How to watch Louisiana native and former LSU QB Lindsey Scott in FCS semifinal on Friday night

Here’s how to catch former Louisiana Player of the Year in Friday night’s FCS semifinal game against North Dakota State.

A former Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year will try to punch his ticket to the FCS Championship on Friday night.

[autotag]Lindsey Scott[/autotag], who began his collegiate career at LSU, has become a prolific playmaker at Incarnate Word. He and the Cardinals are traveling north to face FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.

Scott played his high school ball at Zachary, the same place as current LSU commit [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag]. Among other stops, he also spent a couple years at Nicholls just before ending up at UIW.

Incarnate Word, the nation’s leading offense, is coming off a 66-63 shootout victory over Sacramento State where Scott totaled 385 yards and six touchdowns.

The semi-final contest will kick off at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2. According to BetMGM, North Dakota State is an 8.5-point favorite.

Things have come a little easier for the Bison, which has won both of its playoff games by two scores or more. Scott’s Cardinals have been in back-to-back one-possession battles.

The two programs haven’t met since 2014.

Holy Cross beautifully executes RB pop pass on 4th-and-short to score an epic touchdown

Trick play!

The FCS quarterfinals continued to provide on Saturday with an amazing trick play on fourth down for Holy Cross.

During the team’s game with top-ranked South Dakota State, the Crusaders executed a running back pop pass for a touchdown.

Holy Cross running back Tyler Purdy took the handoff on 4th-and-1 and found a wide-open tight end in Sean Morris. Purdy’s 27-yard touchdown strike helped give the Crusaders the lead midway through the second quarter.

Usually, it’s ill-advised to run trick plays with that little yardage between you and the first down. However, Holy Cross drew up the perfect formation, and the gamble paid off big time.

The undefeated Crusaders certainly didn’t get to where they are this season playing it safe all of the time.

Holy Cross should keep this trick play in its back pocket for next season. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

South Dakota State vs Sam Houston FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why South Dakota State Will Win

Delaware came into it FCS playoff semifinal game against South Dakota State (8-1) with one of the nation’s nastiest defenses. It allowed fewer than 240 yards per game, was a work against the run, and was a killer in pass efficiency D – it just didn’t allow much of anything.

None of it mattered in the 33-3 Jackrabbit win.

Oh sure, Delaware was its normal self when it came to controlling the clock and the tempo, but the running game didn’t go anywhere and South Dakota State managed to put the hammer down fast defensively.

The Jackrabbit running game ran just fine, QB Mark Gronowski threw two touchdown passes and didn’t make any big mistakes, and RB Pierre Strong ran for 73 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score.

But it was the defense that got the job done.

Sam Houston might be known for its flash on both sides of the ball and its being plays, but South Dakota State has the lines to not only hold up, but to dominate with power. The Bearkats are going to throw, and they’re going to be effective, but Delaware was able to throw well and it didn’t matter.

James Madison had Sam Houston down and done, but it kept screwing up and couldn’t put the game away. South Dakota State has the ground game to keep that from happening, but …

Why Sam Houston Will Win

The Sam Houston (9-0) defensive line just keeps on coming.

The offense might be the star of the show – and it came through in the second half – but it’s the defensive front that lived behind the line all season long that took over in the second half of the thrilling 38-35 win over James Madison.

The downfield passing game isn’t going to work on a consistent basis against the South Dakota State secondary that doesn’t allow a whole lot down the field, but the Bearkats should be able to grind through this a bit.

The offense might not have worked all that well at times against the Dukes – the third down playmaking wasn’t there and there were too many mistakes early on – but again, the defense has the ability to hold up. James Madison ran well enough to get some key runs from its great backs, but it was all quickly negated by (again) …

The pass rush.

Sam Houston can’t let South Dakota State dictate the tempo or control the clock with the ground game, and all that Bearkat pressure has to force mistakes.

How did South Dakota State lose to North Dakota? -2 in turnover margin, the offensive line couldn’t control the game, the O couldn’t run well, and the team couldn’t come up with second half points.

Sam Houston can force a repeat of that on one side, and on the other, it’s not going to get a second straight mediocre passing day from Eric Schmid.

