoma State and Kansas State, but it played great for a half against Oklahoma and it made Texas sad with a 57-56 overtime win.

The offense was balanced, QB Jalon Daniels was terrific, and head coach Lance Leipold and his staff have done wonders to turn around the attitude and the momentum of this program.

Meanwhile, TCU is in a holding pattern after the Gary Patterson era came to an end.

The win over Baylor in the first game post-Patterson was fun, and then reality dropped on TCU’s head with Oklahoma State running wild in a 63-17 blowout.

Kansas has been able to run a bit – it did it against Texas – and it has to get rumbling right away on a TCU defensive front that gives up yards in chunks.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why TCU Will Win

It’s not like the Kansas defense kept the Longhorn offense in check. It gave up 574 yards and 56 points after giving up close to 500 yards to Kansas State and 535 to Oklahoma State.

The Jayhawks are allowing close to 500 yards per game, they’re dead last in the nation in scoring defense, partly because they’re dead last in the nation at stopping teams on third downs, partly because they’re among the worst teams in the nation at generating any pressure into the backfield.

TCU has been painfully inconsistent, but it should finally run well for the first time in weeks, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still a bowl game to play for.

It’s a long shot after losing four of the last five games and six of the last eight, but pull off the season home finale on Senior Day, and six days later there’s a chance at Iowa State to play for a swag bag game.

Will Kansas QB Jalon Daniels – the hero of the win over Texas – play, or will he take a redshirt, as was the plan this year? He’ll play – most likely – but he doesn’t play defense.

Texas vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

There’s still talent. There’s still a bowl game to shoot for, there’s still a chance to make something out of this lost season, and there’s still enough in place to change the narrative, at least a wee bit.

The offense has been painfully inconsistent, but the passing game went off in the loss to Kansas. The defense couldn’t stop the Jayhawks, or the Cyclones, or the Bears, or the Cowboys, or the Sooners …

But West Virginia can’t run a lick lately. It couldn’t move the ball at all against Oklahoma State in a 24-3 loss, and it was stuffed by Kansas State last week.

The Mountaineers have failed to run for 100 yards in six games and lost all six. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why West Virginia Will Win

Yeah, if your defense makes Kansas look like 2019 LSU, things aren’t going all that well.

If your first year head coach has to get a vote of confidence, things aren’t going well.

If your superstar running back is injured and out for the season – Bijan Robinson is done with a dislocated elbow – things aren’t going well.

It’s not that Texas has quit, it’s just not playing well.

West Virginia should be able to control the clock, the D has the ability to get behind the line and force a whole lot of mistakes, and the offense should be able to move with a good balance against a defense that’s getting ripped apart way too easily.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

4-6 is in the eye of the beholder.

West Virginia has lost two straight, but it gets the home finale against a dead Texas team walking before going to Kansas with a chance to get bowl eligible.

Texas has lost five straight, and it has to beat West Virginia on the road and take care of a pesky Kansas State team to get bowl eligible.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense continues to be dominant.

The offense took over against TCU with a stunning day from the ground attack – running for 447 yards in the 63-17 win – but it’s the defense that has the team in the mix for the Big 12 championship and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

It’s the best in the nation at getting into the backfield, which is part of the reason why it’s so good on third downs. Texas Tech’s offense has been solid all season long, and it ripped up a good Iowa State D last week, but this is something different.

Oklahoma State has the ability to control the clock, set the tempo, and if the running is close to as strong as it’s been over the last few weeks, the team should be able play this exactly like it wants to.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Yeah, Oklahoma State hasn’t really seen anything like this O yet.

It stuffed a Texas team that was just starting to leak oil, and it’s been able to stop Iowa State, and Kansas State, and Boise State, but this isn’t the Big 12 of a few years ago. No one’s playing offense in the league at a high level other than Oklahoma – at least when things are clicking.

Texas Tech has the balance with a ground attack that Oklahoma State at least has to pay attention too, but it’s the emergence of freshman Donovan Smith that cranked things up a few notches.

The 6-5, 230-pounder can run a little bit, he’s deadly accurate – connecting on 78% of his throws over his two main appearances – and he’s pushing the ball down the field enough to matter.

However …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State really does have the defense to give Texas Tech issues.

Smith might be a burgeoning star, but Oklahoma State should be able to generate just enough pressure to hurry him a little bit, the secondary has outstanding, and the team will run just enough to get through a trap of a game before dealing with Oklahoma in Stillwater.

This will be the working definition of survive and advance.

Baylor vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor is knee-deep in the mix now for the Big 12 Championship.

It might have two losses in conference play, but with the 27-14 win over Oklahoma, it’s in with wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech and with a Sooner loss to either Iowa State this week or Oklahoma State next week.

For now, dealing with Kansas State will be tough enough.

The Bears have found something special on the ground with Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner paving the way for the nation’s fourth-best rushing attack. They crushed Oklahoma for close to 300 yards, ran for close to 1,000 yards over the last four games, and now it goes against a defense that’s statistically terrific, but only faced one truly strong ground attack.

