UFC Tampa video: Dustin Jacoby obliterates Vitor Petrino with one punch moments after ‘boring’ chants

Dustin Jacoby said he “heard the boos” just before he knocked out Vitor Petrino in highlight reel fashion at UFC on ESPN 63.

Just as the commentary team was pleading for [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] and [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] to close their fight strong at UFC on ESPN 63, a spectacular highlight arrived.

The crowd at Amalie Arena was chanting “boring” as the final 90 seconds in the third round of the light heavyweight bout ticked down. That’s when Jacoby (20-9-1 MMA, 8-6-1 UFC) lined up an absolutely massive straight right hand that instantly knocked Petrino (11-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) out cold and sent him folding to the canvas at the 3:44 mark of Round 3.

[lawrence-related id=2793362]

It was a finish that woke up everyone in the arena, and you can check out a replay of Jacoby’s handiwork below (via X):

Jacoby came into the fight off a difficult stretch, with one win in his previous five fights. He made sure he got back on the right track and was thrilled to do so in the aftermath of the knockout.

“I heard you guys booing, but the game plan was to stay patient,” Jacoby said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “But when I got him, I knew I was going to get him, and here we are, baby. … I heard the boos, trust me. I wanted to go. But I had to stay patient.”

Jacoby then pitched for a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus to UFC CEO Dana White, whom the broadcast indicated had agreed from his cageside position.

Dustin Jacoby vs. Vitor Petrino prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 63

Is Dustin Jacoby a passable test for Vitor Petrino, who enters UFC Tampa on the heels of his first career loss?

[autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] and [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] meet Saturday on the UFC on ESPN 63 main card at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 107-93-3

Dustin Jacoby vs. Vitor Petrino UFC on ESPN 63 preview

Jacoby (19-9-1 MMA, 7-6-1 UFC) enters this main card matchup in need of a win. Jacoby has gone 1-4 over his last 5 fights. Although his lone win during that stretch was a first-round finish of Kennedy Nzechukwu last August, he was finished in nearly the same amount of time in his last outing by Dominick Reyes in June. … Petrino (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) also enters on the heels of a loss in the first round. Anthony Smith stopped him with a guillotine at UFC 301, handing the Brazilian his first professional loss.

Dustin Jacoby vs. Vitor Petrino UFC on ESPN 63 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is another light heavyweight offering in the form of Jacoby vs. Petrino.

There’s no denying that Jacoby has been on a rough skid, but I believe that a bevy of those losses come from a specific stylistic look a southpaw counterstrikers.

Not only does Petrino not fit that bill of fight, but I’m not even sure if Petrino knows what bill of fighter he fits at this point of his career.

Aside from making incredibly raw mistakes that cost him a submission lost to Anthony Smith last time out, Petrino’s game, in general, still feels a bit disjointed for as athletic and capable as he looks.

So long as Jacoby can use the larger octagon to his advantage and stay standing, then I suspect that the American the survive the early storms and pull away down the stretch.

The pick is Jacoby by unanimous decision.

Dustin Jacoby vs. Vitor Petrino UFC on ESPN 63 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the Brazilian fighter, listing Petrino -310 and Jacoby +240 via FanDuel.

‘Sh*t happens’: How UFC Tampa’s Vitor Petrino dealt with first career loss in Brazil

Last time out, Brazil’s Vitor Petrino suffered his first career loss on home soil. Entering UFC Tampa, he remains as confident as ever.

TAMPA, Fla. – [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] is no longer an undefeated fighter, but that fact hasn’t shaken his confidence ahead of UFC on ESPN 63.

The fight at Amalie Arena will be the third of the year for Petrino (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and it’s against Dustin Jacoby, a member of the same Factory X team that handed him his first career loss.

In May at UFC 301, former title challenger Anthony Smith took out Petrino in just two minutes with a guillotine choke. Not only was it the first defeat of his career, but it came on home soil in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Losing in Brazil carries some weight, but again, it’s part of the game,” Petrino told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “It was just a bad day at work. As I said, sh*t happens, and sometimes you just have to turn things around and move on forward. Just get prepared for the next fight and move on up.”

Petrino appears to carry the same demeanor he had when he was undefeated. It’s almost as if the loss never happened, but his professional record now has another number other than zero in his loss column. The result of the fight against Smith gave something for his detractors to talk about, but Petrino is focused on the good things in his life and career ahead of the fight against Jacoby (19-9-1 MMA, 7-6-1 UFC).

