Arizona State vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

Utah hasn’t won the Pac-12 South quite yet.

Utah beat Arizona State, but if ASU can win this and take down Arizona next week – not asking for the world – it’s in the Pac-12 Championship if Utah loses to Oregon and Colorado.

But for now, just getting a tough win on the road to keep this two-game winning streak going would be a big deal.

The Sun Devils are running the ball well, rumbling over USC and Washington for over 280 yards in each game – taking the pressure off of Jayden Daniels and the passing attack.

Oregon State’s defensive front was run over by Cal and Colorado over the last few weeks – both Beaver losses – and it starts there. Pound away, keep moving the chains against one of the nation’s worst defenses on third downs, repeat.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Oregon State Will Win

Almost no one is better on third downs what Oregon State.

Fourth in the nation at keeping the chains moving, the Beavers are great at controlling the clock, the running game has been consistently dominant – running for 220 yards or more in every game but the losses to Purdue and Cal – and it all ties together for an offense that leads the Pac-12 in yards.

Arizona State’s defense has been fantastic – it leads the Pac-12 – but it can be thrown on. Everyone in the Pac-12 but Washington and Colorado were able to put up 220 yards or more on the Sun Devil secondary.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been in the 80s all week in Tempe, Arizona, with everything absolutely perfect for football on Saturday – pleasant turning the day, high 50s in the evening, and …

The game is in Corvallis. At night.

The region should get a break from the rain for a few days for clear night on Saturday, but it’s expected to be in the 30s around game time. Teams used to hot weather might say it’s all good, and then that all changes in a hurry.

That didn’t matter too much last year when Arizona State won 46-33 over the Beavers in mid-December.

Arizona State is the better team, but Oregon State owns Reser.

It’s 5-0 at home this year, 1-4 away from home, and it’s about to be just balanced enough – and just good enough against the Sun Devil running game – to keep the Pac-12 North title hopes alive if Oregon loses at Utah.

Why Arizona State Will Win

The offensive balance is impressive.

The running game might not have been great against UCLA, and the passing attack didn’t do much against USC, but on the year, the Sun Devils have rushed for 682 yards and thrown for 638.

There isn’t a big body of work, but the running game is the best in the Pac-12, the passing attack hits a whole lot of big plays down the field, and there isn’t a problem keeping the chains moving.

On the flip side, Oregon State’s defense isn’t doing a lot down the field with the passing game, the defense isn’t great on third downs, and there aren’t a lot of plays in the backfield from the defensive front.

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State isn’t going to turn the ball over seven times like Arizona did.

Arizona State has been great at forcing mistakes, coming up with four takeaways against USC and turning the lights out fast with big defensive plays against Arizona. Oregon State will turn it over a bit – giving it up six times in six games – but it hasn’t been a massive problem.

Beaver star RB Jermar Jefferson missed the Utah game and was held in check last week by Stanford, but he should be able to rumble a bit against an Arizona State defense that doesn’t get destroyed against the run, but allows over four yards per carry. He’s still banged up a bit, though, and …

What’s Going To Happen

This is a dinged up Oregon State team, even after a shortened season.

The problem is on the Beaver defensive front. The offensive line has been fine, but the defense is about to have a problem with an Arizona State offensive front that’s going to plow away for over 200 rushing yards.

It’s not going to be all that cold for the team from Tempe, but it’s supposed to rain in Corvallis. Arizona State’s O will be just fine.

Why Arizona State Will Win

The offense is expected to get its guy back with QB Jayden Daniels likely to go after missing the USC game. Now it needs its running back to go off.

Eno Benjamin hasn’t found a whole lot of room for a running game that’s hit the skids. A fantastic goal line runner, he hasn’t rushed for a touchdown in the last three games, and he’s had just 98 yards over the last two games after three straight 100-yard performances.

The Oregon State run defense can be hammered on – allowing 245 yards or more in three of the last five games – and controlling the tempo and the clock is a must. The Sun Devil defense has been getting worse as the season has gone on, and it needs Benjamin and company to keep the chains moving, and it has to come up with a few key takeaways on the road.

ASU is second in the Pac-12 in turnover margin – helped by 16 takeaways – and Oregon State doesn’t force mistakes. The Beavers need to get this into a little bit of a shootout, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Arizona State secondary is having a few problems.

After starting the season allowing just seven points in each of the first three games – and surviving a few big passing days – the Sun Devils have been hit way too hard by the better quarterbacks on the slate.

They lost in a shootout to Steven Montez and Colorado – giving up 337 yards through the air – and were expectedly hit hard by Washington State. The 477 yards and four scores allowed last week to USC was a problem, and letting UCLA’s Doran Thompson-Robinson to to hit close to 70% of his passes wasn’t okay.

Luton had a rough day against Washington – throwing for 88 yards in the loss – but when he’s on and the deep ball is working, Oregon State wins.

The Beavers are 3-0 when Luton averages 11 yards or more per past, and 1-5 when he doesn’t. Arizona State is 0-4 – all four losses – when it has allowed eight yards or more per pass.

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has been been great on the road lately and awful at home. Playing Utah and Washington in Corvallis has been part of the reason.

The Beaver offense will generate just enough balance and downfield plays to keep the struggling ASU defense on its heels. Neither team does much to control the clock, and at home, the Beaver O will have just a bit more of a spark in what should be a fun game with a whole slew of wild mood swings.
