Twitter had fun with a few player arrivals on Saturday at 2023 U.S. Open, including Dustin Johnson walking in with The Great One

Saturday at the U.S. Open is off to a great start.

The third round of the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club is underway and the leaders have arrived at the golf course.

The early noise is coming from Tom Kim, who posted a 6-under 29 on the front nine and birdied the par-4 10th to get to 7 under on his day. He may need a few more, but the golf course is only getting tougher as it dries out so he should be right in the mix Sunday if continues to play well.

Twitter had some fun with a few player entrances Saturday, including Sam Bennett arriving to the course with a freshly-shaven look.

U.S. OPEN: Leaderboard | How to watch

Here are some of the best entrances from players before the third round of the U.S. Open.

A salty Wayne Gretzky was the best thing about the Panthers-Hurricanes 4OT game

The GOAT was SALTY on the air.

Wayne Gretzky is obviously the GOAT of hockey, no doubt about it.

And there he was, sitting on the air for TNT’s hockey coverage, toughing it out with the rest of the crew as the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers played nearly FOUR full overtimes before Matthew Tkachuk ended the 3-2 game with a goal and walk-off celebration.

Gretzky was a little bit saltier than usual, which makes sense. Dude is 62 years old and this game just won’t end. It was late and he was probably tired. But it was fun to see him roast the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs a bit:

Now that Alex Ovechkin has reached 800 goals (!), when will he catch Wayne Gretzky?

If Ovi keeps this up, it’s going to happen.

Alex Ovechkin continues to be an unreal goal-scorer, and age is nothing but a number for him.

He scored a hat trick on Tuesday night, and with goal No. 3 on the night against the Chicago Blackhawks, he notched 800 goals in his unbelievable career.

Next is Gordie Howe (801). And after that? He’s got his eyes set on Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals.

So when could he do that?

First, you have to assume that he stays healthy as his chase continues. Let’s use last year’s number of 77 games played (in which he scored 50 times!) as what he’ll play this year, which would put him around 49 goals (AT AGE 37!!). That gets him to 829.

Let’s do 77 games again and maybe guess that he takes a slight step back … how does 40 goals sound? We get to 869.

That means he’d need “just” 26 goals at age 39 to pass Gretzky in 2024-25.

That was extremely unscientific, but he’s 94 goals away. As long as he keeps playing at even 85 percent of the level he’s playing at right now, he’s got more than a shot.

Zach Wilson, C.J. Uzomah enjoyed their stay at Gozzer Ranch with Wayne Gretzky

Zach Wilson, C.J. Uzomah enjoyed their stay at Gozzer Ranch with Wayne Gretzky:

The New York Jets had a contingency of players get together for a hangout with NHL great Wayne Gretzky for some workouts prior to training camp.

Gretzky wasn’t exactly running the practice sessions, the two groups just ended up near the same area, Gozzer Ranch, in Idaho. Two Jets players who got to meet “The Great One” included quarterback Zach Wilson and tight end CJ Uzomah.

At the start of New York’s training camp this week, Wilson reflected on meeting the hockey legend.

“Gretzky has a house there,” Wilson said via video conference. “It was a good time.”

Again, it wasn’t all fun and games even though Wilson referenced Gretzky’s place having a pool. Uzomah mentioned via the Net York Post how it was a good experienced for him to get to know his new teammates better and build some chemistry with his QB.

Specifically on Wilson, Uzomah is impressed early.

“I forget what it’s like to be a young football player, let alone a young quarterback going into his second year in New York. I know he’s talented as anything, he’s smart as anything … he’s got a — I’m trying so hard not to gush — he’s got a freaking cannon as an arm,” Uzomah said. “He’s a good dude, he wants this team to go, and he knows it goes as he goes. He’s really working his butt off to make sure we are where we need to be.

Zach Wilson met Wayne Gretzky at a workout with teammates in Idaho

While training with teammates in Idaho, Zach Wilson met Wayne Gretzky. The Great One shared a photo of the two on Instagram.

Zach Wilson was training with teammates in Idaho recently as the Jets get ready for training camp to open later this month. And while working out up there, Wilson came across one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky shared a photo of himself and Wilson on Instagram, saying how great it was to meet Wilson and watch him practice with his teammates. Gretzky called him “a great young man” and wished the Jets luck this upcoming season.

Wilson enters Year 2 with high expectations, and he’s obviously not taking this season lightly. He’s been working out all offseason and it’s great to see him training with his teammates away from the facility before camp starts.

Hopefully that will lead to some more chemistry with his receivers, and perhaps Gretzky shared some words of wisdom with the young quarterback.

Wayne Gretzky hilariously recreated his famous hockey quote from The Office

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!

It was only a matter of time before Wayne Gretzky publicly responded to Michael Scott’s infamous television misquote.

Ahead of Thursday night’s slate of 2022 Stanley Cup Playoff games on TNT, hockey fans were treated to an unexpected surprise from The Great One himself. Before Game 2 of the New York Rangers versus Pittsburgh Penguins series, the NHL on TNT Twitter account posted a picture of Gretzky standing next to the Stanley Cup and holding a poster with a very familiar quote on it.

The quote? “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Wayne Gretzky – Michael Scott – Wayne Gretzky.” Yes, the hilarious moment — and often-used meme — from The Office has been recreated by Gretzky himself!

You absolutely love to see it!

Wayne Gretzky offered Andrew Whitworth advice as he contemplates retirement

Andrew Whitworth is likely retiring after winning a Super Bowl with the Rams, but Wayne Gretzky’s advice is making this a tough call

Ever since training camp began before the 2021 season, it almost seemed like a given that Andrew Whitworth would retire when the season concluded. And with Whitworth being able to go out on top with a Super Bowl win in his fifth year with the Los Angeles Rams, the odds of him calling it quits seemingly increased.

During a recent appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show, Whitworth admitted that he’s leaning toward retirement. However, he’ll wait another couple of weeks before making an official decision

On NFL Network, Whitworth revealed that he received some advice from Wayne Gretzky when the hockey legend called him after the Rams won the Super Bowl. Gretzky didn’t necessarily push Whitworth to return, but he did point out that the only thing better than winning one title is winning two.

“I’ll never forget after we won the game, ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky called me, cause I live out here near him in Sherwood (California),” Whitworth said, via NFL.com. “He was like, ‘Hey Whit, there’s only one thing better than winning one, and that’s winning two.’ And I said, ‘You know what, I can’t argue with you.’ It’s gonna be tough. One way or another it’s gonna be a tough decision.”

During his 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals to begin his career, Whitworth never got close to winning a Super Bowl. In his first four years with the Rams, the team got close multiple times (including a Super Bowl appearance in 2018), but they were unable to get the job done.

It was another spectacular year for Whitworth in 2021 as he turned 40 years old while still cementing himself as one of the best left tackles in the NFL. While he had four Pro Bowl appearances and two All-Pro nods on his resume already, Whitworth was only missing a Super Bowl ring to strengthen his case for Canton.

After another deep push in the playoffs, Whitworth was able to help defeat his former team in the Super Bowl, giving him what would be a storybook ending to a remarkable career. Even though he is likely going to retire, the veteran offensive tackle admits that the idea of chasing another ring in 2022 intrigues him.