“Haters are always going to hate, but they’re always just waiting for you to make one mistake and just pound on it,” Petrino said. “I try not to pay attention to that because I think there’s so much more positive coming from fans. I’ve said this: I fight for fans. There’s so many good, positive things that heavily outweigh the negatives. There’s so many good things coming my way, that you end up even forgetting there were bad things.”

UFC strikers Dustin Jacoby, Vitor Petrino to fight in Tampa

Dustin Jacoby and Vitor Perino have combined for 21 career finishes, including 19 knockouts, so UFC fans can expect violence around the holidays.

A banger of a light heavyweight fight is headed to Tampa, Fla.

[autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] and [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] will square off in a light heavyweight bout Dec. 14 at the UFC Fight Night event at Amalie Arena.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

The two fighters have combined for 21 career finishes, including 19 knockouts, so fight fans should expect this one to get violent.

Both Jacoby (19-9-1 MMA, 7-6-1 UFC) and Petrino (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) aim to rebound from recent losses. A live by the sword, die by the sword fighter, Jacoby was finished by Dominick Reyes in June. One month earlier, Petrino took a step up the rankings to battle Anthony Smith and was submitted in the first round.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup for Dec. 14 includes:

  • Mackenzie Dern vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Dustin Jacoby vs. Vitor Petrino

UFC 301 results: Anthony Smith taps Vitor Petrino in two minutes

Former UFC title challenger Anthony Smith isn’t done yet, as he submitted Vitor Petrino in Round 1 at UFC 301.

Former UFC title challenger [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] isn’t done yet.

In the UFC 301 featured bout Saturday, Smith (38-19 MMA, 13-9 UFC) submitted [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) with a guillotine choke two minutes into Round 1. The event took place at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

After a feeling out process on the feet at distance, the two light heavyweights engaged in the clinch. Smith grabbed a hold of Petrino’s neck with a guillotine attempt. Petrino elevated Smith and they crashed to the canvas. Smith’s grip seemed to deepen. Petrino strained before the panic tap came.

Smith, 35, rebounds from a knockout loss to Khalil Rountree and moves to 2-1 in his most recent three bouts. Petrino, 26, loses for the first time as a professional.

Vitor Petrino vs. Anthony Smith prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC 301

Anthony Smith faces immense pressure as a major underdog in vs. unbeaten Vitor Petrino at UFC 301, and the breakdown is grim for “Lionheart.”

[autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] and [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] meet Saturday on the UFC 301 main card at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-3
UFC main cards, 2024: 31-32-2

Vitor Petrino vs. Anthony Smith UFC 301 preview

Vitor Petrino def. Tyson Pedro, UFC Fight Night 238

Petrino has two bonuses in his first four UFC fights … 26-year-old Brazilian has eight of his 11 wins by stoppage, including seven knockouts … came to UFC through DWCS in 2022 with a win over Rodolfo Bellato, who now is in the UFC, himself … Smith lost a light heavyweight title shot to Jon Jones in 2019 … he’s been streaky since then at 5-5 … Smith is trying to bounce back from a current 1-3 stretch, including a knockout loss to Khalil Rountree this past December.

Vitor Petrino vs. Anthony Smith expert pick, prediction

Anthony Smith

Filling out the main card is a light heavyweight showdown between [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag].

After accruing four straight wins in the octagon after a successful stint on the Contender Series, Petrino will have his wish granted regarding his callout of Smith. Although this feels like an apropos time to say be careful what you wish for, Petrino appears to have some decent promise given his athletic ceiling and the division he competes in.

Petrino’s last outing left a lot to be desired, but I have a hard time picking Smith given his inconsistency as of late.

https://twitter.com/DanTomMMA/status/1244458244044513280

Smith is a well-rounded fighter who is much livelier than what the betting odds are indicating, I just suspect that Petrino’s power and leg kicks will dissuade the former title challenger from the game he needs to play.

As a fan of Smith, I hope that I’m wrong here. But as an analyst, the pick is Petrino to produce a stoppage by Round 3.

Petrino is a huge 6-1 favorite, according to FanDuel. Petrino has been favored in all of his UFC fights, but never by this much. The only other times Smith was this big of an underdog was against Magomed Ankalaev and in his light heavyweight title shot against Jon Jones in 2019.