Kansas State allowed 210 yards to Iowa State and Breece Hall back in mid-October, and lost by 13. The team might be on a four-game winning roll, but that’s after losing to three of the four Big 12 stars, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Iowa State.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Kansas State Will Win

The Wildcat run defense really is that good.

Yes, the schedule hasn’t been quite as nasty over the last month, but the Wildcats haven’t allowed more than 17 points in any of the last three games, held down Texas Tech, and it’s been good enough to stay in every game, even the three losses.

It’s not that Baylor can’t throw – it lit up West Virginia and it’s been efficient when needed – but it wants to rumble on the ground.

No, it hasn’t faced any ground games as strong as Baylor’s, but any time you’re allowing fewer than 160 rushing yards in eight of ten games you’re doing something right. Oklahoma State and Iowa State were the only two teams to get over 400 yards, and now Baylor has to be ready to get into a brawl.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State has flown a bit under the radar.

It bowed out of the Big 12 title chase with a three-game losing streak in the middle of the season, and then it quietly started winning again to keep the potential alive for a ten-win season.

But Baylor’s defense was able get out against a strong BYU, it was able to roll by West Virginia, shock Oklahoma, and …

Baylor lost at TCU, it lost at Oklahoma State, and the two road wins were in a struggle over Texas State – at least a wee bit of one – and in a blowout over Kansas.

Kansas State will come up with a terrific performance in the home finale.

Minnesota vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Big Ten title is realistically out of the picture now – basically, the Gophers need Nebraska to win its last two games and Iowa has to lose this week to Illinois – but bowl eligibility is locked in, there’s a chance to finish with a strong nine-win season, and after a rough two games, it’s a shot at a win.

Indiana is … struggling.

It has yet to win a game over a Power Five program – Cincinnati CFP backers hate that fun-fact – the turnovers are flowing, there’s nothing happening on third downs, and it’s been ugly with blowout losses to Ohio State, Michigan, and Rutgers over the last month.

Minnesota might not be crushing offensively, but the line should be able to pound away, the team should dominate the time of possession battle, and this isn’t the type of Hoosier team that should pose a big threat, but …

Why Indiana Will Win

Minnesota’s offense has stalled over the last two weeks.

It couldn’t run against Illinois, it couldn’t come through in key spots against Iowa, and there’s just enough missing to potentially mess this up.

There’s a win over Purdue, but that’s about it. There won’t be enough big plays happening through the air, the depleted backfield should have a few issues against a defense that hasn’t been all that bad against the run and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Senior Day. It’s the one chance to make something positive happen out of this shocking mess of a season. Beating Purdue next week would make the year, but the Hoosiers need a home victory.

The problem is an offense that just can’t get going, scoring 15 points or fewer in five of the last six games.

The slow and stodgy style of Minnesota will work. It’ll dominate the clock by dominating the lines. Rutgers was able to run for over 200 yards last week on the Hoosiers, and the Gophers are about to do the same.

Nebraska vs Wisconsin Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

It’s a rested team with absolutely no pressure to deal with.

The coaching situation is settled for now – Scott Frost is getting another year, at least – and there’s no bowl game to play for … maybe. That’s a whole conversation for a different day if the Huskers can get to 5-7, but nah, there’s no bowl game to play for.

It’s job now is to play the role of spoiler.

It might be yet another lost year for the Nebraska program, but it’s not playing all that poorly. All of the losses in the run of six in the last seven games were relatively close, and all seven losses on the year were by nine points or fewer.

Now it’s rested after the Ohio State game, the offense has to figure out that the way to beat the Wisconsin D is with the deep shot – Nebraska leads the Big Ten in yards per completion – and the defense has to get the Badgers to third down.

The Wisconsin passing game doesn’t work, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Badger defense continues to be the best in the country at a historic level.

Allowing only 216 yards per game, Wisconsin is walking in 2011 Alabama territory when it comes to the best defenses of the last 20 years. It starts with a linebacking corps that’s playing among the best in America and should swarm all over Adrian Martinez and anything the Nebraska offense tries to do on the ground.

Offensively, it’s the Braelon Allen show. The 17-year-old true freshman has rumbled for over seven yards per carry with six straight 100-yard days over the winning streak.

There needs to be a pitch count – the Badgers are way too thin at running back with Chez Mellusi out – but he’s been slippery, tough, and it’s all working behind an offensive line that’s in a lather.

However …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

The Nebraska run defense has been solid.

It allowed over 200 yards to Michigan, and that’s been about it. Oklahoma and Minnesota were able to run relatively well, but not enough to pull away and take over the respective games.

Nebraska will force Graham Mertz and the Badgers to start throwing a little bit. The passing attack hasn’t been hidden – it wasn’t bad against Rutgers and Northwestern – but it only works if the running game is rumbling.

Nebraska will manage to keep this close, it’ll have its chances to take over and pull off something special, and then …

It won’t.

On brand, the Huskers will have that one ill-timed penalty, turnover, or other gaffe to just miss out on the win … again.
