2022 draft: 7 receivers who could help fill Amari Cooper’s void for Cowboys

The Cowboys have huge holes in their WR depth chart. Here’s a review of who could be had throughout the draft, but all with different skill sets. | From @TimLettiero

With Amari Cooper on his way out the door for a bag of chips, it becomes increasingly likely that one or two of the Dallas Cowboys free agent group of wideouts will see a new contract within the next few days. Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson and Malik Turner all had expiring contracts when they had exit interviews in January.

This leaves WRs CeeDee Lamb, Simi Fehoko, T.J. Vasher and recent re-signee and blocking specialist, Noah Brown left as the only ones on contracts right now. In a scheme that likes to share the ball around, depth is key and it’s clear the Cowboys have some work to do to rebuild the corps. The draft remains as the best way to address the need. Here’s a look at several prospects throughout the exercises three days.

2022 scouting combine: WR measurements reveal some surprises

Here are some of the notable measurements and updates on some of the hotter WR prospects the Lions figure to be looking at in April’s draft

The first set of official weights and measurements is coming out from the 2022 NFL scouting combine. In looking at the wide receiver results, there are a few players who probably need a bit of a narrative change.

The Lions, of course, are looking hard at the receiver class. WR coach Antwaan Randle El wants the team to draft two new ones and also sign another wideout in free agency, after all. Here are some of the notable measurements and updates on some of the hotter WR prospects the Lions figure to be looking at in April’s draft.

4 mid-round slot WRs Titans should watch at NFL combine

We know the big names, but who are some lesser-known WRs the Titans should be watching at the 2022 NFL Combine?

It’s safe to say that the Tennessee Titans will have an interest in selecting a wide receiver in the 2022 NFL draft. Last season revealed the ugly truth of how anemic the Titans’ offense can be without A.J. Brown and Julio Jones in the lineup.

While both returned to the lineup in the playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Jones turned 33 last month and is coming off two injury-plagued seasons in a row.

Tennessee has a number of wide receivers set to become free agents; however, none are likely to fill the void at the slot receiver position.

There figures to be plenty of high-end wide receiver talent available at the 26th overall pick in the draft, but should the Titans decide to wait until the third round to grab a much-needed slot receiver, here are four the team could target that they should be watching at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine.

Full 7-round Saints mock draft: The pre-scouting combine edition

Full 7-round Saints mock draft: The pre-scouting combine edition, with trades

This year’s NFL scouting combine kicks off on Tuesday, so it’s a great time to get out in front of it and project what the New Orleans Saints may do in the 2022 NFL draft. So here’s my first seven-round mock draft of the offseason, where I’m going in a round-by-round simulation (The Draft Network’s tool is my preference) to see which opportunities the Saints could find on draft day. Let’s get to it.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft pre NFL combine

With the NFL combine just over a week away, here’s a 7-round mock draft for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts are still a few months away from the 2022 NFL draft but throughout the entire offseason we’ll be looking at which prospects they might consider.

The Colts are without a first-round pick due to the Carson Wentz trade so general manager Chris Ballard will have to work his magic in order to continue improving the roster.

Since we haven’t even gotten to the NFL combine yet, a lot is going to change over the next few months. We’ll get more information and learn more about these prospects, but it’s still a good idea to run through some simulations.

Using The Draft Network’s mock draft machine, here’s a seven-round mock for the Colts:

Colts grab explosive WR, sleeper QB in latest Draft Wire mock

In Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock, the Colts added an explosive WR and a sleeper QB.

The Indianapolis Colts are still months away from the 2022 NFL draft but they’ve been hard at work sculpting their draft board despite it being very early in the process.

In the latest three-round mock draft from our friends over at Draft Wire, the Colts wound up adding to the offensive side of the ball with an explosive wide receiver and a sleeper quarterback.

Without a first-round pick thanks to the Carson Wentz trade, the Colts won’t be on the board until the No. 47 overall pick in the draft. They follow that up with the No. 82. overall pick.

Here’s a look at the latest three-round mock draft from Draft Wire:

Oklahoma’s Jalil Farooq among Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded wide receivers during bowl season

Oklahoma wide receiver Jalil Farooq was one of Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded Power Five wide receivers during bowl season.

Oklahoma freshman wide receiver Jalil Farooq enjoyed his best performance of the season in the Sooners’ 47-32 win over Oregon in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Farooq led the Sooners in receiving yardage versus the Ducks with three receptions for 64 yards. The Landham, Md., native played in eight games this season.