Vitor Petrino vs. Anthony Smith start time, how to watch

Records: Smith (37-19-0) | Petrino (11-0-0)

Smith, a.k.a. “Lionheart”, is looking to bounce back after a 3rd-round KO/TKO loss to Khalil Rountree Jr. last time out in early December. He has dropped 3 of his past 4 fights since July 30, 2022, with only a split-decision win over Ryan Spann in the stretch. He has ended up going the distance in 2 of the past 3 bouts, lasting into Round 3 on each of the 3 outings.

Petrino will be fighting in front of his countrymen in Rio. He has won all 4 of his fights since making his debut at the UFC debut, including a unanimous-decision win over Tyson Pedro last time out on March 2. Petrino has ended up going the distance in 2 of his 4 UFC bouts while going into the 3rd round on 3 occasions.

The 35-year-old Smith has the experience, but the 26-year-old Petrino has the youth, and he is fighting in his native Brazil in front of a raucous crowd. Petrino holds a 1.5-inch reach advantage, while Smith has a 3.21-to-2.74 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Petrino is more accurate on those strikes, however, landing 54.23%, to 51.89% for Smith.

Petrino is much better on the ground, too, posting a 3.86 takedown average, 68.18% takedown accuracy percentage and 0.77 submission average.

  • Will the fight go the distance? (Yes +185 | No -225)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

UFC 301: Smith vs. Petrino picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Petrino (-550) will cost you 5½ times your potential return, which is way too much risk for not enough return. Instead, let’s get a little more specific on the fight finish.

The Brazilian fighter has been a knockout artist, winning 7 of his 11 professional bouts via KO/TKO. While that’s all well and good, Smith (+400) might be the most experienced fighter he has met.

Petrino has gone the distance in 2 of the past 4 fights, while Smith has had just 1 finish in the past 3 outings. Back PETRINO BY DECISION (+225) for the chance to double up.

Over/Under (O/U)

Over 1.5 Rounds (-200) is a little too expensive, costing you more than 2 times your potential return. As a standalone wager, it’s not recommended, but including it in a multi-part parlay is certainly an acceptable play.

YES (+165): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is the better play at plus-money. Smith has ended up going the distance in 2 of the past 3 outings, while Petrino has ended up going the distance twice in the past 4 outings, and he fought into Round 3 against Marcin Prachnio in July 2023 at UFC 290, nearly going the distance then, too.

UFC 301’s Anthony Smith ‘offended’ Vitor Petrino called him out: ‘I refuse to be the new Neil Magny’

Anthony Smith is tired of rising contenders trying to use him as a stepping stone.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] is tired of rising contenders trying to use him as a stepping stone.

[autotag]Vitor Petrino[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) called out Smith (37-19 MMA, 12-9 UFC) after beating Tyson Pedro less than two weeks ago at UFC Fight Night 238. He got his wish, and will face the former title challenger at UFC 301 on May 4 in Rio.

Smith is bothered by undefeated Petrino’s callout. After spending years facing former champions and the division’s upper echelon, “Lionheart” has recently been fighting down the rankings. He vows to make fighters think twice before calling him out.

“I’m offended,” Smith said on MMA on SiriusXM’s MMA Today. “Why didn’t he call out someone higher ranked? Why didn’t he call out (Aleksandar) Rakic? As far as timelines go, Rakic is going to be fighting soon. That would be a little closer to your timeline, in terms of two guys that are fighting around the same time. Why didn’t you call out Rakic or Volkan Oezdemir? Why didn’t you call out any of those guys? Because you think you can beat me. You’re not sure about the other ones and that pisses me off.

“I’m not done. I’m not the old wounded lion that’s just pacing around waiting to be killed by the younger ones. That’s not me. I refuse to be the new Neil Magny. That’s three guys in a month and a half that have fought, won, and called me out. All unranked, all young guys. We’re going to dead this right in its tracks. Call me a gatekeeper. Call me whatever the hell you want to call me, but here’s the fact: I’ve been fighting inside the top 10 for a very long time and have been fighting in the rankings in two different weight classes for a very long time.”

Smith is no stranger to shutting down rising contenders. He spoiled Devin Clark’s first main event by submitting him, finished Jimmy Crute, and defeated Ryan Spann twice – and he plans on continuing to stake his claim as a top light heavyweight.

“If your favorite fighter isn’t already in the top 10, he won’t be until I’m gone,” Smith said. “F*cking like it or not, that’s just the life that we live in right now. I’ve got a career plan with where I’m headed and it starts with shutting these young guys up, and then we’ll go to the next one. …My plan, when this is all done, is to not have another young guy open his f*cking mouth with my name in it again.”