What’s Going To Happen

Can South Dakota State impose its will?

Sam Houston has the quarterback in Schmid who can take over, and to beat this into the ground, it has the defensive front that can wreck the game and dominate in key moments like it did against JMU.

But South Dakota State has those things, too – Mark Gronowski isn’t Schmid, but he has grown into the role.

The Jackrabbits will give up a few big, fun Sam Houston scoring drives, but the defense will hold up in the fourth and the offense isn’t going to make the big mistakes James Madison did in key spots.

The South Dakota State offensive line will do more than hold serve, and that will be enough.

Sam Houston vs James Madison FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why James Madison Will Win

James Madison (7-0) got up fast on North Dakota in a 34-21 win, and the defense held tough in the second half. The running game was great, QB Cole Johnson was razor sharp, and the team controlled the tempo throughout.

Sam Houston might have a high-powered offense, but it doesn’t control the clock, it turns the ball over a bit too much, and the defense now has to deal with an offense that knows how to convert on third downs.

North Dakota State wasn’t the normal North Dakota State, but it was still strong. Sam Houston still had to hold on for dear life late, and it caught a bit of a break with young Bison QB Cam Miller struggling in the big moment.

That’s not going to be a problem for Johnson.

Johnson and the James Madison offense should be able to keep things moving, the offensive line is a killer, and the run defense has been among the best in the FCS all year.

However …

Why Sam Houston Will Win

Sam Houston (8-0) can play a little run D, too.

The Bearkats might be known for their downfield passing game and the all-around playmaking ability of QB Eric Schmid, but the defense allows just 69 rushing yards per game, stuffed North Dakota State outside of two decent runs, and it’s got the pass rush and ability to pressure the JMU backfield all game long.

It’s not that James Madison can’t throw, but to go old school Janet Jackson, it’s all about control. It has to own the clock, the tempo, and the offense has to work on its terms – this isn’t really a team that wants to get into a wild shootout, even though it has the ability to do it.

Make this about the passing game and the up-and-down style, and then turn the great pass rush loose.

What’s Going To Happen

Which side can get the other to play the right style?

It’s not like Sam Houston can’t pound and grind, and James Madison can certainly for get the O going through the air. The difference is that the Dukes are going to be a wee bit better at doing what they want.

It’s not going to be a low-scoring fight, but the JMU quarterback play will be far better than what Sam Houston saw against North Dakota State, and the D will do its part to come up with just enough key stops to get by.

Cole Johnson might be under pressure all game long, but he’ll hit the third down throws and will come up with two big deep shots in big moments.

Delaware vs South Dakota State FCS Playoff Game Preview

Why Delaware Will Win

The defense keeps on rocking.

Delaware (7-0) went into Jacksonville State and held down the high-powered attack to just 14 points – with a late touchdown as a part of it – and just 200 yards of total offense.

But that’s what the Blue Hens do. They finished second in the FCS in scoring defense starting with an outstanding secondary that doesn’t give up a thing. Yeah, JSU had quarterback injury issues, but still, it only came up with 93 passing yards with a slew of those coming late.

But to beat South Dakota State, you have to hold up on the lines.

Delaware’s style of play keeps everyone fresh. It lives on turnover margin – the team was second in the nation but turned it over twice against JSU – and the team dominates the time of possession battle. It’s the chicken and the egg – the offense controls the tempo on third downs to keep the D fresh, the D comes up with third down stops and keeps the O line from getting gassed.

Delaware held the ball for over 38 minutes in the 20-14 win last week, but …

Why South Dakota State Will Win

The Blue Hen offensive line struggled to get anything going on the ground, and the rushing attack isn’t about to work against the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota State (7-1) struggled against Southern Illinois in a 31-26 win that should’ve been a lot easier, but the defensive front held the Saluki running game to 127 yards.

The Jackrabbits win by controlling games with the ground game thanks to a killer offensive line that’s played among the best in the FCS. Against this Delaware D, they might not get their 230+ rushing yards they normally crank out, but they’re going to grind, the defensive front is a rock against the run, and the team is fantastic at the turnover battle – just like Delaware.