Most of his work came on special teams, though. Prior to the Oregon game, Farooq’s only grab was against Kansas on Oct. 23 when he caught one pass for five yards.

Farooq was the second-highest graded Power Five wide receiver during bowl season with an offensive grade of 90.7 according to Pro Football Focus. That was also the highest grade any Sooner received from PFF against Oregon.

Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba earned the highest offensive grade among Power Five wide receivers during bowl season with a grade of 91.6 after his record-setting Rose Bowl performance against Utah.

Smith-Njigba hauled in a school-record 15 receptions for an FBS bowl game record 347 receiving yards. The sophomore also had three touchdown grabs in Ohio State’s 48-45 win over Utah.

Kentucky’s Wan’Dale Robinson earned an offensive grade of 90.0 from PFF after nabbing 10 grabs for 170 yards in the Wildcats’ 20-17 Citrus Bowl win over Iowa.

With Oklahoma true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams’ decision to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal, what the Sooners’ wide receivers will look like entering 2022 has been a primary topic of conversation.

Freshman wide receiver Mario Williams also entered his name into the transfer portal following his starting quarterback’s decision. Former five-star recruit Jadon Haselwood has already transferred to Arkansas.

There’s been speculation that other wide receivers could follow suit.

Farooq came to Oklahoma as a consensus four-star recruit across the four recruiting services. The 6-foot-1, 203 pound freshman was rated as the nation’s No. 109 player overall by ESPN, No. 158 by Rivals, No. 174 by 247Sports and No. 238 by On3.

If Farooq chooses to stay, his performance against Oregon is an indicator that he’s ready to step into a primary pass-catching role for Oklahoma in 2022.

Oklahoma expects to return its leading receiver from the past two seasons in Marvin Mims.

Mims caught 32 passes for 705 yards with five touchdowns this season. In 2020, Mims recorded 37 receptions for 610 yards with nine touchdowns.

The Sooners are also set to return Drake Stoops who had 16 grabs for 191 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions in 2021. Oklahoma’s other wide receivers include Brian Darby, Cody Jackson and Trevon West.

It appears that former five-star Theo Wease plans to stay at Oklahoma as well. Wease didn’t play in a game this season and has battled injuries throughout his career. During his time at OU, Wease has 45 receptions, 666 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

OU has also signed four-star wide receivers Nicholas Anderson and Jayden Gibson in its 2022 signing class. Gibson is rated as the nation’s No. 49 player overall according to Rivals, while Anderson is listed as the nation’s No. 106 player by ESPN.

LSU vs Kentucky: Two top WRs headline the ‘Tale of the Tape’

Two big-time WRs go head-to-head this weekend

With a huge matchup for both teams coming on Saturday, we dive into the WR battle. Both schools have a premier pass catcher on offense with Kayshon Boutte and Wan’Dale Robinson.

Let’s dive right into the matchup.

The Wide Receiver Tale of the Tape

Jordan Prather-USA TODAY Sports

Two of the top wide receivers will be on full display in this game on Saturday night at Kroger Field. Wan’Dale Robinson transferred from Nebraska to Kentucky and the Wildcats are taking full advantage of the transfer. Kayshon Boutte for LSU is showing that he is the next great WR down on the Bayou. After three WRs were drafted in the first few rounds the last three years, Boutte looks like he could be the next.

While Robinson can be a dynamic player, we give the edge to Boutte for a variety of reasons. He is a big-play threat and Boutte can strike at a moment’s notice.

This season he leads the SEC in touchdown receptions with nine, Cameron Latu of Alabama comes in at No. 2 with five touchdowns. Can Boutte keep his hot season going again this week against Kentucky? The Wildcats allow 180.2 yards per game and allow just over one touchdown reception per game.

Robinson will have his opportunities as well. No Derek Stingley Jr for a while due to his ankle procedure. LSU gives up the most passing yards per game in the SEC, so Will Levis and Wan’Dale Robinson will get their opportunities.

Ohio State football is back Buckeye fans! The long wait is finally over as Ryan Day and company have their eyes set on a college football crown. But before we dream of beating the Tigers and Crimson Tides of the college football world, focus has to remain steadfast on the opponent at hand… hello Cornhuskers.

The Big Ten did Nebraska no favors when handing out new schedules for a revamped 2020 season. Was it punishment for being so vocal against conference leadership and their handling of football in a pandemic? We can speculate, but the bottom line is – we’re ready to play some football!
