Here are 12 players to consider adding off the waiver wire in your fantasy football league this week.

Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season is in the books!

You know what that means … PANIC!

No, seriously, both with our real-life favorite teams and our fantasy football teams, it can be easy to overrate (both negatively and positively) to a one-game sample size to begin the season.

It’s important to not give up on a player too quickly. On the other hand, sometimes a huge Week 1 performance can later turn out to be fool’s gold. There’s a balance, one that fantasy football managers have to try to find this week as they weigh their roster options after Week 1.

To help fantasy football managers attempt to improve their rosters going into Week 2, we’ve put together a list of 12 waiver wire targets with options at running back, wide receiver, quarterback and tight end.

Each player’s rostered percentage in ESPN fantasy football leagues is listed in parentheses. Ready? Let’s get to the list!

5 recently cut players the Jaguars should consider adding

The Jaguars won’t pick through the waiver wire like previous years, but these five players could still catch their eye.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ initial 53-man roster was set Tuesday, but there are also more than 1,000 new free agents for the team to parse through.

In previous seasons, the Jaguars have picked through the waiver wire to snag new talent. This year, the team doesn’t have many holes to fill.

It seems highly unlikely that Jacksonville would consider adding any receivers or running backs, and there are really only a few spots where a newcomer could have much of a chance at earning a place. And even if the Jaguars do like a player, they’re buried in the waiver wire order.

Still, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke’s job is never really over and these five players who just hit the market could catch his eye:

18 recently cut players the Colts should consider adding

The Colts will have plenty of options to choose from on the waiver wire.

The Indianapolis Colts officially set the initial 53-man roster before Tuesday’s deadline, but more changes to the group are expected to come.

With over 1,000 players being waived and released in one fell swoop Tuesday afternoon, the Colts will have a strong chance to claim as many players as they want from the waiver wire.

They hold the No. 4 spot in the order and there’s no limit to how many claims they make as long as they can make the corresponding moves to satisfy the 53-player limit.

General manager Chris Ballard is typically a pretty active member of the waiver wire the day following roster cuts.

Here are a few names the Colts should consider adding either through free agency or through the waiver wire:

6 players cut by the Jaguars least likely to clear waivers

The Jaguars waived 27 players Tuesday. Which of those players are likely to get scooped up by another team off the waiver wire?

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived 27 players Tuesday in their effort to trim the roster from 90 players to 53.

While the team would love to have its pick of those players when it constructs its practice squad, the Jaguars’ may not be so lucky. There’s a strong chance a handful of the team’s former players won’t be available after hitting the waiver wire.

Jacksonville will only have the chance to sign players to its practice squad after every other team has decided not to put in a waiver claim. For these six players, there’s a strong chance that won’t happen:

Sean Payton explains how he wants to build Broncos’ practice squad

Broncos coach Sean Payton wants developmental players on the practice squad who have the upside to eventually reach the 53-man roster.

After waiver claims are processed on Wednesday, NFL teams can begin building 16-player practice squads to complement their 53-man rosters for the 2023 season.

After the Denver Broncos’ preseason finale last week, coach Sean Payton was asked what he’s looking for when building a practice squad.

“It’s important when you’re talking about practice squad players [to ask], ‘Are they developmental?'” Payton said. “Are they guys that you feel like have an upside curve to it? Coaches – all of us in general can be very protective and say, ‘This guy would be a perfect practice squad player.’ Well, he’s not if you don’t see an upside to become a ’53-[man roster] player.’ With the way the rules are now, there’s so much flexibility. I know it’s 53 [active roster players] and 16 [practice squad players] but I look at it much differently.

“I look at it as that’s the entire roster. We’ll put up there — once we get this roster cleaned up. We’ll put the current undrafted players that our league [has] seen in the last 20 years and guys that have been on the practice squad in the last 20 years, and it’s amazing to see [that] many of them are on big contracts now. I think there has to be a clean and correct vision for a practice squad player and I think that you’re gathering all of the information you need [to make that decision]. Every team this year will have players coming off that 16-[man practice squad] and playing significant roles.”

Last year, Denver’s initial practice squad included offensive lineman Quinn Bailey, wide receiver Kendall Hinton, defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and cornerbacks JaQuan McMillian and Essang Bassey. All five of those players spent time on game day rosters and got playing time last season. Harris could end up starting this fall and Bassey and McMillian will have important roles in the secondary.

The practice squad isn’t as glamorous as the active roster, but it can prove to be an important stepping stone for young NFL players.
