6 possible Washington nicknames after the elimination of Warriors

The Washington Football Team will have a new name and logo in early 2022. It won’t be Warriors. Here are six possibilities.

It’s been a busy week as it pertains to the Washington Football Team and its impending rebrand. Team president Jason Wright recently sat down with Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post and said the new name and logo would be revealed in early 2022.

Not long after Jhabvala’s story on Wright, the team president published a memo on the team’s official website confirming the nickname “Warriors” would not be Washington’s new nickname. That had been a popular choice for some fans.

Where does Washington go now?

We’ve compiled a list of six possible nicknames for the Washington Football Team now that one of the previous favorites has been eliminated.

Keep in mind that these aren’t necessarily our top choices, but some of the names discussed over the past year.

Washington’s new name could come ‘as early as this week;’ to go by Redskins until then

Washington announced they’d retire the ‘Redskins’ name on Monday, but they’ll still use that mascot until a replacement is decided on.

The Washington Football Team announced on Monday morning that they would be retiring the former team name as they transitioned to a new mascot that would last them for the next 100 years. Both Dan Snyder and Ron Rivera are to be working closely on that decision, according to a release from the team.

So when will that decision be made? If it has already been decided, when will we officially hear about it? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it could be sometime this week.

The hold up might be a legal one, as Snyder works through a trademark battle that has been brought up. Once it was announced that the team planned to change the name, several trademarks were filed for potential names that Washington might use, all by someone outside of the organization.

In the mean time, until a new name is decided on, Washington will still go by the Redskins. Monday’s announcement was more to signify that the name would be retired once a new replacement was found, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.Β

When we will find out what that name is? Who knows. Could be as early as this week, or it might take a while.

Report: Washington name change to come ‘sooner than later’

The Washington name change is likely to come in the next few days, with many thinking it will be either the Warriors or Redwolves.

The Washington Redskins are reportedly close to announcing a new team name, which could likely happen within the next week.

According to a report from ESPN’s John Keim, the name change could come ‘sooner than later.’

The Washington Redskins are close to having a new name “sooner than later”, a source said Saturday night. Earlier in the day Yahoo’s Charles Robinson reported a name could be announced within 24 to 48 hours. After Washington announced July 3 it would review its name, the feeling was it would be a quicker process. Multiple sources said owner Dan Snyder had started talking to the league about this three weeks ago. Snyder had once wanted an Arena League team, intending to call them the Warriors.

The official name is obviously not yet known, but a lot of speculation has led fans to believe that it is either between the Warriors or Redwolves at the moment. The fan vote seems to favor the Redwolves, while Snyder has a history with the Warriors name that has included trademarks.

Add Kevin Durant, Dwayne Haskins to list of people in favor of ‘Redwolves’

Both Haskins and D.C. Superfan Kevin Durant seem to be in favor of the Redwolves concept for a new name in Washington.

Looks like you can now add both Dwayne Haskins and Kevin Durant to the list of people in favor of the Washington Redwolves concept that has been circulating social media for the past week or so as the team looks for a new name.

On both Twitter and Instagram, Haskins and D.C. Super-fan Durant made it known that they like the graphic created by D.C. Sports Experience and CatchTheBlitz. It may seem important that Haskins is a fan seeing as he is one of the most important players on the team, but Durant’s approval should also be of huge note, with him standing as one of the most well-known Washington fans there is.

There is not yet a timetable for when the name change will take place, but expect Redwolves to be right in the running to the very end.

‘Redwolves’ is gaining momentum among former and current Washington players

The debate for what the new team name in Washington should be is heating up, and Redwolves seems to be the leading candidate among fans.

It seems that the team name ‘Redwolves’ is picking up a lot of steam for Washington as they search for a new name going forward. With sponsors threatening the relationship, and growing outcries for the team name to change away from ‘Redskins,’ it has become apparent that the name will change at some point soon, but to what we don’t yet know.

There are a few candidates that have risen to the top, with Redwolves, Warriors, and Redtails leading the way. It appears that former Washington player Will Compton is a big fan of that idea, and current player Jonathan Allen agrees.

With an ode to an endangered native species in the southeastern United States, the Redwolves name also has a nod to the military as a helicopter squadron in the Navy Reserve. This seems to fit the criteria listed by Ron Rivera earlier in this process. Redwolves has also become a fan favorite on social media, where a petition has gained thousands of signatures lobbying fo this to be the name change.

We’ll see if Dan Snyder is listening to what his fans want.