No, it might not have been easy against Southern Illinois, but the team was +3 in turnover margin and the offense came up with the one big drive it had to have late.

What’s Going To Happen

Delaware is going to make this very, very tough.

The Blue Hen defense is the real deal, with the ability grind games down to a stop, but South Dakota State can do that, too. QB Nolan Henderson is just good enough keep everything moving, but he can’t do it alone.

South Dakota State QB Mark Gronowski should be able to play Henderson big moment for big moment.

It’s be a tough, low-scoring battle with South Dakota State doing a bit more on third downs, and Gronowski coming up with two big pass plays that Delaware won’t.

North Dakota vs James Madison FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why North Dakota Will Win

North Dakota (5-1) had one blip against North Dakota State, but other than that, it’s been the best team in the FCS – or very, very close to it – all season long.

When the lines are working, the Fighting Hawks are dominant.

The offensive line leads all of FCS in fewest tackles for loss allowed, is brilliant in pass protection, and in the 44-10 win over Missouri State, it was able to control the game from the start.

The pass rush and defense were able to take care of the rest.

This team can play with power, it doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter – for the most part – and the ground game should be able to take over for stretches to take control of the game.

However …

Why James Madison Will Win

The James Madison (6-0) defense is fantastic.

It got pushed a bit by the high-powered VMI offense in the 31-24 win, and the team had hang on late to get the win, but the Dukes might have the right formula to get by the Fighting Hawks.

They have the No. 1 defense in the FCS, the running game is a powerhouse – Jawon Hamilton ripped off a 99-yard touchdown run as part of the 309 yards on the ground the team cranked up against the Keydets – and the run defense doesn’t allow much of anything.

It’s not necessarily about ball control with JMU, but as long as the efficient passing game doesn’t have to take any chances – QB Cole Johnson was just okay against VMI, making a few big throws but also giving away two interceptions – the offense should be fine.

What’s Going To Happen

Whose lines do you like better?

North Dakota can do a little of everything right, but James Madison should be able to run well early on just enough to take the pressure off the passing attacks and the Duke defense should be better at getting off the field.

How did North Dakota lose to North Dakota State? The Fighting Hawks couldn’t control the clock, couldn’t stop the run, and couldn’t keep the chains moving. This won’t be 34-13 like that was, but James Madison should be able to use the same formula to move on.

Delaware vs Jacksonville State FCS Playoff Game Preview

Why Delaware Will Win

It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t easy, but Delaware (6-0) was able to push past Sacred Heart 19-10 with a great day from the defense, two takeaways, and just enough offensive production when the opportunities were there to get by.

This is a much, much stronger Blue Hen offensive team than it showed against the Pioneers.

The offense only generated 202 yards and the passing game didn’t do anything down the field, but as the team showed all season long, it was great in the turnover margin – +1 against Sacred Heart – the pass defense was a wall, and the No. 2 scoring D in all the FCS allowed just ten points.

Consider it a positive that Delaware wasn’t anywhere close to being as good as it normally is and still won. But …

Why Jacksonville State Will Win

The Jacksonville State (10-2) offense has the pop and firepower to push the Blue Hens. No one’s been able to do much with the passing game against the Delaware secondary, but the Gamecocks are terrific in pass protection, balance out the offense, and the ground game can pick up the slack if nothing is happening through the air.

The Jacksonville State O line controlled everything against Sacred Heart, the offense was balanced, and there wasn’t any issue in the 49-14 blowout despite having the ball for fewer than 20 minutes. The time of possession battle usually doesn’t matter to the Gamecocks, but they should be able to control the clock a bit better against Delaware.

The JSU D didn’t come up with any takeaways – that’s not normal. It’s great overall defensively, the offense catches a few breaks thanks to a slew of takeaways, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Be slightly stunned if this isn’t a defensive fight.

Jacksonville State might have a fantastic offense, but the Delaware D is the real deal and won’t let this get out of hand. The Gamecocks will have a bit more offensively – the running game should be okay – and the defense will keep the Blue Hen ground attack in check.
