Five words kept Dan Quinn going on journey back to head coaching job

Dan Quinn is grateful for another shot at being a head coach. And he’s prepared for this.

“This is such an awesome moment,” is how Commanders head coach Dan Quinn launched his introductory press conference Monday.

No doubt the word “awesome” is used entirely too often by so many who are so easily entertained by the most simplistic music or silly video.

However, for Quinn, he had a 28-3 lead in a Super Bowl and lost it. It must have been excruciating to close the 2016 season losing in overtime to the Patriots. Quinn did lead the Falcons back to the playoffs, including winning a first-round game the next season.

Two 7-9 seasons (2018-19) followed, and when 2020 started horribly (0-5), he was fired. He landed in Dallas in 2021, serving as defensive coordinator for the last three seasons.

But Quinn had a longing, which he summarized this way Monday: “Over the past few years, there are five words that have probably tested my feet and head: ‘If I get another shot.'”

Quinn talked of how he had studied and learned in coaching, but there were also other lessons he realized that “you just have to live.” He said these are lessons that come not only through success but also adversity. “But once you learn those lessons, all you want to do is grab them and run and prove it. So let me tell you, I am ready to run and prove it, run like hell.”

“I’m a little older, maybe a little more chrome (pointing to his graying beard), hopefully a little bit wiser,” Quinn said. “But I am also incredibly grateful for all that has led me to being here.”

Indeed Quinn is not spoiled. He didn’t have the opportunity to play at an Ohio State or Alabama. He instead played at Salisbury and had to start coaching at William & Mary, VMI and Hofstra.

Quinn talked about building trust and earning the trust of others. There was no hint of entitlement. His experiences have molded him and shaped him. He is indeed grateful to be chosen as Washington’s new head coach.

Quinn has been given another shot, and now he gets to run with it.

Living through his struggles and adversity, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Therefore, Monday for Dan Quinn was indeed “awesome.”

James Madison vs VMI FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why VMI Will Win

The passing game keeps on going.

The Keydets cranked up one of the best and most efficient passing games in the nation with Reece Udinski being everything he was expected to be as a Big Ten-caliber passer – he’s expected to go to Maryland – but he suffered a torn ACL.

Seth Morgan didn’t miss a beat, hitting 76% of his passes for 1,088 yards and eight scores with just one pick, and he runs better than Udinski.

VMI (6-1) will challenge the James Madison secondary from the start, and the pass rush will be a problem on the other side. The Keydets are outstanding at getting into the backfield averaging 3.4 sacks per game. However …

Why James Madison Will Win

The James Madison (5-0) defense is one of the best in the FCS at slowing down passing games. In the five games, the Dukes allowed just 651 passing yards and three touchdowns.

It wasn’t just the pass D.

JMU allowed a grand total of 878 yards on the season, leading the FCS in total defense and second in scoring D, giving up just 9.8 points per game. How dominant was the defense? The Dukes allowed 33 points in the second quarter this season.

It allowed 16 in the other three, winning the first quarter 54-6. If VMI doesn’t get out to a hot start, forget it.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, James Madison was able to dominant defensively, and it came up with one of the strongest offenses in the FCS, too, but it’s not like it played a who’s who of powerhouses. VMI will press and make this a fight throughout.

The Keydets are used to playing tough and nasty games, and they’re not going to buckle against the pressure from the JMU defense. However, the Duke team that allowed just ten second half points this year will clamp down, and the O will get the one scoring drive it needs to finally breathe easily.

VMI (1-0) vs Western Carolina (0-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why VMI Will Win

The Keydets were able to all but shut down Furman.

They were supposed to have a good offense this season under future Maryland QB Reece Udinski, but it was the other side that took over in the 14-13 slight stunner over the Paladins with a great day from the pass rush while pitching a shutout in the second half.

On the other side, Western Carolina got trucked in its first two games in blowout losses to Furman and Samford by a combined score of 90 to 34.

Why Western Carolina Will Win

The Catamounts weren’t totally miserable in the two losses.

They’re not supposed to do a whole lot this year, but at least the offense was solid and the game against Samford was close with a. 21-20 Bulldog league at halftime, Samford rolled in the second half, but at least the WCU offense worked.

Again, the VMI defense was solid, but the offense didn’t get going with just 20 rushing yards against Furman, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The VMI running game will get going with more than 20 rushing yards against Western Carolina.

Udinski threw a pick against Furman, but he was solid when he had to be, but this week he’ll rip it on the was to a 300 yard day and a big performance for the Keydet attack.

Furman (1-0) vs VMI (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Furman Will Win

The offense should go off.

The VMI O should be fun, but the D is about to have a bad day against a Furman attack that rolled up 533 yards in the 35-7 win over Western Carolina with good balance and an explosive second quarter to put it away.

It starts with a running game led by Devin Wynn – arguably the SoCon’s best back – who tore off 106 yards in the win, but he wasn’t alone. The offensive line dominated, the defensive front allowed 109 yards, and …

Why VMI Will Win

VMI isn’t Western Carolina, likely the worst team in the SoCon.

The defense isn’t going to be anything special, but the offense is going to be a blast with future Maryland Terrapin QB Reece Udinski – he’s transferring after the season – bombing away. He’s a 6-4, 221-pound playmaker who should be able to keep things moving for the Air Raid offense.

He’s not alone with a veteran offensive line in front of him, and a good receiving corps to work with, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Keydet defense.

This won’t be the 60-21 dropkicking like the 2019 version of this, but Furman’s offense will be balanced, consistent, and will be able to keep up in the shootout. Udinski will dink and dunk his way to big yards, but there won’t be enough deep shots or running production to keep up.
